The Guild Codex: Warped #1

Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors

Rate this book
My name is Kit Morris, and welcome to my warped life.

Picture the scene: Me, an average guy with psychic powers—not that my abilities are in any way average—just trying to scrape by in a harsh world. So maybe I've conned a few people, but did I really deserve to be thrown in MPD jail alongside magic-wielding serial killers?

According to Agent Lienna Shen, one-hundred-percent yes.

But her hardass attitude and “Arcana prodigy” status aren’t enough to bring down my former best friend, who slipped through the MPD’s fingers and is days away from unleashing untold horrors upon the city. Or he’s going to steal something. I don’t really know.

Whatever he’s up to, that’s why I’m sitting in an interrogation room with Lienna. And that’s why I just offered myself as her temporary new partner for the purposes of thwarting my ex-accomplice.

And that’s how I’m going to escape. I might even help with the case before I cut and run.

I am not sure it is the author’s intention or not, but the 1st word that comes to my head when I think about Annette Marie’s novels is “cute”. The characters are cute, the dialogues and the plot are the same. It gives me a pleasant feeling to listen to these books, but I doubt the Codex series will ever become a favorite. I will probably listen to a few more until the cuteness wears off.

The Guild Codex universe is divided in smaller series. I followed the recommended reading order so I read the 1st in the Spellbound series and now the 1st in the Codex one. This novel references what happened in the other one so I understand the advice.

Kit Morris is a special snowflake who landed himself in jail for doing things he shouldn’t have had. However, he gets a 2nd chance when his psychic talents are needed to track and apprehend a former friend /colleague who is planning to do something truly bad. Whatever that is. He is forced to reluctantly team up with the Agent Lienna Shen, at least until he gets a chance to escape custody.
As I said, light, fluffy and fun, leaning towards YA.

[ okay, so technically 5, but F the system this deserves so many more!!! ]
🌟⭐️🌟⭐️🌟

Well— Before reading this, I naturally had a sneaking suspicion that this book would be absolutely phenomenal, if the quality of the two other series in the Guild Codex Universe (Spellbound and Demonized), and the few (hilarious) glimpses of our newest protagonist, Kit Morris, that had been sprinkled within the two series, were anything to go by...

...and BOY, I could not have been more right! This was an absolute BLAST!

To say this was just a delight to read would be a crime! Delight doesn’t even begin to cover it! It was so, so, SO much more!

This truly is a book that you will NOT want to miss! There’s an ever- present sense of anticipation & excitement delivered through a plot filled with constant twists & turns... and had me on the edge of my seat the entire novel! Kit is constantly finding himself amidst trouble, and his charming & witty persona had me swooning and cracking up the whole way through! I admit I was a little unsure about how a male protagonist (as opposed to having a female main character, as the other two series do) would fit into the Guild Codex fray, but Kit more than holds his own as a lead, & in fact, he cast a spell on me from moment one! His sense of humor is ever-present, & is unapologetically himself, flaunting his love of great films, pop culture references, & a signature brand of adorable, yet incredibly sharp & witty sarcasm, any chance he gets.

Oh my GOODNESS, and I cannot express how giddy the craftily placed references to previous Guild Codex books made me!

Uh... and who knew Kit Morris was going to be so freakin’ swoon-worthy?! I near-melted, oh who am I kidding, I was a damn puddle on WAY more than one occasion !

Looks like I have found the newest addition to my list of Guild Codex crushes !

*swoons dramatically*

*fans self*

What?! He’s a witty, one of a kind, certified HUNK of a man, okay?! No shame whatsoever here for admitting that! I’d let him warp my mind any day of the week...
😳☺️😏

Annette Marie has done me in again, folks. As has Rob Jacobson! This debut with Annette was absolute perfection; they truly are a dynamic duo ! I loved that this felt so on brand for Marie, but I could definitely still sense Jacobson’s unique hand as well— their writing complements each other PERFECTLY and the result is a more perfect fit for the Guild Codex Universe than I could ever have dreamt of! This series is nothing short of a stroke of genius (true to form), and dazzles endlessly, & effortlessly at that— It exceeded expectations & more!

What a beyond impressive, SOLID new addition to the world of The Guild Codex that 100% fully lives up to the other novels in the franchise AND holds its own!

Other than that, my lips are sealed! 😉 Wouldn’t dream of spoiling any of this WONDERFUL work of genius for anyone.

Here’s lookin’ at you, kid! 😉

*swooning indefinitely*

Damn it... where’d I leave my fan?!

