Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.

Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.

She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.

Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the
rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.

She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.

She adores hearing from readers, so don’t hesitate to say hello or sign up for her newsletter:
http://tesswrites.com/. You’ll receive an ebook copy of her novella, The Santa Trial, for your
efforts.

Much to her father’s horror, you can find her everywhere on social media.

3.5 - The featured heroine, Mary, was a nasty piece of work for a good part of this book. She really aggravated the crap out of me. Yes, she experienced traumatic, life altering and will never be the same losses, but she pretty much made everyone around her pay for it with her behavior and nastiness. This character was in serious need of some heavy duty therapy. Yes, the author surrounded her with love and acceptance radiating from the other main characters (who are wonderful, by the way), but it seemed to drag on forever. Lance was a saint with her.

At the end of the book, it appeared that this was going to be the finale for our main characters. I was happy to see that she was continuing with a new phase of characters in the little, unique world of Cliffside Bay. Despite Mary's book (geez), I'm happily continuing the series. ;)

Thank you to the author and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of this book ! Lance & Mary's story ! Book 5 of the fabulous Cliffside Bay Series ! I have been anxiously awaiting this book because Lance & Mary are my 2 favorite characters ! I knew there just had to be so much unknown about these two and that this could really be something special ! And it was ! Exceeded all my expectations ! "Nice" Lance and "Sad" Mary..... could Lance finally be seen as something other than a friend, and could Mary see past her grief and realize she wasn't really living and missing out on so much ? This books wraps up these particular characters and it is done exceptionally. Any and all questions are answered in this book ! There is a lot of emotion in this book, funny moments, sweet moments, sad moments and a very unexpected shocking moment ! You must read this book ! This is Tess Thompson at her best !

Following in the tradition of the Cliffside Bay series, this book focuses on Lance and Mary. Lance is one of The Dogs - a group of friends forged from childhood friendships and college friendships. Mary was introduced in an earlier book. She runs the local bookstore/coffee shop. Lance is the "nice guy". What kind of a relationship can they establish? Can they move past what has happened in the past?
The story has twists and turns, sad and happy moments, misunderstandings and reconciliations. Lance and Mary came to life for me with this book. Mary had an unhappy marriage, lost her baby and mother within a very short time, and recently her father remarried, leaving her feeling adrift. Lance, who returned to Cliffside Bay after leaving a lucrative career in New York after having an affair with the boss's daughter, has not been having much luck with his relationships with women.

Another wonderfully told story from author Tess Thompson. While it is number 5 of the Cliffside Bay series, and there are coincidentally five Dogs, it appears that the author is setting the stage for a spin-off series.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to have an ARC.

This is the 5th book in one of the best series I have ever read. The books are all so good and keep you wanting more throughout.

In this one you get to know Lance and Mary.

Mary is so messed up from previous life events. She started out on the wrong foot with the Dogs and the Wags but for a pretty good reason. Her fear of loss is so great. She lost her baby and her cheating low life husband and that left her with many insecurities.. Her mother passed away not long after Mary lost her baby so that didn’t help with her security issues.

Lance has a few issues of his own. He was in love with a woman and lost his job over her. But he is crazy about Mary and will do everything he can to prove to her that his love is forever. He’s a very romantic type of guy and is very smart in making money for himself and others.

Of course the others are also a big part of this book. Babies are born and there is much love and heartache in this book. I would laugh in parts and ugly cry in others. This is one wonderful book. The series just gets better and better. I can’t wait for the next and I have no doubt there will be another.

This is another big huge beautiful 5 star book. Thank you to Tess Thompson for an ARC of this in exchange for my honest unbiased review.

I voluntarily accepted this book in return for an honest review.

Lance is upset. All the other Dogs are now married, happy, and starting families, and he is alone and hopelessly in love with a woman that's not available. He should know the problems with that; it had happened before and the reason he came home in the first place. But Mary, damaged, sweet Mary is what he wants. Mary is new to Cliffside Bay, following her father there. She is damaged beyond repair, being cheated on and losing a child will do that to you. Now she has books to hide her grief. Will, one night between them, change them both, and give them a future, or will they stay apart?

