When rodeo cowboy Seth’s best friend dies unexpectedly from cancer, he finds himself taking on a ranch and a bunch of his friend’s younger siblings, because they have nowhere else to turn. Seth loves those kids like they’re his own, and he settles in well to his new life, which is why he’s pretty wary when his buddy’s older brother finally makes it home from a long stint in the military.Law knows he might get a chilly reception at his brother Pistol’s old ranch, even if the kids living there are his half-siblings. He didn’t make it to his brother’s funeral, after all, but to his credit, he was blown up trying to come home to do just that. He’s fighting injuries and insecurity, but when Seth welcomes him to the family ranch, Law knows he’s pretty much in love. Even if he thinks Seth was his brother’s lover. Can these two find a way to let their emotions out before tragedy strikes their family again?

This is my first time reading this author's work. I liked the light hearted writing style, many likable characters, and my curiosity was satisfied about cowboy way of life. The book was well written, and I would have liked the story more if Law and Seth, the MCs, got more on page time: a little romance, getting to know each other and the like. I think the overabundance of kids and their day to day needs overwhelmed the story. It felt unbalanced as if the kids were given more thought and attention while the two men whose love story should have been at the forefront were somehow forgotten.
The story was very easy to read and get into and emphasized the importance of family. There was a fair amount of humorous situations that made me smile and even laugh. There is mild steam and very low angst. Everything is mostly very positive and happy. From what the blurb stated I expected raw feelings and more angst. There were so many subjects to explore: grief, PTSD, injuries and therapy, but the main focus was on the children and their minute life choices, daily activities and problems. I wish it was less kids time and more grown up serious angsty time, alas it was not meant to be. I gave this story a fair chance. Some parts I liked, some parts I found a bit tedious. A wonderful cowboy romance with lots of heart, humor and humanity ! Seth, the former Rodeo Cowboy, is now raising, running and caring for his deceased best friend's ranch and family.
The older brother, Law, has been an Army Ranger, injured and scarred recently in war, and has finally come home. What will that mean for the ranch and kids?
What Law finds, is a well run ranch, 5 thriving children of various ages and Seth, who takes care of everything very well. The kids are terrific, smart, savvy and each one is very different from the other. The busy days are lively and chaotic, but Seth can smooth things over, and put everyone back on track. There are a few emergencies where Law gets to pitch in, and with his therapy, he also helps care for the kids.
Ups and downs never mess with the deep love these people have. Law and Seth set the record straight, and become lovers, which grows into much more. After a huge ranch accident with Seth, the whole town and Rodeo friends all chip in to help care for the whole batch of people and family. Then Law's Army buddies show up to help, too.
This is heartwarming, real and gritty, and we like each and every character. ENJOY !
I certainly enjoyed this book. I just love cowboy books by B. A. Tortuga. Her writing is clean and straight forward and just makes me feel like I’m on the ranch with some sexy men. Adding five kids to the mix just made this that much more fun. I hope there’s a book for Hunter in the future.
The blurb had me completely interested in this book and for the most part I enjoyed it. It was a feel good type of book and the characters were all extremely likable. The plot itself flowed nicely and left me content enough to finish.I just felt like there could have been more. By the end of the book I didn’t feel much for the MCS which is kind of a problem for me. They were good together, yes, and I liked them but I just didn’t feel invested.
But, despite that, this was a good read. If you’re looking for something low angst and sweet -- then I do recommend this.
This was the perfect, low angst, sweet, truly stands-on-its-own story to give me a break between all the thrillers I’ve been binging. I don’t know what took so long to try BA Tortuga – but I am totally hooked. (TBR officially explodes!)
Ahhhhh! I’m such a sucker for single parent books. I also love it when authors make life with kids – real. The good & the bad, the fun, the messes, all of it. I also ADORE when the adults in kids lives really love kids and find the joy in that life. This was wonderful in that way.