______________

AARRRCCCCCCCC! Yay! 😊

GAAHHHHHH I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT for this collab between Annette Marie & Rob Jacobsen!
ANOTHER SERIES in the GUILD CODEX UNIVERSE? Um, YES! To boot, it’s a novel from the perspective of Kit Morris; He’s mysterious, known for his pop culture references, & AND he’s an MPD Agent ?!

YES YES YES, PLEASE!

I have a huge suspicion that you will not want to miss this. I certainly cannot wait— from what I have seen through other books in the The Guild Codex Universe, Kit is absolutely hilarious, and SO fun; his one liners and pop culture references (especially at the most inappropriate times) drew me in from the very first time he was introduced ! I absolutely adore him & cannot say enough how excited I am for his first full-length novel debut! There is most certainly going to be trouble & thrills abound!

WOO! 😊💛😍

I LOVED Kit

He is so much fun, so witty, and looks like Chris Pine

I was never not going to like him

Warped gives us Kit Morris's story...you may remember his short story at the end of The Alchemist and an Amaretto. We finally get to find out exactly who Kit Morris is and how he fits into the whole Guild Codex universe (fun fact, this series is independent of Guild Codex so it can be read completely separately). However, there are several nods to the Guild Codex books sprinkled throughout the story, which of course made me go all fan-girl. I love reading about my favorite characters and places in other books =D

For those who have read the Guild Codex series, this book takes place immediately after the events of Three Mages and a Margarita. And it is just SO MUCH FUN. Kit is such a witty and enjoyable character that you can't help but fall for him a little. His mystic powers are incredible as well....probably my favorite type thus far. I'm really looking forward to reading more about Kit (and of course, Lienna!) in future books....and maybe a few more cameos? =D

This was an okay book considering the circumstances. By circumstances I mean that had this not been part of the bigger and intertwining story arc of the Guild Codex series by Annette Marie I would not have picked this up on my own. I love the idea of the intertwining stories the Guild Codex has going on but I really don't gravitate towards books with a male lead and that's where it started off on the wrong foot for me.

Kit was actually a very interesting character but his pop culture references were useless to me and didn't add much to the story. Out of every 10 references he made I got 2, maybe 3. Though I understand why he went back after all I can't help but think what if he hadn't and have his story end there and leave Tori, Robin, and the gang to solve whatever mess comes up. Those are just my wishful thoughts because I don't want to have to put myself through Book #2 of this spin-off series.

I didn't see the appeal that Lienna had. She's a rookie bad*ss with awesome spells she comes up with. Other than that she's mostly deadpan or maybe that was how the narrator made her seem to me. Considering I already wasn't a fan of hers this book didn't help much to change my opinion.

The ending was an interesting surprise! I appreciated the suspense that led to all the questions of how he was going to get out of the MPD situation this time. I'm glad things worked out and I'm interested to see how Kit's story intersects with the overall Guild Codex storyline.

The Audio Book:

The narrator pick could have been much, much worse so yay? This narrator didn't grate on my nerves but I've also heard better (that's just a personal annoyance of mine and shouldn't be taken into account). Due to the fact that I've been listening to the past books in the series, this narrator pronounced a few keywords to the universe of these books differently than the female narrator for past books and it did take me out of the story here and there.

Original Review 2022

I have only read one of the other books in the side series this accompanies but picked up the entire series when it went on sale not that long ago and I'm glad I did as it was a ton of fun hanging out with Kit.

We start the book as Kit is being interrogated after the fall of some nefarious guild collapse. It was a guild comprised of mostly lawyer so I don't think anyone was heartbroken over their loss. But Kit worked as said lawfirm and helped people get in the right mood with his magic. See he can mind warp and project to someone a better more comfortable setting or trick someone else's mind into seeing and believing things that aren't there. Kinda cool and way better than just being that weird kid like he as felt all of his life. Sure the guys he worked for weren't great people but they taught his what he was and introduced him into the world of magic.

Being in a bind isn't new to Kit but it is new working with the MPD and Lienna, a rookie with a rep, to find one of my former coworkers who might just be trying to amp up his magic for something not up on the up and up. He might help them out for now but is looking for anyway to get out of their clutches and start over. If it just weren't for sweet Lienna, who can treated to kill and maim kit in all kinds of creative ways that just sings to his pop culture spewing self in ways he can't quite explain to himself. So Kit has a choice, help Lienna and the MPD and possibly get locked up for life...or escape and let Lienna go after his super dangerous ex-coworker all on her own. What is a guy to do.

