It’s got a simpler, older style to the artwork, but I’m enjoying the story a lot! Go Gon!

The tension starts to rise as the challenges for the hunter license get much tougher. I’m having a lot of fun with this series so far! It really scratches that early Dragon Ball (non-DBZ) itch for me. Gon is a delightful protagonist, much like young Goku was, and the challenges he and his friends are going through are silly, but not without interesting unexpected twists. Looking forward to volume 3!

I've watched the 2011 version of this anime and not the original. I don't know how it was done the first time, but the recent version of the anime was slightly different from the manga, especially the second phase of the exam handled by the gourmet hunters. I loved the sushi part of the exam because it was funny, which was unfortunately not included in the 2011 version, but I loved the boiled egg exam in the anime more because of how it was done. In this volume, we get to see the beginning of how Tonpa the rookie crusher worked to sabotage the rookie applicants (thus our four main characters) and it was still entertaining to see how they tried to get past that tiny hurdle in the form of Tonpa. The sly old man Netero was also introduced in this volume and I always enjoyed his little ball game with Gon and Killua. In the anime version, this was the episode where I started to think how cool Killua is (though it was inappropriate to call the part where he killed two men with his bare hand and extended nails cool). He was still a brat here and obviously didn't really care about other people but we can see that there's something deeper about him than being just a kid. Seeing this old Killua, I'm excited to see how his character developed in this manga.

Another great read! They continue into the next round and have to complete the food task of Menchi and Buhara one of whom wants a pig and the other a sushi and no wonder they fail at it, until Chairman Netero comes in and saves the day. Their task is to get some spider eagle egg and make a boiled egg which most of them do so from 140 only 42 pass and it was so good. The challenge while funny shows the talent of the chef hunters, meanwhile while everyone is idly passing their time, Gon and Killua are asked by Netero in some ball game and we just see how powerful he is but the boys won't give up so easily and that part with Gon forcing Netero to use his right hand was good. You could see he was impressed and then we have the third round, where the crew has to cross the tower in 72 hours and their first challenge, defeat the prisoners there before time is up! It was a lengthy read for sure but a good one and the art is a bit shoddy in some place but its getting better! Loving the character of Gon!

Reread: March 8, 2021

It was a fun one as they reach the Visca forest preserve and there they find Buhara and Menchi, their next examiners and to impress them what they have to do is make roasted pigs and sushi, but fail but then Chairman Netero comes in and they have to make boiled eggs, many fail but the quadrant passes and in the airplane they play a game of taking the ball from the chairman and its tough but Gon keeps going impressing the latter meanwhile we come to know more about Kurapika's family..Assassins and next we have them coming to the Trick tower where in 72 hours they have to escape sorta, its a fun volume which lots of twists but really fun and the exam is getting even more lethal and dangerous and good moments for Tonpa, deceptions and all and great Gon moments! The art was fab as usual!

I've tried watching the anime but I didn't enjoy it for some reason . The manga is more interesting than the anime but I'm still not enjoying it as much as I enjoy other anime & manga .
I will give the anime another chance because everyone seem to be in love with it ( my friend is nagging me about it as well )

A little more comedic than volume one, it still has moments of gore and action sandwiched between attempted quirky humour. Most of the jokes land, however, they can feel forced and awkward at times. It’s a quick read that does enough to entertain, but not my cup of tea some of the time.

Chapter 9
This is kind of different from the anime. Hisoka just start attacking without any provocation which is weird to me. The remaining alive persons, Leorio’s choice of weapon, and Hisoka’s actions are different. Well I can only compare in my reviews because I have seen the anime more than I’ve read the manga (which is my first time).

Chapter 10
This is the time they arrived at Biska Woods. The setting is seems different than the anime, Gon’s reason that leads him to Phase 2 is different, too. Gon is still the one who found the weakness of the pig however he just found it out this time. Others are pretty much the same with the anime.

Chapter 11
This time it is really different. The pork cooking, only Buhara judged it unlike the anime. Now Menchi ask for a Sushi which is entirely different than the anime. (This is getting interesting! I have never seen this part and I can’t wait to find out what happened.) And it turns out to be so impressive. This time they have a building with loads of kitchen for the remaining examinees. Kurapika remembered the ingredients for a sushi which is the fish and everyone rushed to go fishing. Lol. It’s funny though.

And I just love how Kurapika is a huge bookish person which I can relate to. I would love to be that knowledgeable.

LOLLL so funny Leorio’s sushi looks so ridiculous!!!
LOOLLL Gon’s fish looks a little bit better but still funny!!!

Menchi is totally overdoing it. Buhara’s reactions are funny.

Chapter 12
The incident is the same with the anime which is Menchi failed all the examinees. This time there are just lots of differences but still the same approach. They went to the split mountain for Menchi’s test which she is participating. The challenge is different and rather difficult this time! I am amazed because the anime seems unique but this one is just difficult. LOL.

Chapter 13
I am not sure what to say about this chapter. They are on the plane this time. There are many discussions between Buhara, Menchi and Satotsu. I think they are the same with the anime but there are things that are omitted. The game is still on between Killua, Gon and Netero.

Chapter 14
Pretty much the same. I just like Gon’s personality. He is simple and yet clever.

