Wow! A heart-throbbing, intense story that makes you jump off the couch and keeps you on the edge of your seat, biting pillows and spitting out feathers!
Two stranger women on a train share their most intimate secrets: one is being cheated on by her husband, while the other is having an affair with a married man. They share vodka, a few laughs, their resentments and regrets, and then say their goodbyes. While one thinks their paths will never cross again, the other is already planning their next encounter.
Selena catches her husband Graham in the act—or rather, catches their nanny in the act, jumping up and down on her naked, cheating husband (thanks to the security cameras she installed to monitor her two sons when she works late at the office, but accidentally caught the wrong boy’s misdemeanors!).
Meanwhile, Anna lets her boss take advantage of her, engaging in a forbidden relationship until she gets caught by his wife. But that’s okay! Anna is a con artist, guided by her father, changing her appearance, name, and lifestyle like a chameleon. But this time, she has no intention of letting her new “friend” slip out of her life. She introduced herself as Martha from the train and keeps sending Selena text messages, even though Selena refuses to reply.
During their 7:45 train journey, she secretly suggests: “Don’t you ever wish your problems would take care of themselves? Maybe your nanny will disappear!” And, as if by magic, Selena’s wish comes true: Geneva, their devoted nanny, never returns. She vanishes. Her husband begs for forgiveness, but what if this is just the beginning of an even bigger problem Selena has to solve? What if this change could destroy her life and family forever?
Secrets, twists, and mind-blowing revelations! As the saying goes, “Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.” So, who will die? Who will survive?
I don’t want to give away more spoilers about this multi-POV, action-packed, surprising page-turner (I stopped counting the narrators after one of the children’s POVs, and I found the old officer’s narration digging into the cold case unnecessary). Thankfully, we don’t get the POVs of scumbag cheating husband Graham, the devoted and controlling ex-lover Will, or the sweet and naive Ben!
Overall, I loved the characters, the intriguing pacing, and the exciting story development. Some of the revelations were predictable, and there was too much narration at times, which felt overwhelming. I would have preferred to read only Anna and Selena’s POVs since they are the ones sharing secrets and setting the plot in motion.
So, I’m cutting a few points for those reasons and rounding 3.5 stars up to 4 for this unputdownable, nail-biting, and extremely frustrating “It’s Martha, by the way, from the train” read!
