MY THOUGHTS:
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
I love Patrick McDonnell’s work, especially his ongoing Mutts comic strip. It is great to see his book about Earth-friendly tips using his well-known strip to encourage people to take better care of our planet. Topics like factory farming animals, dying bee populations, being kind to animals, deforestation, pollution, global warming and others, are wisely approached with messages laced with a bit of humor to keep such topics age appropriate.
I think this is one of my favorite Patrick McDonnell’s books not just because he addresses many environmental issues dear to my heart, issues I’ve incorporated into my new business for special adults, but because he targets children. Using his well-developed Mutt characters, he mixes humor with very serious issues to appeal to younger minds. In doing so, he manages to be clear and focused in his efforts.
The introduction at the beginning of the book is directed to young readers preparing them for the subject matter. He then brilliantly creates his comics taking apart each issue carefully so as not to overwhelm young minds. With a titch of humor and funny antics, he successfully gets his concerns across. Throughout the book, he uses quotes from Dr. Seuss, Pope Francis, Dr. Jane Goodall, Sai Baba, Albert Einstein, and others… McDonnell makes suggestions for how to keep things Green throughout the book. I especially love his artwork of the tiger and lion…
I highly recommend this book to all school libraries and even as a book to use for Earth Day; and, for teachers as a teaching aid when discussing issues about our planet. Although meant for children, this is such a great book, I would recommend it to adults as well. Is there really an age discrimination for topics like these
A perfect book for parents who wish to address these important issues that will affect their children and their future.
At the end is a brief summary about McDonnell and Goodall’s connection and a little about Dr. Goodall herself. The Mutt’s Manifesto is excellent and would make a great poster for classroom walls. What better way to conclude a book than to have McDonnell address his reader once again with a thoughtful message.
I have adored the Mutts comic strip ever since the first time that I read one of Patrick McDonnell’s sweet entries. He has a way of universalizing human experience through his animal characters.
In this collection, the focus is our earth and the environment. Mixed in with the comics are suggestions for things that we all can do for our planet. Mr. McD is not (too) preachy and he makes many good points. And, of course, readers will get to spend time with Mooch, Earl and all of their friends. I defy anyone not to smile at times as they dip into this book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC copy of this book. Read and reviewed by seven-year-old Amy. ‘Mutts Go Green’ is a graphic novel, and it’s very funny. In this book, I learned about how to keep the earth green and clean. It teaches us various ways to protect our environment. The comic strips are very attractive, and they will grab younger readers’ attention. I liked the front cover with green animals, too. I recommend this book to children five years and above. I give this book 5/5 stars because I’d fun reading this book.
Such a well-written book for kids, all about being kind to themselves, to the other and to their home; planet Earth. I loved how it is addressed so smartly towards the little ones without injecting fear but rather hope for a future where the collective and nature is being put in the centre rather than the self.

'Mutts Go Green: Earth-Friendly Tips and Comic Strips' by Patrick McDonnell is a special themed collection of comics featuring Mutt and his animal friends.
The comics in this collection are interspersed with essays and tips focusing on keeping the Earth kind, clean, wild and green. The comics are themed around these themes. The call to action is gentle throughout and the steps for the young readers are within the range of children.
I like this collection because the comics feel familiar to other works by this artist. The humor is fun and never lost at the expense of the message.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
A collection of Mutts Comics about taking care of the Earth and the people and creatures who live there.
There's definitely a purpose and a point McDonnell is trying to make with all of these comics. They aren't as much funny as meant to convey a point. Some are funny, but mostly it is encouraging and informing people on ways to care for the Earth and the animals. There are a few lists and stand alone pages of text about how to conserve energy, how to help endangered animals, how to help your local pet shelter, why do meatless Mondays (or go vegan or vegetarian), etc. The content is safe for all ages.
I love Mutts, and I try to live an earth-friendly life, so I was predisposed to like this book. I did, but the emphasis was on teaching, rather than Mutts being Mutts. So I was left pondering if kids who have already been raised with Green parents will find it appealing, because it will all be old hat, and thinking that kids who don't have Green parents will perhaps feel frustrated, or even worse, dismissive....Still, sound messages and cute critters!
*I received this book as an eARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing via Edelweiss. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
This collection of comic strips was made in celebration of Earth Day. Interspersed among the humorous strips are conservation messages and actions. This would make a perfect gift for a kid interested in conservation. This book is all about appreciating nature and the world around all of us. I give this book a 4/5.
The Mutts are a well known and loved comic about some mutts and how they see the world. In this they see a world in need of help to get healthy again. With lots of tips on what you can do to live greener.
Quick read with great points on the crisis the world is facing. Lots of good tips about living greener. A good book!
Mutts Go Green is a wonderful compilation of comics all about saving our planet. I love the pages filled with written messages to teach kids about different aspects of saving the earth. A great book to share with young minds to teach them the importance of taking care of our planet.
Celebrate Earth Day every day with this adorable collection of Mutts comics that focus on preserving our planet and making it greener for future generations. The book also features Earth friendly ideas and tips to help kids do their part. Reviewer #22
A collection of Mutts newspaper comics on the theme of Earth Day. The format requires some three panel comics be broken up to fit on the page, while other comics are presented sideways.
