"This story took my breath away." (Previously published as A Class Act.) Marcus Armstrong is the youngest, most successful billionaire CEO to grace London's Square Mile. He also happens to be one half of Britain's most beautiful celebrity couple. But that's not what Lottie Mathieson is interested in. She wants his brains, his connections, his ambition, his respect. So much so, she'll become someone else to get it.
When the professional becomes personal, and they embark on an obsessive affair, their fall from grace is anything but graceful. And Lottie has to learn the hard way that it's not who you are when you're on top that defines you; it's how you get up when you fall.
If you like your billionaire, brooding heroes with a side serving of feisty female and a whole host of forbidden lust vibes, this is the series for you.
I am a Brit indie romance author who writes about love worth fighting for.
I live in the rural south of England with my husband, daughter and crazy sprockapoo.
Until recently, I inhabited the fast-paced, adrenalin-fuelled workplaces I write about, as a communications professional. Now I spend my days dreaming up new characters and stories and trying not to lose my marbles as the mother of a spirited preschooler.
It fucking ruined this book. Took way too much page time from developing H/h. So much plot was developed via inner monologue of SECONDARY characters. AND with all the fucking POVs we did get...why not the OW, we sure heard from the OM enough.
Another problem was pacing. Too much time on the minutia of the h’s job. I definitely feel the h was a legit superstar in her field, unlike most h’s, but it went on too long. Maybe if there’d been more of H/h interacting during these events I could have borne it better.
In the end, the multi POVs, plot development through inner monologue, weird pacing with too much daily grind, all reminded me of an 80’s historical or an HP novel. Even with the modern elements it just seemed like the story telling was dated and clumsy.
Such a shame. I could have 4 starred this easily.
Cheating H on OW/GF, sex off page with GF during H/h affair, sex off page with OM/BF during separation, but little steam in all honestly. H/h are only together at 45%, they separate at 72% and aren’t together until last 5% when 2 years had passed — Don’t know why this was romance, more chick lit of anything.m
DNF 98%
Quotes: —“He knew he was far better looking than the average man - with millions in the bank which didn’t hurt - and enjoyed watching these young, shallow floozies swoon before his eyes.” - LMAO and it’s not even H’s POV, but the H/OM
Lottie is my favourite type of protagonist: one who's pretending to be something she's not. In her world, if she doesn't have a perceived privilege (i.e. born into a rich family) she won't have the same professional opportunities. Since she has a juvenile record and grew up going to public school, she had to lie about her past in order to get a job at her dream company. She works what seems like a thousand times harder than her coworkers, and she's extremely capable and intelligent. I loved the way that James gradually reveals Lottie's backstory as the novel progresses, as her past begins to catch up with her.
A Class Act is not just a romance. There's a lot of marketing and business talk--and it genuinely seemed like the author knew what she was talking about--which adds to the authenticity of the characters and setting. James doesn't just tell us that Lottie is smart, driven, and exceptional at her job, it's shown to us by her long hours, the sheer amount of research she puts into her marketing plans, and the way that she rattles off information when questioned about her ongoing projects. I found these parts to be just as compelling as the romantic bits (nerd alert!). The storylines with some of her clients are quite engaging, and, in my opinion, this is what makes this book better than other boss/employee romance trope novels. I absolutely loved reading about Lottie strategizing with clients, putting out fires, and impressing her clients with her honesty and out-of-the-box thinking.
Lottie and Marcus have fabulous chemistry, though I would have liked to have seen just a bit more of their attraction in their earlier interactions. Marcus works Lottie hard because he knows that she's the best employee he's had, despite her being freshly out of university. He's hard on her, and Lottie gets the impression that he doesn't like her. Of course, once their mutual attraction becomes impossible to resist, she no longer thinks that. 😉
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a boss/employee romance with a little more substance.