Seth has inherited the responsibility of parenting the younger 5 siblings when his friend dies. Jumping in with all he has – things have finally started running smoothly when the oldest sibling, Law, suddenly returns. While there were what could have been very angsty subjects here, Tortuga chooses to acknowledge them respectfully but focus on the joys of found & made family. While there are a few steamy scenes, this is best enjoyed when in the mood for something light on the flame and the relationship/story is the focus. I liked that even though there’s a small miscommunication – it’s resolved quickly and without dragging things out.
[I received a digital arc for an honest review] Cowboy's Law is a new western contemporary MM romance by BA Tortuga.
Seth's best friend, Pistol, passes away and leaves him with a whole lot of responsibilities that he accepts in a heartbeat. His rodeo cowboy days are behind him and are now his days are filled with ranch duties and everything that comes with raising 5 children. Unexpectedly Pistol's brother, Law, shows up recently medically discharged from the military. Law integrates himself into their lives and it doesn't take long before the start to form a more than platonic reaction to each other. Yet Law holds himself back because he thinks Seth and Pistol were lover's. Seth needs to set him straight before they can have their chance at a happily ever after. "His brain shorted right out, his air supply whooshing from his lungs in a rush. He didn't need it. All he needed was Seth."
Cowboy's Love was stinkin' adorable. A sweet low angst romance that focus' heavily on family and it being what you make it to be. One of my favorite things about the book was that so much quality time happened in the kitchen and around meals. It was a time for the family to bond and help everyone feel included and responsible. Even though things on the ranch got a bit crazy between the 5 kids it was fun to read, and the little girls just melted your heart with their sweetness. Seth and Law worked great as a team I loved how supportive they were of each other and the tenderness they showed in the bedroom. My biggest issue was that the story got a little lost at the end. It had a climax and a resolution and then kind of continues/lingered for a bit before the epilogue. Almost as if it was setting up for maybe future books with other characters but this is a standalone so it sort of felt unnecessary.
This is my first time reading this author but I wouldn't mind reading more from them in the future.
Not my favorite, but not terrible. I like the characters tho, and I enjoyed the family time. I found myself bored though. The last 30% dragged and took effort to finish. I feel like this could've been better as a short story or a novella. Not a bad read, but not a great one either.
Rating: 4.5 stars This is book has everything that I like about this author’s writing. Cowboys and cute kids. I absolutely loved this book, start to finish. I was afraid that the author was going down the “Big Misunderstanding” route for a minute but it was resolved quickly so didn’t bother me. I just wish that there would have been an epilogue at the end showing the MCs years later after the kids are grown. All in all, a highly enjoyable slice of life story with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure.
Seth has a crazy busy life taking care of 5 kids. They are is best friends siblings. He's busy and tired but happy and loved. Then Law comes home. He's the kids oldest brother who has been away in the military for years. They fast become friends and co parents.
I loved the strong sense of family and love in their home. Seth is an amazing man taking over the parenting of these kids when they've lost everything. Made the parenting feel real, not all sunshine and rainbows. It's hard and tiring too. I loved those kids. The friendship and camaraderie between cowboys and military buddies bought a tear to my eyes. Loved the cowboy speak. Beautiful story of friends, family, love, pain and adversity.
How old is Seth, since everyone keeps saying how old he is?
Why refer to Law as Pistol's when talking to kids, as he is their brother too.
Referring to Seth as "Uncle" vs Seth or Uncle Seth reads awkwardly, same as the siblings addressing each other as Brother or Sister in lieu of their name.
There's just so much focus on the kids chores and activities that I can't help but feel I'm missing out on actually getting to know the characters.
I wasn’t sure if I was reading an mm cowboy romance or ‘Five Little Peppers and How They Grew’! A wonderful book, by the way. This was a menagerie of children. Cute as the five of them were, it totally took away from the relationship part of the story. The author chose to write it this way and I read it, but it was somewhat of a disappointing read. How the family pulled together and cared about each other was nice. The children brought the usual growing up drama amidst the tumult of a very active family. Seth and Law were attractive MCs and I liked their characters. There was little relationship building except for the shared nursemaiding of the children. Passion was non existent and was replaced with some mild horniness. The author knows how to write sex scenes, too bad it took a backseat here. There really were too many kids. I kept having to backtrack in dialogue to understand who was fussing, I mean talking, about what. There is a major injury storyline and it showcased the devotion between the two men. I’m enjoying this author’s comfort reads and I did read the entire story. I have to mention the prologue with rodeo rider Pistol in the hospital. He was the older brother and guardian to the children. The scene with Pistol and MC Seth was heart aching and very well written. 😢 Hope the next book I read in the author’s oeuvre has less kiddies and a lot more canoodling!
