A Fool's Gold Wedding

Rate this book
2 hours, 48 minutes

Sparks fly when the sister of the bride meets the brother of the groom in this brand-new Fool’s Gold love story…

Abby Hendrix would do anything to help with her beloved sister’s wedding, even play tour guide to the off-puttingly brilliant—and unexpectedly gorgeous—brother of the groom. She’s a small-town schoolteacher; he’s a gifted surgeon. Nothing intimidating about that! She’ll just ask him to help her plan a top secret surprise for the wedding. No pressure.

Joaquin Kincaid has always been book-smart and people-awkward, and Abby’s sweet and social nature triggers an unexpected yearning inside him. His whole life, he’s been an outsider, while she’s so popular she’s able to convince an entire town to go along with her wild ideas. For the first time ever, he’s met a woman who accepts him as he is, quirks and all, and he feels himself falling in love. Could Abby love him, too? Or, when she discovers the real reason he came to Fool’s Gold, will he lose her forever?

I had issue with too many things in this book. The plot secret didn't seem all that "bad" to me to warrant the drama and outburst by the lead woman. The lead male was supposed to be really bad with people and have a hard time and none of that was shown. He did fine with people but then again that was explained because she brought the best out in him. That's a lazy excuse to me because what are we told as young woman all our lives? You cannot change a man! lol

I do normally love Fool's Gold books but this one not so much.

After a long time away, we finally get a new Fool's Gold story! It'd been long enough that I somewhat forgot all the character dynamics (there are a lot of people in the greater Hendrix Clan), but it worked itself out ... mostly fun, fast-paced, predictable conflict and resolution. Exactly what I expected going in to the reading. HOWEVER ... I have one very significant issue with this story...

I was so excited to see that Susan Mallery was giving us another Fool's Gold story, this time it was Abby Hendrix, adopted daughter of Liz and Ethan (Liz being her birth father's younger sister) and surgeon Joaquin Kincaid. Abby's older sister Melissa is marrying Joaquin's younger brother Davis and Abby is given the job of escorting him around Fool's Gold for the time he's visiting. It's a novella so a quick read but it was lovely to see some of my favourite couples from the series, especially Simon and Montana, whose story I've always loved. I'm really hoping that Susan Mallery will treat us to a few more stories from the younger generation of Fool's Gold residents, just so I can get my fix of this wonderful place.

What a lovely, lovely story! I only have one complaint: It's was too short! Some great cameo appearances by old friends which now makes me want to read the entire series again for the bajillionth time!

As an added bonus, there was no graphic sex scenes.

A Fool's Gold Wedding

This is the kind of story that I love. Susan Mallery makes her characters seem so real. Joaquin and Abby both win my heart almost from the very beginning. Loved it.

Another fantastic visit to Fool's Gold to a sweet wedding setup that leads to another love match. A fun easy to enjoy listen. I've followed this series since it began and as always can't wait for the next book to come out!

I loved returning to the Fool's Gold series! I'm still not a fan of Simon's character so I'm glad he wasn't in it too much. (Although he still did a crappy thing in this one!) Joaquin and Abby's story was short and sweet. I hope the author revisits this series again in the future!

From the romantic perspective, this book is nice and sweet. But the rest of the plot? It just didn't make sense at all to me. Why would a renowned surgeon need to resort to deception to get into a training program? He was in college by age twelve and is supposed to be super smart - couldn't he just find another way? Or another training program?

The plot moves on, totally ignoring these details and just focuses on the fact that Joaquin is with Abby for the wrong reasons - when there isn't really a reason. He went to Fool's Gold three weeks before the wedding to try to get Abby's uncle to accept him in this training program. But his soon-to-be-sister-in-law is as much a niece to said uncle as Abby is, so he could have tried to "use" family influence before and in different way. So why Abby and why now? No idea, other than without that the author couldn't get the plot to work...

