Mysteries, taxidermy, and lonely hearts – what is a woman to do?
All is not well on the cosy but quirky English island of Greengage.
The mysterious rummaging and stealing from an old lady’s bookshelf exposes secrets and suspicious behaviour. Then there’s a cryptic lovers’ quarrel between two pub owners and an eccentric uncle interfering in affairs of the heart.
No wonder Kit Sorel—librarian and now reluctant private detective—is busy.
To make things worse, she’s worried about her relationship with the hardworking businesswoman and lady of the manor, Laura Howard.
Add a stuffed badger, dog walking bets, a Barbie balloon and a conundrum regarding the name Susan and you’ll be left wondering if Kit can handle these tricky situations? Or will the eccentric, comical Greengagers get in her way as usual?
More importantly, will this all be sorted out before this year’s kitten race?
Emma Sterner-Radley spent far too much time hopping from subject to subject at university, back in her native country of Sweden. One day, she finally emerged with a degree in Library and Information Science. She thought libraries was her thing, because she wanted to work with books, and being an author was just an impossible dream, right? Wrong. She's now a writer and a publisher. (But still a librarian at heart, too.)
She lives with her wife and two cats in England. There is no point in saying which city, as they move about once a year. She spends her free time writing, reading, daydreaming, working out, and watching whichever television show has the most lesbian subtext at the time.
Her tastes in most things usually lean towards the quirky and she loves genres like urban fantasy, magic realism, and steampunk.
Emma is also a hopeless sap for any small chubby creature with tiny legs, and can often be found making heart-eyes at things like guinea pigs, wombats, marmots, and human toddlers.
A sequel to Greengage Plots. Laura and Kit are as adorable and in love as ever. But their life is not without stress. Laura feels her duty to Greengage Island and all the pressures and notoriety of her family history and status, plus her connections to the Island and business, has her stretched thin, and not putting herself or her relationship first.
Kit does feel a little lonesome at times, but tries not to let it worry her - afterall how can she begrudge Laura's generosity and kindness, when those are the very things she adores about her? She just wishes she would put herself first, and tell meddling family members where to go, so she can be happy and fulfilled and not pulled in 100 different directions.
I thought this relationship drama was realistic and touching. It's difficult being with someone who has such a giving selfless heart, and struggling with those feelings that they are being used up by selfish people around them, and being pulled from pillar to post because they can't say no. Wanting to protect them, yet still allow them to be who they are - without being selfish or stifling yourself - is a hard balance I could relate to.
I didn't particular like the mystery aspect of this book, all surrounding a missing book and a will. It became a little too convoluted and I didn't particular care by the time the revelations came out. Although I was impressed with Kit's determination to help her neighbours and new friends, and especially the young teen who desperately needed some good role models.
I would have liked a bit more from friends and couple Shannon and Rachel. Also from Aimee, the spitfire bestie!
I truly hope this isn't the last we hear from Laura and Kit (and all of the friends on and off Greengage) maybe there will be a next book and a wedding? hint hint, nudge nudge Emma Sterner Radley! hehee!
I’ve been waiting for Greengage Shelf by Emma Sterner-Radley to be published for almost a year now. I fell in love with all of the sweet and quirky characters as well as the Island of Greengage with the first book, Greengage Plots. When I heard that Ms. Sterner-Radley had decided to write a sequel to that book, I was overjoyed.
I am happy to report that the second novel in this series is a great match to the first and is equally adorable. We get to return to the beautiful island of Greengage and visit with all of the same lovable and crazy characters we were introduced to in the first tale, as well as meeting up with a few new and equally eccentric islanders. The main characters, Kit Sorel and Laura Howard are still on the island. Kit is the librarian at the local library and Laura is the head of Greengage Farm. Both are now officially out as girlfriends to this small English island of about six thousand people. Kit is still playing amateur detective for the folks on the island, and Laura is still working very hard, both on the farm and as the head of the leading family of Greengage Island. There are mysteries to be solved, relationships to be mended, and a mystery involving a stuffed badger and fox, though I will let you find out the whys and what-fors.
This novel is just as wonderful as the first book in the series. The characters are just as quirky, even the ones we meet for the first time, and the humor is still the dry British humor I found so delightful in the first story. This is a feel good tale that will brighten your day and make you laugh out loud as you read. Greengage Shelf is a great book to read on a dreary day, or a day when you are feeling low, or on a good day as well, because it can only make the day better.
