The JAK2 Cycle #2

Book of the Damned: A-E5L1-01-00

Rate this book
We know who Azzie is now.
We think we know what’s going on: the base, the study, why she pushes us away…
Turns out we don’t know anything.

~o~

My doctors, my foster family, my friends, even Mouse has been lying to me. Sasha, Luka, and Sev aren't even teenagers let alone high school students.
Everyone has an agenda, everyone wants something from me, and they all seem to think I'm not going to notice?
Luckily we've been planning for this since before anyone else stepped foot in Salem.
And nobody knows the secrets of this town anymore, no one but me.

~o0o~

"Book of the Damned" is the second book in the JAK2 series, and you will need to read "Book of the Dead" to understand what's going on. This is a reverse harem (why choose?) slow-burn romance taking place years after a pandemic. If the idea of one snarky, angry, damaged teenage girl involved with multiple 20-something men offends you, this is not the book for you.

Series Review (Book 1 and 2)

Rating: 4.5 rounded up to 5 for both books.

I picked this one up because it was suggested by RHR mods in the newsletter, so figured I would give it a try. I was a little hesitant at first since the heroine (Azzie) is supposed to be very sick, so was wondering how she was going to be doing anything exciting that was still believable due to her condition. But never fear, the whole thing is extremely well written and very believable.

The story is good and incorporates a lot of current events into it, building off of it to create an "apocalyptic" event and the post-apocalyptic world that follows (redundant, lol). But it starts in such a way that the world still seems whole, not broken, and then the layers get peeled back one by one until you see the full picture. It is masterfully done. The world is very compelling and built in a very believable way which frankly makes it pretty scary to read, since this COULD happen, and in some ways it IS happening. We don't have shambling zombies in this story, but we do have greedy politicians and systemic racism and xenophobia resulting in the death of many sectors of the population (sounds familiar?).

Azzie is awesome. She is so very smart, a little feminist in the making, and so kick-ass (not physically since she is sick). She is 3 steps ahead of everyone at all times, she is not afraid of putting her guys in their place and can do so extremely well. She is incredibly strong and wise beyond her years.

The guys are good, there is depth to their characters. The story gets told in multiple point of views so you get to know what they are thinking. They have a lot of learning and development to do, and they grow and change as the story develops. They are not interchangeable, but sometimes you have to go back to see whose point of view you are reading since there are 5 of them. They also act younger than their years sometimes, but I think that plays into the conflict of the story.

The one thing I had a "love-hate" relationship with is how descriptively verbose the story could get at times. Some times I loved it because it was much needed insight, background, and realism. Sometimes I hated it because it was a bit of a tangent and I just wanted to get back to the exciting part or the dialogue between the characters.

All in all a very well crafted story, worth the read, and I can't wait for the next one to come out!

So, I'm glad we got some answers to what's really going on, some info on who the guys are, and a little bit of the world outside the base. Also, dang does Azzie have so much emotional shit to deal with in this book!

But...
"Four years ago, the idea of a twenty-one year old man and a seventeen year old girl might have been considered immoral or creepy. Tai and Spider are twenty-four, and that age gap would’ve been unacceptable. But things have changed."

If you say so dystopian book....if you say so...

description

"Back to my original point before I get all gooey, you’re way too mature for your age."

description

However, despite my serious grievances about the age gap going on- I will look out for the next book b.c I want to know where the group is headed and how the heck they are going to be safe getting there.

Screaming, tantrums and more

I couldn't get through it, 74% and I was done with the scream feast and kid b.s. These ppl are dealing with a dangerous scenario and yet they can't get it together? I liked azzie in the first book, this one not so much, she went from strong to a huge brat with real bad childish anger issues and tantrums. How are you going to deal with these bad ppl if you can't even stop being a emotional hot mess every other page? And let's just say the whole read is pretty much azzie being all high and mighty brat, and the guys scrambling to please her or do what she wants, granted they don't always get it right but azzie is confusing with her constant hot and cold, who the hell knows what to do when she's screaming at you like ur an idiot? Over all bad direction.

This book picked up right after book 1 ended, and I’m so glad it did. We uncover a bit more of what’s happening, and we get too see how tough Azzie is.

