Full disclosure: I'm the author. But here is what other writers are saying about My Midnight Sun:

“My Midnight Sun is a powerful story of love, pain, and redemption.” – Joshua Hammer, author of The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu

"John Shors' new novel, My Midnight Sun, is a refreshingly different kind of love story, infused with the deep compassion, frailty, and nobility of great mythic romance. Set on the gritty streets of Bangkok and amid the mighty splendor of the Himalayas, it's also a thrilling journey that not only revels in life's wonders, big and small, but dares to find beauty at the heart of human grief and suffering." – Clay Bonnyman Evans, author of Bones of My Grandfather

“My Midnight Sun, in its essence, is an alluring tale of tragic loss and a man’s desperate search for an emotional salve. It’s also an intriguing study of a complex relationship between two people with little in common except for a need to save and be saved. Set against exotic locations ranging from the suffocating streets of Bangkok to the dangerous solitude of the Nepalese mountains, My Midnight Sun is a compelling read.” – Carter Wilson, author of Mister Tender’s Girl

“I feel like this is a book Jon Krakaur would write if he wrote love stories. A heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting story, My Midnight Sun has something for everyone—part adventure, part romance, part travel journal. But at its core, Shors has given us a beautiful novel about life and death, and how love inspires us to make the most of our short time here on this planet.” – Tiffanie DeBartolo, author of Sorrow

“My Midnight Sun pulls at your heart with lyrical prose and takes you on a breathtaking journey from the streets of Bangkok through colorful festivals in Nepalese villages to the rocky tips of the Himalayas. John Shors is the kind of writer you will not forget.” – Jennifer Alsever, author of Extraordinary Lives

An eloquently written story about a man who loses his wife in the tsunami in Thailand. Months later he returns, befriends a young Thai woman with AIDS and takes her on a journey to fulfill her last dying wish.

The author is a master at using descriptive and poetic analogies, creating a stunning portrayal of friendship, love, loss, pain, heartbreak, and compassion. His descriptions of Bangkok and the Himalayas are vivid and compelling. The relationship between Owen and Suchin is heartwarming and touchingly innocent.

I am in awe of this author and hope to read more of his work. This is a highly recommended read.

Magnificent!!!

What a beautiful story! I am so glad the author dusted this one off and publish it! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I hope the author continues these characters into a sequel. I did not want it to end. Solid story against a beautiful backdrop. Bravo Mr. Shors!!! I would have given this novel ten stars if I could! This is a must read for sure....

So glad that John decided to publish this book on his own and not let it go unread. I felt like I was on the Annapurna circuit with the characters.

A refreshing way to learn life, love and spiritual wisdom through a novel from author John Shors. I wasn’t a big fan of fiction novels until I read his book. One of my favorite lines in this book is “I’m not sure, but I know I have lost track of who I am. Sarah made me feel complete, just like you do. But I want to feel complete when I am alone.”

“I Suchin. Like your American name, Sue, and then chin"

Colorado author John Shors has the gift. It is as simple as that. In BENEATH A MARBLE SKY he created a stunning love story woven through the interstices of the 16th century Hindustani building of the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the world, a place on earth where Paradise touches mortals in a magnificent mausoleum for the beloved wife of the Emperor - a symphonic novel of surpassing craftsmanship and beauty, that novel is also a book that informs the reader about the differences between Muslim and Hindu religions, about the Persian Empire, about customs of caste, of worldviews, of architecture, and of the myriad flavors of a land too few of us understand. He continued this quality of writing in BESIDE A BURNING SEA, DRAGON HOUSE, THE WISHING TREES, CROSS CURRENTS, TEMPLE OF A THOUSAND FACES, UNBOUND, THE DEMON SEEKERS Trilogy, and now MY MIDNIGHT SUN. He lives in Boulder, CO.