*Thank you to the author for the ebook to review!*
This writer needs to brush up on the different perspectives and the 'do's' and 'don't's' of each one. Lordy but this book was all over the place. And I mean all. over. the place. Points of view shifted in the same paragraphs, there were points of view from many different characters all thrown together so it was difficult to discern wtf was going on with the perspective. It was messy as hell
I think - I THINK - that this was an attempt at what is called 'omniscient perspective.' Omniscient perspective is a terrible idea, regardless of the genre, but it is an extra bad choice for a romance/account of a young woman's journey. Those kinds of stories you want a reader to connect to your MAIN characters, i.e., your heroine and your hero. Omniscient perspective is very disconnected. It bounces from person to person leaving too many characters to keep straight and, in addition, the story comes off like an info dump because everything is being told at once. Not a wise choice for this story.
The issue of perspective alongside the overall unpolished feel and too much showing with too little telling brand this book as an obvious debut. So, I could forgive all that. I could even forgive the tedious name-dropping and fixation on labels and brand names. Why? Because the story wasn't half bad. The writer has potential.
But I don't know that I'll be reading any more by her, because she's another writer that portrays the female gender as weak and thinks the way to bring her to heel is to have a man kiss or f*ck her. No thanks.
Marcus was a coward and a twat. He did so much damage and abandoned the heroine for TWO YEARS while she fought to pick up the pieces of her life. And then suddenly he appears, making demands and acting an entitled arse. And the heroine knows he's not to be trusted and there might be too much to forgive. She tries to fight him but he pushes himself on her and then the dreaded BBS takes over. Apparently a good hard snogging and rogering makes up for literally destroying a person's life, public humiliation, abandonment. Is it REALLY? I'd have nutted him, dragged him outside by his hair, dumped him in the hall and spit on him as I walked away and locked the door behind me. He was a cheater, anyway. They both are. Also, there was zero chemistry here.
The book wasn't half bad but I dislike weak women, and women who believe they are 'his.' That's not romantic to me. It's kind of pathetic because I don't know about anyone else but whether I'm single or not, I belong to myself.

This was my very first ARC book. I couldn’t have picked a better debut novel. Marcus was everything you’d want in the leading male. My hate/love with leading ladies is a real thing, however Lottie has to be one of the smartest, level headed females I’ve read in a while. I truly couldn’t put this book down once I cracked it open. HEA after some push And pull and growth. Definitely worth a read!
This book had me hook since the first chapter, it was a change of my latest readings, and it was a welcome one. This story took my breath away, it made me feel so much, it was either excitement, anger and anxious to know what was going to happen next.
This book tell the story of Charlotte and Marcus, she just landed the work of her dreams, and he is CEO of his VC, she is excited to work under him, she admires him, aspire to make him proud, he is hard to work for and never seems to be pleased, but he sees the potential she has and want to explore it, and also there’s something else there, He just don’t want to admit he wants her, the way she clearly does.
The thing is she has a past, she doesn’t want anyone to know, and he has a long term girlfriend, and a life already planned.
The tension between those two had me on edge, and when it finally happened I was speechless, I think I infatuated myself with Marcus, and was as lost as Charlotte was.
Their relationship had me hook, I love the controlling ass that Marcus was, I like that he was so sure of himself, and then later on those were the things that made me want to kill him, and inevitably root for Zac at some point, January wrote him so perfect, it was the exact opposite of Marcus, and I loved him for it, but I understood why he wasn’t perfect for Charlotte.
Charlotte loved the way Marcus pressure her to be better, to do better, and she loved to surprise him doing even more than she was asked, he loved the way she reacted every time he pushed her, and the control he had over her, in every sense.
When thing inevitably go south I hated the way it affected Charlotte, but I loved the way she put herself back together, the personal growth she had, and the way she was so capable on her own, and I love the way she put herself first at the end, because I feel like she discovered that the only approval she needed was herself. She was such a strong independent woman, I felt so proud.
