Art of Magic

Rate this book
A story where a touch of love and a slice of life creates a whole lot of magic.

Cath Monroe loves her teaching job, her friends, her family, and her colleagues. They fill her life and her heart. She knows that it’s important to share love with actions and words, but that last one? About the words? That’s a problem. Because when it comes to saying ‘I love you’ to her forever person, Cath discovers that she doesn’t really know anything about love at all.

Then, Rica Diamandis strolls into her life. Rica is perfect, sexy, made of stardust and magic, and Cath is intrigued. The sudden availability of a blank canvas, primed for love's artistic brushstrokes, takes Cath’s breath away. But when her father is taken to hospital with a life-threatening disease, Cath boxes up the romance with Rica, and packs it into the back of her heart. Fortunately, the universe has other ideas and Cath begins to realise that embracing emotional chaos is actually the art that creates the magic.

From the world of 'Coming Home', but does stand alone.

Best-selling author KJ lives in Bendigo, Australia with her wife, their son, three cats and a dog. She started writing interesting observations of life, literary articles, poetry, creative non-fiction, and personal essays, and eventually they were all sort of smooshed together in a giant author-y blender and out popped a book. Then another. The blender is currently in use for KJ’s next novel. Her books are best-sellers, with all either finalists or winners in the Goldie Awards, IHeartSapphic, eLit Awards and LesFic Bard awards. KJ also writes novels under her other pen name: K.J. Wrights

4.5* – KJ uses the word “lovely” a lot, not just in her books, and it’s very appropriate since that’s what her novels are. Her writing is alive and it clearly speaks to my emotions, as my mind feels very full when I read her. To the point that there’s so much noise, I sometimes need to take breaks to let it breathe (do minds breathe?). It may not sound like it, but it’s a good thing.

Cath Monroe (Sam’s best friend from Coming Home) meets Rica Diamandis (remember Tal from Kick Back? Rica is their sister) at a teacher convention. They hit it off, have a drink together, flirt a little then part ways without exchanging phone numbers. Shortly after, Rica is introduced as the new Art teacher at the school where Cath teaches. They decide to put the flirting aside, without much success. At about the same time, Cath’s father is hospitalized with a possible brain tumour. Cath, who is very used to controlling her emotions, finds herself unable to keep them at bay when her heart insists on opening on all sides. Life gets messy and she doesn’t do messy.

I loved Sam because she’s the sweetest character ever while still being realistic. Cath is very different yet their being best friends makes total sense, as she is as kind and loyal as Sam. Cath is sensual and flirty and very much at ease with her body and her sexuality – she’s bisexual – and probably comes across as laidback to those who only know her on the surface. She’s passionate about her work and the people she loves yet closed off to the unknown. The feelings Rica brings out are very much unexpected and not completely welcome at first. Things get even more challenging when Cath finds out who Rica really is and what she triggers in her.

Art of Magic is KJ’s first attempt at first person. I remember reading on social media that she had first written this in third but Cath told her to change to first. In the beginning, it’s a bit wonky and you can still feel the third, but it doesn’t last more than a few pages. Another first, if I’m not mistaken (crappy memory and all), is how sexy this latest novel is from the start. I mean, like, really sexy. Hot.

In addition, KJ ventures into magical realism territory, which is both surprising since neither of her previous books even hints at it, as far as I remember, and not because it’s right there in the title (I’m borderline facepalming right now).

There’s something magical when you meet the right person for you, when the chemistry is so strong you can feel it when you touch, even in the most innocent touch. When you feel the energy flowing from their skin into yours. I was trying to explain this to friends the other day, how I hate to be touched (sensory stuff) except when it’s my wife doing the touching. When she touches me (and I’m not talking about sex, or not just sex), it’s like my skin relaxes into hers, the contact feeds my body and my heart and my soul. There’s undeniable magic there. In this book, KJ takes that magic to the next level.

As much as I have enjoyed what I’ve read by her so far, her books and the reviews she posts on Facebook and on the Les Rêveur website, I didn’t know if she could pull it off or if it would feel weird, but she absolutely did. There’s a measure of weirdness but she embraces it through Cath’s reactions to Rica’s “power” and what comes next, and something really beautiful comes out of it all.

There’s also (and that was really unexpected) one of the hottest fully-clothed scenes I’ve read in a while.

Discovering Cath’s story made me want to re-read Sam’s, and in the best timing ever, Coming Home was recently released in audiobook, with a brand new Australian narrator I can’t wait to hear.

