Originally published as Fly a Little Higher and now updated and revised to coincide with the film release of Clouds , Laura Sobiech tells the amazing, true story behind the song and the movie. “Okay, Lord, you can have him. But if he must die, I want it to be for something big . I want someone’s life to be changed forever.” This is what Laura Sobiech prayed when she found out her seventeen-year-old son had only one year to live. With this desperate prayer, she released her son to God’s will. At that point, Zach Sobiech was just another teenager battling cancer. When his mother told him to think about writing goodbye letters to family and friends, he decided instead to write songs. One of them, “Clouds,” captured hearts and changed lives, making him an international sensation. This story is a testament to what can happen when you live as if each day might be your last. It’s a story about the human spirit. It shows how God used a dying boy from a small town in Minnesota to touch the hearts of millions—including top executives in the entertainment industry, major music artists, news anchors, talk show hosts, actors, priests and pastors, and schoolchildren across the globe. And above all, it’s an example of the amazing things that happen when someone shares the most precious thing he has—himself. “I’m not a musician; I’m just a filmmaker, and my prayer is that you get an opportunity—both through the reading of this beautiful book and the watching of our film based on it—to experience what I will fail to put into the magic and inspiration of Zachary David Sobiech.” —Justin Baldoni, filmmaker and director of Clouds
I happened to come across the trailer of the Disney movie 'Clouds' one day a few months ago and found out it was based on a true story of a young boy Zach Sobiech who, before he lost his battle with cancer in 2013, used his musical talent to write a song that not only broke records but also became an inspiration to so many people, young and old. So when I happened to chance upon the updated version of the book, previously published as 'Fly a Little Higher' written by Zach's mother Laura Sobiech being available to request on NetGalley, I put in a request to read it. I still have to watch the movie but all I can say is that by the end of the book, I was crying!! It hits the hardest whenever I read about young people dying either by a fatal illness like cancer or an accident...it just hurts to see all that promise and potential taken away 💔.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Nelson Books/Thomas Nelson and Laura Sobiech for the e-Arc of the book. Heartbreaking, yet inspiring 💕!
You feel like you know the Sobiech family after reading this book. Laura's writing style is beautiful and incredibly down-to-earth at the same time. It's a truly moving story of a family who knew they were going to lose their brother and son, and used every moment of the time he had left to bring joy into the world. Definitely read this before you see the movie "Clouds" on Disney+!
My daughter sang the song "Clouds" for a choir concert, which got me interested in the story. I fell down a rabbit hole of research about Zach Sobiech's life and ended up being incredibly inspired by it. This book is inspiring, moving, poignant and surprisingly happy and optimistic. Don't be put off by the subject matter and read this.
Zach Sobiech was a teenager diagnosed with a rare form of cancer who used his platform and music to raise money for others with his disease. Clouds, the updated version of Fly a Little Higher, coincides with the Disney Plus movie directed by Justin Baldoni. I saw the movie first with my mom and loved the story, but after reading the book, the movie is much more disappointing. Many events were changed and tweaked to better fit Hollywood - rather than Zach's uplifting story. The family is actually Catholic, which was never mentioned in the movie. Zach's mom's perspective on her son dying is simultaneously heartbreaking and refreshing, since she handled the situation with so much grace. It is definitely worth the read.
The pain of losing a child is one I hope to never experience 1st hand, but in 2019 my 2 oldest sons experienced the loss of their younger brother, S.W. (my ex-husbands son) to cancer. He was 20 & had been fighting cancer since he was 19. One year, endless treatments & hospitals, & then he was gone...& it all started w/ a backache. Much like Zach Sobiech, S.W. touched the hearts of everyone he encountered & was a remarkable human being.
'Clouds' is so absolutely moving & powerful, I challenge anyone to read this book & not shed a single tear, sad ones or happy ones, or to feel their hearts fill w/ positivity & hopefulness as they read about the amazing young man who was Zach Sobiech. The courage & grace that this young man demonstrated while knowing he had only a year of his very young life left to live was just astounding, & the song he wrote, 'Clouds', has been stuck in my head on repeat since I first listened to it last week. The Disney+ adaptation comes out on 10/16, but I encourage you to read this absolutely moving, deeply compelling, inspiring & powerful memoir written by Zach's mother. Highly recommended!
I loved reading it. It was truly amazing reading a mom's words while watching her son go through something so difficult. Her words and story are truly inspiring. This book is amazing. And made me sob ugly tears. Thanks for a lasting legacy and an amazing journey Zach!