Let me start by saying I gave this a 5, but it is more of a 10 or even 20. I have fallen in love with his series. Up to this point, we haven't seen much of Lance and Mary. But this book brings them both to light. This book was crazy on my emotions. At times, I found myself mad, at others I was crying ugly tears, and at others, I was deliriously happy. This book was, in my opinion, the best of the series. From the love and drama between Lance and Mary to all the drama and issues that surfaced during this book (sorry, no spoilers from me), I was hooked. I loved it.

I just happened across Tess on Facebook, and now she is definitely on my favorite author list. Her writing is amazing. This is the first series I have had the pleasure to read, but I want to read all her works. This story, this series in general, has been one of the best things I have ever read. I'm a reviewer, so I have read many books, so coming from me, this was amazing.

It is the end of an era! I am so sad, but so happy that Lance and Mary got their HEA. All the Dogs have found there WAG. Though don't despair, it seems like Tess is setting up a new series or a continuation of this one. So even if the Dogs arent the main focus, I have a feeling we will see bits of them in future books. We have to know how it goes with all the babies!
This could technically be a stand alone, you are given all the back information. But I highly recommend starting this series from the beginning. I am about to start a reread I loved it so much! Lance and Mary have been put through the wringer and the feels definitely come out, and not just with them but with some of the past couples too. Loved this book!

WOW!

Completely captivating and absolutely mesmerizing!!

Tess Thompson has such a way with words. She doesn’t just write a story for you... she makes you FEEL the whole story. I got goosebumps as my heart dropped one second and then goosebumps again as my heart completely soared the next.

You are in for a wild roller coaster ride of emotions. Tess Thompson gives you ALL the feels!

An AMAZING story added to an AMAZING series! These characters feel like family to me and I am ridiculously attached to them. I honestly love them so much.

This is without a doubt, AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!!!

This series is filled with so much heart. Each story has touched my soul. Especially this one. Definitely a favorite read of all time!

Whoa! What a wild ride! I thoroughly enjoyed Tainted by Tess Thompson. Set in Cliffside Bay in northern California, the town and characters draw you in to their small town. You feel like you have come home when you open the pages of Tainted. This is the fifth book in the series and I have enjoyed them all. The Dogs are wonderful, their wives are all best friends, and there are babies everywhere! Not sure about who the Dogs are? I suggest you enjoy this series from the beginning so that you, too, can find yourself searching Google Maps to find and visit this unique “one stoplight” town. Cliffside Bay, a community of people who know that family and friendship matter more than who you are or what you do for a living. Five sparkly stars for Tainted!

Cliffside Bay is the place to go when nursing a broken heart, looking for a fresh start or building friendships that last a lifetime. Tess Thompson has quickly become a favorite author of mine. She's not afraid to tell it like it is. Tainted brings hope from tragedy and finds inspiration through despair. Mary and Lance teach a valuable lesson. Life is not dwelling on how many times we get knocked down, but having the courage to get back up and try again. The rain is just a stepping stone to point us in the right direction. Heartbreak is the beginning of something wonderful.

DNF at 10%

H seems to be like a sappy, all-round good guy but just a little too much so. Spoilers ahead *** h tricks the H (who loves her) into knocking her up because she is jealous of all their friends (his friends, no-one seems to like her) being pregnant. Yes, she had a late-term miscarriage at 22 weeks 6 years previously but that doesn't fully explain her ice-bi**h demeaner.

Couldn't take much more of him bemouning how much he loves her and her bemouning how horrible a person she is.

I am in love with Tess Thompson’s most recent novel, “Tainted: Lance and Mary”, which is the which is the fifth book in the Cliffside Bay series. The lives of all characters in the past four books are intertwined in this book. New friendships are formed, inner heartaches are shared, unexpected news is discovered; it just doesn’t get any better. Each book that Tess Thompson writes is unbelievably better than the ones before. I am in awe. She has a true gift of writing and I thank her for sharing it with all of us!

