Informative and inspirational!

I have been following the author, Phil Dean, on Instagram (@shoreditchsketcher) for awhile now and have always been impressed with his artwork. When he decided to publish a book, I was all in. It is well organized, clearly written and has excellent illustrations to accompany the topic at hand. My only problem is that I bought the digital copy which, as we all know, is not as conducive to flipping back and forth to look at previous “pages.” I’ll admit, I was impatient to have the book immediately so it’s my own fault. Nevertheless, it was still a very worthwhile purchase. Maybe the hard copy will go on my Wishlist.

This is a good introductory text for urban sketching. It teaches the basics such as perspective, measuring, and composition. There are also a few exercises included to get you started. There are some examples of the author's work and the work of other sketchers. These are nice, but for an introductory textbook, it probably would have been better to show work closer to what an amateur could do. That way, beginners wouldn't be discouraged when comparing their work with the work of professionals in the field.

This is a short, excellent book. It focuses on the basics and guides the sketcher, new or experienced, through a method that will make anyone a good Urban Sketcher and take away all the fear of not being "good enough!"