Have you ever read a book that has deeply touched you? Clouds is a memoir by Laura Sobiech about the battle her son, Zach, fought with cancer. I’ll say it right here, I don’t think I’ve cried this much reading a book for a long time. It was a beautiful story of a young life lost too soon and a young man living life to the fullest while he can. The impact he had on so many people by remaining positive was very touching.
Zach Sobiech found out he had osteosarcoma right after he started high school. He fought the disease through treatments, and he seemed to have beat the disease. Then when he was 17, he found out it was back, and he only had limited time left. His mother, Laura, details his journey in this beautifully written memoir. Zach chose to make the most of his time left – to spend it with those he loved and to write and share beautiful music. Even after his passing, people kept coming up to his parents at his funeral to discuss how he had touched their lives through his songs or his small acts of kindness.
I loved that Laura Sobiech was real with her writing. She wrote about cancer and the impacts it had on their entire family, including her marriage, and how they worked through it. She was candid on the very tough decisions that had to be made, that I can’t imagine having to make as a parent. I’m tearing up just writing this. I loved the honesty. I also loved how faith played a big role in their family. I related so much to this family. They are Catholic like my own family and live near the Twin Cities in Minnesota. My husband is originally from that area and we live in Wisconsin now. Her kids went to Catholic school through eighth grades as mine do as well. She even took Zach to a Mom’s Club to get to know other moms, just as I did. This book was so relatable, which made it even more devasting to learn what the family had to go through. I loved that even though Zach had limited time on this earth, he wanted to spend as much of it as he could with his family and friends. I love that he was able to record his songs and make a difference by raising awareness about osteosarcoma. I had never heard of this type of cancer before reading this memoir.
This novel had a giant Disney Plus emblem on the cover, so I looked up the trailer for this movie. It looks excellent. My daughter keeps singing the song. We will be watching it next week.
Favorite Quotes (I had a lot -this is narrowed down!!): “Denial is a crazy thing. Sometimes it hinders people from seeing what is real and keeps them in a place they should not be, but sometimes it’s the only thing that allows people to live freely in this midst of terrifying circumstances that would otherwise cripple them.”
“But I know the people who have taught me the most about what it means to live a faith-filled life are those who live it and then wait for people to ask how.”
“We thanked the dried and dusty bones for their morbid reminder. But for now, we would shake the dust off our shoes and leave the dead where they lay. Our time hadn’t come yet, so we would fill it with the wonder of life that awaited us.”
“It was his understanding that to suffer patiently and with hope was to be a channel of grace, and to serve others in the midst of it all was a more effective example of faith than any number of words, no matter how true or profound.”
“He was a boy who understood that although the door to eternity was close at hand, he already lived in the kingdom of God.”
“We changed, and people across the globe changed, because of Zach . . . It was because he gave us the little things: a smile, a kind word, and some songs. Above all, he gave us the most precious thing he had – himself.”
“You don’t have to find out your dying to start living.”
Overall, Clouds is an inspiring, uplifting, and heartbreaking memoir. I highly recommend it.
Book Source: Review copy from Thomas Nelson for being a part of the TLC Book Tour. Thank-you!
First off, I had been getting ads on my phone for the movie and I was intrigued. When I saw that Clouds: A Memoir was up on NetGalley, I requested it without delay. I am not sure that I have laughed and cried at the same time before but I was definitely tearing up and then laughing the next paragraph. This story was so moving. I really felt Laura's heartbreak from losing her on on each page and it seemed so honest. As for the writing style, at times it was a little clunky but overall, it flowed very well and pulled me in as a reader. Overall, this was a phenomenal read and it took my focus off of myself and helped me think about what others are going through. I highly recommend to those looking for a moving story.
Rating: 5/5 Language: n/a Romance: discusses Zach and his girlfriend, marriage struggles Spiritual: the family has a strong Catholic faith Violence: death, some medical descriptions
*I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are my own and a positive review was not required.
Hope is something much bigger than anything physical we may desire. It is about raising our eyes from a point on the horizon to the heavens and into eternity.
I have watched the movie on Disney+ months ago and after finding out that it was based on a memoir book, I feel compelled to read it despite my lack of experience reading one. Zach’s experience reminded me of my passed cousin who fought for breast cancer and lost to it eventually. They had some similar personalities so it hits a little close to home and I couldn’t help but weep.
