The Stasis Stories #3

Radiation Hazard

Rate this book
This hard Sci-Fi novel is the third book in the “Stasis Stories,” a series of optimistic tales of technological innovation in the near future. They follow Kaem Seba, a sickly and financially destitute young man with extraordinary math talents. With his friends, he’s developed a device that allows him to stop time within limited volumes of space-time.
In this story, Kaem and company are commercially developing “Stade,” which is what they call a piece of space-time that’s in stasis. Stade’s phenomenal properties (because it essentially can’t be altered since time’s been stopped within it) allow it to reflect all radiation. When a nearby nuclear reactor undergoes a meltdown, the first thought is that stade might be used to limit the radioactivity from the accident.
But a little further thought makes it obvious that stade is also the perfect material for dealing with radioactive waste. They also become interested in using it to remediate a toxic chemical dump.
They’re still using it to build rocket engines. And working on plans for a space elevator!

I was born on the island of Cyprus where my dad was employed as a mining engineer. We moved to the Philippines (more mining) when I was three and then to Arizona when I was 9. I went to med school at the University of Arizona and did a residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Kansas. I taught Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until I retired in 2017.

I've always loved science fiction and it's been great fun getting to write some. I also like music and have a little home recording studio. You can read more, listen to some music and look at some of my art, at http://laury.dahners.com/ if you like.

Dahners, Laurence E. Radiation Hazard. Stasis Stories No. 3. Kindle, 2020.
In Radiation Hazard, Laurence Dahners continues to have fun with finding creative uses for a stasis field. Since it is a perfect reflector of all radiation, it has obvious uses in the nuclear power industry, and some that are not-as-obvious. An accident at a nuclear power plant provides Kaem Seba and his team the perfect opportunity to find a new market. The series continues to be entertaining, if a bit repetitive at times. 4 stars.

Sti a fun read... but...

This such a fun story! I will definitely read more.

But...

If the next book continues the relentless repetitive dialogue where the experts all... ALL... repeat the exact same scenario about this unbelievable invention (yes, yes, it is actually frictionless and can withstand a quadrillion trillion pounds of pressure on a millimeter sized Stazed Stade)... over and over and over... I'll skip through many pages.

Also, if EVERY person that meets the main characters are as predjudiced as all the rest of us white, mature, working professionals are, I may recommend this series be included in our quarterly harrassment training materials required by government mandate for every employee in our company.

Other than those annoyances, this is still a fun and interesting storyline. LOL. I liked it. But only 3 stars for the above reasons :)

5 No Athiests' In Foxholes Stars

Radiation Hazard is the third book in The Stasis Stories series by Laurence Dahners.

I believe my overall improvement in enjoyment for this installment in the series is multi pronged. First, and foremost, is the implementation of a cure for Seba's sickle-thalassemia. I'm majorly invested in his brilliance, and wellbeing. Second, that there is true progress in Stade being understood and appreciated in further branching reaches, to hopefully soon encompass the entire world. And third, that he put so many naysayers in their place.

I think it's interesting and pivotal how much of a focus Dahners put on people's innate prejudices. The theories stated in this book seem reasonable and sound. While, like in this fictional world, there are still yet many people who would deny their own prejudices, prejudice is such a widespread issue. I think the author makes some sound arguments, in the characters individually responses to receiving prejudice and their, and in how laid out some plausible avenues to respond realistically.

I'm excited to further explore yet undeveloped approaches to utilizing Stade, and the obstacles that invariably arise in their path. I imagine now that they are gaining in popularity, and renown, that someone will try to resort to nefarious means in acquiring this unprecedented cash cow.

I'm still a little put off by Ayra. I think she touched on a significant reason why when she realized for herself that she seemed more excited about their improving income and cash flow than any romantic entanglements with the Mc. That we've already experienced multiple instances where Kaem allows her almost bullying attitude to go unacknowledged or in any way counteracted further disaudes me of positively viewing her. Maybe once she gets over jealousy, without real intent (because she probably noticed he liked her and it made her feel good but had no intention of ever acting on or acknowledging it) her positive qualities will no longer be so hard to appreciate...?

It's been truly fascinating to experience the possibilities of such a revolutionary 'material'. Simply touching on what has already been achieved within the first three books astounds the mind. If only a realistic alternative presented itself, for even one of these proposed functions.

Laurence Dahners is the grand master at writing stories about super-Einstein level genius inventors who come up with history altering theories that lead to products that change the world. Then add in adventure, a mix of thrills abs just the right touch of romance, and you get a perfect sci-fi formula. He used this formula in his utterly fantastic Elle Donsaii series (each of the book of which I’ve steeper’s rly reviewed, and all of which I cannot endured strongly enough). And now, in his new The Stasis Stories he is doing it again. The hero this time is Karen Seba, a complex person who starts off with severe medical issues and more but whose sheer brilliance guides this series. Kaem’s tale is very similar in structure to the Donsaii books, but it’s original enough to be vastly enjoyable. I loved the first two books and have been eagerly awaiting the next ones. Somehow I missed Radiation Hazard (Book 3) at first but now I’ve binge read through both it and Halting the Reaper (Book 4). All I can say is that this is addictively wonderful “I can’t put it down - just 1 more page - whoops it’s 5am hie did the whole night fly by” fantastic. Wonderfully crafted characters, great plots and overarching story arcs and plausible speculative science (here evolving around a new time stasis theory and resulting inventions). I literally cannot recommend these stories strongly enough, though I do strongly suggest starting with book 1 and reading forward.