This story takes place in the world of KJ's previous book 'Coming Home.' That was about a charming teacher, Sam, falling for an American actress, Abby, and her daughter, Grace. It made my end of 2019 list as the surprise hit of the year. So I was really excited to learn that this was a sort-of follow up to that. In this one, we get a front row seat to the life of Sam's best friend, Cath.

Cath is a fun character. There was a scene early on that was described so well that it appeared to me as if it were a movie. She was driving in her car, expertly balancing a coffee in hand, and maneuvering though speed bumps to find a space in the school parking lot. Then she exits and sways her hips toward the buildings like she owns the place.

I didn't look at the blurb before I started reading this. I did read it after, and I don't think it really expresses the main aspect (theme?) of this book. I understand the ambiguity as it would spoil things. But I have to say that I was surprised at the direction this took and I'm not entirely certain that it was for me.

The story was written well and I liked the characters. It was great to see Sam and Abby again and there was even some relationship progression for those two. The book had a good balance of Cath transitioning out of her serial dating past, re-establishing a relationship with her parents, maintaining a meaningful friendship with her best friend, and navigating a controversial work place romance.

I'm just more into realism than this story afforded. It was a bit fantastical. I'm sure most people will absolutely adore 'The Art of Magic.' It has everything you could possibly want. Instant chemistry. Hesitation to be vulnerable. Denying feelings. An 'Invisible Thread' (As Taylor Swift would put it). Or perhaps really visible threads in this case. It was just a little too out there for me, personally.

Overall, I enjoyed this. It was mostly fluffy. There was some conflict, but not really any super angst.

I recommend this to people who love to read about romance, education, English teachers, Art teachers, dealing with sick parents, empathic people, and rotary phones.

I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Magical deep connections and a bit of school drama for the teachers at Rawson Grammar. Kindle Unlimited.

I've read Coming Home, and yesterday read Ignis so I decided I wanted to continue in this wonderful world, and follow up with Cath and Rica in this installment. Rica is Tal Diamades sister.

We find out a lot about Rica and her exception artistic skills and how she is a well beloved teacher. Newly hired at Rawson Grammar. Cath is immediately drawn to the stunning woman, and together they have a cosmic connection, that is difficult to explain.

We find out some more metaphysical and 'magical' explanations, that at first felt a little out of left field, but soon have you embracing them.

It's great to catch up with Abigail and Sam from Coming Home, and Principal Felicity Davis and Inspector Tal. They are just a set of unique and lovable characters, that are real, flawed, yet take ownership and step up for their loved ones.

These are all feel good books, with realistic angst and beautiful loving stories of connection and empathy.

Nicely done. I'm a big Sam fan from Coming Home so it was nice to see her best friend Cath get her own love story. Rica is the new art teacher at Cath's school. She and Cath hit it off following a quick exchange at a conference before discovering they would be working at the same school. Rica is tall, dark and handsome and has some amazing skills. I enjoyed the whole magic realism angle of the book. Seeing love in all it's colourful beauty was a sweet and clever concept. I also enjoyed the relationship conflict coming from a third party and not the mains. That was refreshing.

I was blown away by my first read of a KJ book - Coming Home - and was anxious for his follow-up once I'd had a taste. When you discover a new author and the work is so damn good, you always hope that the next experience will be similar and not just a fluke. I am happy to say it was no coincidence - this writer is the real deal and Art of Magic is just amazing.
This story utilizes art, color, a touch of magic and beautiful imagery to weave together a romance for the ages. I can honestly say there isn't another love story out there like it. It's not something that can be described in much detail without giving something important away, it just needs to be experienced. KJ excels at character building, thinks outside the box and has a gift for utilizing beautiful language to paint a picture in your mind and explain the unexplainable.
This is Cath Monroe's story - Sam's best friend and teaching buddy from Coming Home. She is a woman who fiercely guards her heart - never being able to completely give all of herself to someone. But when the stunning and gifted Rica Diamandis enters her universe, there is so much about her that makes Cath believe it may indeed be possible. This is a stand-alone novel, but it would be better to read Coming Home first to know a little something about Cath. This is one of those more than five stars books that spoils a reader and makes you want more like this than the oft-regurgitated formulaic stuff. An incredibly satisfying read!

Wonderful read with plenty of feelings. Witty dialogues and banters which was a joy to read (and some which stayed with me).... Cath came across as a really confident person who has no qualms with her sexuality and her sexual appetite. Cath + Rica = Magical; throw in good supportive secondary characters, makes Art of Magic, a wonderful, feel good read.

