Only months ago, nineteen-year-old Lydia Brone and her friends were captured by one of Kormace Island’s most ruthless clans—the Northers—and forced into a life of slavery.

Every day since, they have been abused, threatened, and beaten. Still, Brone refuses to bow to Rainer, leader of the Northers.

Primal Instincts, the enthralling third book of The Feral Sentence serial, continues where the second book ended—on the dawn of an uprising.

Now, a revolution begins.

This is a serialized novel. The author states (in the first installment) that each part will less than 25,000 words (about 80 pages), they will have cliffhangers (which you will find as either frustrating or awesome), there will be swearing, violence, and LGBT (the L bit). She goes on to say if these bother you, it would probably be better to look elsewhere for your reading pleasure. She felt this was the best format to tell this particular story.

I was able to snag the first 4 installments for free. I discovered (after downloading them) that the first installment actually includes part 2 as well. I am going to review each installment separately.

In this first installment, a young girl is dropped to the prison island (actually in the ocean sort of near the island). A group of savage looking women find her and take her to the village. She finds out the island has at least two groups of prisoners (all women) and that they are basically fighting with each other. There is a third , smaller (possibly mythical) group made up of women that have turned truly savage. Through the sole fact that she has 20/20 vision, she is picked to become an archer with the hunters.

This first episode is almost completely set up. One or two things will be fairly obvious to the reader that the main character that seems to elude the main character. So far, she is still in denial mode. The episode isn't bad but is still too early to really say how you will like the whole story.

can’t stop reading!!

Love all the characters-even the *bad* ones are good at being bad! Crazy thing is-i could see people being just like these characters are-and they wouldn’t even have to be incarcerated first. Think any population would end up being just like this if put in this situation-so interesting!!

The Feral Sentence Serie is truly a MUST-READ for anyone who loves really fantastic dystopian adventures. But this isn’t a light and fluffy read- be warned! This is gritty, raw, violent, emotive, and a ‘hang on to your seat’ and brace yourselves because this is going to get INTENSE. There are potential triggers contain throughout the series such as violence, murder, abuse/domestic abuse, manipulation, and more. So keep that in mind if you are sensitive to any of these subjects.
I stumbled on this series purely by accident, and I am soooo glad that I did because I was so hooked on the story within the first few pages that I practically inhaled the entire series in only a couple of sittings. It is entirely addictive- the characters, the ‘world’, the story makes for completely riveting reading.
Shade Owens world building skills are sheer perfection. I was transported into the story, struggling to survive right alongside Lydia and the rest of the cast. Ms. Owens writing is immersive, captivating, vividly exciting, and entirely addictive. I am hooked and will happily devour anything she ever produces, because WOW.
This is a heart-stopping, action-packed, intense, dystopian thriller- with adventure, danger, violence, a fight for survival, friendship, battles, dramatic developments, savagery, fantasy, a remote island prison, jungle, no escape, politics, corruption, brutality, futuristic sci-fi, factions, war, games of cat and mouse/mind games, challenges, risk, betrayal, and SO, SO, SO MUCH MORE.
The Feral Sentence introduces (and follows) eighteen-year-old Lydia Brone who has been sentenced to Kormace Island- a penal colony for the worst of the worst inmates and is known as the Island of Killers. She is transported to the island after killing her mother’s violent boyfriend accidently while trying protect her mother- but the helicopter doesn’t ever ‘land’ on the island, instead Lydia is thrown from the airborne helicopter into the ocean, where she has to swim to the ‘safety’ of land. But this is only the start of her survival adventure, as just because she finally reaches land, doesn’t mean she’s ever really ‘safe’- at all. And so, the intensity and adventure begins.
Lydia, and the rest of the cast of characters are so well-developed with their own unique individual personalities, quirks, and flaws. Shade Owens has a bold, dynamic, and very vivid writing style that easily brings her story to life- it was like watching a movie play out before my eyes, The descriptions are quite detailed and vivid- painting a powerful picture of Lydia, the island environment, and the quest for daily survival. Right down to the living conditions, camp, ‘native’ clothing, tools, food, jungle, animals, hunting, scouting, battle scenes, intensity, suspense, the ’feral’ vibes, and every other engrossing detail. Just brilliant!
The series contains:
-The Feral Sentence: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence Book #1)
-Beasts of Prey: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence #2)
-Primal Instincts: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence Book #3)
-Reign of Blood (The Feral Sentence #4)
-Game of Death (The Feral Sentence #5)

This would definitely make a fantastic movie or television series!
Highly Recommended Reading!!!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Shade Owens!

So far I do enjoy the idea behind these books. Super interesting to think of a society of female convicts just dumped onto an island. But the writing is lacking. The author repeats things we already know, and the narrator’s inner dialogue is also very repetitive. But I’ll keep reading because the plot has totally sucked me in!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Even though each book is longer than the last, the writing style and the pacing make the books in this series easy to read.

The characters are very well written. I didn't like how some of the women turned on Brone simply because she had changed, which is to be expected after surviving the abuse from the Beasts/Northers and managing to free a lot of other women from being slaves. I think this was part of the plot for a reason though and it was done well.

I like how there are reminders every so often that every single one of these characters have killed someone, because it is so easy to become engrossed in the plot and focus on how they act now, that I sometimes forgot the reason they were all sent to the island in the first place.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster, and I spent every second rooting for Brone's women. I'll definitely be reading the next book.

Can't put this book down

Your in for a ride, when Brone is sentenced to 3 years for a accidental murder, on a jungle island, full of dangerous animals, and woman out to kill you, who have formed their own societies on this island. Brone hasn't even had a chance to catch her breath when she chosen to be a archer/fighter in their battle to stay alive. I can't wait to read more, I'm hooked!

There is some mystery in this series as to the question of what is going to happen to this person, that person and why. What will they do next. You may find one person that you follow through the books and want her to succeed. I felt fully invested in several women and I cheered their success and mourned their losses. I loved reading each one of the books in this series.

Amazing

A really good book, I can’t wait to hear the rest of the story. Sometimes I think our government are too soft on certain crimes, what if these books were the future for serious crimes, wow

Terrific series starter

Liked the "women's only" penal colony on an island concept. Looking forward to the next chapter for even more adventure.

I don't like the way Brone keeps talking to herself, but I understand it's a good way to promote her PTSD and rage.