Azzie continued to be a great fmc, she’s so smart and kick ass. Like book 1, some of her rage moments got annoying and a little over the top, but she was still too smart to pass up.

I continued liking the twins more than the triplets, even if they weren’t being as dumb as in book 1.

I miss Mouse, I can’t wait to find out her story.

I started book 3 right after this one so I can’t remember how it ended lol but a solid read!

I really am loving this series. The only reason I didn't finish this one right away was that I knew that there is a third book coming and I didn't want it to end and the wait begin. Things are really starting to move now that Azzie is now leaving. I'm curious to see how the Callis brothers will play into this. We haven't gotten to know them quite as well as the other five, but I'm holding out hope that they will be here for the long haul. True as Azzie said, Jason has always been nice to her and Ryan "I volunteer as tribute" is snarky and fun. I wish we were getting to know them as well as the others. Even if they are assholes.

DNF @ 86%. The plot is so unique and I desperately wanted to like it because I am obsessed with rh & dystopia, but this majorly dragged.

I ended up skimming most of it, as she is constantly repeating herself and having tantrums. I swear there is a tantrum in every chapter. It is marked as a slow burn, but it really really is … like the speed of an ice cube melting in Antarctica. There is a couple of short kisses in this book but that is it.

This book made Azzie kinda boring and my favourite part of the last book, the text messages, were super long and dragged out. They always went the same way they would talk for a bit, there would be a miscommunication and then the text would end. Then the guys in personal tried to fix it with her usually screaming at them.

Also wtf was with the mean girls hating her one second and then offer to 🤞🏻💦, where the f did that come from. In the scene she is explaining that she will murder them if they hurt her kinda boyfriend and then both mean girls start saying the are super attracted to her and listing stuff they want to do. The flip is sooooooooooo bizarre. It makes no sense. I think the author was trying to make her desirable, but it did not work at alllll.

Finishing with this series I think.

What the what?!!?

This book/series is great. It’s especially timely based on recent events, almost like a post-apocalyptic cautionary tale, but RH. What you think you know is not nearly scratching the surface. Amazing writing and world building; you feel like you are there with them. Their fears are your fears. Their sadness is your sadness. Fabulous read and I can’t wait to read subsequent books by this author!

Read other books by this author in the future: yes
MC: Azzie (Aesli Azrael Vokaty), Sasha, Sevastian, Luka (Hellspawn Triplets), Tai Chandler, Spider Chandler Jason Callis, Ryan Callis

This was a RHR recommendation turned into a RHR Buddy Read.

I actually did not want to read this at first, but then the first reviews of friends started to appear on my gr feed and after reading those and some other RHR buddys suggesting a BR I joined then. I actually ended up reading the first two books back to back, along with my RHR buddies.

At first I had trouble to get trough the first 50% of book 1. There is a lot of highschool stuff and bullying going on. But then it started to get interesting and I could not put it away.
There are a lot of secrets in this book, why a lot of twins and a triplet come to town? What’s the secret of the FMC? And I can’t say a lot about this, because it will just give away a lot of the good stuff in the book. But at the End of the book shocking things are revealed and both questions get answered. And the answers are heart breaking and reminded me of a discussion I had a few year back, which you can describe in one sentence: People will do a lot of things because they can and because they get a lot of money or power when they do it.

The second book was easier to read. I was hooked from the start and had trouble to put it down. More secrets are revealed and it was good book. But there are passages where the MCs text each other that get awfully long and sometimes boring.

I really really enjoy this series. Enough that I am working through them quickly and back to back which is unusual because I usually read 5 or 6 sometimes more books at a time based on how I'm feeling.
Despite this being a reverse harem situation there is all talk no smut but for very understandable reasons very believable well written and sensible reasons. But the tension is there.
I can't stop reading it and am sad I am half way through the series. I am starting book 3 now

When is the next book due out?!?

Totally want to read the next book now, but it's not out yet. Love the characters (at least Azzie and the guys and the few from the game store).

Where is Mouse? I hope she is at the rez or somewhere safe.

Love this series.

I want the sex damn it. I'm hooked on the story. I want to see the MC ride off into the sunset happy as can be with her men. I wouldn't normally go for a slow burn romance, but damn the author did this one right. Games, hot beefy men, MC that is all tormented, ingredients for an amazing series.

