It's No' Raining

Rate this book
Set over a period of fifty years, It’s No’ Raining follows the fortunes of two generations of the Grant family from the late Victorian era to the second World War. Detailing the rise of Albert and Ethel from workers on the Kinloch estate to owners, through the agency of fate and a little good fortune, of their own croft, it also follows the misadventures of their three sons, Cameron, Angus and Stuart. If to err is human, the Grants are surely the most human of us all. A pastiche of the works of Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Neil Gunn, the novel pays tribute to and preserves a bygone era of rural Scottish life while casting a modern eye over the period, creating a moving, sad and humorous tale.

I really enjoyed this. The writing is quite lyrical, but the language never takes over from the story which is engaging and interesting. Some of the dialogue is written with an accent (a bit like in Wuthering Heights) which might take a bit of getting used to if you not heard highlanders talking, but if you have, you can hear it in the writing.
