unMind: A Graphic Guide to Self-Realization

Rate this book
All human pursuit is born out of a longing for peace and happiness. And there are times when we are happy, but we all know that it doesn’t last.

Why is happiness so elusive? Is there a way to be happy always?

If one asked this question to Sri Ramana Maharshi, he would say, “Yes, there is a way, but to get there you must first find out who you really are”.

Who am I?

We rarely ask ourselves this question and even if we do, we don’t look inward for the answer.
---------------------------------
Ramana Maharshi (1879 - 1950) and Ramesh Balsekar (1917-2009) are two of the greatest mystics of modern India. They taught the path of non-duality (or advaita) as a way to Self-realization. Their teachings didn’t advocate a complex practice or a long path to enlightenment, instead, they simply pointed out that we need a correct understanding of our identity in order to be happy.

unMind is a pure, succinct graphical retelling of some of the most powerful spiritual teachings that have emerged from India in the last century.

unMind is a graphic retelling of the powerful teachings of two great mystics of modern India - Ramana Maharshi (1879 - 1950) and Ramesh Balsekar (1917-2009). Sri Ramana and Ramesh taught the path of non-duality (or advaita) as a way to Self-realization.

Non-duality is a path of knowledge that urges us to enquire into the nature of our existence. According to advaita, turning inward to find our true identity is the path to enlightenment. Unlike other spiritual methods, the teachings of an advaita saint don't include elaborate practices or rituals, instead the focus is on asking who we truly are ('Who am I?') and realizing (via experience and knowlegde) the absolute truth that's instantly available to anyone who's willing to seek.

Ramana Maharshi is considered by many modern spiritual thinkers to be the greatest sage of the 20th century. However, not many people today know about him or his teachings. I realized that readers (and seekers) would find most of the books written on him to be archaic and inaccessible and that's how unMind was born. I believe bringing these spiritual insights in an accessible, visual format can be of great benefit to the serious seeker as well as those who are intrigued by mysticism and spirituality.

unMIND by Siddharth Tripathi is a graphic guide on self-realisation as it brings forth spiritual teachings. Uniquely, the book attempts to deliver the quintessential lesson of redefining one's identity to achieve peace and happiness. As the illustrations and dialogues come alive, the book does attain its purpose succinctly and successfully.

The book follows the teachings of Maharishi Ramana to emphasise how one can get started on their important spiritual journey. With the help of a variety of stories, the book makes a strong case for letting go and deeply cleansing one's mind to get rid of ego. This concept has left me brooding.

I read the book slowly and still finished it in no time. There's not much beating around the bush and I loved this about the book. I might reread it in future to understand it better.

If spirituality fascinates you, you might consider this one for a start.

Most of the concepts mentioned here have already been talked about in more popular books of the genre in more detail. However, unlike those books, the author here chooses to talk about their views in such a condescending manner that it was really quite off putting when reading it. The author constantly talks down to the reader, treating them as someone to dictate their own views on to as opposed to make a coherent argument to explain the authors point of view. If the book wasn't as short as it is, I wouldn't even be inclined to finish it.

Regarding the content, the author promotes a very passive lifestyle where there is no accountability or growth possible. I don't see any reason why I couldn't conclude from this book that the only way to truly be happy is to be in a coma most of our lives. Additionally, the philosophy in the book doesn't make much sense if you don't believe in god or some form of ulterior power in the universe.

There are also quite a few typos in the book. There are pages which are black glossy background with white text which is perfect fingerprint magnet. Shows how little effort was put in to make sure a good experience for the reader.

An honest creative work

This work is highly recommended for both alike, those who are either new to the teachings of Shri Ramana Maharshi or those who have much deeper understanding of Bhagwan's teaching.

Both the author and the illustrator have done a great creative work to put an apparently difficult teaching in multiple easy to understand narratives.

The chapters are properly sequenced and conclude well in the end.

Once again, a must read for everyone !

I enjoyed reading this graphic novel. It gave me lots to reflect upon. And there's some good tips to be mindful of our thoughts and actions.