Tainted is the 5th book in the Cliffside Bay series by Tess Thompson. Even though this book is part of a series, it reads as a standalone. This book is the story of Lance and Mary. Their story is full of friendships, love, loss, fear and courage. Tess knows how to make the reader feel as they are part of this wonderful town. I care about every character and their story. Thank you Tess Thompson and the publisher for an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

Coming to Cliffside Bay was out of fear of losing the only person she ad left. But in her haste and fear she made enemies of the people she would come to need the most.
This is a very funny, complicated, and yet, touching story. Of a young idealistic woman who wanted the storybook wedding, white picket fence, and the two-point two children. Oh yeah, the husband to go along with that. This is where the story might go south. Picking the right husband. Fairytale ends.
Not only was she so young and did she have blinders on when picking a good solid husband with eyes only for her. You see when she is pregnant with her daughter, then in mourning the deaths for not only her daughter but then her mother too, said husband, is and has been for months, carrying on an affair with the local barista. He tried to blame her saying she is always depressed. But she knew the text she finds that he had started the affair before she finds out she is even pregnant.
So, when she meets Lance, he ends up being the type of man she’s always wanted. Intellectual, well rounded, funny, he understands her and her losses, and even though he should be on the side of his family and friends he was on her side. He even hired her to be the manager of his new bookstore. Her being a librarian made her the perfect fit. Lance knew a great business deal when he saw it.
He may have left New York in disgrace because of a relationship gone bad it wasn’t because of a bad stock option. He knew what he knew. Mary was a good investment for his business and for his hearo figure. He planned to figure out how to get her to see him. New Year’s Eve they both see each other thinking a one and done or at least she was.
When it changes everything yet nothing it leaves them with more questions than not. How do they maneuver being best friends after pleasing each other on this one night better than ever in their lives? Can it just be, back to business, only? Mary is so afraid to give her heart to another man believing all men are cheaters. Lance, on the other hand, wants to spoil Mary beyond belief and be her forever man.
This is a very good book. If you have lost a child at all along your path miscarriage or older this book will touch you and it can be a healing journey for you along the way with the ladies of the group. Tess uses the path of her character in life to help heal.
We see how they use their anger, pain, fear, humor, and sexuality to get through things. It is, in the end, the friendships that get them through. Whether it be between the couples themselves or the Dogs as they call themselves (hubbies) or the Wags (wives) all coming together to work as a unit. Bonding together to help each other use that strength to heal, love, or celebrate each other. I didn't feel like I missed anything coming in at story five.
If I could give it more than five stars I would. I give this: 5++++ stars. Free Amazon. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com.

To turn the very last page to this last book in the series was so very bittersweet. I have loved the journey Tess Thompson took me on with the Dogs and Wags through these books. Tainted took me with Lance and Mary on a very emotional and gut wrenching read.
"Tainted" Mary....who feels she is unworthy, doesn't trust men, isn't good enough, and suffered a great loss she's struggling to overcome.
Lance....good, compassionate, empathetic, "warm vanilla toast", destined to be alone all his life because of the "Lance Syndrome".