Chapter 15
This is where they are left above the shrewdness tower. It is pretty much the same with the anime. At first it seems impossible to go down the tower however it is just a clever work of art. :D

Chapter 16
Five individuals are finally completed and doors are open. However it leads to a platform where they will fight prisoners. I still find it funny when Tompa just volunteered to fight first and just surrender. He is a leading example of a total jerk! LOL. The reactions of Killua, Gon, Kurapika and Leorio are just ridiculous! I still find it funny.

Chapter 17
I just love how witty Gon is even in times of trouble. If that would be me I would panic. LOL. This chapter is pretty much like the anime which is great. I already know what happens but it is still great to find new things from the manga.

Gon is still on the path to taking the exam.

It was extremely violent and people were cheating to get ahead.

Is it a reflection of how the system of education works in Japan at the time? It was not a friendly competition but really cutthroat. Competitors set traps for other competitors to make them get ahead.

Gon is a good fighter and a fast thinker. This is nice going for him.

It is really not my cup of tea. I read this because it was available in the local library section.

A fun action-filled but also plenty of humour manga that I am excited to finally be reading!

I am so excited that my library is adding this series to their catalogue, because I have always wanted to read this series. I did read bits and bobs of it in the Shounen Jump English magazine, but never the full series. So I am 100% ready to finally read this one.

In these first two volumes we meet the main character, Gon, who is your typical shounen hero. Overpowered, not always too smart, a bit childish. But he did show plenty of promise and so I was eager to get to know him more. I love that, despite at times being a bit dumb, he has some amazing skills. Like being able to detect storms, not being afraid, kind to friends (and foes), helping out where he can. Even during some harrowing moments he is there to help his new friends/allies, like coming back to assist them even if that means a test going wrong. I am so excited to see how much he will grow as the story continues, he will definitely be one of the greatest hunters, I am sure of it.

Next to him we also meet plenty of other characters, the three biggest are Leorio who is an idiot a bit smug slightly annoying but also interesting to follow, then there is Kurapika who is strong and wants to become a hunter to take vengeance for his clan and get something back from the evil group, I really liked him and I am definitely curious to learn more about his clan and his family and what kind of talents/powers they have, and then we also meet Killua a boy with a skateboard and I am very curious about him as we don’t learn a lot about him except that he is possibly superstrong.

There are also the examinators who vary from WTF to OK what is up with this guy??? I really like the variety of examinators and love that none of them are normal, haha, I guess it takes a special breed to become a hunter and later examinator. So far my favourite is the old guy, aka one of the big bosses.

Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 02 by Yoshihiro TogashiAnd then there are the other competitors, most of them we don’t really get to meet closely, that is what happens when there are tests after all. But two keep on popping up. Tonka, who is just a dick, I am sorry, but he is. And Hisoka who just a freaking psycho and I am NOT a fan of him so far. Dang that guy is a creep extra-ordinaire. LORD. But then again every shounen needs an antagonist. I guess Hisoka is going to be the big one.

These first two volumes are all about the exams/tests to become a hunter! And I have to say, I will not want to become a hunter, haha. I mean, it wouldn’t be too bad if you just fell out and then come back another year, but a lot of the peeps just die. In gruesome ways. But I did like reading about these tests and see what is next with each phase. The least favourite was the gourmet one, that just bored me, but I did like the one before that, and I am also looking forward to the one we are having now, with the tower, the prisoners, and more.

The art is pretty nice, I feel that it could be better, but the style does fit with the story and how action-packed it is.

All in all, I hope that by the time this review pops up in October (my blog is a bit full), I have been able to read some more volumes. I would recommend these two volumes to everyone. It was so good and I flew through them!

This starts off the crazy exam. An exam like no other I have ever seen. Dang! So much time on cooking! I found it funny that they had to make sushi, and being this is from Japan, no one knew what it was. The chairman I found to be a curious character and Killua shows a hidden side... Woah!

As great as this is, it's kinda wild how Leorio has been completely thrown away as a character by Togashi. Like, he hasn't been important in sooo long. He's barely in the current arc (Which may last the rest of my damn life), and it doesn't appear he will be used often in the future, once they finally reach the Dark Continent. I could be wrong about that. Togashi could have big plans for him once we reach the Dark Continent, but I'm not so sure.

I thought this volume was a really fun sequel to the first one, going straight back into the Hunter Exams where the previous volume left off!

I'm intrigued to see where the storyline is going to go as far as Hisoka (creepy jester guy) is concerned, as it seems that he didn't enter the Hunter Exam to become a hunter himself, but instead to find worthy opponents to battle at a later(?) date.

The ball test thing was pretty great too - as it reminded me a lot of the bell test from Naruto. Wonder if one of them inspired the other?

I'm also really intrigued to see where the next volume will go, as this one ended with the main characters (and a "Kabuto"-style guy) in a series of one-on-one battles to get to the next stage.

Ahhhh, re-reading brings back so many memories. The humble beginnings of the gang is really always fun to read. Gon is Gon, while you truly see the difference in the others from now to later in the series. God, I love this series. The hunter exam has always been a favorite arc of mine as well.

In this volume, the examinees are going forward with the second and third phases of the exam. The phases of the exam are getting progressively harder and there are a lot of examinees who can’t handle the pressure. Examinees are being disqualified at big rates, others are growing frustrated, or are being taunted by “veteran” examinees.

Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio have officially banded together. Gon, Killua, and Kirupika are relatively calm compared to Leorio who is easily shaken up when taunted by others. We also learn a little bit about Killua’s family.

The series is definitely getting more interesting. I am going to keep reading, and when I finish it I’m going to watch the anime :-).
