“The Liver Birds were dead and the city had died with them…” Can it really be that evil has won and the world has fallen? Raj Chowdhury must lead a group of survivors on one last quest to confront their adversary, the hideously changed Saunders, who is now at the peak of his powers. They must brave the dreaded Screamers and treachery in their own ranks. As the journey which began with Missing Beat reaches its nail-biting climax, who will survive? And where, exactly, are Joey Cale and Emma Winrush? Perfect Beat is the final book in the heart-stopping trilogy that includes Missing Beat and Beat Surrender.
The trilogy that began with Missing Beat and progressed through Beat Surrender, now moves to its apocalyptic climax with Beat Surrender. In my opinion, Beat Surrender is the the perfect way to draw this adventure trilogy to a close. It was my faithful companion through a night of extreme insomnia so that I no longer cared about sleeping. I just wanted to know what happened next - how the many strands of the story of Joey Cale and his disparate group of comrades would finally unravel. I love the way the story slips between parallel worlds where the characters live different lives. This is a YA tale, but one any adult fan of adventure stories can enjoy. there is humour here, sadness, resolve, danger and I, for one, felt the ending provided a perfect balance without once slipping into the predictably banal. A rattling good tale.
Bob’s vision of parallel worlds are not only imaginative, but also disturbingly believable. As in his other two books, the tangled struggle between good and evil is relentless and riveting. Bob Stone once again proves to be an excellent storyteller and this final instalment of his trilogy will satisfy fans of his earlier books. So, if you want to be entertained and transported to an eerily plausible view of our universe then read this book. Its climatic conclusion will leave you breathless and wanting more from this excellent writer.
Believe me, Bob Stone not only succeeds in upping the dangers for Joey and Emma but also gives us the perfect resolution. This really is a Perfect Beat. Thrilling writing and great covers for the entire trilogy too. The final Beat book is surprising, shocking, life-confirming and a must on the bookshelf.
This book - and the preceding two in the trilogy - really places the reader central to the action. Joey, Emma, Raj, Ruby and Evan, and not forgetting Misha, are as real to me as anybody. I got so caught up in the journey and the twists and turns had me doing that thing you do when you have a sandwich halfway to your mouth but you can’t take your eyes from the page. I started to feel the loss when I knew it was coming to an end. That putting off of reading more but not being able to. Right up to the end I had. I idea what was going to happen. Loved it.