How would these two overcome their own created barriers to connect with each other? This is the magic of this book. The journey is difficult but true love can find a way to overcome.
There was a part of this book that had my heart torn out and left it broken to pieces. It was so emotionally well written that I was sobbing. I felt the pain and anquish. Tess Thompson took that and with her gift of bringing pieces together she gave me hope in words that can apply to my life, too. "God shows up in other people. He sends the right person to you when you most need them. Even if you didn't know you did." This is so true in each and every book of the Cliffside Bay series. The characters are loyal and devoted to each other no matter what.
There is so much emotion in this book...it goes from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs and you truly experience every feeling there is. That is a great talent of an amazing writer. Tess Thompson is totally gifted in accomplishing this.
This final book is a wonderful wrap up of the stories of the "Dogs and Wags." There were answers to questions left unanswered in previous books. i.e The "missing keys" and more. These characters became a family that I loved and wanted to spend time with. OH! And Freckles is a wonderful added bonus to the family! I love him! I'm very grateful that I had that opportunity. As hard as it is to think that this is the last book, I do believe Ms. Thompson will carry on their stories in future works she is creating. I feel honored that I got to experience the journey. One of the last passages of the book was this:
"Do you ever wonder what to do after everything you ever dreamed of came true?" Brody asked. "It's a new era, but the Dogs will always be the Dogs," Brody said. "We'll always have one another."
I want to thank Tess Thompson for the privilege of reading this much anticipated ARC copy of her amazing book! My review can't begin to give it the praises it truly deserves. I would give it more than five stars if I could but I do give it the highest "Dogs and Wags" stars from my heart!

BOOK REVIEW:

Tainted: Lance and Mary by Tess Thompson
Cliffside Bay Series Book 5

It all started with a New Year's kiss and a bit of Tequila.

"There was no poetry inside him that could do her justice".

Lance and Mary, best of friends, running a bookstore in small-town Cliffside Bay, with completely different views on relationships..... experience the push and pull of letting ones own fears and anxieties rule over what they truly want; each other.

As one aspect of their relationship comes too light, changes are agreed upon as the two move into the challenges of uncharted territory, together. It becomes a long, emotional, and winding path these two find themselves on while Mary struggles to allow herself the shedding of past mistakes, healing, and breaking down the very walls she's built around her fragile heart.

The ebb and flow of feelings; frustration, pain, trauma and yes, joy, are deeply felt in relation to Lance and Mary as they continue too dance around relationship issues during a time when the lives of their friends continue to grow towards a promising future.
What you will never see coming, however, is a surprising twist of such magnitude it will make you gasp.

I was thrilled to see once again how truly devoted all of these characters are too one another due to their deep intertwining of friendship....those friends, known as none other than, the Dogs and Wags.

Tess Thompson has "wowed" once again with her ease of writing and talents in story telling, one that will have you crying, cheering and experiencing the "laughing-tears" just as much, if not more than its previous installments. It's enjoyable too a fault which makes it that much more difficult in preparing yourself to say goodbye to such a lovable and meaningful story.

This story has it all and leaves no questions unanswered as it comes to a close on the lives we've become so familiar with, so attached to within the Cliffside Bay Series. Will there be another around the corner?

I thank Tess Thompson for the gift of this ARC in order to read, enjoy and review as well as a wonderful story that I truly believe has touched each of us as readers and by bringing to light a little piece of ourselves within its pages by flawed, yet lovable characters such as these.

Tainted: A bittersweet journey you'll want to take.......

Lance Mullen thought he knew what he wanted out of life, until a career ending mistake brings him home to Cliffside Bay. Watching his closest friends marry and start families has Lance wishing for things he doesn’t have. His new beach house, profitable investments and friends and family can’t give him the one thing he longs for. And, his heart is about to get him into trouble again, as he has once again chosen a woman who seems unattainable.

Mary Hansen spends her time reading and relating the people in her life to characters in books. She’s built a wall around her heart that no one can break through after losing her baby, mother and marriage all in quick succession. She’s found a sense of contentment with her books, but Lance seems to be the one person that can penetrate the walls around her heart.

But, when one bad decision on New Year’s Eve after too much tequila change the friendship between Lance and Mary forever, they’ll both need to to take a leap of faith and believe that they can be exactly who they both need to feel whole again.

The entire Cliffside Bay series has been phenomenal, but I really fell in love with Lance and Mary’s story. Lance is such a stand-up guy. His heart is set on Mary and making her happy even when she is as prickly as a porcupine and it seems like there is no hope for a relationship. His unwavering love and support for her is enough to wear any woman down . . . including the untrusting and bitter Mary.