4.5 ⭐️ for the story and the Colourful cover had me round up the ratings to 5

Art of Magic by KJ is a beautiful, magical love story. It is a wonderfully romantic tale of two young women who meet as teachers in the same school Catherine Monroe (Cath) teaches in the English Department and Rica Diamandis teaches art. There is a connection between the two from the moment they meet, but Cath keeps her heart and her emotions well protected, at least until she gets to know Rica. There seems to be a magic about Rica that cuts right through all those protective layers around Cath’s heart. But will it be enough when the world throws all kinds of road blocks in their way?

This is pure romance with a touch of real magic thrown into the mix. It is a story about the need for trust between those we love, whether that love is between friends, family, or lovers. This theme runs all through the tale. It is a lesson that Cath struggles with in the book, but must learn if she is to have her happy ending.

The book is written in first person POV through the eyes of Cath. Since Cath is the character who must learn to trust her heart and her feelings, this is the perfect POV for this story. I connected with the main characters immediately. All of the characters are well developed. Many of the secondary characters are also in other books by KJ so they were already developed from those novels. The pacing of the book is solid and the story is easy to read. It really is a lovely tale.
If you like your romances with lots of love and a bit of magic, this is the perfect book for you. You can find the book here.
Thanks to the author for allowing me to read this novel for an honest review.

Beyond interesting

We all believe in something. I feel, this book is showing how to believe in yourself and others. How to be the good person which will attract possitive vibes in your life. Shows that good can make things happen and being sensitive is not bad attribute at all. Loved this one, that's for sure.

Magical!

Cath is dreaming of finding true love with someone special, just as her friends have. When new teacher Rica turns up, she is intrigued by her new captivating colleague. Rica is perfect and has Cath’s attention immediately but suddenly isn’t her only focus when family issues strike. Rica and Cath strike up quite the friendship based on their attraction to one another and when Cath learns just how amazing Rica is and together they embark on quite the magical discovery of their feelings, attraction, and love for one another.

Such a beautiful and magical story. KJ has brought an element of surprise and something unique to this particular romance. The story was heart-warming and heart-breaking all at the same time, especially for Cath and she really experienced so much. We really got good insight into all Cath was thinking and feeling, especially once her relationship with Rica really started developing and their magical connection.

The chemistry between Rica and Cath was amazing. They just had this connection that you could really understand and get swept away by as you are reading. Rica is so intriguing and it is not until you really learn about her that you can understand and appreciate why Cath is so in love with her. Rica’s character was truly unique and added in making this a great romance. They are brilliant together, embodying support and understanding because Rica’s past rears its head causing some added drama to the whole story.

The imagery was lovely and it was great that this story was in the same universe as KJ’s other stories and I adored how well it fitted in and makes a great addition to her works. It was something a bit different with good underlying issues being tackled whilst keeping the story magical but realistic. I really enjoyed it and hope to see more from Cath and Rica in future.

Holy hell. I have too many words to say about Art of Magic and all of them are fighting for attention.
I have annotated the crap out of this book, I have scrawled in the margins, spat coffee over pages as I couldn’t hold back the giggles and know 100% Cath is my spirit animal ... ok maybe not 100% ... but 98 ... 95%? Look, all I’m saying is I feel incredibly seen and maybe a little stalked (but not really).
This book is amazing, the writing, the humour, the characters, the world is all beautiful ... and then boom ... throw in magic realism and I’m all aquiver.
I loved this book and it will become tattered beyond its now desecrated state from rereading.

Magic can come in many forms but when the HEART is involved it is colorful Art.

Cath just catches your attention from the moment she meets Rica. The very tangible feeling these two seem lusting after got short circuited. The characters are destined to meet as Rica show up at the school Cath teaches at as the new Art teacher. The twists that include real family drama for Cath and rumors and innuendo surrounding Rica are all part of the magical tension they feel. It is beautiful how they connect and depth of their hearts opens up a pure magic that heals. The characters from KJs other book was just so special. I cried every time these beautiful woman opened up to each other making their magic so colorful. Belinda was the one soul who just could not stop her wounded heart from the poison mistrust spreads still finds love from this magical group. What a special story and the heart swells at the real gift the Art of Magic may be something very real! Such a good story.

I really loved this book and I totally bought into the story. The description of Cath and Rica together was magical, you could feel the love, the colours and the connection, brilliant.
On a side note, I also enjoyed catching up with the life of Sam, Abby and Grace and the cameo by Sophia from Provender.
Maybe one day we will get to read Felicity and Tal story.

I felt discombobulated reading this...

Disclaimer: I am not usually a fan of first-person pov when I read, and I can't say I'm a fan after this. I find it hard to disconnect from characters and when they're lost, I'm lost. God forbid I have to read the first-person pov of a villain or mentally unstable person. So, yeah... let's begin.