This is not a good standalone novel. You really should read the two books in the correct order to enjoy both tales properly. They are well worth your reading time.
A special note: There is a short story about this lovely world called “Greengage Holiday Cheer” that covers a period of time between Greengage Plots and Greengage Shelf, so this novel could be considered the third in the series. The short story was originally published as part of a Christmas anthology but has since been published separately as part of this series. It is well worth reading too, so check it out as well.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review.
So Kit’s still adjusting to living life in Greengage but she’s back in detective librarian mode to help solve the mystery of Alice Caine’s missing book! Of course this isn’t the only mystery on the vivacious island of Greengage and it isn’t the only worry for our lovely Kit. Relationship worries with the lovely Laura also have Kit on her toes.
I was already in love with the quirky island of Greengage, and Kit Sorel, after reading the first book in this series, but now after book two, I know I love it so much more! Kit is amazing and she makes the whole story for me, but what was even better was all the thrill of the mystery. I mean how can one tiny little English island be filled with such puzzling problems? Luckily, Kit’s a great detective, and her sleuthing creates and exciting story that had me gripped from the second we got our first tidbit of information.
Emma has an amazing way of combining a quirky sense of humour, with idioms only such unique and memorable characters could possess. It’s also that quick wit, sarcasm, and attitude of Kit’s that just makes the story so loveable, she is sceptic, yet filled with positivity and a can do attitude that really cheers you up as a reader and has you laughing at her mutterings, thoughts, and straight to the point nature.
It’s also the silliness and quirky items and ideas that crop up in the storyline, whether they be part of the main plot or sub-plots, they just make the story such fun; and a total joy to read.
As if there would be anything about this book I didn’t like, totally impossible. Loved every second and dying for more from Greengage now!!!
Kit and Laura have such a great relationship. They fit together like puzzle pieces, complement each other perfectly, and are both unique in their own way. The love I see between them is well balanced between romance, and banter, even if Laura doesn’t always get when Kit is joking around, but that is what makes them so endearing. In fact they very much remind me of a two people I very much admire (I think you know who I mean!), and I love them for it!
Couldn’t put this down, once I started I needed to get to the bottom of this mystery – come on, I mean Kit needed my help, how could I refuse. When you get a book like this you really never want it to end, and I mean this was totally amazing! Can’t wait for more stories from the island of Greengage!
It felt good to be reunited with my friends from Greengage. The silly antics of Kit, the bookshelf mystery, the eccentric uncle, the quirks of the islanders, they all make me chuckle. Kit and Laura are such an endearing characters. I love how they adore each other. This installment was as enjoyable as the two previous books. Highly recommended.
I had such a good time listening to this audiobook. The characters are so quirky and entertaining. I wish there were more books to the series. Laura and Kit are so adorable together. Kit always manages to get mixed up in helping at least one person on Greengage solve a problem. Laura finally has had enough of her own family and gently goes about fixing things. I loved all the footnotes added in. The narrator was again just perfect.
I was looking forward to reading about Kit and Laura’s developing relationship, but instead the author decided to throw in obstacles, including having to hide their relationship from Laura’s uncle. The story also includes a little mystery for Kit to solve. At times this was a irritating book to read, I couldn’t understand why they just didn’t tell Uncle Maximillian to get lost, or at the very least not pander to his possible prejudices. Perhaps the author thought he was amusing, if so I definitely wasn’t the target audience. For me it just took up space that could have been used to explore Kit and Laura’s normal life.
The story wasn’t bad and had some fun moments, but it left me the feeling it could have been better.
I really wanted to love this book but only liked parts of it
Emma Sterner-Radley's imaginative and always entertaining fan fiction stories online were my introduction to her writing several years ago and I've been a big fan ever since. I read the first book in this series (Greengage Plots) when it was released in 2018, but not the subsequent novella (Greengage Holiday Cheer); I remembered very little of the first book going into Greengage Shelf but didn't feel lost in terms of the story. I'd say that the first and third books could be read as stand-alone stories but the advantage of reading a full series (and in order of publication in this case so they're chronological) is getting to spend more time with the characters.
