His dream of being a successful lawyer is definitely attainable now that he has been accepted into the very prestigious Yale University. But life for Ryan Thomas is far from perfect with his controlling mother Betty on his back. Ryan loves his mother. He only wants her to give him his right to make his own decisions--something she's always had trouble with. She hates his girlfriend Dawn with a passion. And surprisingly, his grandmother does too. They call Dawn "the devil", not because she's a bad person. It's because she's white. Betty offers Ryan an ultimatum. He is distraught! How could he choose between his mother and grandmother, both of whom he loves deeply, and his girlfriend whom he wants to marry . . . a woman he has fallen deeply in love with? This ultimatum fills him with deep despair. His complete disbelief of how his mother and grandmother are in opposition of whom he loves forces a wedge between them and drives him to search for family that he hadn't seen since he was a little boy. He even comes face to face with his father . . . for the very first time. That's when secrets start to surface and skeletons begin jumping out of the closet.