This is very beautifully written, I feel as if I were hearing a story of a close friend who fought for life, reminding us to never take life for granted because every second is a blessing. And I believe there is nothing more rewarding than being surrounded by people who loved you when your time here is up.
Until today, I have kept the Clouds song on my playlist because yes, it is very catchy and beautiful and I love it.
I finished this book in 4 days, and honestly if it wasn’t for school it would have been finished faster. Zach Sobiech was an extraordinary human being, how he lived is something that can’t be put into words. I urge everyone to read this book no matter who you are and find out more about who Zach was. Watch his movie ‘clouds’ as that will leave you so appreciative for the life you have. Laura has such a way with words that leaves you so touched and emotional with her and her family’s story.
This book was very emotional and very moving. I'm not usely this one too cry but the end hit me hard. And cried like twice. Its amazing to see God turn a 17 year old sickness into something amazing. It is a must READ.
This is not just a book about Zach’s story this is a book about a mother navigating the difficult journey of accepting loss, battling dark demons with her son and family in tow, it’s about accepting God’s plans for your life even if what he has planned is not what you expected and accepting that God has a purpose for everything that comes your way, bad or good. As a parent this book was difficult to read at times, just the utter despair and pain on Laura’s heart is so apparent in her words that she has written, how she is still a mom and wife first throughout the hurricane Zach’s cancer diagnosis throws their family into blindly but she is also so inspiring. Laura is a force of nature and shows strength in the middle of all the adversary that comes, she bears it all on these vulnerable pages and it was an honour to be able to read it all. This book was uplifting and Laura shared so much wisdom scattered throughout the pages that really perked up my ears and heart many times. I recently had the privilege of watching Clouds which was wonderfully done by Justin Baldoni who has created something so precious and Zach’s story, his journey deeply affected me. He seemed like such a positive, living life large kind of guy and I would of loved to have the chance to meet him in this life. Laura’s words show Zach’s character more purely than ever before, I cannot believe how many surgeries he had to endure but he still somehow was always happy even though he was heart-burdened, he always focused on the joy and always encouraged those around him. This is a book about how Zach navigates growing up with cancer from a pre teen to a teenager, how he mourns his own losses of physical movement and accepts his bodies limitations throughout the battle, he learns the joys of true love and how to rely on his faith to see him through the end. Again I am just floored by how mature his mind and heart truely was, he was just so special. This book broke me and yes, I cried a major river of tears when I read the last few chapters before Zach died and my heart was torn open, but also healed at the same time, the book does not leave you with a burden of overwhelming sadness, it leaves you with hope, wisdom and joy. I highly recommend you read this book.
If you have not watched Clouds please, please do so because I think it’s just a beautiful, yes it's a tragic story but I am so thankful it got told in this way. Justins words at the end of the book put it perfectly, he wrote; “My prayer is that you get an opportunity, both through the reading of this beautiful book and the watching of our film based on it - to experience what I will fail to put into words: the magic and inspiration of Zachary David Sobiech”
After watching and reading the book/film Zach's spirit has been so apparent in my own life, I now look up to the clouds on a sunny day and my cup is filled with tremendous joy and hope, I feel his presence when I play "Clouds" on guitar in the room, it just becomes laden with this massive sense of happiness in the moment which I cannot even explain. I also encourage you to listen to the soundtrack of the film but also the songs by A Firm Handshake, they are just full of emotion and again hope I do hope you have enjoyed this review and let me know if you pick up the book.
Every time I hear another story about Zach Sobiech it amazes me that we grew up only a few towns apart and he attended the same high school that a few of my church friends did but I didn’t hear anything about him until after he had passed away. My mom and I shared an iTunes account back in the day and that’s where I first heard the song “Clouds” which this re-released book is now titled. To this day I can’t hear that song without tears coming to my eyes.
Writing this review has been a bit of a struggle because the more I’ve heard about Zach over the years (I’ve participated in a Clouds Choir and I listen to the radio station that boosted him every day at work) and I think I wanted to be able to rave about this book but in the end I was really underwhelmed.