*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•`★*´¨✫*Family isn't always blood, it's the people who are there for us in our time of need. For Seth and Law, their coming together was fated. With Seth losing his best friend, Law's younger brother, he was left to raise five children who needed him. When Law finally arrived after being injured and with a military discharged, it was like the world turned on its axis. Suddenly, the men were raising a family together and learning all about being there for one another.
I had my moment of tears, and though I do read cowboy books very rarely, this B.A. title was a hard 5 star from the start. Highly recommended.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author through GRR.
This book is a pleasant read full of love, family, and good friends. Seth agrees to raise his best friend's four younger siblings when his friend dies of cancer. Month later, Law, the half-sibling of the kids shows up to spend time getting to know them. Seth and Law begin to hit it off and work well for the sake of the kids, but when obstacles hit, can they make it long-term? This book has a lot of flavor of Texas and New Mexico. There is an abundance of food talk and ranching work is thrown in. It's a fun read.
This author is truly growing on me. I love the journey to love but just love how her stories are abo. The every day things. How the MC’s are with just everyday things together. These stories often leave me not wanting to leave this world. I adored both Mc’s I enjoyed being a part of their story. I loved all of the kids and the chaos. The writing was amazing, the smexy was hawt, and the side characters rocked. Would love to see what happens to hunter and if he gets his own cowboy.
I enjoyed this read of a new-to-me author. She took what could have been a heavy, angsty drama, and turned it into a funny, better than reality, adventure. The characters are well developed, and each had their own unique personality. And although based upon tragedy(ies), the story is written well and flows nicely. My only real complaint is that though the dialogue throughout most of the story was smooth, the dirty talk did not do it for me at all.
Seth was older than his rodeo buddy and best friend, Pistol, when the unthinkable happened, and Seth was left to retire from the road to ranch life… and raise Pistol's five younger siblings. They have an older brother that's in the military, but due to circumstances, Seth doesn't think much of him. But, he has things well in hand with the kids and their routines; that is until he walks into his living room to find the kids talking to some really big stranger.
Law is out of the Army for good. Not by choice, but after being injured while deployed, he's not given much of a choice. He tried staying with his dad…but that just didn't go well. So, he decides to go see his siblings and the man he assumes was Pistol's guy. Lucky for him, Seth is a roll with the punches kind of guy, and decides to let an uninvited guest stay.
Eventually, the decision is made that Law is going to stick around for a while. With a bit of a misunderstanding, things become more confusing and much more difficult than necessary. The two become like the dynamic duo, taxiing the kids around, getting food on the table, and so on. But, life can't stay perfect forever.
Yet another tragedy hits this hard luck family, and the PTSD from the children's past experiences really comes through clearly. The emotions the author put into Law's character during this time seemed so realistic, and I really empathized with him at times. Friends show up to lend a helping hand, and eventually life starts to get back to their new normal. Seth and Law have been through their own battles in life, and have the scars to show it, but they have the rest of their lives to watch their family grow and live happily ever after.
* I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *
This is an amazing story with incredible characters and a wonderful storyline. Cowboy's Law is beautifully written, sweet, funny, sexy, emotional, heartbreakingly sad, full of hope, has sweet kids and a lovely setting. I love Seth and he is an amazing dad to the five kids he chose to care for after their big brother and his best friend passed away. Law is also amazing and no one knew why he missed his brothers funeral and why it took him so long to show up at the ranch. Once he and Seth start to work together parenting the kids they also have a bit of a misunderstanding that has Law holding back even though he is very drawn to Seth. After they actually talk about what is happening between them they both want to move forward with their relationship. They have a strong connection, smoking hot chemistry and they make a great team as they deal with all of the craziness that comes with raising five rambunctious kids and running two ranches. I love how caring and supportive they are with each other and the kids as well as how cute they are as a couple. No matter what life throws at them they are determined to do whatever it takes to be together. I also love the secondary characters as they add so much to this story and the ending is perfect. This book made me so happy and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us next.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I love this book. I really liked how you really felt like you were right there with the cowboys because of the way that Seth spoke. I thought that he did such a good job with his babies. They were definitely loved, and it was so obvious how much he loved those kids.