They do fall in love, but it almost feels like everything else in the book is a set-up for them to meet, and not a very realistic set-up at that. I was totally missing being back in Fool's Gold, even with a novella, and I ended up disappointed. So, running the risk of going against everyone else's raving reviews, I'm not rating A Fool's Gold Wedding with more than 3 stars

It is a cute short story about two people who are so very different…but in my mind, so very much alike. Abby, who is all grown up now, reminds me of a sprite – happy, and funny, and just high on life. She has a quick wit, and is gorgeous, even though she doesn’t know it, and is kind right down to her very soul. And Joaquin. He is one of those characters that you just want to wrap up in your arms and hug the stuffin’ outta him. I adored him.

I won’t give you any details but know that their story is sweet and fun and reading about them falling in love made for a wonderful story. Abby has the entire town of Fool’s Gold behind her and Joaquin is and has always been on his own. He’s extremely intelligent but not so aware about the ways of the world. I will admit that I didn’t like how Abby’s friends and family all rallied around her, and pointed the blame to Joaquin only, but everyone redeemed themselves in the end, imho.

Absolutely adored this story! And it was so much fun going back to Fool’s Gold.

It was so nice to be back in Fool's Gold since it's been a while. It was like I had never left. It was great to catch up with some of the characters but where, oh where, was Mayor Marsha? She was definitely missed!

This is Abby and Joaquin's story and it was wonderful from the first page to the last. I loved their unexpected attraction and how she got him to be comfortable in his own skin especially since he is a brilliant surgeon with no people skills! But he has a secret and what will happen when she finds out? They each feel for the other something they've never felt before but is it real or just due to the upcoming wedding that they're both involved in? Joaquin's helping Abby out - even with crafts - and enjoying every minute of it. There is so much love throughout this book especially since we're leading up to a wedding. Their siblings, Melissa and Davis are getting married and it was fun to watch all the planning so their special day would unfold without a hitch.

There were so many story lines and fond remembrances. It was fun to walk the town and visit some of the places that feel like home. There were family and friends along with lots of love and romance in abundance. There is nice closure especially with the epilogue that takes place a year later and holds a special significance. There's also a wonderfully written happily ever after.

Ms. Mallery is one of my very favorite authors of contemporary romance and I can't wait to read The Friendship List of which there was a sneak peek in the back of the book. Give her books a try if you like contemporary romances filled with lots of family, friends, small towns, romance and love. You'll be glad you did!

It's always fun to be back in this world. This short one highlights what is great about Fool's Gold, the town, how family is important. Joaquin was a bit cold at the start, but quickly that changed when he was charmed by Abby. I think what worked was that Abby treated Joaquin as normal, not the smarty pants he was. I did like that Simon did call him out on why he originally came to Fool's Gold and glad when he was able to see that while that might have been why at the start, it wasn't at the end. The ending was perfect, loved that they both found their HEA.

I loved this return to Fool’s Gold! I have read the entire series multiple times. As soon as I found out about this book I preordered it. Susan Mallery is one of my favorite authors and when I start one of her books I’m instantly happy. I love her books so much that I’m always torn I’m loving the book so much that I don’t want it to end. This book was great and can be enjoyed even if you’ve never read any of the Fool’s Gold books.

This was a lovely visit back to Fool's Gold. Abby Hendrix, daughter of Ethan and Liz (Sutton) Hendrix (Almost Perfect), and soon-to-be teacher, is spending the summer helping her sister Melissa with her wedding. She's taken aback when Melissa asks her to take her fiancé's brother under her wing when he comes to Fool's Gold three weeks before the wedding. Joaquin, a brilliant and busy surgeon, hasn't made it to any family gatherings, so no one has met him yet. All she knows is that he's scary smart, so she'll put him to work if she needs to.

Joaquin, who was in college by the time he was ten, never developed social skills the way others did. He focuses exclusively on his career and dismisses other peoples' lives as "mundane." When he loses a patient to her burns, he applies and is turned down for a fellowship program with Dr. Simon Bradley, who just happens to be Abby's uncle. At the story's beginning, Joaquin plans to use Abby to get to Simon and plead his case directly. Those plans go out the window when he meets Abby.

I enjoyed the first meeting between Joaquin and Abby. Neither looked forward to their forced companionship but planned to make the best of it. I had to laugh at Abby, who was utterly flummoxed by Joaquin's good looks and took a few minutes to get herself together. Even then, she babbled a bit before settling down. Likewise, Abby differed from what Joaquin expected. Her energy drew him right away, and he noticed her beauty in detail that was unusual for him. I loved seeing her give him a tour of the town and its history while he marveled at the fact that he didn't feel awkward talking to her.