I had a lot of fun with Kit and was ready to jump into the next book right after this one finished. I actually finished all three published books before even making it back here to write a review. Good time, interesting story and a really fun character.

“Kit Morris.” .... “You are indeed a rare and fascinating mythic”
I couldn’t agree more.

It’s been years since I read a book from a Male only POV. I have to admit I quite enjoyed it! Did I also want to read from Lienna’s POV? Well yes but then I also want to read from Zylas POV in “Hunting Demons” too so that doesn’t mean this is lacking in any way. Is the male only perspective the reason behind the co-authorship perhaps?

This is another shoot off from the ever expanding Guild Codex world. The world itself has so much potential it’s not surprising the stories keep on coming. This one features a criminal, Kit who has been taken into custody after his guild was ousted by the Crow & Hammer. He has insider knowledge into his fellow guild mates plot to ”take over the world” and so ends up unwillingly helping the MPD agent Lienna in her investigation.

Cue adventures in the wonderful world of Mythica

Kits unique selling point is his magic, it’s pretty fun and makes for some entertaining reading. He has a love of films and there are more pop culture and film trivia references included here than you can shake a stick at.
A little more quick paced on the romance than Tori and perhaps not as exciting as Robin but it has potential!

Overall it’s a really entertaining and enjoyable read. Easy to read too, it’s one for those lazy Sundays when too many brain cells have been killed the night before with a glass too many.

It should be fun to see where it goes, given the ending the possibilities are endless. I expect every new release will be it’s own little “episode” maybe? All of which makes a nice change from the rest of the Guild Codex series.

but still

ALRIGHT FAM, we are so freaken ready!

---

Review August 27, 2020.

First, I highly recommend that you read the other Guide Codex books before this one. Sure it's a new book in a spinoff, but I still think there's a lot that can be gleamed by reading Demonized and Spellbound as those are finishing up in the new few installments.

Yeah, so I just finished Warped Minds and it. Was. Totally. Awesome! This is a spinoff from the Guild Codex series that takes on a new tone through our new unsuspecting hero, Kit Morris. Kit's voice is actually quite awesome and he's more than just likable, he's down right lovable. Annette and Rob did a phenomenal job giving us a starting point in which we delve into the MPD side of the universe which should, I suspect, result in a plethora of adventures our brains can barely start to conceive.

And now we ask, will we see the other C&H members appear in this book? What went on in Kit and Lienna's minds with that report after Zylas and Robin fought that demon? Will we go beyond Vancouver and adventure with our favorite Magipol duo?

I look forward to having all of these questions answered!

Brand new Guild Codex book! This time it's a male protagonist, with a slightly different perspective of the mythic world. Kit Morris is different than Tori and Robin and he's absolutely refreshing! The fun thing about Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors though, besides the non-stop action, fast paced story, and numerous laugh out loud moments is it's a great starting point for new readers. Especially if female leads aren't necessarily your thing. But check it out! If you're already neck deep into this universe (like me) the best part is catching all the little references to our favorite guild and characters! Character crossovers? ✔

Kit really speaks my language! So much sass and pop culture references for days! He highly values his freedom, but would choose to do what is right at his own expense. Love his powers, too! Kit's a hero you can root for from the very start!

Need more Warped, please!

It was so unbelievably good to be back in this world with some familiar and a whole lot of new characters! I adore Kit and his sense of humor and can not wait to get to know him better. This definitely will be a new favorite of mine, I can tell already.
It has everything I've loved from her other two series set in this world and it already feels like home. I can't wait for book two, it can't get here fast enough. This author is amazing and I can't recommend her books (especially the books in this world) enough!

This series continues to be fun to read. This book (Guild Codex Warped, #1) has a new MC, Kip who is able to do some truly remarkable things. Kip also has a mouth on him that gets him into trouble (also see Tori from the Spellbound series who has some of the same issues). It took over 1/2 of the book for me to warm up to Kip, but that was because the author lets you only peak into his former life a little at a time..... Bits and pieces between Kip's snarky exterior. Kip gets arrested by the MPD (the organization that governs & polices magical people) and the story centers on Kip wanting to balance doing the right thing with escaping. There is also a potential romance interest (this book is G rated) with MPD agent Sienna Shen.

If you like books about magicks this series will be something you should look into. Funny, clever and creative you will enjoy the time you spend with these characters.