I really liked Law too. I saw how much he really wanted to be part of a family, and Seth just accepted Law and welcomed him right in. I loved watching Law bloom while he settled in and while all the kids started to accept him.
Fantastic story, and I'd love to see more of them.
I have been bragging I was going to start a gay cowboy romance reading marathon for week. When I asked my partner how many he thought I was read, his guess was twenty. I have found a way to read seventeen gay cowboy romances (meaning I already own seventeen gay cowboy romances or have ARCs of them). So just as a warning, gay cowboy romances may be the only thing I review for a little while. I couldn’t think of a better book than this one to start the marathon.
I have seen Tortuga around before. Her books were given in a Secret Santa Book Exchange group on Goodreads, but the books all seemed to be about shifters so I didn’t really dig. I really missed a treasure trove of gay cowboy romances. She has SO MANY. I had to talk myself out of buying them all before I had read at least one of her books.
This book is not your typical cowboy romance. The cowboy is not emotionally stunted, he is not starting the book injured and in need of care, he is not a hired hand on someone else’s ranch, he is not struggling to keep his parent’s ranch from going under. This time the cowboy is a retired rodeo cowboy and he is a dad of five due to cancer. So this man who has lived on the road for years and never really thought about kids suddenly has five kids. That is the prologue. Then chapter one starts eighteen months later. You miss all the bumps and bruises and immediately get to the cute. The kids already trust him, they have already had the funeral, the pain is more of a twinge than a screaming fit. I really liked this approach, it allowed the novel to stay fluffy despite how dark the circumstances were that set up the rodeo cowboy with the kids.
The drama and the conflict is all about healing. There are some assumptions, but no misunderstandings. Do you know how few romances don’t have massive misunderstandings as the main dramatic twist? SO FEW. The main focus was on healing from trauma and learning how to come home for the solider. The cowboy was learning how to be loved by someone as an equal and not just as someone to have sex with. They fell in love and they fell in love hard. They fell in love with each other and with the kids. There are even plots where the men learn that friends are supposed to support you and you just have to suck it up and let them. This friend plot sets up a triad novel and a few other sequels, so I will be watching.
There were two sex scenes so let me totally over analyze and be overly critical of them. The first one was a blowjob and a handjob. There was no condom for the blowjob. There was no discussion of STI risk. The second one was anal sex, but there was actual stretching before hand (from what I read it was four fingers which is quite a bit of a stretch) before penetration. There was lube and there was a condom. There was talk about how to do it, because of injuries. There was still no STI talk, but this was one of the best sex scenes in terms of realistic and safe that I have seen in a gay romance yet.
Apparently cowboy with kids is a bigger thing for me than I thought, because I could not put this book down. If you wanted a book like The House in the Cerulean Sea, but you wanted cowboys instead of magical creatures then this is the book for you. The awe factor is high in both and they both really highlight just how attractive good parenting is.
4.5 stars rated up~ Sooooo that was a heavy start for sure and it left me a bit unsettled. However, I understood it was to set the story off…and what a story!
This was exactly what I needed. It’s low angst with family, kindness, friends, bonding and love in different forms.
You have to love and respect Seth for what he put himself to do. He’s trying to make good on the promise to his young friend and taking care of his family for him. Giving them a home and loving care.
Throw in some Law in the mix and you definitely got a whole lot of family goodness. Sure Seth and Law need to warm up towards each other, which is logical because of the circumstances as mentioned in the blurb, but it is wonderful to read Law settling in to their family household.
Of course there are some things, like the way how Seth and Law kind of stumbled to love you’s etc that would have been nice to read a bit more personal involvement there but it didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of the story.