Poor Mary has been through so much, that I understand the walls she has built to protect herself and that she feels more comfortable identifying with the characters in her books. Watching Lance break through to her heart makes for an incredibly gorgeous story.

And, while this is Lance and Mary’s story, readers get to catch up with all of their favorite couples from Cliffside Bay. There are major life events, some happy others heartbreaking and a few even harrowing for each and every couple readers have grown to love throughout this series. These characters are magically woven together to make readers feel like each book in this series pulls you further and further into the happenings of this little seaside community.

Snag your ice cream, glass of wine and box of tissues for Tainted as it’s one heck of an emotional journey. 5 stars!

Fantastic finish to this amazing series! Lance is AWESOME!

Oh my, where do I start? This book was so wonderful, so full of love and heart and ALL the feels! Lance is the last of the Dogs, the last to find his Wag. Well, he found her alright, but he's got an uphill battle trying to convince her that she's worth loving and that he's worth the risk. Lance is the quintessential Mr. Nice Guy, always falling for the wrong girl or getting friend-zoned right from the start. Mary is the wounded bird, filled with guilt that comes out sideways as spite. One amazing New Year's kiss sends these two hurtling down the path to their HEA at a breakneck speed, while their friends and family just try to survive the whiplash.

I loved - loved, loved, loved - the four previous books. Each one is a standalone romance that gives us so much more of all the Cliffside Bay characters. But this one? OMG, it takes everything up a huge notch and gives us a memorable - though at times gut-wrenching and heart-rending - visit with the whole cast of unforgettable characters. Tragedy strikes one couple, heart-stopping suspense stalks another, while miracles abound where you least expect them and Lives. Are. Changed.

Throughout it all, the emotions are spilling all over the place as the author reminds us of all the hidden important moments in life, and how nothing should ever be taken for granted. If you get through this book without both an ugly cry and a triumphant dance, you'd better get your heart checked to make sure it's still there.

And through it all, Lance loves Mary like no one has ever loved a woman before. And Mary starts to believe that she deserves it. Pure romantic bliss on every single page. I had such a book hangover after reading this one. Now I'm putting all five at the top of my TBR list to binge-read in order. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Tainted: Lance and Mary, is another wonderful continuation of the emotionally charged Cliffside Bay series by Author Tess Thompson! In the 5th book in this series, Lance has found the love of his life, Mary. Carrying a lot of baggage from a painful past, Mary does not want to be in any type of relationship. Due to the death of her daughter during birth and a husband that was having an affair with the local barista, Mary feels she will never love and trust another man again. Of course, Lance has other ideas. During the New Years Eve celebration with family and friends, Lance kisses Mary and causes a stir in her frozen façade. Confused by the stir of emotions that Lance's kiss causes, Mary is not quite ready to go home alone. Instead she wants to go to Lance's home to have a few celebratory drinks. After having too much to drink, Mary comes up with the idea of having Lance father her child. Doing what was necessary to seduce Lance, Mary tells him that she is on birth control. Leaving the next morning with a guilty conscience, Mary and Lance's friendship turns cold and Lance starts dating other women. Mary soon learns she is pregnant and confronts Lance. He is thrilled and the idea of marrying Mary for insurance purposes is just what he needs to try to win Mary's heart. Fighting her guilty conscience for planning the pregnancy, Mary will not allow herself to fall in love with Lance. After finally admitting to her falsehood, love eventually wins out and Mary and Lance find happiness at last. Through laughter, tears, joy, and pain, Tainted will take you through all of the emotions. With several twists and turns, you will not only see the beauty of a love that has withstood many trials and tribulations, you will see how real life touches the other resident's of Cliffside Bay. Author Tess Thompson continues to fulfill my hunger for this awesome series! I am excited to see what the future holds for my favorite characters of Cliffside Bay!