In this new and very refreshing novel. John celebrates romance, that at times precarious arena where loss and past history find succor in new relationships. Prior to opening his story he informs us of his personal experiences of backpacking around Asia, most significantly for this novel, his trek through Himalayas and Nepal. Basing his descriptions on remembered facts, he opens the story in Thailand in 2004: ‘I heard the tsunami before I saw it – a rumbling, grinding roar that sounded like an old building being brought down by explosives. I hear the screams next – shrieks of terror, pain, and confusion, Turning on my side, I only had time to notice that Sarah was no longer wrapping the sarong about her waist. Instead, she had paused to look at me, her mouth open but still. A heartbeat later, the sea assaulted our bungalow…’ How this incident initiates the story suggests the immediacy of the emotional content.

The synopsis captures the path of the book: ‘Life is good for thirty-year-old Owen Sterling. But when tragedy strikes during his honeymoon in Thailand, the future he'd hoped for is shattered. After time with his family and friends in America does little to ease his pain, Owen returns to Asia to try to make peace with his past. A chance encounter unites him with Suchin, a young Thai woman battling her own demons. Inspired by their unexpected connection, the unlikely pair of traveling companions journeys to Nepal, soon embarking on an extraordinary trek through the Himalayas. Facing their own doubts, as well as everything from bandits to mudslides to illness, Owen and Suchin climb higher, their bond strengthening with each step. But the shadows of their pasts continue to loom large. And while both seek rebirth within a beautiful yet unforgiving land, neither knows if they will reach a legendary summit. The climb could break them--or save them.’ A blend of adventure, romance, and challenges.

Once again John Shors underlines his enviable position as a significant American author. Very highly recommended.

I like this authors books very much, and have all of them, with two left to read. minus “The Demon Seekers” series.
This was an excellent story of friendship, love lost and found , and a study of overcoming losses in life, whether physical or circumstantial.
We follow the story of Owen Sterling, and a young Thai woman Suchin, who have both lost something dear to them in their lives.
Owen Lost his Wife in Thailand when on their Honeymoon and Suchin, her family and health.
When the two meet in Bangkok they instantly feel a connection, and develop a friendship where they both try to help each other overcome their griefs and find a way to carry on despite their losses.
The two of them decide to go to Nepal and trek the Himalayas, they both seek a rebirth of kinds, always supporting each other as they embark on this very hard journey.
I love this story of understanding and support as each of these people seek a release from what has been holding them back in life.

John Shors has done it again. What a heartbreakingly beautiful story of love and loss and the resilience of the human spirit. It also inspired me to read more about the people of Thailand and Nepal and the treacherous treks through the Himalayas.

A story about life and death, and about how we handle it. After losing his wife in a tsunami, Owen is lost and heartbroken. That is until he meets Suchin, who is lost and fighting a battle of her own. As these two characters befriend each other, they help each other through their battles. It’s such a beautiful story that mixes in some spiritual beliefs on top of the romance. There are many things about love and death that we won’t be able to understand nor control so we need to accept that. Accept it and live in the moment while appreciating what was given to you and what you have right now. These two characters did a really good job of this.

I enjoyed this well-written poignant story detailing the physical and emotional journey of two people from diverse backgrounds, each seeking solace from the cruelties of fate. Owen and Suchin come together, each harboring personal grief, and climb from the sea to the sky in a journey that will teach them important lessons and restore the gift of love. The challenges of climbing to the top of Thorung La Pass in Nepal are vividly depicted, as are the village folk the two meet along the way. Uplifting read.

What a beautiful story of life and death by this self-published author. I don’t know why a publishing company didn’t jump on this book. The main characters, Owen and Suchin, are strong people, yet troubled by past circumstances they cannot change. On a trek in the Himalaya mountains, they find themselves and each other. They each learn to accept profound secrets of life along the Thorung La Pass in Tibet.

My Midnight Sun was on my Christmas Wish List at our local Indie bookstore, and I was thrilled on Christmas morning when I opened it. John Shors is the author of one of my favorite books, Beneath a Marble Sky. If you enjoy historical fiction set in Asia, I highly recommend it.