The book just keeps getting better and better the more you read, I’m going to be honest, I wanted to punch Marcus so much at some point, I wanted him to suffer the way Lottie was, and I wanted her to be above the situation, and God, she was, I love the story, loved the characters, and the couple drove me crazy, but at the end, they were perfect for each other.
So I can totally say this is the perfect first book of a new series, I highly recommend this story, you will want more and more, because the writing is amazing.
I read books for my enjoyment , this wonderful book took my enjoyment many levels higher.
What a fantastic debut novel !
I am always wary about females in books I either love or hate them . This book has Lottie who is extremely strong minded , has class , is determined , she is a character that you want to know. And she has brains!!! She has a past that she wishes didn't bother her but .....what goes around, can easily come back..
Marcus her boss is wealthy and privileged also has the looks of all the office staff ....the connection of Lottie and Marcus is written so very well I didn't put down !
Marcus has a heart.
I couldn't get enough , every page you turn you hope that it's not the ending ..... Wonder characters with very impressive side characters..
Waiting for the second book in this series.
I loved this book so much I have starting to re read .... Strong characters who took me on such a wonderful journey where I felt as if I was there with them..
A Class Act is more than a forbidden office romance it is somewhat of a statement on how people are pegged by certain mores of society, especially in business. January James has given the reader a story of growth, failure, healing, rediscovery and coming together. The character growth that Lottie goes through is remarkable. From her early fears of what might hold her back to her downfall and renewal are so inspiring.
Lottie Matheson has overcome so much in her short lifetime. She has invented a whole new self. This new Lottie has goals to take not just what she has learned in school, but her work ethic and her drive to give her client and her boss the best outcome she can. She was forced into making some wrong decisions as a youth, and her hope is to hide her past and concentrate on her future.
James used words to place readers in the office where we see that Lottie’s fears are justifiable as we learn about her co-workers. We can watch Lottie’s plans and visions for several companies she is working with grow and develop as she puts in motion the birth of one company and the revival of another.
Marcus Armstrong started The Falcon Group with a vision; he had a plan and when the time was right he put his plan into action and The Falcon Group became one of the most successful investment firms. He had a knack at picking out the next new company that would make waves in the world. Marcus is not perfect by any means, but it is quite obvious he is a man who is driven not just by business but there is a story somewhere that will eventually give the reader background on why he has become the person that he is.
In a perfect working world both Lottie and Marcus had similar visions. They should have been able to work together, they should have been able to take the world of entrepreneurship by storm, instead one was ruined and broken and one realized they had been played and manipulated by outside forces. Yes, their personal relationship was full of sexual tension and when they finally gave into the attraction it was like little fires going off again and again, but a well laid out media attack on one of them will throw their lives into a period of chaos and acceptance.
There is great insight into the world of finance and marketing in this story. After finishing book 1, I’m looking forward to reading Book 2.
Marcus is the hero you love to hate or hate to love?! Could he have handled everything with Lottie better? Absolutely! But then she wouldn’t have grown as a person, settled her past or realized her true passion.
This book has a unique twist on rags to riches. Love, deceit, ruin and redemption. I really enjoyed Lottie’s determination to succeed, no matter the obstacles. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the Square Mile series.
I stayed up last night until 2am reading Class Act because I just HAD to finish this story. This was the first time I picked up a book and started reading with no idea what the story was about, I just jumped in without reading anything about it first and I fell in LOVE with it. I do have to admit that at first the POV threw me off a bit I usually like reading first person POV's so it took me a good chapter to get in the groove of the third person POV but honestly I don't think this story could be written in any other way or would be as good in a different POV. There are so many moving parts and characters and details that make this story so amazing! Lottie is smart and strong and I just adore her. Even with some of her questionable choices I can see her and Marcus' pull towards each other and I really don't think they had any choice on ignoring that pull. I love Zac and Riya, and even Janet. To sum it up in the simplest terms, this book took me pleasantly by surprise and I just love it, it had all the feels and was well rounded and I'm just beyond happy that I read it. Thank you January James for this story and I can not wait for your next one!