Lance Mullen has come home to Cliffside Bay after a relationship with a woman caused a career ending mistake, so he needs a fresh start. Luckily, his friends & family are all there to support him, so life is quickly gotten better, except he wants the marriage & family like they all have. He has a thing for Mary Harsen, but trying to get her to see him in that light isn't going to be easy. See, Mary, has built a huge all around her heart after losing her mother, child, & marriage, and believes that having her dream job, a few friends, and all of her books are enough to keep her content. However, after a crazy New Year's of drinking, a mistake has come out of it between them that will set them both on a new, complicated course. This was my favorite story yet in the Cliffside Bay series, yeah yeah I know, I say that about all of them, but it's true. Mary has always been just off to the side, a mystery that I wanted to know more about, and finally I do. No one really liked her but Lance, and I know she's been hard at times, but she really didn't like herself much either, and I felt her pain like it was my own, especially since her life wasn't easy. So the amazing Tess Thompson did a fantastic job of really penning an amazing story to give us the inside look of Mary finally facing herself. And she & Lance were amazing together. The twist that I was waiting to be revealed, well, when it was because secrets always come out, the reaction really shocked me silly, so YAY for another shocker! And the cast of secondaries make of up characters from the previous stories were all present & accounted for, so there were plenty of laughs to go along with all of the angst. What another amazing story in an amazing series, and I hope it never ends! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I don't even know where to begin with this review. The entire series is wonderful, but Lance stole my heart. Seeing all of his friends fall in love, he felt like the fifth wheel so he decided to kiss Mary on New Years Eve. Unfortunately for Lance she doesn't respond the way he hoped she would. Even though she shut him down, she doesn't want to be alone, so she asks him to take her home. He takes her to his house and they have a nightcap. From there, everything changes.
Mary doesn't believe that she deserves to be loved and that there is something wrong with her. Lance decides that he wants Mary so he will do what it takes to make her his. HIs friends don't believe that he loves her- she has made it hard for people to like her- due to her past. When their one night together results in the one thing that Mary has always wanted (regardless of how it happened) Lance steps up marries her. His plan is self serving in a way, he believes she will love him within the year and he can finally have Mary forever.
Knowing that she has a secret, Mary tries to keep him an arms length away. Unfortunately for her, Lance won't give up. When her secret comes to light, will Lance be able to forgive her? Understanding that this is supposed to be the last book in the series, every story was wrapped up in a wonderful way. There was so much heart in this book. Even Mary broke down my defenses and found a way into my heart. I think there will be a spinoff with the security guard and the friends that came to town.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.

It’s like the end of a very good series, 😔. I did NOT expect these events for Lance and Mary. And I must say it took almost being more than halfway thru the book to actually like Mary. Lance I’ve liked since Book 1.

Mary has serious trust issues and insecurities that made her extremely immature. Lance wore his heart on his sleeves and was just adorable. Poor guy always felt like he wasn’t good enough for anyone or always placed in the friend zone. He knew there was more to bitter Mary than what everyone else saw. He told her how he felt but she couldn’t get over her past. Something unexpectedly happened between these two and Lance the always responsible one stepped up and took matters into his own hands. Mary instead of seeing what was right before her eyes kept comparing him to her ex. In this book Kara was a god sent as always because in one way or another both her and Mary helped each other out in difficult situations. There was a heartbreaking moment between Brody and Kara that hit close to home.

As time passed Mary finally opened to Lance and he was there patiently waiting. I loved reading the updates on The Dogs and Wags and as always it’s never a dull moment between these “brothers”. It was beautiful to see how in one way or another they have all helped each other out.

It’s sad to see the end of this series BUT I think the author can squeeze out one more. We need an update!! Also how about Stone and Pepper?! 🤔😊

Just when you think that you've got author Tess Thompson's formula all figured out, she publishes another book that just blows you away. Seriously, I read this book in one sitting, it's so good!

Lance is head over feet in love with Mary, but he isn't quite sure if she feels the same. Mary keeps Lance and all men, in general, in the friend zone. Mary has a past that has left her broken and un-trusting, regardless of how handsome and charming Lance might be.

