Bluewater Voodoo is the third book in the trilogy that begins the Bluewater Thriller series.
Welcome aboard! Charles Dougherty is a lifelong sailor; he's lived what he writes. He and his wife have spent over 30 years sailing together. For 15 years, they lived aboard their boat full-time, cruising the East Coast and the islands. They spent most of that time exploring the Eastern Caribbean. Dougherty is well acquainted with the islands and their people. The characters and locations in his novels reflect his experience. A storyteller before all else, Dougherty lets his characters speak for themselves. Pick up one of his thrillers and listen to the sound of adventure as you smell the salt air. Enjoy the views of distant horizons and meet some people you won't forget. Dougherty has written over 25 books. His Bluewater Thrillers are set in the yachting world of the Caribbean and chronicle the adventures of two young women running a luxury charter yacht in a rough-and-tumble environment. The Connie Barrera Thrillers are also set in the Caribbean and feature some of the same characters from a slightly more romantic perspective. Besides the Bluewater Thrillers and the Connie Barrera Thrillers, he wrote The Redemption of Becky Jones, a psycho-thriller, and The Lost Tourist Franchise, a short story about one of the characters from Deception in Savannah. I have never been on a sailboat but after reading my third Bluewater thriller I feel like I have. Great descriptions have drawn images to help me picture the action .
I admit that I enjoy reading Dougherty’s books, and I was not disappointed by the third book in the Bluewater mystery series. He brings back interesting characters like Dani and Liz, who operate a charter business on their fancy sailboat. Dani is still a little spit-fire, ready to punch out their current customer when he leers at her, much to our reading pleasure.
The girls were hired by a professor and his slinky assistant to sail them through the islands. Sounds like an easy job until two Venezuelan soldiers board the sailboat intent on kidnapping the professor. Dani and Liz learn that the professor is working for a reality TV show producer, trying to find real zombies. He discovered the location of a Voodoo Bokor who created a real-life zombie. They run afoul of a Venezuelan hit man. Martinez is under direct orders from Chavez to create zombies and launch a plan to disrupt the next American election.
In this story readers learn about the Voodoo religion and how Haitians are mistreated by island governments. The formula to make a real zombie is a closely-guarded secret and the mild-mannered Voodoo Bokor is reluctant to exploit the zombie in his care. Dani learns that one of her relatives is a high priestess of the religion, and enlists her help for the professor.
In between kidnappings, bombings, and high speed chases, the criminals prove that a plan is only as good as the lowest man involved in the scheme. Angry that the thugs tried to sink her ship, Dani calls upon her own experts to straighten out the mess. They have no problems with competence!
Dougherty once again leads his readers on a roller coaster ride through the Caribbean. During the adventure questions from the first two books are answered. If you haven’t read the whole series, there’s enough back story in this book to make it enjoyable on its own, but you might just get hooked on the series!
Once again, I am pleased to report another great actioner from CLR Dougherty. Like the others in the Blue Water Thriller series, there is action, suspense, intrigue and adventure galore. This time, though, there is even a bit of education when it comes to the subject of Voodoo and Zombies. I am gratified to learn the things that are explained in this book.
The main chararcters of Dani and Liz really come into their own in this book. Kick-ass and take no prisoners, they are more and more becoming the force to reckon with in the Caribbean.
Three down, two to go in the series. I'm starting the next one immediately!
The voodoo angle was interesting and, assuming he's done his research, and I'm sure he has, educational. Good storyline again. Maybe a little preachy/stereo typically the politics.
Fast paced and exciting, Dani and Liz are at it again! I ignored this series for a long time because the cover artwork just didn't appeal to me, but I'm glad I finally gave them a chance.
The first 2 books were good, although a bit choppy, this one just never latched on. H I gave up on it after a dozen chapters. That also means I will never read the rest.