They get out right?! She saves the world and gets lots of dick in the process?

Hmm. All I'm going to say is that for someone who continously says they don't want to be treated like a child, she literally acts like a child. Completely immature and unreasonable on every single argument and disagreement, and I'm over it.

Just because you have your blood disorder doesn't give you license to be a jackass. You tell someone to follow your instructions exactly then get mad once they do it and act all "Woe, is me" and think about how you wished you'd have just died when you got sick, because what's the point? You LITERALLY told them to do EXACTLY as you said and give RADIO SILENCE.Or did you just not understand what that phrase meant when you used it?

Then she plays mental games, arguing and displaying anger when she's not actually angry and expecting people to KNOW that she's not actually angry. So the guys are psychic now? Good to know. I'll make an appointment for my palm reading. 😐

Also she has the NERVE to get mad and upset when they won't constantly give affirmations and other things when she's "fairly" mad. It's annoying. If someone is pissed off at me for presumably no good damn reason and yelling and going off at me why would you expect me to be like "Oh honey baby sugar pie I love you so much" No. Because at this point, I'm not professing my love for the first time to someone who is being selfish and argumentative for no good damn reason. All because someone was concerned about you having PTSD but didn't talk to you about it? He literally DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO. Y'all are essentially planning a prison break, you told him not to text or contact you, and the little 20 minutes he did see you was filled with other drama. When, pray tell, exactly was he supposed to bring up that he thinks you have PTSD because he recognizes the signs from HIS OWN PTSD and that of former friends and colleagues? She acts like he was planning on strapping her down to a chair and force feeding her meds. No. He literally only talked to his brother about thinking she has it and wanting to have a conversation WITH HER about it to HELP HER. Then she wants to act like the world is crashing down on her "omg you couldn't give me one single reason?!" No, because you're playing with people's emotions for no damn reason other than your own personal entertainment. **Cue breaking down crying** and making Tai feel like shit and he's all like omg I fucked up and didn't TRUST her. No she literally twisted YOUR trust in her and anyone should have expected the reaction that you gave to the bullshit thst she spewed. It's honestly ridiculous. THIS is who we are supposed to sympathize with? How? She's a hypocrite and she's selfish. "Well after all she's been through isn't she allowed to be selfish," you ask? No. Not to them. Yes she went through a lot BUT the Twins and Triplets did NOT do that to her. They had absolutely NO BEARING whatsoever on the things that happened to her throughout her life. You don't get to be selfish and treat people like crap who weren't the ones to fuck you over. Then you act like they are supposed to smile and laugh and ignore all the BS you spew just because you're sick, basically.
I'm sick of her crap honestly.

I'll probably continue reading the series because I love the guys, but Azzie is just filler at this point. I'm not reading for her, FMC or not. Hopefully she gets better in the next book but I don't see that happening honestly.

I don't know about everyone else but it is so much easier to delineate what you don't like about a book rather than what you do, and that sometimes can skew book reviews more than you mean to. For this second book in the series, I still enjoy the overall story/concept a lot but this installment had even less dialogue/actual scenes than book one (there is a LOT of inner monologue, exposition and telling vs. showing) and the female main character crossed the line from intelligent and tough to over-emotional and holier-than-thou (she was right on it in book one). Truly, the story/plot ideas told are very good and I wish I was reading that story actually shown, as it could be amazing. There is so much potential in the romantic relationships but again, hardly any relationship development, and they are all in love with each other after two books of barely any time spent together at all on page. I agree with the author's views on the current real-world pandemic, however at times some of the paragraphs about the in-book pandemic come off a little preachy, and even if i agree I don't necessarily want to read about it in my fictional escapes (though I totally get how hard it is to escape with how bad things have gotten and will likely continue to get). I still want to see what happens in the story down the line, but since only one more book is currently published I think I will take a break before reading it.

This is NOT a slow burn

A couple things, this is NOT a slow burn. Sure the harem hasn’t been intimate with our FMC yet, but honestly we have barely had any romantic interactions with them before they all proclaim their love. How do they love her? Why do they love her? She is super abrasive, and condescending bc of her knowledge of things. She seems to think she’s superior in how this place operates and maybe she is but the way she goes about it isn’t very nice.