More to come, I'm headed back to Spellbound series #3 next.

I missed this author, but...

Ok, so maybe I'm a bit disappointed of the start of this series. Maybe I expected more...

It was an ok read, nothing special really. Although yes, the plot is interesting (I like the detective plots), and there's some potential in the characters, but overall, it didn't really click for me.

Worth reading? If you're read the rest of the series, then yes. If not, then start with the previous books, they are better.

Im predictable in this regard: Kit is hot. There! I said it. Moving on.

I’m always kind of nervous when my favourite authors announce a new series, especially one that’s part of a bigger world they’ve created. I was a little wary when Kit’s series was announced and I read that introductory chapter at the end of one of the Spellbound books. But I’ve learned one thing after finishing this book.

Annette Marie does not disappoint.

Before I even get to anything else, can I just say how seamless that writing was? Warping Minds was written by both Annette Marie and Rob Jacobsen and they’re clearly a power duo already. Their writing flowed together so easily and had humour and action as all the other Guild Codex books. I can’t wait for more of this series by them!

I absolutely adored Kit! He was funny and while I may not have gotten most of his movie references, he’s quickly become one of my favourite characters from this world. There’s definitely a lot more than meets the eye with him and I’m so excited to find out more. Not to mention that his narration? Absolute chefs kiss. I loved reading from his point of view and highlighted—and outright laughed—at so many of the things he’d said and thought. Kit is easily one of the most fun characters I’ve read and I adored every bit of this book namely because of him.

Each of the series sort of highlights a different aspect of the Guild Codex world, so you’ve got Tori’s guild and Robin’s demon, and now we have MagiPol! This is another thing I wanna commend the authors on: this exploration. I love when worlds expand and we get to see things from different aspects so this book definitely brought on a new lens to the world for me and I LOVED that. It’s so different from the kinda thing Tori and Robin Do in their respected series. I’m really curious if they’re going to intersect at some point, or if we just get more cameos and Easter eggs throughout. It’s so fun when one pops up.

A big focus of this book was definitely Kit’s magic and not gonna lie, it sounds pretty damn cool. Paired with Lienna’s brand of magic, I’m especially interested in how these two will play things out. It’s so different from what the other series touched on, magic wise, so I’m very eye emoji over it.

Aaaaand I think that’s it from me! I’m so looking forward to the next book—in this series and this world overall lol. 4 stars!

Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors is the first in The Guild Codex: Warped series by Annette Marie. This is a spinoff of the main Guild Codex: Spellbound series. You can likely read this book without having read the other series first though you will miss out on a lot of fun nods and easter eggs that the authors have placed throughout Kit's tale.

The plot is a fairly simple one. Kit's in MPD jail after the take down of his rogue guild and will do anything to escape, even if that means pairing up with the MPD to help them find one of the dangerous rogues who escaped capture. Magical mayhem ensues.

Kit is an interesting character. He seems to be following the "rogue with a heart of gold" trope though he starts off completely self obsessed ass who is focused on how he can use everyone around him. His obsession with pop culture references was both funny and eye roll worthy. If you hate that kind of thing, you likely aren't going to enjoy this book. Kit's magic is fascinating and has a lot of potential for future installments. I hope the writers get creative. MPD Agent Lienna Shen works well enough as Kit's foil being the straight guy in their odd couple pairing, though she's entirely too trusting with a known criminal with unknown psychic powers.

The romance was of the terrible instalove variety. I don't mean where it's magically induced as a plot point, that part mostly worked, but earlier in the book. It did not make sense for

I listened to the audio book narrated by Iggy Toma. It took me a while to warm up to his narration style. A lot of his characters sounded the same, especially the female characters, though he did some voices that were pretty great. I definitely need better distinction between major characters since I tend to listen to audio books while doing other activities. Turning up the narration speed helped a little. I suspect I might have enjoyed this one more on my Kindle and plan to continue the series in that format.

*I have received an ARC of this book for an honest review*

I have read all of Annete's Marie books, and none have let me down. Now, I didn't know what to expect from a book co-authored with a guy, but I've got to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised.
The book flowed well, the characters were amazing, the plot thrilling. There isn't one thing I didn't like about this book. Although I did almost have a heart attack at some point, not gonna tell you what point though.
Annette Marie is one of the few consistent authors that delivers top notch writing with each of her books. They are always perfectly edited, not even a spelling mistake. The world building is fascinating and it makes you want to take residence in her head.
I can't wait for more, because this made me love Kit so much, and I'm a huge fan of Lienna and her penchant to kick ass and take names. I already ship them so bad.