However, I wish the font size and the illustrations weren't this congested.

I randomly came upon this book on Kindle and just started it out of curiosity. But before I knew it I was drawn by it and read it through to its end. Inspired by the teachings of Ramana Maharishi and the Advaita philosophy this is a nice little gateway to spirituality and encourages further reading and searching. Also very very pretty illustrations. I really enjoyed the graphic novel format.

This is first time that I actually finished reading a graphic novel and not just that, it is non-fiction and people find it difficult to understand.
The book would teach you lot of things and make sure, you read at least last chapter.

It was difficult to wrap my head around there's no I, instead of freeing it was rather distressing. But that's the point of reading such books and reading in general, to open your mind and challenge your worldview. Especially love how these difficult to digest concepts were conveyed through beautiful illustrations.

‘I’ am just a mere creature expressing my opinion about this book. ‘I’ might convince you or maybe not. ‘You’ may agree or maybe not.
.
Our lives revolve around the expression ‘I’. The book is here to convince you through illustrations that ‘I’ is just a thought and we need to go beyond it. Consciousness is all there is.
.
It is an innovative way to convey deep spiritual teachings in a comic form.
.
Though I am not seeking spirituality, I am curious to understand one’s true self. The book can act as a beginner’s guide, maybe help settle a curious mind.
.
However, it’s easier said than done. Trying to make sense of our existence and purpose is what most of us struggles with. Everyone’s goal is to be happy and prosperous, but not everyone is happy and prospering. We all are figuring it out... Maybe this is it, life as we know it or maybe not.. maybe there is something beyond us, waiting for us to unravel in order to understand ourselves and be truly happy. Maybe!
.
I recommend this book to restless and curious minds.

Siddhartha's brilliance lies in him simplifying complex topics and presenting them in a lucid and entertaining manner. This book is very handy for both people starting their Advaita journey as well as people who are followers of Advaita but need a quick refresher. Kalyani's illustrations give the book a life which could have never existed in plain words. Overall a great read

This is such an apt title for this book which takes you to a different dimension altogether – a dimension of self-realization which will also, help you introspect.

I love the cover page since it gives a lot of meaning in the very beginning itself. This book is a collection of thoughts by great saints Sri Ramana Maharishi and Sri Ramesh Balsekar. Though the content in this book would take just an hour or two to finish reading it, if you really wanted to grasp it, as it is, it would take ages.

This book is applicable for all ages irrespective of gender, nationality or race.

This book is divided into 4 parts which are:

1. The Grand Illusion

2. The Leap of Faith

3. A New Light and

4. Practices

These are further sub-divided into small concepts.

The pictorial illustration that was used compliments the content which gives you a clear picture of what Siddharth Tripathi was trying to convey. Like I mentioned earlier, kudos to the illustrator Kalyani S Narvane who did a really good job because some of the illustrations that were used were mind-boggling which pulls you towards the content even if you wanted to skip it(in unlikely cases).

As we all know, Saint Ramana Maharishi’s following across the globe is huge and his thoughts and sayings are well received by them I never had an opportunity to go through his teachings in the past though I was very much aware of his personality but thankfully I found this book which is power-packed with all that one would require in his/her life.

If you are looking for a book that helps you in guiding your life, this book would surely be on the list. Go for it, without giving a second thought.

This clear and concise guide uses graphics and story to make the self-realization teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi (and those influenced by him) approachable and even entertaining. Ramana Maharshi was a Jnana yogi who advocated a single-minded path of self-inquiry as a means of coming to grips with one’s life. This book does a spectacular job of conveying the method of self-realization and exploring the philosophical ideas that inform it.

For those unfamiliar with Jnana Yoga, there can be said to be three forms of yoga. Bhakti Yoga is the devotional form practiced by those who have an affinity for worship. Karma Yoga is associated with actions and a selfless works. This leaves Jnana Yoga, which is the studious branch of Yoga. Jnana yoga is widely considered to be the most difficult path because it requires constant self-investigation, and because one is working without a net in that one takes nothing on faith, but rather one must see for oneself. This makes Jnana Yoga the least appealing “flavor” of yoga, but if one is a scientifically-minded and studious person, it offers an option that one will find far preferable. While terms like “self-inquiry” and “self-realization” may sound pretty pie-in-the-sky, the approach is really quite grounded.