The whole book is spent detailing her treatments, and all of that and dealing with the mean girls but again nothing of substance with the relationships really hit well.

Rachel her foster mom is not someone I like at all. I don’t get how she could behave and act the way she is toward Azzie especially knowing what we now know about Azzie.

This book also was molasses slow especially with a sense of urgency over their heads and they all lallygagged. They should have left before the end of the book. I dislike where the book ended bc they aren’t even out of the woods yet heh.

I don’t think I am going to continue with the series. The writing for me is too dry and there’s a ton of info that for me is irrelevant so I end up just skimming anyways.

Almost

Got political toward end. Hate that .first book didn't seem to lean that way liked it ....had to much gaming talk \ description in first and both had way to much inner thoughts ( pett peeve of mine) . First book was a solid 4 stars this one low 3 . Lot of wasted text talk and lost of rehashing same thing over and over . Same problems being thought about over and over and the explanation of how certain thing were and how they changed were long winded . Vcr/ DVD . Digital. Compress that stuff I don't need a wiki explanation 😒
Will read next book but will give another middling star if politics of today are mention in any negative way no matter what side it leans on. Don't like to be preached at in my fiction. This has a small bit in it but it soured it for me in the end .

💀 When the French Expatriate recs something, we at the Reverse Harem Revolution read it cause we have no control (or sense of self preservation) 💀

You know how Megara from "Hercules" is like ⬇ ?

Megara-Damsel

Well, Azzie is like that while also grabbing everyone by the balls and squeezing until she hears the *right* sweet sound, the one that says the idiots understand who is in charge and will not try to stomp around all Manly "My Ego Is Bruised" Man.

SO. GOOD.

I’ll be happy to report, I’m still obsessed with Azzie. She’s wise, smart, and kicka**. Still really like her guys, and really appreciate the fact that we have their POVs too. All the characters have a distinct “voice” so I’m really glad to see the guys aren’t interchangeable.

The romance is progressing at a slow burn, which is my jam! I love slow-burns, and since there is a bit of an age gap between the characters, I appreciate it all the more.

I’m really getting into the mystery of the series as well. There’s a lot of suspense here, and it just adds to make this a really well-rounded series. We got some answers from book 1, but of course we now have new questions. But I was hooked from the beginning.

I’m sure appreciative of the fact the cliffhanger isn’t too brutal here. I just started book 3, and I hope the cliffhanger there isn’t too bad since it’s the most recent of the series.

Book two...even better than the first (and that is an impressive feat)!

Who is this author? This can't possibly be her debut can it? This series is freaking phenomenal. I'm two books in at this point (dying for the 3rd, daily stalking will commence), and I'm LOVING this story, and frankly pretty grateful I stumbled upon it. This series checks so many boxes for me. The FMC is fierce, not just physically (though you have to give some serious props to her will and endurance), but mostly fierce in her morality, maturity and strategy. Azzie is the BOSS. Period. She somehow manages to come across both compassionate and resolute. She gives no F's when people try to create drama and she tolerates no B.S. when people step out of line. She is my favorite kind of h. The guys are uniquely written and well fleshed out so you are guaranteed to fall for some if not all of them. The character and world building is on point and frankly if there were grammatical errors I didn't catch any of them which allowed me to stay fully engaged in what was happening. There is a lot of intrigue, mystery and suspense in this second installment, the last third of the book is pretty intense (in a good way). I think my favorite thing about book 2nd book was some of Azzie's conversations with the guys. She is so sharp and so funny and so many steps ahead of everyone that it was a real treat to watch those conversations play out. I'm so darn impressed, I could go on but I'll leave it at saying there is a cliffhanger but not a terrible one, it's one you can totally live with till part three releases (thank you V.E.S for that bit of mercy). No need to hold off in starting books 1 and 2 because the cliffhanger will not kill you.

Meh

The pedals Azzie is on is starting to annoy the hell out of me. There is female empowerment and then there is writing a bitch for a character and making everyone else dumb as dirt on purpose.

I feel for the boys I really do, they can’t do or say anything without her climbing down their throats and telling them how overbearing and idiotic they are being. They are trying to understand where she is coming from and they are trying to help her but she’s just so horrible about it all.