This is the first story cowritten with Rob Jacobsen and told from a male point of view. I will be honest, I was a tad nervous and lowered my expectations. Holy magic balls… this was tight, hilarious and bloody brilliant.

Kit Morris is being held by the MPD on numerous charges. They arrested his guild for illegal use of magic. Agent Lienna Shen, the MPD’s youngest Abjuration sorceress and Captain Blythe her superior, are interrogating Kit when he negotiates a deal to help them capture an associate.

I liked Kit and found his backstory and intro to the magical world to be fascinating. He has a unique skill set and witty personality that I immediately liked. I am quite curious to discover what else our new friend can do.

Now Agent Lienna Shen is a magical prodigy working for the MPD and I loved her. She is snarky, tenacious, clever and a kickass mythic. We learned little about her in this first installment, but I found her to be trustworthy. I absolutely loved the dynamics of these two working together and watching trust build and sparks fly.

It will delight fans of the Guild World to know we cross paths with the members of the Crow and Hammer Guild.

Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors delivered a fun, addictive tale and I am eager to dive into more adventures in the Warped series. Whether you are new to the Guild Codex or a fan, you cannot go wrong adding this to your shelf.

Iggy Toma narrated and captured the voice of Kit perfectly. This was a departure from Cris Dukehart, but with a male POV it worked splendidly. It took me a bit to warm up to his female voices, but he became the voice of Lienna. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Buddy read with RHR. My opinion hasn't changed much on this one. It was an origin story with a lot of potential and mind screwing coming up. Shen felt a bit sidekick so will be interesting where their relationship goes and if she can keep a leash on him. Kit's power was cool and only got better by the end. It did feel like the whole thing was a set up just to have him under Blythe's thumb.

Compared to Robin and Tori, I didn’t enjoy this one as much. Tori had three guys, Robin had a demon and Kit had his own wit. Kit felt limited in what he could do, with both the ignorance of his own power and being a criminal on a leash. Saying that, his power has a lot of potential and when he was free to use it, the stuff he could do was awesome.

As a character he fell into the grey area, not minding what he did as long as he had a place to belong, which was pretty sad. The character I felt sorry for though was Maggie. Favourite part was where he spoke up for her. I hope someone tells her what Kit did.

An interesting start and the next one sounds like it’ll be chaotic. Will be interesting to see what Kit does on the right side of the law.

*read as an audiobook*

This was an alright way to pass the time. The climax felt a bit predictable in that typical Annette Marie way of everything coming down to the last second. And weirdly the ending gave me deja vu but I swear I’ve never read this before 🧐 anyway, I might listen to the rest of this series on audiobook eventually…

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

I wouldn't say that I was worried or even apprehensive when it came to this book. More like I was unsure. Whenever an author introduces a new aspect to their writing, like in the case of this book with a co-author, or when they introduce a new book or series there is always a little bit of an unsure feeling for the reader. We just don't know what to expect. We don't want our expectations dashed if the new thing doesn't live up to them. When it comes to this book, I shouldn't have been the least bit unsure because Annette Marie always comes through for me. I am happy to say that while this book certainly had a different feel to it, there wasn't anything that disappointed me.

First of all, I think that Annette and Rob's writing really complemented each other. Mostly because I couldn't specifically tell which author wrote which parts. Everything flowed nicely. Nothing was choppy or ever felt like I was reading something that was written by two different people. That said, it was also very obvious in an overall aspect that Rob added a certain flair to Kit's character's personality.

I really loved how this book is interconnected with Annette Marie's other Guild Codex series, Spellbound and Demonized. This book added a lot of things to the overall world of the Guild Codex. I loved getting a look from another perspective in this overall world. I loved getting a glimpse of how the MPD operates. I loved seeing other kinds of mythics and different mythic personalities.

Kit Morris's character is so easy to love. He is just the type of person that you want to be friends with. He is so easygoing and funny. I liked that even though he is at a point in his life where he is concerned about his own fate when it came to doing the right thing he was very noble. And then there is his mysterious magic. I am so excited for more Warped books so we can discover more about Kit's powers.

Overall, this was another incredible addition to the Guild Codex world. Annette Marie always slays me with her stories. I am looking forward to seeing what else Annette and Rob can come up with in future books of this series.