I loved seeing the development of the relationship between Joaquin and Abby. Before he arrived, Abby asked her Uncle Simon how best to entertain Joaquin since they were so different. He pointed out that Joaquin wouldn't have had a normal childhood to show him her everyday life. So she did. They spent a lot of time together working on wedding stuff. Joaquin's enjoyed it far more than he expected and liked getting to know more about Abby. The more she learned about him, the more she ached for the things he missed in life. I loved the sweet scenes of the things they did together. Neither expected the attraction that grew between them. I loved how they looked at it practically, realizing that Joaquin would leave Fool's Gold after the wedding. However, neither could deny the feelings that grew between them, though they certainly tried. He's not into relationships, and she wants the whole marriage and family thing. But Joaquin has an ax hanging over his head and putting off dealing with it just makes it more difficult.

Shortly after he arrived, Abby introduced Joaquin to Simon when they had dinner together. Simon invited Joaquin to meet with him, where he confronted Joaquin about his reason for being in Fool's Gold so much before the wedding. Simon told Joaquin why he was turned down for the fellowship. He also asked if Abby knew the truth and advised Joaquin to tell her asap. He didn't want Abby hurt, and if Joaquin didn't tell her, Simon would do it himself. While Joaquin insisted he had no intention of hurting Abby, he also kept putting off his confession. As his feelings for her grew, so did his guilt. Simon ticked me off when he followed through on his threat after Joaquin didn't move fast enough for him. I ached for Abby and her feelings of betrayal, hurt, and anger. I also hurt for Joaquin, who realized too late how badly he screwed up.

It hurt to watch the two of them struggle with their feelings, and I kept my fingers crossed that they would find their way through it. I liked seeing Abby's Aunt Montana (Simon's wife) get involved, help Joaquin know the truth, and offer to help him win Abby back. Joaquin won my respect and admiration with his heartfelt apology and determination to show her how he changed. I liked that Abby made him work for her forgiveness but didn't draw it out too long. There was a nice twist involving Simon that helped move things along. I appreciated that both Joaquin and Abby didn't rush their relationship. The epilogue was fantastic and a perfect ending for the story.

It's been so long since I last read a Fool's Gold novel (2016). She had already written over half the series before I discovered Fool's Gold and decided to binge them. I've honestly forgotten who is who and how they're all related. So for some parts of this I was a little lost as to the family dynamics and relationships, but it was nice to have those moments of recollection and get updates on some of the older characters.

For the most part, I enjoyed this book. I liked Joaquin. He was the Doogie Howser, M.D. of romance books. I can certainly understand why he was socially awkward (although we rarely saw that side of him). After all, he didn't grow up with a normal childhood and was in college by age 13. Abby was a really sweet heroine who had some self-doubts about her intelligence when up against Joaquin. But she's a teacher, so she's far from stupid, she just didn't think she was as smart as him. I loved that Joaquin was always quick to lift her up and tell her that she's beautiful and smart and to never doubt that. He really was a sweet guy and he just meshed well with Abby, despite their obvious differences.

My biggest issue with this book was the 'fight' they have at the end. I just didn't get the huge deal and why it was considered a major deception. The author had already noted Joaquin was socially awkward and not the best with words. But I don't think there was any questioning his heart and feelings for Abby given how much time they spent together over those few weeks. So it seemed way overblown and pointless.

The plot was a bit weak, so that's why I give this 3 instead of 4 stars. But it was great to be back with the Fool's Gold family again, even if for only a short time.

This is a novella that can be read in one sitting. It was really nice to return to Fool's Gold, California for this story. Readers are reunited with some of their favorite characters, including Simon and Montana.

Joaquin is staying in Fool's Gold for a few week's before his brother's wedding. He has an ulterior motive....he wants to meet Simon and convince the brilliant surgeon to accept him into a prestigious fellowship. He happens to make a connection with Abby, the sister of the bride, who also happens to be Simon's niece.

