I've already downloaded the next three books in the series and pre-ordered the sixth! So well-written, with great characters, and I'm hooked.
Finished reading the second book of the Cricket series. My husband bought the first one of this series as a gift because he knows I love fantasy books with a romantic touch but he thought it would be a good idea to introduce me to something in an entirely different setting with non stereotypical and - most of all - non heterosexual relationships. I was a big fan of the first book and really liked this one as well.
It took me a bit longer to get into it but I think this has more to do with my rather busy working schedule. Most nights I started reading and fell asleep almost immediately. In a way that's a compliment. It means this book was very relaxing.
I enjoyed how Evie became a stronger version of herself during the story. In the beginning I thought she was a bit naive and really wanted to scream at her because of all the red flags Holly was giving her but after a while I was really rooting for her. I liked the character of Larkin as well and it was a lot of fun to read about all the characters of the previous book.
I loved this from beginning to end! It kept me on the edge of my seat and I ran the full gamut of emotions from laughter, joy and elation to tears and fear. I even exclaimed HOLY SHIT at one point and my husband came to check I was ok. Highly recommend.
I wanted to love this so much, and the story itself was good. There were just a staggering number of typos so the degree that I couldn't get into it at all. I just wanted to edit it so badly.
Take this book for what it is, steampunk sci-fi, and it's a fun little adventure with a little bit of romance. Don't look too hard at it or all the plot holes and nonsense starts to really pileup. It's a fun, guilty pleasure read that requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief to get through at times. Like, how did the crew of the Cricket find Larkin in prison and so quickly? How did something meant to track someone get used to predict jobs and lay traps? How does someone survive a slit throat or melted ribs? It was nice to see the Cricket crew again though. I wouldn't have minded some additional POVs to be honest.
The romance between the two MCs was nice. It took awhile for anything to happen, and it might as well have been behind closed doors for how swift and shallow the spicy scene was. Evie is too naive to be real, especially in the beginning of the book with Holly. Larkin is actually not bad. Together they do incredible, heroic things and then declare their love.
The drama and suspense in this was amazing. I couldn't put it down! It was cringey at times, but so good. Larkin is my favorite! Her sarcasm and bravado really won me over. I loved how the crew of The Cricket got tied in as well. On to the next one, but this might be my favorite! I guess I'll find out soon enough!
Like the first book, couldn't put it down. A surprise in every turn. Unexpected, exciting, enraging, beautiful story. I can't wait to read about the next adventures of the Cricket's crew!