I read the first half of Greengage Shelf in a day and felt like someone reunited with a good friend after a long separation; the first pages had me laughing and enjoying the odd quirks of the locals on the island where the story takes place all over again. Surprisingly, there are footnotes in the book but don't let that deter you because their purpose is to help fill in some gaps when past events are referenced and they are often hilarious and snarky in their delivery of that information, not the stuff of stuffy research papers. They're fun and add another level of entertainment but take some getting used to when read in an ebook; flipping to them was easy enough but flipping back less so for me. That may depend on the e-reader device or app being used.
I finished the book the next day and was less enthused. There are several plots threads that take up a large portion of the book, sometimes at the expense of the romance between Kit and Laura, one of which wore thin quickly and did not resolve in a satisfactory way. One of the great appeals for me in the first book was the characters but in this book, Laura's Uncle Maximillian takes up alot of space on the page and sucks the energy out of the scenes he's in; perhaps if other characters had been given some of that attention instead it would have helped to prevent or reduce the dip in interest in the latter half of the book. The humor and enjoyment came back towards the end of the book as the focus returned to more likable characters, but on balance it wasn't enough to counteract the middle lull for me and left me feeling disappointed.
Those who have read the first book and loved the oddities of the island dwelling characters and their traditions will find that here along with Kit's advice giving (for better or worse) and inept sleuthing. The book has its merits but because of the subplots that go on too long for my taste and take attention from other threads I would have rather seen develop further in the storyline, I'd recommend other books by Sterner-Radley ahead of this one. I suspect that more books would be possible in this series given the fact that the island setting has more than enough inhabitants and quirks to fill several more books, and would hope that if there are future stories in this series that I'd enjoy them more than this one.
I received an advance reading copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Oh my God, I laughed so hard I had to run to the WC! Emma Ridley has triumphed again with her tale and wonderful characters.
I have so enjoyed this series, written showing wide ranges of emotion and sensitivity. The location of this series lends itself to the unique characters that are lovingly developed and intricate to the story. Ms Emma Ridley has show deft storytelling skills. She managed to let us use our imagination in the story to bring the love of Laura and Kit to life. Honestly this series is a truly clean yet warm and lusty when needed story of understanding love. That is a unique skill to write, it is well worth the read time!
Another wonderful trip to Greengage. I only wish there were more for me to read, because I love the village (and Kit and Laura, too), and I wish it was a place I could visit!
I love the little quirky village of Greengage. The odd characters in the village crack me up with their little nuances. It was also wonderful to come back to the village to visit and see how Kit and Laura were getting along. But of course, family has to find ways of ruining things. Can I just say from the get go that I couldn't stand Laura's uncle? He is what makes me rate this book a 4 instead of a 5. He grated on my nerves from the get go. I mean, it is technically what the character was brought in to do so it worked but honestly... the whole sub plot of Laura having to keep Kit a secret as far as her being her girlfriend goes at the start was not sitting well with me in the least. I don't care if the old coot (Laura's uncle) was heartbroken or not. He was a grown a** man and should suck it up and not have others suffer so as not to hurt his feelings. -.- Moving aside from that, the antics Laura and Kit found themselves in at times were hilarious... literally from the start with the window... and another example later with the phone booth incident. LOL The other plot of the missing book of Ms Alice's and the amateur sleuthness of Kit rounds out the book and makes for a quirky mystery rom-com of cozy proportions. Another wonderful read from this series. :)
Once again, Emma Sterner-Radley has given me a delightful addition to the Greengage series and it is packed with bizarre situations, puzzling mysteries and the same quirky and endearing characters I've grown rather fond of from the first book in this entertaining collection. I was beyond happy that I got to peep into the hearts and minds of Kit and Laura. My heart melted into a puddle of goo as I watched their relationship blossom and thrive despite the difficulties they faced because Kit was trying her best to help Widow Craine find her missing book and get to the bottom of who was messing with her bookshelf. They also had to contend with Laura's unconventional uncle who has a passion for turning the entire Howard estate upside-down, interfering in their love life and above all things; taxidermy... I must tip my coffee cup to this wonderful author because she has given me everything that I usually adore in a novel—endless humour, an enthralling light mystery coupled with a sizzling passion between two wonderful women. The weekend reading marathon was certainly worth it because I loved every word of this!
This return trip to the tiny island of Greengage is a fun ride. The zany antics of the Greengagers are just as funny, and occasionally outrageous, as in the first book in the series, a and the romance may be even sweeter. Highly recommended!