I didn't feel like Joaquin really did anything that terrible. He wanted to use his relationship with Abby to connect with Simon but it didn't seem really disingenuous. He really cared about her. I didn't like what a big deal Simon made about it, especially right smack in the middle of the wedding. It seemed very contrived because the story needed some angst.

A cup of coffee has more steam

Boiler plate girl with no self esteem and a self deprecating narrator in her head. Everyone around her is so beautiful and hot and successful and she’s just a teacher. If you find that you’re a self assured, intelligent person you’ll want to stop reading this drivel after Chapter 2 and I would certainly agree with you but I kept on. It’s a cute little story after that. I gave it a 3 for that reason. this is not a romance novel. There is a whiplash emotional relationship that simmers then a whiplash ending. No sexy time is shared with the reader. BOOOOOOOOO! I usually do a sexy word search before reading and forgot. I read these things to supplement my imagination and love life or when there is a lack there of. I’m sure there’s a group of readers for this genre of “romance”.

I was so happy to be back in Fool's Gold for a visit. I really enjoyed this series and the characters we've all met. A Fool's Gold Wedding brings us back to the early part of the series. Abby is the daughter of prior characters in the series. How quickly time moves.

I really enjoyed Abby. She's sweet and wants so badly for her sister's wedding to be perfect. She'll do anything to make that happen even babysit the groom's brother, Joaquin. Not that she finds that a hard chore to do. Abby ends up really liking him. Which isn't an easy thing to do what with him not really used to talking to people, period.

Joaquin doesn't really mind Abby but the real reason he's with her is to get close to her uncle Simon. Of course, the side effect of him being close to her is the fact that he ends up falling in love with her. He's not sure if she knows the real reason he first was willing to be around she'll still have feelings for him.

Abby's a much more understanding person than you'd think. She helps Joaquin meet Simon. Of course, Simon being Simon he cuts to the bottom line right away and Joaquin must face a few facts that he doesn't want to.

As a whole, this is a sweet story that lets us enjoy the town once again. A cute story to read.

Wow...cue up the tears as we head back to Fool's gold. What a fabulous look into what's been going on while we've been gone.

Abby is grown up! It's been a long time since we've gotten to visit one of my favorite towns, and as I tell people, kids grow up when you're not looking. Not only is she an adult, she's graduated from college, and has a job lined up for the Fall. She'll be teaching school in Fool's Gold. This summer, right before her teaching debut, her sister is getting married. No, I'm NOT kidding. See, we've been away too long! Abby is helping with the wedding, when she's tasked with also helping with the groom's brother while he's in town.

Joaquin, the groom's brother, is in town for the wedding. But, something is amiss. The wedding is three weeks away. Super smart, like crazy smart, like graduating college as an early teen, Joaquin must be up to something. He's a physician who doesn't vacation, so what's up with taking 3 weeks off?

This book was so much fun. Love, romance, angst, misunderstandings, and forgiveness. It's a novella so it was a quick read. Fool's Gold is a wonderful place. The homes are grand. The kids are all intelligent and good looking. Everyone works together for the common good. Who wouldn't want to live here? Take a couple of hours, grab your favorite beverage and a couple of snacks, and indulge yourself by escaping into this book.

Abby and Dr.Joaquin Lusty Friends! 3.5***** Spoiler Alert!

Abby, soon to-be Elementary teacher is home in Fool's Gold, helping with her sister's, Melissa, wedding. She is asked to play guide for Davis' older smarter, aneurotypical brother, Dr.Joaquin, who wants to get into Simon's Burn Fellowship program. Abby and Joaquin go from friends and pleasant company to lust, as they slowly fall in love with each other. Simon realized that Joaquin arrived earlier to get an introduction and possibly a chance to speak to Simon about the Burn program and his rejected application, and tells him to be honest with Abby. Of course he does not as communication and relationships along with normal activities are not his strong suit. So the con is out, even though he helped her with the place cards and votive painting, so he apologies, realizing that he loves Abby. They make up before the Melissa & Davis wedding. The 'HEA' future is theirs.

Great quick Summer read, with honesty being the best policy as the theme, and a snap shot into a distorted view into an aneurotypical's way of thinking. Life for Abby will always be about Joaquin... A cutesy read!