I read in Shors's Author's Note that he wrote this novel based on his adventures backpacking through Asia when he was in his early twenties. His agent was unsuccessful in getting it published; undaunted, he published ten other novels set in Asia during the interim. COVID lockdowns gave him the opportunity to dust-off his manuscript and rewrite the beginning. He decided to self-publish My Midnight Sun. I enjoyed this book so much that I can't believe it was rejected by multiple editors.

A big chunk of this book is about hiking, and that is a topic I know very little about. The two main characters Owen and Suchin set out on a quest to conquer the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal's Himalayan Mountains. The first time I read the book blurb, I thought that the book might not interest me because of my limited experiences hiking, but I knew I would love Owen and Suchin because Shors is one of the best at presenting well-drawn characters. I was very pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed reading about the hiking itself, every little detail from the medicines they had to pack to the beautiful descriptions of the landscape and trails.

The book starts out tragically as Owen loses his beautiful wife on their honeymoon in Thailand. His grief is consuming him, and a friend suggests that he return to Thailand to begin healing. That's where he meets Suchin, and she has suffered greatly, too. On a whim Owen invites her to accompany him to Nepal. I knew early in the story that there would be no happily ever after ending, yet their journey truly is magical and has a fairytale quality to it. This novel is a must read because it reminds us that suffering is no match for hope and peace: They heal brokenness.

‘If you quit, you waste gift of life.’

Thailand, 2004. Owen Sterling and his wife Sarah are on their honeymoon anticipating a bright future together when tragedy strikes. Sarah is swept away in a tsunami. Owen’s grief overwhelms him and freezes him. After a period back in the USA, he returns to Asia to try to make peace.

A chance encounter in Bangkok results in Owen meeting Suchin, a young Thai woman facing her own mortality. Suchin has a dream: she would like to see the mountains before she dies. Owen wants to make her dream a reality and buys them tickets to Nepal so they can climb into the Himalayas.

Can Suchin survive long enough to realise her dream? Can Owen face his own challenges?
I found this a bittersweet read. While I initially had trouble accepting that two strangers could undertake such a journey together, I was quickly swept up in the journey. I liked Suchin and hoped (against all the odds) that she would (somehow) recover. I wanted Owen to find his way. I wanted them both to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Life does not always work out the way we want it to. Sadly.

John Shors does it again

Every time I finish a Shors book I'm all, "wow, I can't believe how much I loved that." Maybe one day I'll stop being so surprised. This is Shors at his finest: the love, the adventure (mental and physical adventure), the realistic pain and redemption. The characters you embrace and bring deeply into your soul- hard to remember that they're fiction. So good. He's one of a few authors who can consistently make me love a genre/setting I'm usually not so interested in.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. The Midnight Sun was a beautiful and moving story about life and death. After Owen Sterling’s wife is killed in a tsunami while on their honeymoon in Thailand, he returns later to try to make sense of his life. While there, he meets a young, troubled Thai woman named Suchin. Together they travel to Nepal to climb the Himalayas hoping to find peace. Definitely enjoyed this reading this book.

I won this book from Goodreads and was so thankful that I did. It is a truly moving and powerful story. It takes you with the characters on their trip. Great descritions of the mountains. The people that they meet are vividly described. Even when people do not speak the same language, it is remarkable how easily they seem to communicate.

Definitely worth the read.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. Normally I love the books John writes. The story line was a bit hard to believe, and some of the characters were not as developed as I was hoping for.

All in all, an easy book to read, but not one that I would reread or recommend to a friend.

I loved this book! At the beginning the author tells of editors rejecting this book and wonders if they were right. They were- a story this personal needs to be self published.

I have only one question- how soon can I get a ticket to Nepal?

Interesting account of a young man who lost his bride, Sarah, to a tsunami and returns to Thailand to try to heal. He meets a young Thai girl who lives on the streets and is dying. Together they go on a very difficult trek in the Himalayans to satisfy the girl's dreams.