I found both the text explanations and the artwork to be incredibly effective in explaining the ideas behind self-inquiry and Jnana Yoga. The artwork combines comic strip style graphics with full-page stylized images. Not all the material features graphics, but the text-only pages are concise and easy to follow.

If you are looking for insight into Jnana Yoga, self-inquiry, self-realization, or just the way the mind works, generally, I’d highly recommend this book.

UnMIND a graphical guide and retelling of the spiritual teachings on finding out WHO YOU REALLY ARE is wonderfully written, illustrated and immensely discussed work on the specialisation of
SELF-REALIZATION.

When we talk of self first thing that came to mind is 'I' self-realization or knowing yourself attached with you and that is indirectly (I) always. The burden of that I. Why I am not enough? Why I can or can not do this? Am I the sole reason for all the bad consequences or so of good? This heavy humanness and getting yourself attached to anything and everything without reason is unjustified and irrelevant. Your body is a machine that will function anyhow according to genes, surroundings and necessities either you want it or not. As the author pointed out.

In longing for happiness humans, involuntarily get connected with the things that may fulfil their desires at the point in time. In finding temporary happiness and fulfilment they sometimes lose permanent peace and connectivity and become dependent on external stuff. This is where self-realization works.

This book talks of non-duality or Advaita as a way to self-realization. However, the author clearly says do not follow anything blindly make conscious decisions I add. He made enlightenment an easy way process indeed that comes as life goes on. He simply pointed out that we need a correct understanding of our identity to be happy.

All human pursuit is born out of a longing for happiness. Yet, this feeling is universally elusive and when attained, it is ephemeral.
Why is it so hard to find happiness? Is there a way to make it last?

This is a graphical representation of saints Sri Ramana Maharishi and Sri Ramesh Balsekar's spiritual philosophy of happiness, introspection and self-consciousness. These visual lessons help to capture the essence of each tale easily. You may finish reading the book in almost an hour, but to go deep and understand the value of the teachings is not that easy and quick. Though author tried his best to make it as simple as he can that I've already mentioned above.

Even the cover of the book is very thoughtful and creative. I particularly loved the illustrations of this book, they're very lively, expressive and fascinating. The result is a brilliantly original novel as profound as it is playful, as thoughtful as it is gripping.

This graphic book tries to answer the question of "I" through simple and easy anecdotes that most of us can identify with. The language is simple and there's wisdom in it for everyone. The graphics are very well done. Most importantly each chapter pushed me into doing a bit of introspection. I finished reading it in about two hours and felt rather lighter at the end of it :)

Loved the Teachings - Presented in a Way to Ease Understanding

“I” loved the way this book is presented.

Generally, philosophical or life-lesson books are lengthy, sometimes incomprehensible and bordering preachy. But not this one.

The graphical format and lucid writing make it easy to absorb and understand. The book is also minimalistic - nothing beyond what is required. And the teachings are priceless.

I liked it very much, and I have also ordered the physical copies for my family. I highly recommend this book. Please, go for it.

Delightful and fun. This did for me what I wanted Ryan's, " Ego is the enemy" to do for me. I couldn't finish Ryan and I couldn't stop devouring this in one go. I should have taken this one slower though. More imagination, drawing, activity and untangling.

Very light and refreshing comic.

unMined:

Unmind: A Graphic Guide to Self-Realization by Siddharth Tripathi is a unique and insightful book that explores the profound teachings of two great Indian mystics, Ramana Maharshi and Ramesh Balsekar. Through a blend of engaging illustrations and concise explanations, Tripathi masterfully distills the essence of their non-dualistic philosophy, offering readers a practical guide to self-realization.

The book begins by introducing the concept of non-duality, the idea that our true nature is inseparable from the ultimate reality. This fundamental insight forms the foundation of Ramana Maharshi and Balsekar's teachings, which emphasize the importance of recognizing and abiding in one's true self.