Now don’t get me wrong, I would still highly recommend this book especially if you’re interested in learning more about Zach’s story but I think everyone needs to go into this knowing that it’s written in a very “stream of consciousness” style which I wasn’t exactly a fan of. It felt jumpy and while the sections were usually dated to give some sense of the timeline I wound up feeling confused about what was going on and when. The other thing that this book made me realize is how easy it is to place ordinary people on a pedestal because of tragedy. Zach was a normal kid, he was an extroverted and friendly guy and this is a big part of why he ended up being catapulted to the heights that he was. I appreciated learning about the “human” aspect of Zach, where Laura writes about how messy he was and things like that. The more that the story focused on the “normal” and stepped away from the extraordinary steps that Zach took I realized how easy it is to idolize people. I think that allowed me to finish the book with a more objective mindset and kind of just take the story in and read it from the perspective of a family member of someone who had passed.
This book was so raw. I had to take a lot of breaks in order to keep myself from crying out all the tears my body had stored. While it had a mix of happy moments, it was also filled with heartbreak and a lot of existential struggles from Zach, Laura, and others in Zach’s orbit. I will admit that I was not prepared for the faith aspects of this book and I felt like that was unabalanced within the overall book. At times it read like a book that could have been filed in a Christian inspirational type section while the rest of the book leaned more towards “memoir written about a Christian person”.
In the end, knowing this is a republication I’m surprised that I finished the book feeling so underwhelmed. I understand that not much was changed from the original publication other than some extra information, a note from the movie’s director, and a new title but the overall way this book was written felt unfinished and slightly disconnected. It was simple and very much read like a mother telling a casual story and for that I landed on the three star rating.
**e-ARC was given to me by NetGalley and the publisher for review**
this book surely had me in tears so many times. I can't imagine being a mother whose son was slowly dying, it would definitely break me. I do really love all the things about Zach, he was only spending short of his time on this earth but he tried his best to spread positivity and happiness to others.
I have also seen the movie, the mini-documentary from SoulPancake, and read this book, and there is only one thing I could come up with. Zach was such an inspiring person, and when he was around his friends, I can sense that he would never show his pain to them. Hence why he was such a young boy with an amazing soul.
I have never met Zach in person, but I do believe that lots of people love him dearly up until his last breath. I will definitely cherish the moment that I got to know him through my screen, it's so heartwarming. He may rest in peace!!
Laura wrote this book amazingly. I don't consider myself a religious person, though this book was written in a religious way, I can assure that that's not the point. I love reading that part when Zach's family would try to seek for everything to prayers when things come worse.
I would definitely recommend this book to others if you want to seek something to motivate you to keep on moving on with your life.
“you don’t have to find out you’re dying to start living”
There simply are not enough words to truly explain the impact this story had on me. I’ve never cried so much reading any book ever.
I originally watched the movie on Disney+, having hardly any previous knowledge of Zach’s story. Having watched cancer take someone special from me and my family, it was already a story I knew would be emotional for me, but I really wasn’t at all expecting how much it would inspire me. After watching the film, I really wanted to read the book to really understand their story and how it really happened.
I’ve been struggling a lot recently with finding enjoyment in daily life and even just the will to get out of bed every day, but reading this really put so much into perspective for me. life is SO precious. there’s so much to live for. this filled me with so much hope and light that i haven’t had in a long time .. as cheesy as it sounds.. Zach’s positivity and drive despite all he was faced with is so motivating. I’m thankful i found Zach’s story and it was able to inspire me and help me through such a bad time..
When selecting a new book to read, I wanted a book that appealed to multiple themes I am interested as a young adult and high school student in 2020. Clouds by Laura Sobiech is a great book, which I highly recommend to my peers. This book was fit to all of my expectations. It had young love, a passion for music, and family issues all tied into a young man with terminal cancer's life. The main character is a bright young man who has to go through the challenges of being a senior in high school--with cancer. As reading, I shared updates with my mom and she was intrigued as well; However, I would recommend it more to a teenager because of how the high school experience is portrayed--more relatable to a teenager at the time. It is not an easy read, and it gives the reader mixed emotions for sure. The book is also based off of a true story which adds to the emotions that Laura Sobiech pulls out. Through the book, it not only motivated me to want to donate to cancer programs for young adults, but it also serves as a reminder that everyone is immortal so we must live life to the fullest.
