*New update with EDITS!!* My oldest friend is dead, my parents are liars, and my whole world is about to change. It’s crazy what just a few hours could do to your life, I’m talking about knock down drag out kind of change that makes you question everything. Demons are real, my parents aren’t really my parents, and men that I don’t actually know start to feel like the belong to me, I don’t understand anything that’s going on. What else could go wrong this year? Well, maybe I shouldn't jinx it.
**Hell Raisers is a Paranormal Reverse Harem, medium/fast burn, with a cliff hanger! Book 1 of 3**
The premise is enticing. You get the human who doesn’t realize she’s more than. Interesting take on demons with inherent vamps, incubi, djinn, and shifters. I didn’t like Thea. She was immature (I get she’s 18 but come on) and just made a lot of stupid decisions. Hey just ignore the letter from your real parents because…. Realize you’re not quite like the others and don’t hide your powers and tell your new BFF you just met. Not a huge fan of the 500 year plus demons with the naive 18 yo. On,y thing enticing me to read book 2 is that I’m curious as to how Thea and Ambrose will progress.
This was another book that was really hard for me to rate. On one hand there were tropes and themes that I adored. On the other there were certain aspects that I just didn't like but most of them are personal preference, nit-picky things that many people would probably not have an issue with. I will say that I believe this is a new author and if so, she did a great job overall.
What I Liked: *I am a sucker for the 'person thinks they are human but finds out they are really a supernatural species' trope. *The over powered, special snowflake heroine. Thea is actually one of the things I didn't like in this book but I did enjoy when she was able to do things that most couldn't. I know many hate super powered characters but I love them. *The teachers weren't complicit in the bullying and didn't ignore it. So many of these books have this and I loathe it so I was pleasantly surprised this wasn't the case in this story. *The academy setting. I am a fan! *The magic. I love it when there is varied magics and I can discover fun new ways to use it through the main character. *The mystery behind Thea's origins and abilities. This is what kept me reading when other elements frustrated me enough to almost DNF. There was one exception that felt like a nonsensical, contrived way to stretch out the plot but to share more would be a spoiler. *The Zilli/Asim dynamic.
What I Didn't Like: *The main character, Thea. So, we all interpret information differently but my take on Thea was that she was mostly immature, disloyal and selfish. The good news is that there is room for a great character arc. *Illogical thinking. There were so many instances where the characters' thinking (or actions and responses) had me going "WTF" but examples would give spoilers. I have no insight to the intentions but many of these instances felt like vehicles to move or stop plot progression and made the characters feel less authentic.
Regardless of my dislikes, this book had some very entertaining moments. I will be reading book 2.
This was the first book I've read by Jane Pragor, and I believe it was her first release. The plot was definitely intriguing as I found myself finishing the entire series. The book was fast-paced and explored different takes on demons - vampires, jinn, incubi, sucubi and shifters.
The book starts with Thea, our FMC, celebrating her 18th birthday as a human. That night changed her life forever... she came into her powers and began her new life as a "super demon." She quickly learned she was the product of a prophecy to save the world - Lucifer vs Lillith.
There were some errors that fell through related to proofreading, but it definitely didn't keep me from finishing!
If you can withstand dropped and/or wrong words, as well as improper grammer in some places you will enjoy this book. The FMC is strong, the pace is quick, and storyline interesting. I would have given it a 4 if someone had proofread and identified and corrected mistakes before publication.
Wonderful story - it really pulled me in and I loved the characters. I can’t wait to read the next book. The one criticism I might have is that it could use a bit more proofreading/editing
I'm on the fence with my rating. I liked the story but the writing style was a little iffy for me. It was more like she was telling me rather then showing me story and it flowing freely in my head.