So any haters of insta romance should never read a .5 anything. I really don't have a problem with instant chemistry.

My only real problem is how blasé Joaquin was about basically using women in his past for easy sex. That is not an attractive look and I hate that we as women accept that men act this way. Also I hate the V card thing but that's a me thing.

Anywho...

Melissa and Davis are getting married in Fool's Gold even though they No longer live there. Davis's brother Joaquin is coming to town for the wedding and decides to come early to try and weasel his way onto Simon's program. He never expects to meet Abby. And Abby never saw him coming. She expects a stuffy curmudgeon and he expects small town life to make him roll his eyes.

Only they have easy chemistry. She laughs at him , teases him and doesn't take him seriously. She's not afraid of him. Which totally disarms him. That opens him up to trying new things and genuinely enjoying himself.

So telling Abby he was originally planning on using her is hard to say now that he really likes her.We all know eventually it will work out to a HEA but its the heartfelt apology and totally taking the blame without flinching that really makes it believably romantic.

Another gem in the Fool's Gold series in which Abby Hendrix is preparing for her sister's wedding and is asked to "take care" of the groom's brother, Joaquin. No one really knows him, as he wasn't present at any previous family gatherings and Abby, soon to begin her first year as an elementary school teacher, isn't sure she can engage him in conversation. After all, he's a gift surgeon and is reputed to be smarter than everyone else in the family.

The problem with Juaquin isn't his brilliance, but rather his poor social skills, a situation owing to his having been home-schooled until he went to college as a child and even medical school as a 17 year old. Good grief!

When Abby's uncle realizes that Joaquin really planned to attend the wedding as a way to convince him to let him learn about how to successfully treat burn victims, he lays down the law: Joaquin has to come clean with Abby or HE will! And when he learns right before the wedding that Joaquin has yet to talk to her, Sullivan does just that. Will Abby's heart be broken beyond repair? Will Joaquin go back to LA having not yet confronted her? Or will love win out in spite of his cowardice?

What I read: A Fool’s Gold Wedding by Susan Mallery

Why I picked it up: Just trying to finish off this series, and now I’ve done it!

How I read it: On ebook.

What it’s about: Abby has moved back to Fool’s Gold to begin her first year teaching, but this summer is full of her sister’s wedding preparations. It started as a bunch of craft projects, but now it’s turned into her baby-sitting the groom’s brother while he’s in town for three weeks. He’s got other motives though – meet Dr. Simon Bradley and convince him to open one more spot in his fellowship.

What I liked: It was a nice window back into Fool’s Gold – a lot of the previous couples make an appearance.

What I disliked: The “plot twist” with Dr. Simon felt a bit ridiculous. Maybe I just don’t remember much of his personality from his story 18 or so books ago.

Genre: Wedding, closed door romance.

Rating & Recommendation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and it was a good ending – but if you haven’t read the rest, I’d skip it.

This is a novella not a full length book. Melissa Hendrix and Davis Kincaid are getting married in less than a month. Sister Abby Hendrix has the time to put all the finishing details together for the wedding. Joaquin Kincaid, brother of the groom also has the time to help with final wedding plans and heads to Fool’s Gold to help.

Abby is getting ready to start her teaching career this Fall. Joaquin is a major brilliant doctor. Abby discovers he never had play dates, never did arts and crafts, never played sports. He seems very spirited to help do anything. You find out in the book why Joaquin has those three weeks to be in Fool’s Gold.

Before that news is revealed, by Doctor Simon and his wife Montana, Abby and Joaquin have some sparks that are flying. This book is very modest. Kisses only. Cute, fast story.

Cute return to Fool's Gold

But it also packs an emotional punch! Abby's sister is getting married and his brilliant brother is coming in early and needs a guide. Joaquin is a gifted surgeon, but not so good with people. So why does he enjoy spending so much time with Abby? And what will happen when she finds out the truth of why he came early?

This story has a fast pace, an uncertain yet hopeful tone with a character oriented storyline. There is no steam and the characters are vibrant and engaging. You don't have to read the rest of this series to enjoy this, but you will probably want to! This is a good, short introduction to the Fool's Gold series, or a cute addition to it, if you have already read the others. Enjoy!