This book was awful. I'm surprised it was written by Annette Marie. I've enjoyed her books, especially her characters. The characters in this book aren't likable, fun or interesting to read. Kit is an ultra douche, who thinks too much of himself. He spouts off nonsense that he muses is hilarious. Lienna is not any better. She was angry most of the time, and lacked depth. I never got a clear sense of who she was other than an angry MIPo agent hell bent on catching bad guys. The plot meanders boringly for 75% of the book. Kit big surprise super power reveal reminded me of certain X-Men villain.

I won't read the other books in this spin-off. I will get cliff notes for whatever things ties to the other series.

*Really a 1 star book for me but added another cause I really like this world and set of series.

I've liked other books by this author, books that are set in this same world, but this one, was a bit meh...for me. Part if it was that I didn't like Kit, he came off as a woe is me, my crap doesn't stink, and odd combo. It seemed like with every person he met his first thought was how can I use them. And for most of the book it seemed like he was bumbling around from one thing to another. I may check out the next book, but it will be a make or break book in this series for me.

I knew Annette Marie would help me through my slumping mood! Her books are just so damn readable. This was a nice first book in a new Guild Codex universe series- though I must admit, it's possibly my least favorite of all.

Kit Morris is a great main character. For a supposed criminal, he's a sassy, geeky sweetheart with an incredible well of compassion. He's still new to the mythic world and is figuring out his abilities - and mind-warping is an ability I'm excited about, it sounds so cool. Lienna Shen also seems like a good character though I know very little about her for a final verdict.

What I'm not enthused about is them. Kit and Lienna as a possible future couple. It's already there, the blushing and attraction and silly situations and...I'm not in. I would be happy to watch them navigate the world and the upcoming shitstorms together as coworkers and new besties and I worry the romance aspect of this series will only get on my nerves. I guess I'm generally not a fan of reading a straight romance from the guy's POV (the book is written in first person -Kit's - POV)...

Otherwise, it was engaging and fast-paced and I'm ready to dive into the series. Already, I can't wait for Zak to appear 😳😳

So I kind adore Kit and his antihero vibe. He’s ridiculous but sweet in his own way, with questionable morals but, honestly, good reason to be the way he is. He takes literally nothing seriously and I’m looking forward to the whole dislike to love story that’s being promised in the rest of the series.

Spice: 0/5

Triggers: imprisonment, mentions of serial killing, violence, violence involving guns, death, hallucinations, discussion of past abuse, grief from death of loved one, poverty

BR with the #cakeeaters. So many of the RHR group love the Guild Codes Universe, and we decided to read all of the published books in this universe.

This was such a good spinn off. Future me needs to write a better review for sure.
I love Kit, who is for sure an Anti Hero. The Romance is slow burn, but the plot is fast. I loved the story.

By far the most mediocre book by Annette Marie I've read so far. I was less than delighted by "Lost Talismans and a Tequila" already but this was so much worse.
It could be that the co-author is the source of the mediocrity.
Or maybe this might be a perfect example of an author starting as an idealistic enthusiast and ending in writing as just a job to earn a living?
I really can't tell.

The magic of the main character is the worst piece of magic in a book by Annette Marie I've seen so far. The power of it might be one of the strongest in the entire series but never makes it much above average in practice because of the lack of imagination in using it and on top of it all the mc has the gall to mock others for their lack of imagination in applying his power. I was really tempted to dnf right there.
This is not to say the magic in the guild codex world is particularly well defined but usually, all the possibilities of how a particular kind of magic can be used are held in check by admittedly sometimes somewhat contrived limitations. Normally, the author thought about it. You can tell there went a lot of effort into preventing plot holes.
It's usually a prime example of how to do a soft magic system right.
Not this one. The new magic in this one is a dumpster fire.

I couldn't have written a less original plot if I tried. Gone are the complex and nuanced characters and motivations, say hello to shallow and onedimensional clichées. All of them.
Gone are political intrigue and varying and clashing personal interests between individuals and groups.
Here is a spoilery list of eye-rolls.

I just feel betrayed.
Usually, I am pretty guarded towards a new series because emotional investment really affects me.
If a book lets me down with careless and bad writing after I let myself be drawn into a world, it feels like the author trampled over my feelings. I lost this guardedness towards books with Annette Marie's name on it. No more. Not again.

Despite this scathing sounding review, it's not all that bad really.
It's on par with the average self-published UF novel but that's worlds away from what I expect from a book with Annette Marie's name on the cover.