One of my Romantic and fiction reads which also leads story towards protagonist beauty with brains and her journey of accomplishing all her desires in life.
Title “A class Act” make justice to the book when Charlotte (Lottie) spread her wings in her dream Job despites her dark past which buried under classy style. Her ambition, brilliance and go getter attitude is the knot which ties whole journey intact. She managed to reach in lime light of CEO Marcus at the same time also start falling for him. These lava of emotions was very much mutual in both sides, which works like boomerang. As their love endeavors fighting all odds in both of their world is the essence of story. The way other characters’ portrait in the story also hold the grip of story, which helps you to have wide perspective towards them apart of leads. Story get more interesting when characters start unveiling layers of their life and how everything makes pure sense not mere fantasy.
I have come across such a fabulous novel, as I want to see more from author January James. Her writing is very captivating and one can`t never get enough. I am surprised its her debut novel which quite impressive. There more than one narrations as story moves from one angle to another which is quite carefully balance by the characters each time. I managed to finish seventy percent of it in one sitting, which I feel only because your involvement into the story.
I will defiantly recommend to read this novel, also not to mention about appropriate audiences are Adults.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Author in return for an honest review.
This book was a roller coaster for me I was angry, swooning, laughing, crying, it took me all over the map, and I couldn’t put it down.
This book centres around Charolette “Lottie” Matheson and Marcus Armstrong. Lottie just landed her dream job working for CEO Marcus Armstrong, Lottie worked her ass off to get where she is today.
Lottie isn’t who she says she is, her childhood was not the best growing up. But despite that Lottie has worked really hard to keep her past in the past, she changed her name, appearance and even the way she talks, but the past never stays in the past.
Lottie worked her way to get on a special project working closely with the CEO Marcus, the chemistry between these two are palpable. They both tried to deny their feeling for each other for the longest time since they work together and he is her boss, it also doesn’t help that he is in a relationship with someone else and she doesn’t want to be the other woman but she can’t help her feelings towards Marcus.
Eventually they give in to each other and can’t get enough. But of course life gets in the way and secrets come to light.
Now Lottie has to start all over, she overcomes heartbreak and finds herself along the way.
I highly recommend A Class Act. I have never read anything like it, it was a refreshing change but totally worth it. Plus I am a sucker for a happily ever after!
Thanks so much for the opportunity to read your fabulous book January.
First I want to say that I love Lottie! She is a strong, super smart female lead. It was refreshing to read a book where the female lead has brains and isn't just somebody's secretary. Marcus- What can I say. Everything you want in a male lead; domineering, confident, cocky and sexy as all hell. Lottie had a difficult up bringing and although I wish this was explored a little more it showed her strength and made me love her even more as a character. The friendship that Lottie develops with Riya was also a winner in the character department. She became the kind of bestie every women needs!
This is an office romance but with a lots of twist and turns a long the way. Different from the others I have read in this genre. I also felt there was enough detail about the industry they worked in that I understood what was going on without it being boring or confusing.
There were a few moment where my heart broke for Lottie! Plenty of emotional ups and downs that had me wanting to carry on reading and I certainly did this. Read it in one sitting! It was really well written and it had a really good amount of detail in the story.
This was a great debut novel by January James, I really enjoyed it and I will certainly be reading more of her books!