Tripathi skillfully guides readers through the intricacies of non-dual thought, addressing common misconceptions and dispelling the illusion of a separate self. The book delves into the nature of the mind, explaining how our thoughts and beliefs create the illusion of separation and perpetuate suffering.

Throughout the book, Tripathi emphasizes the importance of self-inquiry, a practice advocated by Ramana Maharshi as the direct path to self-realization. By turning one's attention inward and questioning the nature of the self, we can begin to shed the layers of conditioning that obscure our true nature.

The book also explores the role of surrender, a key concept in non-duality that involves accepting the present moment without judgment or resistance. By relinquishing our attachment to outcomes and surrendering to what is, we can experience a sense of peace and liberation.

Unmind stands out for its ability to convey complex spiritual concepts in a clear and accessible manner. The illustrations are not mere embellishments; they serve as powerful tools for understanding and internalizing the teachings. Each visual element is carefully crafted to reinforce the central message of the book.

The book's concise format makes it an ideal companion for seekers of self-knowledge. The bite-sized chunks of information allow for easy absorption and reflection, while the overall structure provides a cohesive journey through the teachings.

Whether you are a seasoned spiritual seeker or a newcomer to the path of self-realization, Unmind offers a valuable and transformative guide. Tripathi's masterful presentation of non-dualistic wisdom has the potential to awaken readers to their true nature and guide them towards a life of peace and liberation.

Life happens within you and without you, life happens as per God's will or a cosmic law. How and why things happen the way they do is beyond the human mind's comprehension. Acceptance is Peace.

-Siddharth Tripathi

In today's world we are all walking like a  lost person trying to search for our True Calling. Spending days thinking about how to actualize or remake a fulfilling career. Worried about why our dreams and relationships don't really work out in spite of our earnest attempts. Blaming and finding faults in ourselves.

In this book 'unMIND a graphic guide to Self-realization' the author and the illustrator have cleverly crafted a lucid guidebook to make an individual (seeking help*) completely realize their individual personality. The author has incorporated the teachings of Ramana Maharshi and Ramesh Balsekar about Non-duality (or advaita) i.e to stop identifying with the ego-sense or the 'I' as the author repeats, and get in touch with Consciousness.

I loved the stories where the author talked about 'working mind and thinking mind' and the one where the spiritual guru instead of giving an enlightened speech tells the person to accept himself as a taxi driver, they were insightful and like a slap on the face...ouch. I recommend reading the book in a regular rhythm/ one part a day (and not one chapter in a day) to gain proper concepts or it might feel confusing (you might even misinterpret).

The author has beautifully assembled spiritual teachings with scientific facts and provided a step by step manual for lasting happiness. The illustrations are above par creative and most importantly; understandable.

If somebody is looking for a one-stop coaching into Self-realization (or self-actualization) it would be worthy to invest in this book. Also I shall be hosting a giveaway for the book so keep an eye out😎.

Good in bits and pieces but too preachy

With all due respect to Ramana Maharishi, there are many parts of this book that did not resonate with me. The idea of ego and detachment is mentioned in many religious texts including the Bhagvad Gita. With time ideas should evolve and should be presented in a more simplified. To me this book came off as very preachy. The ideas are great but not very practical. In daily you can't achieve this level of disappointment. The idea of one consciousness is also not new. The merging of our own consciousness with one true consciousness is again a part and also the basis of various religious texts. However, the idea of renouncing the ego along with complete detachment is too far fetched. For an average person survival is difficult with these ideas. The book is good in bits and pieces but the ideas might not resonate with everyone.

The book talks about letting go of the ego that is qualified by the Word 'I'. The inner ego is the culmination of all the perceptions from our various senses and once one realizes this simple fact, it leads him to let go of the ego and embrace the inner consciousness. The good part about the book is that the artwork is simple, yet interesting and the descriptions of the chapters with the examples make things easy to follow. Just one of the self-help books I thought I would explore.