The synopsis didn't quite catch my attention at first and only grazes a tiny bit of all that actually happens. Cath is a good person, and can't seem to find the connection she's been seeking through her quick flings. She is very sexually conscious. Her father becomes ill, and she must deal with what the realities of possibly losing unconditional love looks like. In walks Rica, who is effortlessly charismatic and genuine. She doesn't shy away from Cath's blunt honesty and instead sees it as a point of attraction. She has her secrets, and though she holds them close, Cath is walking through her barriers as if they never existed.

It was a bit jarring for there to be little to no warning when Cath changed settings. One moment she'd be in her apartment, and the next paragraph she was somewhere completely different, abruptly veering into each other. Conversation was cut-off without a unanimous or conclusive end before the scenery shifted and I found it difficult to find my footing. You know those wheels people spin to win a prize? Well, I felt like the wheel.

I could have used more breaks in paragraphs in general because without them my mind took a page full of text and made it feel tedious (also keeping in mind it may have just formatted that way once downloaded). Her inner thoughts were amusing though, and I appreciated all the humor even when Cath was panicking.

The story was warm, and a little bit cheesy.

Strangely, I read a book about less than 24 hours before I opened this one so it, in some ways, felt like continued learning. I loved the magical take on the subject and all the ways their love was demonstrated.

I admit I thought everyone in here was beyond quirky at first, but I grew comfortable with all the intense personalities.

If you're looking for magic, unconventional characters, and a love story to make you believe in soulmates, then give this novel a try.

Absolutely Wonderful!

I am a big fan of K J and was so looking forward to her new book. The characters of Cath and Rica make your heart swoon. The instant connection when they first meet in a bar and then later on when the are reintroduced as teachers in school is off the charts.Their attraction resumes where they left off and soon the flirting begins. Cath having trust issues, cools the relationship to friends status and neither is dealing very well with that. Cath is also reeling from her fathers surgery from a brain tumor and the follow ups needed. We are reacquainted with Grace, Sam and Abby from “Coming Home” also where we first met Cath. From a new love, Brain Cancer and now school gossip which is getting out of hand. Cath is having extreme difficulty. Knowing she has taken family and her friends for granted she tries to correct it. Those words that we all want to hear “I Love You “has always been rough, having now said it to her Sam, Mom and her Dad she is struggling to say it to Rica. Now here is where the very deep connection that Cath and Rica feel comes to a head. The main part of this story being an empathetic transferrer. Since I do understand emotional transference this turned out to be a completely different and wonderful story for me. When Cath learns of Rica’s gift and finally learns to put her trust in her, she feels the love so deep in her heart and when she connects with Rica, they connect together as one. It can only be read to truly understand what a wow moment this is. For me as a reader, the words used to describe the feelings they both were going through, gave me absolute chills. I believe this is how we all envision love to be. Captivated with this story and the people in it once again has reminded me what a fantastic writer K J is. I feel more books can be entwined with these characters. But mostly, I just can’t wait for K J next book.

Another great hit by KJ, this is a wonderful and engaging page-turner story about creating your own kind of magic through love. This book comes from the world of 'Coming Home', but does stand alone

What was the book about?
Cath Monroe, an English teacher, who loves her job, her family and friends. But what about that one love that curls your toes and makes your heart misses a beat? She just can’t give herself to someone that way, that kind of love she just can’t let get in. When the new art teacher of the school Rica Diamandis storms into her life, all smart, sexy and a mystery. To say she’s intrigued is an understatement; she just can’t help but wonder if everything she believed about her forever person was right. Will she embrace her new feelings and give love a chance or will she stay away?

I already liked Cath a lot from Coming Home so I was excited that this story was about her and as a bonus we got to see Abby, Sam and Grace again.
And I have to say KJ did it again. She created another beautiful story with the perfect title. This story really is magical. I already was in love before with her writing style and fell in love with it even more. She just knows how to use her words in such a beautiful way and definitely knows how to write a beautiful love scene. I‘m really in awe about her talent. I won’t give anything away about what happens in the book. But if you wanna read a beautiful book that makes you smile and tingle inside I highly recommend it. Because in the end in a world like this we can’t get enough magic in our lives.

I received an advanced reader copy from the author & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.

Love this book!

This is my second reading of this wonderful book. You must read Sam and Abby's story first to get the full wonderfulness of this book! I have read that one three times now! I don't want to give away any spoilers here but this book's storyline is so original and is just fantastic. Lots of love, magic, friendship and plenty of steamy so buy it and enjoy!!!😁