A class act is the first book in the square miles series by January James. This book is about Charlotte “Lottie” who covets to veil her corrupt past courtesy of fake identity, acquiring her dream job at Falcon Investments. Be that as it may, she is actually driven, hard-working and clever, catching the attention of the CEO, Marcus. Despite the difficulty of the tasks he assigns Lottie, she manages to execute them, exceeding his expectations and developing feelings for him in the process. However, Marcus is off-limits as he is engaged to his father’s friend’s daughter, but in spite of that, the attraction is not one-sided. This book is filled with drama and unexpected twists that kept me on edge. In my opinion, the only drawback of this book was that it was written in third person. I mainly read books written in first person so it did take me a while to get used to it, however, the authors use of descriptive words was immaculate which made it easier to ignore the change. Overall, I doubtlessly recommend reading this book as I’m sure the story would make it worth your time reading it 😁👍 A big thank you to the author, January James, for sending me a copy of the book for an honest review 💕
From start to finish, no matter how confident I was that I had things figured out, I was proved wrong and left shocked by the sudden plot twists!! A Class Act was such an original read and I feel confident in saying that it is one of the most up-and-coming debut novels to have so far graced my bookshelf! 😬😅
The character chemistry of Lottie and Marcus is next level steamy and had me giddy from beginning to end! 🥰 Individually, both characters were their own kind of captivating with Lottie fast becoming a staple of independence, resilience and all things a woman aspires to be. Lottie was told in a realistic way, sans the fairytale life of everything being handed to her on a silver platter and mentality of life being perfect, she was instantly relatable and above all loveable! Marcus, well holy heck, all I'm currently capable of saying for Marcus is he was the perfect blend of control, power, mystery and broodyness and just all round sexiness! 🤤🤤 He is definitely a book boyfriend that every woman should have the joy of discovering! 😅
My only complaint for this book (not even a complaint, just me being greedy 😅) is that I would have loved to have had more time with Marcus and Lottie as a couple, because let's face it their "bond" (cough, cough) is electric 😍😂
I loved this book. I loved how it was written and how each character in the story came about.
Lottie was a fighter and didn't let things stand in her way. From how she was raised, it made her the woman she was. She didn't let that stop her. I understood why she had to change and forget about her past. She needed to move on from that.
At the beginning of the story, I didn't like Marcus and his behavior towards Lottie. But, as their relationship went on, I loved them together. Of course, the ending when he finally laid it all out and told her everything.
I want to point out Lottie and Jacob’s friendship. Their scenes together had me crying. Jacob just missed his friend so much. I understood how Jacob was from her past, and she just wanted to forget that her past, but man, those scenes just made me sad. But I like how in the end, Lottie finally would visit him.
I like how in the book, we got to learn about the different characters. Sometimes you don't get that chance, so it was nice to get that.
I enjoyed reading A Class Act by January James, and I can't wait to read more stories from her.
When I first started this book I was hesitant as it was written completely different from what I am used to but after a few pages in I knew I was going to be hooked. This story was written so beautifully. You not only get to know your main characters but so many more. The author gives you insight into the thoughts of so many characters. Lottie is a beautiful and brilliant woman. She is driven and passionate. Marcus is the epitome of the word alpha male. He is broody and harsh. Bring these two together and you get to see the perfect contradiction to everything they appear to be. This story is filled with hidden pasts, betrayal, forbidden love and page after page of twists and turns. This is not your simple office romance. This book is so much more and had me swooning, angry, anxious and all the emotions. January James is brilliant and I am truly excited to see more of what she delivers.
A Class Act is a beautifully written novel. It leads you on an adventure as you read about Lottie and Marcus finding their way to each other. Lottie is a relatable character, she is a hard working woman trying to fit into a lifestyle that she did not grow up in. The characters are so well written and their storyline has you flipping your pages to see what will happen next and if they end up together. Marcus is swoon worthy and will he be her happily ever after?
I received this book from the author in return for an honest review and this is my own opinion on the book. This was unlike any romance story I have previously read. The female lead character Lottie was a strong independent woman who had turned her life around after a dodgy last to land her dream job. She was ambitious and incredibly hard working which caught the eye of the CEO Marcus. She finds herself falling for him and he keeps making the tasks he gives he more difficult for her only to exceed his expectations. This was definitely not the typical office romance, especially when the news of their relationship was leaked to the newspapers. I would definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more books from this author.