There is low angst but there is a shock happening that turns the family upside down. But it also brings out the best in Law and especially all their friends and community, which I absolutely loved
I noticed myself wanting to keep reading and see what else would happen and being a bit disappointed that where there is some talk about thanksgiving we didn’t get that at all in the story.
The story just finished with a quick epilogue and for me the ending therefore felt rushed. I so had wanted to read more there.
I do hope that author BA Tortuga, who is known for a great storytelling and writing style, treats us to a bit more in this world she created and will tell us what is going on with Law his army buddies who joined them for the holidays…and more…
Overall this is a wonderful, well written contemporary ranch story about found family, finding love and life in unexpected places which I definitely recommend if you like those kind of stories like me
I love BA Tortuga’s cowboy and kids stories. The warmth, the amazing feel of love and family comes flowing through every scene and situation the characters encounter.
Whether it’s one of awkwardness, anger, fear, humiliation ( families, remember), hilarity, pain, and love, the overwhelming atmosphere is that of people who deeply respect and love each other. No matter what the exact nature of their biological ties might be. It’s family at its finest.
When bull rider Seth Rodgers adopts the family of his best friend, Pistol McMann when he died of cancer, his life was forever changed. He became Uncle Seth , in fact, dad, to five kids, overnight. It’s a life he’s found he was made for and he loves more than life.
Seth. And everyone of those children are intricately crafted to feel as alive and realistic as they come. Seth, tiny, wiry, energetic, determined, is every inch the ex bull rider, now organized family man with ranches to run. You can see him, weary , napping in front of the tv so clearly.
And every kid, yep, you will know them too. Each with their fears, strengths, funny moments, and ability to see through the grownup fabrications that occasionally get thrown out there. Love each and every one.
Law McMann , ex Army, disabled vet trying to see where he’s got a future, is a character easy to connect with. As he’s trying to reconnect with civilian life, he’s also trying to find himself a spot back into a family he’s never really known.
This is an emotional story of loss, recovery, reconnection, family, and love.
And on every level, at every stage, the author brings those challenges and themes together with our characters in a heartwarming story that will leave you smiling and happy.
Yes, I throughly enjoyed this! And am recommending it.
This is a tale that tugs at one’s heart strings. A friend taking on his buddies ranch and siblings. Children who have already lost their parents and were in their brother’s care. And then there’s Law, their half-brother returning home from a stint in the military wounded in body and spirit. This could become a tearjerker but I could do without all the profanity that fouls the opening preview.
A single guy taking on 5 children and their adult half-brother.
So I nitpick. They moved into Seth’s home because it was bigger and on a single floor but I just read about Seth going downstairs.
Like most bull riders Seth’s a little feller but Law’s a huge lug and sixteen-year-old Wiley is already 6 inches taller.
The kids:
Wiley 16 Jordan--a girl Bethany--a reader Keira Dawn--these last two identical twins who are anything but.
With that gang to wrangle Seth may own two ranches but aside from doing office work he has cowboys to run herd on his animals though we read of his buying 5 buffalo: two pregnant cows, two with calves, and a bull.
The author feels it necessary to describe the pair’s acts of fellatio and sodomy and there are even reviewers who complain there isn’t enough of it. They also swear like troopers. No word on Wiley’s opinions on the matter, he has a girlfriend and he’s a saint to cohabit with four younger sisters. At least he has his own bathroom.
