Trapped in a universe not his own, and the memory of a beautiful woman and circumstances beyond his control, Chris fights for the survival of Earth and the empire against a shadow government called the Syndicate of Free Worlds. Using an insidious drug that enslaves its victims through the threat of a terrible and unimaginable death, the Syndicate has enslaved government officials throughout the empire, sabotaging it at its very core. Forced to impersonate a member of the dreaded Tal-Shial, the empire's secret police, Chris learns to navigate this new and exciting world of technological marvels, superluminal travel, and alien worlds. Where do his loyalties lie, with the empire and the woman he desperately loves, or Earth and everything he has ever known? Are these two realities mutual exclusive or can he have both? With war seemingly inevitable, can Sergeant Chris Knight get to the bottom of this threat and win back the love of his life, or is the empire, and Earth along with it, doomed? Every soldier knows, the best form of defense is offence, so Chris uses all his knowledge and fighting skills to find the Syndicate and prevent this galactic menace from destroying everything he holds dear.
I really enjoyed the vast majority of this book, but a couple of the twists the author introduced into the story weren’t well thought through and when looked at more closely weren’t really plausible. He also introduced several new storylines and then just abandoned them. At one point I may have given this book five stars, however the little inconsistencies would have dropped this to four. The final annoyance was the ending to this book, or should that be a none ending as book ends almost mid-sentence.
So ... while the storyline continues to appeal to me, the really horrid grammar and punctuation gets annoying You would think that with 2 authors, it would not be so bad.
Good action sequences and a decent plot continue to be supported with acceptable character development. It’s the typical “good guys always win” style story, with quite a variety of aliens and general characters. Unfortunately this second book ends too soon, with too many questions unanswered.
Read the first 2 in the series back to back and loved every minute of it. The main character has similar traits to others in Robs other series and it continues to work well To be honest, the story is similar to so many, earth man gets taken to space by aliens of superior tech, yet still manages to find his own way and does well doing it
Another page Turner of a read with loads of action. I'm looking forward to the next installment. I hope the Author doesn't leave the readers hanging for more. The longer we are left hanging the less stars to suggest reading by others.
As good as the first in the series cannot wait require the third in series. This is as good as the others that Rob Buckman has written keep them coming.
Another real great read. I just hope Rob has another one or two books on the way in this series. The second book has quite a few cliff hangers at the end and a lot of unanswered ????s.