This is the first book I’ve read by January James, and I have to say, I am so very happy to have read this book. I love that she wrote the thoughts and words of every character, I feel it gives the book more prospective. It has a very intelligent vibe to it that I adore, and you can tell January worked in this world before. The is just amazing! I loved that Charlotte was able to pick her up after a disaster. I was appalled by some of Marcus’ behavior, and sometimes wanted to hit him. For this being a first novel, I’m impressed. It’s not like other romance novels at all, but it still made my skin burn from all the feelings I had for it. This is a definite must read and I highly recommend it! This book will stay with me and I can’t wait to read the next book.
Thank you January for sending this to me. I’m not including any spoilers because I genuinely feel like going into this book without expectation makes it even better. I can’t even describe how much I love Lottie and the time paid to her career. I’ve read so many office romances where the woman’s career is just kind of there as a way to put her and the boss together. But Lottie is so invested, determined, and strong in her career that it really rounded her out as a character. I came for the romance, but stayed for Lottie... and the romance 🔥. I think this is a really great read for anyone who likes slower burn romAnces and humanized characters rather than tropes.
January is a new to me author that reached out to ask if I would like to receive the book for free in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say that after reading the book, I am hooked and can't wait to see more from her. I really can't believe this was her first book. I am an avid reader and seriously enjoyed this book. It started off a little confusing because of the fast changing point of views from the characters at times. I love that the book gave us a wild emotional ride. There were times where I just wanted to shake Lottie and then others just hug her. There is a final HEA which I of course an addicted too. I highly recommend the book to anyone.
Where to start. Unlike many other romance books, this isn’t written in first person. It took a little getting used to at first but offered an exciting insight into the stories of other people in the book, not just the main characters. They story was exciting, a little predictable at times but it was still very enjoyable. I couldn’t put it down and have spent every free moment cram reading.
The characters were easily likeable and I loved Lotties development. The only think I wished for was that Marcus remained brooding and less soppy for the ending - but I’m a lover of bad guys.
Notifications on for updates on the next one!! Thank you January James.

Wow!! Ok. 1st ARC book. I'll admit, being American, it took me a couple dozen pages into this book but I am so glad I kept reading until the flow kicked in. This book is so we'll thought out, the descriptions are perfect, and is so intertwined that before you realize it, you want a story for each and every character. Which is great because there are more books to follow. Love Lottie and Marcus!!! This author is a must read for me now. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of reading your book! ❤️
I loved this book. I got it today, blew off work, and read it through til the very end. If you’re looking for a story with a strong, ambitious, and determined female protagonist, this will definitely fit the bill. Lottie’s backstory unfolds slowly, but in a good way. It allows you to connect with her, so when it’s revealed, you know she’s worked her ass off to get where she is. There are plenty of different voices within the story to keep you engaged. I will be following January James and look forward to reading more from her. Congratulations on a great debut book.
A Class Act is a debut book from new author January James. This book definitely does not read like a brand new author to me. I admit I normally do not read this type of books, but I was intrigued and once I started reading this I could not put it down. I became invested in Lottie, and wanted to know more, I needed to know more. Ms. James does such an amazing job with the storyline that you feel like you are a part of it. You become invested in the story. I eagerly look forward to the next story.
A Class Act is not your typical romance novel, and I mean that in a good way. The story is about more than the characters HEA (Happily Ever After). The story is well written with complex and intriguing characters. There is a lot more going on than just a romance. There is self discovery, true friendship, work/life balance, love and betrayal and it is all woven together perfectly in this book. If you are someone who prefers authors you know, step out of your comfort zone and take a chance on January James with "A Class Act", you won't be disappointed.
I loved not only the romance in this book but the personal growth Lottie experienced from beginning to end. The sexual tension between her and her boss Marcus is 🔥🔥. This is a book that begs to be read from the moment you open it. The emotional descriptions have you feeling like your living this story. I absolutely love how you get to hear different parts from not only main characters but super minimal ones like the secretaries. Overall a great read that I would definitely recommend!