Oh wow, what a family! I love the connection and love that is clear between the kids and Seth, who adopted all five of them when his friend, Pistol, died, and then Law when he returns from serving in the army. There's a survivalist feel with how much the family go through yet carry on, leaning on and supporting each other through daily life and any problems that arise. Seth has really grown into the role of father figure and has a rhythm down for everything. It doesn't take long for Law to fit in after he arrives, surprising everyone as he didn't turn up for his Pistol's funeral 18 months earlier. Law and Seth settle into a routine and it doesn't take long for them to become friends as the family begin to trust that Law is there to stay. Things develop into more but there's very little talk of attraction/build etc. Their relationship really goes from strength to strength as they experience the risks of living on a ranch. The community spirit when something huge happens is great, really inspiring with how they pull together for everything from child care to food. Definitely a recommended read. I love the family and the MC's as they come together and build the best life they can for the for the kids. There are several side characters as well that I can absolutely imagine having their own stories in the future. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of Law and Seth. Seth is a rodeo cowboy who now owns his own ranch and when his best friend Pistol does, he is given custody of Pistol's 5 siblings. Seth is now raising the kids and running the ranch when Law shows up unexpectedly. Law is the oldest of Pistol's siblings and was raised by their father after their parents divorced. Law was in the military and was hurt. Law decided to go to the ranch to visit his younger siblings and heal from his injuries. Seth is unsure why Law is there and worries he is going to try and take the children from him. Law reassures Seth he is not going to take the kids, Law would like to stay and not only for the kids. Law really likes Seth and would like to be with him, but he doesn't know if Seth would be interested in him after being with his brother Pistol. When Seth tells Law he was only friends with Pistol, it lets them explore their feelings for each other. I really loved this love story. Seth and Law were so in love with each other. I love how they settled into a family with each other and the kids. Their friends were even more like family and everyone was welcomed. This was a really sweet romance with a lot of heat between them. Well done.
While I don't generally read books with kids (not my thing) this seemed to work. Seth is a rodeo rider and when his traveling partner, a young man's cancer comes back, he promises to take care of the man's 5 younger siblings and take over his ranch when he dies. Some time later the older brother Law shows up and Seth is a bit pissed thinking the soldier wasn't interested, but turns out he was badly injured and is only now able to get there. He's still recovering but Seth invites him to stay and they grow closer.
I confess it took me a while to get the kids straight, and maybe they were a bit too good but not overly so. It stressed me out though (all the activities and running around) and I know why I only had one. LOL There is a little drama around believing that Seth was his brother's lover not just friend, but it's quickly cleared up. The bigger drama surround the buffalo Seth wants to raise and he is injured badly.
So on the whole, a mostly angst free (relationship-wise) read. I've obviously not lived in NM or the south, so sometimes the way they speak catches me as odd, calling people Mr. Law or the mannerisms but I'm presuming it's really like that and it definitely doesn't just feel like sanitized language usage to appeal broadly.
What I liked: the chaos, the many children with quite different characters, the good neighbours and close friends who step in and give a hand without prompting, the tough cowboy life, the no - nonsense relationship between the two MCs, the honesty and kindness of all characters (there is not one bad or slightly irritating person in this book)
What I missed (I won’t call it disliked because you cannot dislike something that is not present): the romance, the heat (the level here does not exceed 2), the time spent to discover the other person, the introspective linked to the inevitable PTSD and its consequences. But overall,
Overall comment: This is the story of how a man first took in the underage brother and sisters of his dead best friend and then accepted and fell in love with their oldest brother and of a Army Captain who just found a new meaning for life in the arms of the “uncle” of his (step)siblings (I still have not a clear picture of the family relationship of Law with the five siblings and their dead older brother), without struggle, with very short-lived doubts. Enjoyable, but not enough focus on the building of the relationship between the two MCs.
ENG- so well well well… well I really like the romances of BA Tortuga. I like the Cow Boys, I like the Single Dads, and the two together, I melt.
As often, we must admit that the novels of BA Tortuga are super pleasant to read. It may not be the kind of novel that remains in the annals but we are sure to have a good time reading (and learning a lot of South Slang vocabulary)
I find that his novels are always pleasant and well paced. Once again the events are linked in a logical and coherent way and we have a great time reading.
I have a lot of characters in this novel. Let it be Seth and Law who are as endearing as each other. That the children, even if I had a little trouble knowing who was who at first, 5 children including 4 girls .. it was a bit complicated.
I also really liked the friends of Law and Seth and I would not be against a romance between three of them.
This novel is really nice. I had a great time reading, as is always the case with this author’s novels and I devoured it in a few hours.
Another flawless one for BA Tortuga who gives us a nice novel with endearing characters. Cowboys, soldiers, children … everything you need to have a great time.