I really want to enjoy this book. I just wish the “biases” and “wokeness” would be a little less in your face. I’m on board with the messaging and I even felt like it was too much. Once or even twice would have been fine, but it was over and over and over.

This book also lacks any actual plot. New use for Staze! Someone new doesn’t believe it. “What the hell? It has a frictionless surface”. “You should believe him! He’s a genius”

I am really going to push pause for a long time before reading book 4, because without reading it I know the entire story. I just hope some of these characters can work through their biases.

This review is a real bite, because I really like Laurence Dahners' books. I've read at least a dozen books. But this one drove me nuts. Radiation Hazard is replete with political correctness; "White man bad", "Man of color good". Total virtue signaling. Once or twice would be almost tolerable, but over and over and over again, really pissed me off. If Mr. Dahners can't or won't stand on his writing skills without stooping to satisfy his publisher, then perhaps he could be successful without a publisher. I'm just sick that such a good writer would cave into this nonsense.

I just finished Radiation Hazard-and I owe Laurence Dahners an apology. I put off reading this series because it didn’t sound that interesting. Even though I had the same reaction to another one of his series and was wrong then too! Once again, he has created characters that will stay with you always. The science -the what if question that is the stepping stone of the story will start your imagination humming. All of Dr Dahners stories will stay in my kindle library always and will be re-read frequently. I can’t wait for whatever is next.

This series just keeps getting better.

I'm more impressed with Laurence dahners books now than I was when I first started reading them. His characters seem more realistic even though brilliant beyond belief. I love the intellectual curiosity and dexterity he shows in these books. I almost feel like I've been to school and learned something important after reading one of Dahner's books.

I love Laurence Dahners writing!

I have loved every single book of his that is in Amazon. I am reduced to having to wait for him to write more. Fortunately he doesn't make me wait long. Pick up the first book of any series he's written and start there. If you have read any book of his, this one is just as good. Buy it, read it. Then join me in waiting for the next one. Write fast Mr Dahners!

Very good book but not a lot of drama

Like most of Dahner’s stories this one does not have a lot of life-threatening drama. It’s more of a slice of life story set around someone who has just revolutionized physics with a brand new type of material. However, it is still a good story and the normal, and sometimes extraordinary, hazards that affect the characters ring true.

Loved it

I have read all the books by this author and if you like one of his books you will like all of them his stories are great. His mix of science and fiction are wonderful and explained so that you understand the science behind the story. To bad science can’t make what he thinks up life would sure be easier.

Number 3

If I have any complaint, it is that I see some elements repeated in his previous books. Someone is young, they can not be smart enough to fulfill the actions taking place. But then it is much better than many authors who get locked into repeating them selves over and over, rinse, and repeat again

I like the science fiction, I didn't like...

The constant drubbling of age, race, gender prejudice. Its fine to include it but EVERY interaction was obvious amd then discussed. I'm a minority and I've had prejudice encounters but not every engagement.

I also didn't like how abruptly this book ended.

Restructuring space exploration and nuclear containment needs help

Serious medical problems need to be addressed with very expensive treatments so money becomes an issue for the team. Corporately, a nuclear reactor malfunction needs containment, and space launch companies become their first customers.

Brilliant

I always have to finish Dahners' books immediately, they are so good. And in this one he didn't shy away from prejudices and how prevalent and complicated they can be. Loved it. Story itself was amazing with more uses being found for Stade!

Very, very good

Ok, I think I've found (and read) all of them now. I enjoy the people, the way they interact with others and the technology, even the archers. Thanks for writing them for us.

This one got a little boring. The information about the stasis field is now out, but nobody believes it. It got kind of old to read about people not believing the material could exist. It was probably mentioned about 100 times how to hold the piece of stade because it was so slippery. Repeats of the same conversations over and over again. The relationship stuff wasn't much better. I still don't like the CFO. I am not sure I would read another one if it came out, I just don't see it going anywhere.

An interesting read as always for his books. The do make you think. In this book he also touched on prejudices not just the ageism he usually touches but also racial prejudice that we all might be more aware of.

Excellent

Good story, excellent people depicted. Tension between the two women and one man ( clueless about women, as most of us are) helps drive the story, but the technology is wild. I've read about "stasis" before, but never thought about it like this.

Another good book

I really love this author. I love both the science and the kindness he puts in his books. Helping others with science not just doing it for monetary gain. Plus fun adventures. Highly recommend all his books