It’s a new Greengage book! It’s a cosy mystery! It’s, in a word, delightful!
Laura’s eccentric uncle is visiting (and nursing a broken heart). A seemingly unimportant book has gone missing and Kit has promised to help out. Laura and Kit try to be stealthy in more situations than one. Guess how well that goes…
There’s trivia and extra info in footnotes (which I loved), more quirky islanders than you can shake a cat at, and while Greengage Shelf by Emma Sterner-Radley isn’t laugh-out-loud funny all the time, it will keep a smile on your face for a long time time after you’ve finished the book.
I started the reading thinking "Laura needs to grow a back bone for crying out lout" and ended it with a big "it was about time!".
For me, it was another fun reading, the whole mystery was engrossing. One could also say frustrating? Surely. Like I said on book #1, the island people do grow on you, but they can be quite the pain in the arse. Laura and Kit are always the highlight of it though, their interactions even when frustrating are amusing. I hope we'll get more of them in the future, I'm hooked on these two, but I hope their relationship would suffer less next time.
Kit Sorel should have been a detective on her previous life because she just keeps resolving mistery after mistery. I love the way her relationship insecurities were dealt with, because it reflects how many of us deal with those stuff.
That weird uncle was a blast to read, super funny how unique he was lol
I love the 3rd book, hopefully we will have more from the Greengage Island and their islanders.
I've read the previous Greengage books and I enjoyed them. I also really enjoyed this one! I've been in the mood for a fun/lighthearted book and this hit the spot quite nicely. I really enjoy Kit and Laura's relationship - even when it takes a bit of a backseat to other zany plots. (I also really enjoy Rachel and Shannon!) And I did really enjoy the footnotes, oddly enough. This was a nice, easy read and a great addition to the series!
The writing was good as always and the book had it's charms. I loved the first book in the series and was looking forward to reading more about Kit, Laura and the other quirky inhabitants of Greengage.
I got quite bored with parts of this book though. The "mystery" part of the book was a bit too much and long winded and while the uncle part was somewhat funny in the beginning he became just annoying after a while.
This was a great story and read ,this continues about the Villagers of Greengage and there antics. Another brilliant hilarious story. The author Emma Sterner -Bradley certainly knows how to write a story with lots of humour and entertain her reader's me included. Each book. I read leaves me smiling and laughing so thank you. Cannot wait for the next one. Highly recommend you give these a chance of you haven't ye.
Kit has yet another mystery to solve. I’m not sure why people expect a librarian to solve all their problems, but the island residents here do. There are a few things going on – Laura’s odd uncle is staying with her and creating problems for her and Kit’s romance time, a book is missing and the family members don’t want Kit looking into it, Rachel and Shannon have issues, and more. There’s a lot going on and plenty of humorous moments. The snarky footnotes were funny, too.
It was a refreshing return to Greengage with Kit's sleuthing (being nosy) skills and Laura trying to be the "Lady of the Manor" & maintain a loving relationship with Kit. Uncle Maximillian was a hoot! The residents of Greengage don't disappoint in this installment of village life. Well written indeed and the humor is spot on.
This third book in the Greengage series is as well written as the previous ones. Laura, Kit, and the Greengagers story continues with a bit of mystery over a missing book, an unexpected guest in Howard Hall, business upheaval, and more. Oh, and don't forget about the annual kitten race! To find out what that's all about, put this book on your must read list!
I really enjoy the Greengage books. Each chapter is a funny little story, the sum of which are hilarious, cute and appealing stories of life in Greengage with Kit and Laura's loving relationship growing along the way. Ths time around there were several mentions of marriage in the future, so let's hope for another installment soon!
This is a brilliant addition to the Greengage series. Adorableness all around, the mysteries and uncle Maximilian is a odd ball but he’s such a goofball. The moments between Kit and Laura are absolutely sweets and beautiful.
I really enjoy these books. Full of humour, the storyline is always good. The super sleuth librarian. Full of humour, I couldn't stop laughing. I highly recommend this book and all of greengage series.
Wonderful update on the activities on Greengage. The story arc is low key but almost irrelevant given the montage of hilarious characters and scenes -- not to mention the footnotes. Overall a fun read (and of course there is the annual kitten race event.)
Read a beautiful written story with some romance, a bit of angst, and a few surprises along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be looking out for more stories from this author.