At one point she finds out the twins, Spider and Tai, talked about the fact that she might have PTSD and she went ballistic on them. Spider had to grovel and reassure her and then she had a major fight with Tai about it. She was beyond angry they wouldn’t discuss it with her but my question is when would they have the time?

She almost killed herself and then she told them radio silence for the next 24 hours and after that they started running for their lives! When were they supposed to talk to her about it? And if at any point they would bring it up she’s have told them it’s none of their business and been a cow about it anyway.

There was so much pointless arguing between her and the boys about nothing other than the fact that she can’t respect them or even consider that they might have more than two braincells that I skipped through a lot of their conversations. She talks down to most of the people in the book, WE GET IT SHE A SUPER SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE! Right now however she’s also a cow with anger issues and a hearing problem.

I am probably reading the next book, I really like the guys and I’m hoping when they get outside she gets a wake up call and things get better. If not I’ll probably stop reading the series there.

Don’t spilt up the party

Another home run in the book series! I am so invested into these characters and the story. The weaving of real life events and pandemic craziness is masterful. It helps process the world we are living in as well. It’s often felt surreal and as if it was a movie, but these books allow you to live it and experience it in a way that makes sense.

Azzie is such an amazing character full of strength and vulnerabilities. We get to see that even more in this book and see her actually grow from it. She has had to keep people at a distance, but is seeing that she can trust people. I love the surprises that we get from the author. There is so much more going on and Azzie and Mouse really are brilliant.

The guys finally start to get their crap together and quit underestimating her. Honesty for them is such a high cost but it is the only currency she can trust. The game references and DnD quips are truly masterful. I felt that we got to know more about the characters on a deeper level. This book is more emotionally heavy but in a good way.

Again the layers, the skill of the chess play, and the execution of the plan are exceptional. I'm so anxious that something is going to go wrong though. Someone is going to tell our not be trusted. I'm looking forward to the next book. There isn't a cliffy like the previous book, but it does end at a pivotal point of the story. Her foster family... Wow. The viper twins were also a twist. I honestly can't say enough nice things about this book. I will be thinking on it for awhile as these characters stay with you. Multiple POVs. Mild steam, still slow burn, but it is igniting.

Another Day Well Spent

Soooo… I was up late last night reading Book of the Dead. I immediately had to download Book of the Damned and y’all know how it is…. Just one more chapter, a few more pages, get to a good stopping point. Well 3:30 am it was and I slept (barely) for about 4 hours until I absolutely had to wake up and resume where I left off! Didn’t even clock in to work today! Told them I needed a mental health day! LOL! What can I say!? More and more nefarious secrets are being revealed. Plans for a future are tentatively being made. And Azzie, as always is putting everyone’s needs, maybe not ahead of her own safety and security, but they are a close breathing down your neck second. I have never read anything by this author, but her writing is superb! I literally feel like I’m with Azzie and the guys on this journey. In two books there’s been like two typos, and they aren’t even really much of a hurdle to overcome, just a side note like well that’s weird. The storyline flows so effortlessly, you literally feel like you are there. I can picture Mouse’s cabin and the bunker clear as day. Since you’re reading this review you have likely read the first one, but I’m busting at the seams to know WTH happened to Mouse!? Did she escape? Has she been captured? Do we need to plot a coup to rescue her!? Ugh, I’m too impatient! Off to the next book!! Happy reading friends!

Amazing read!!

I enjoyed everything about this book but what I loved the most is a truly strong independent minded lead female character in a way not often attributed in this genre. She took charge of her narrative and made the decision that impacted her life. Next was the parallels to our current reality that note about the post office had me thinking he'll yeah! I only hope our USPS becomes so fortified especially if we need it as much as it seems like we will to practice our right and maintain democracy. Also noted was the Navajo nation now it's real live relevance and how their communities are really being lavished and the systematic oppression they've faced for a long time is something that unfortunately does not get enough attention by our media and I think you do a service by spreading that knowledge in a staple part of culture. Your an amazing author an I will be reading as many of your books as I can. The way this book came together with the back from was brilliance and to God be the glory that your book will actually help other awareness that will contribute to making this world a better place. Americans have been in a privileged bubble for a long time and a lot of people are being awakened to the reality that what they have is a privileged that will be hard fought to keep and that the reality for others in this country is far worse.