BUT, oh goodness is this is a but....on New Year's Eve, Lance musters up the courage with a wee bit of coaxing from Mary to give her a kiss that is electric from her toes to her top. As Mary watches Lance's friends, happily married and many of them expecting, she is plagued with jealousy and a plan begins to form in the back of her head....one that involves tequila and regrets much greater than a hangover the next morning.

....six weeks later, Mary finds herself pregnant and Lance finds himself whisking her off her feet to Vegas for a quickie wedding. Mary sees it as a contract, Lance sees it as an opportunity to gain her love. After all, Mary told Lance she was pregnant, but she left out a few details.

Lance and Mary's tale is irresistible. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, I cheered... The Dogs and The Wags are in for a roller coaster of emotions in this book! This is a must read!

So I came into the Cliffside Bay series a little late. I started getting involved around book three with Zane and Honor and I was starting to wonder if maybe these books just weren’t for me. Just as I was ready to give up on these sappy little romance stories, Tess Thompson had a “hold my beer” moment and really gave me a punch to the gut.

Mary is by far one of the most relatable characters I’ve ever read about. She had suffered so much loss and just couldn’t risk opening her heart up again to lose another person. I lost my sister back in 2013 and had a miscarriage in 2014 and those two tragic loses so close just wrecked me. To have an author, tap into that pain and describe it so perfectly is definitely a master of this profession.

Now can we talk about Lance for a second? He is everything I could ever hope for in a book boyfriend. Mary didn’t even stand a chance. I’m glad he kept at it.

Don’t get me wrong, the romance is perfection but there’s also a bit more to the story. There’s some suspense in this one and a character or two to despise. I mean, Tess threw every emotion in a blender and turned it on high!! Ugh and how about that ending??? Tears were shed.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 out of 5) Tess Thompson knocks it out of the park with Lance and Mary’s story!! Bravo, bravo!! I’m going to need an encore!!

Is faith, all by itself enough?

“She thinks all men eventually cheat. Once again, he’s in the friend zone.” But it’s so much more complicated than that. Two people with lives intertwined in mutual friends, deception and one tequila-fueled night struggle to find the courage to love and trust each other. Mary and Lance are emotionally scarred, afraid to open themselves to heartache again.

Tess Thompson weaves a love story for two people struggling to overcome their emotional baggage. Set against a circle of tight-knit friends, it’s a story of love, loss, and healing. “Every human life at one point in time was touched by loss and disappointment. There was no escape from this truth.” Sometimes loss brings people closer together, and strength for healing comes from unexpected places. Thompson’s characters are complex and flawed, and she brings them and their struggles to life. This book addresses heart-breaking loss yet remains a love story. The romance is stronger for being forged in sorrow. “I don’t care how broken you are. Everyone is in one way or another, including me. If we take our broken pieces and put them together, we can become whole. An impenetrable team. A perfect puzzle, still with cracks, but formed into something profound. Let me love you back together.”

This installment lets us get to know Lance and Mary. They have been hinted at in previous installments, but we really know very little about them.

Lance is Brady's brother. Mary's father is married to the former Mullen housekeeper and nanny, Flora, and always seemed to hate everyone. And somehow, the two of them had become friends and totally have the hots for each other.

But we finally get to know why Mary has such a hard shell covering her. And it is a true gut-punch. But she is still a paradox, as you feel sorry for her, and yet she plays a game that could easily backfire on her.

Because Mary is pregnant after their one and only encounter, Lance, true to Dog form, steps up to marry her. The claim is that it is for insurance, but really, it is so much more. He is determined to break through her shell and prove that she is in love with him.

I admit that this one is my least favorite of the series thus far. It is very hard for me to develop an attachment to Mary for now, because of her confusion, and some manipulation. And yet I feel sorry for her and hope that I will come around and see her more through Lance's eyes, along with others in Cliffside Bay.

I guarantee that this one will make you bawl like a baby. It also has a lot of wisdom in its quotes, which I love.