Laura Sobiech has lovingly written her son Zach's memoir, Clouds, after losing him in an agonizing battle with cancer. A heartbreaking story that will move you to tears as Zach, a young teen, learns he has osteosarcoma and little time left to live. With determination, grit, courage and great faith Zach walks the lonely path spreading hope, kindness, humor and love through his music and songs. Laughter also abounds with Zach's quips and shenanigans throughout his struggles. A story about how to live and cherish each moment as shown by a beautiful young man. I can't imagine writing about the death of my beloved child and the story does jump around a bit but the message is important and kudos to Laura Sobiech for sharing her heart and bringing Zach's voice and legacy to light. Thank you #netgalley and Nelson books for the #clouds e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
My wife and I read a few chapters of Clouds out loud every night before bed and let me tell you, this book is hard to read out loud. My vision was blurry and my voice was cracking as I read Laura's words and the story of her son Zach. As tragic as this book is, it's also inspiring and Laura tells it with a raw authenticity that requires so much strength and bravery. If 2020 has left you feeling down, this book will inspire you and bring you hope. I'm so grateful this story is being told.
I think Clouds is good for almost all ages. There are parts of the book that are pretty intense, but there's something to be learned in every chapter. If you are reading it with kids, there are discussion questions on the Zach's Movement website to help discuss some of the heavier parts of the book.
When faced with only months to live, Zach turns to music. His larger than life personality and beautiful music lifts others and teaches us all how live each day like it’s your last - to reach for the stars, even in the face of adversity.
Heartbreakingly Beautiful. A true story that will inspire you and crush you. I don’t think I’ve ever cried this much reading - my heart hurts.
God sends his angels to earth to show us the beauty of life and love and then they go back - Zach was clearly one of these angles. May his soul rest in peace.
* Zach reminded me of my cousin, my little MJ - a beautiful angle that flew away too soon because of rare form of brain tumour.
NB. I’ve now found out there’s a movie version of Zach’s story. Hoping to watch it soon.
Wow, this book was so powerful. I don't know how I had never heard Zach Sobiech's story before but it was just extra special to me because my husband is a childhood cancer survivor. He had Ewings' Sarcoma and so seeing that Zach had something similar made me hug my husband extra tight knowing he was one of the lucky ones. Zach's story receiving the platform that it will have when the movie comes to Disney Plus will be incredible and I hope people really get the message of God's love from it. Zach still is the embodiment of what it means to be a faithful Christian. God bless him and God bless the beautiful Sobiech family.
I can’t say I loved this book. It is hard to read any book that speaks of a young person dying. But, knowing this was a true story made it even harder. I have a great deal of admiration for everyone in the family, especially Zack. They seem to have handled the situation much better than most people could. It is wonderful that his life has given meaning to many people and raised so much research money for his type of cancer. Having said that, I did find the book longer than I felt was necessary. I guess, under the circumstances, any mother would want to extol all the virtues of a lost son. I just found myself wondering if; perhaps, the saying,”less is better” might apply.
I loved reading this book because it shows you how fast your life can change at any time. I think we all live day to day never even thinking about something like this and when it happens we all stop to smell the roses. I for one was like that but will try and slow down and try and be a better person because of it. Zach and his family were a very religious family and they all needed that. I truly enjoyed the book and will try and see the movie.
My heart is broken. This is the true story of Zach Sobeich; a normal teenager until osteosarcoma takes over his body. Cramming as much life into a few short months, Zach and his family go through this together and yet separately. The story is told by Zach's mom, Laura. She tells of her struggles to let him do things, to let him go, to plan his funeral, and to watch her baby die. A beautiful story.
This was an amazing read. It’s written from a Catholic mother’s perspective. Laura’s teenage son(Zach) is diagnosis with cancer. The book covers themes of redemptive suffering and hope. I SOBBED multiple times throughout the book. I’m so grateful for this novel and for Laura to share the story of her son. There’s a lot about this book and their story that I’m still processing. Highly recommend :)
This book was easy to read but very hard to put down. It was so well written and captured the life of this wonderful family going through such difficult years trying to give their son the best days of his life. I had heard of Zach and his story, but now I feel like I know him personally.
I wanted to read this desperately after I saw it was being released as a movie on Disney+. I always appreciate a great memoir and I couldn’t put this down. Laura’s an incredibly gifted writer and her emotion is real and raw. This touched my heart and her testimony is just powerful all around. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy.
Wow, what an incredible book. I first remember hearing Zach's story years ago, but it became fresh in my mind again with the release of the movie on Disney+. Zach was such an inspiration (and continues to be) for so many in this world, and I'm glad his mom, Laura, wrote this book to be shared with the world. Lots of tears were shed. What a life Zach led, and what a special family he has.
Clouds by Laura Sobiech. Such a beautiful sad story. I remember being at the 1st “Clouds” at the Mall of America in Minnesota with my daughter Kristine and her two sons. I hope someday for the cure for cancer and nobody else has to suffer.
