The only witch in the world? It might feel like it to Stormy Morgan but she knows better.
Twenty minutes away, in a town called Hemlock Cove, witches have taken over. Sure, the bulk of the town is made up of frauds looking to shore up their tourism industry, but there are real witches, too. There’s a family, last name of Winchester, and they’re notorious. Stormy wants to meet them but she has a myriad of problems darkening her doorstep.
The first is Hunter Ryan, her childhood love who is back in her life and ready to take the next step, which is formal dating … just as soon as he’s given proper respect to his previous relationship. While Stormy is waiting for that to happen, she runs to the aid of customer at the family diner when the older woman collapses as she’s leaving after breakfast. Before Stormy can offer even a dollop of help, though, the woman is dead and there are more questions than answers.
When the cause of death is determined to be poison, Stormy and Hunter have to follow a tangled trail of clues… and it leads them straight to the senior center. It seems the victim was a regular visitor there, and one of the better euchre players at the lauded weekly tournaments. Is that a motive for murder, though?
Stormy has her hands full with out-of-control euchre madness, magic she is trying to control, and hormones that are threatening to run rampant. When she finally makes it to Hemlock Cove, her nerves threaten to get the best of her.
She needs help. This is a world she doesn’t understand. The truth has to come out, but is she ready? It might not matter because a murderer has marked Stormy for death. It’s up to her and her motley crew of friends and family to save the day … if they can all come together as a team.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
Caffeinated Calamity is Book 2 in the Two Broomsticks Gas & Grill Witch Cozy Series.
I love Stormy! She is a fantastic protagonistic. She is coming into more of her witchy powers and a trip to Hemlock Cove only 20 minutes away is in order.
There is some crazy madness and murder going on with a Euchre tournament at the Senior Center and Stormy and her grandmother have been targeted.
Meanwhile, the relationship between Stormy and Hunter is starting to heat up and I love the friendship between Sebastian and Stormy.
Its always so fun to visit Hemlock Cove, one of my favorite series.
Fun and light. Not a masterpiece in terms of cosy mysteries, but entertaining enough.
This book is clearly a crossover from some other series I'm unfamiliar with and I found it a bit annoying. I wanted more focus on Stormy and Hunter, less on the huge family of witches in the next town over. They just made the book feel awfully crowded and crammed.
The kitten was pushed to the sideline a bit too much too. Poor thing doesn't even have a name yet. Geez.
All in all, I preferred the first book, but this one was still nice and I will probably give book 3 a go when it's out.
Yes, I realize my initial comment is rather bland, but then so was the book. There just wasn’t anything that jumped out in the book. It was all rather boring and staid and incredibly predictable. That’s saying something when the plot involved poisoning people. Nothing sounded real or well planned out. The concept of why these individuals were poisoned was hackneyed and trite.
Look at that, I got staid, hackneyed and trite in one paragraph. Beat that Ms Lee for using melancholy. Sorry, that was probably undeserved, because too many authors shy away from any fun literary words and she does at least throw them in occasionally. I even learned from her writing that “You’ve got another think/thing coming” are both correct, depending on locale and past historical usages.
At least discussing that gave me something to write about. This story didn’t offer much in way of review. It just was. Every instance where it seemed as something was building, it falls flat just as the crescendo should occur. Such as the buildup to Stormy meeting the Winchesters and even being invited to a full moon ceremony. This was her first truly magical initiation into the witchy world, and yet they didn’t discuss calling the four corners, the blessing or any magical experiences other than dancing on the bluff. Shouldn’t she have at least seen a few sparks fly in the wind.
Then at the senior center when it all comes to a head, it is a let down to find out not only the reason behind the deaths, but that it’s no surprise why. In fact it’s more of a sad commentary on life to think that someone would even consider doing this. I truly hope that sadness is left for the book and doesn’t actually happen in small town America. Finally when she does her big reveal to Hunter, even it’s a letdown. He already surmised her secret. Maybe it would have been better to end it with them sleeping together and he finds her floating above the bed when they wake. At least then he could have said while smiling, “Think you might have something to share?”. That might have been a bit ridiculous, but at least it would have been eventful.
If the Winchester family is going to be brought in to this series, I hope it’s done better in the future. It makes sense there would be overlap, they live so close together, and Stormy may need other witches in the future to handle some things. Big magic should require multiple witches not to mention she needs training, if the author suddenly changes that and makes Stormy able to do things so easily it doesn’t reflect well on her literary universe.
Overall, this was just a flat and boring chapter of the series. Even if you combined the first two books plots and story, it wouldn’t have been enough. Maybe once the great-grandmother is introduced there will be something to be made with the story and add some much needed depth, as it’s been hinted at with the Hellcat comment. If things don’t change to improve the development of its story and characters, this series will be a no-go for me in the future. It needs substance.
On a completely separate note to the author, fix the Sebastian character. You started out great with him, he may or not be gay. Big deal either way. Then suddenly in this book you threw him out there as one of the biggest gay male stereotypes. He does costumes, wears black berets when spying, pink satin jackets that he just whips up overnight, and says “Girlfriend”. I have no problem with a man being this stereotype but that isn’t how you initially wrote about him. He has also mentioned he doesn’t want the town to think of him as different either, as he does have a business to run that impacts the entire town. There will, of course, always be a few people in the town that will have an issue, it’s a small town after all. But couldn’t he just as easily be a guy who liked fishing, fixed cars for fun, or ran trivia game nights with his friends. It’s been said that Hunter likes to fish, and he and Sebastian are friends. Wouldn’t that have been something to do together. Every gay male in any of your series tends to the stereotypical. Yes, there are those stereotypes, but there are lots of men and women, who don’t fit those roles as well. Break your ridiculous mold and make the man a human being first, with varied interests who just happens to date men. These are late 20, early 30 aged characters. The stereotypical roles you are dispensing are from an earlier generational idea of what a gay man is like. If you can make your straight males use deodorant, cologne, groom themselves and actually show their emotions, as many men do now, then why do your gay males need to be any different with an exception of who they sleep with.
Sadly, from your past writing, I expect Sebastian will travel to New Orleans, have his own parade. Where you will dress him in a rainbow & glittery jock with leather harness shaking his uncovered behind to the music of the Quarter. Please! Prove me wrong!!
I'm done with this series. I don't like a single character in the books. The mystery is buried in the repartee which is not funny and in Stormy's insecurities and Sebastian's (her bestest bestie??).
Sebastian acts like an 8-year-old: I'm not your friend anymore; you didn't invite me to the bonfire (although he had attended on his own for years). I don't like you; you didn't invite me to a dinner you were invited to. I'm not the sidekick, I'm the main person! Everybody loves me cause I'm awesome. I can't tell anyone I'm gay because then no one will like me. The guy is in his early 30's. The gay "mannerisms" are stunningly stereotypical.
Stormy and Hunter are "not dating" because he believes it a sign of respect to his previous girlfriend to wait two weeks. However, he comes to her house every night and brings dinner and the whole town discusses it continually. He is not concerned with town gossip but he's trying to not hurt his prior girlfriend. Stormy understands his feelings but every time he doesn't stay over, or kiss her, she obsesses that he has changed his mind or he doesn't love her. He is constantly reminding her he was devastated when she left him 10 years ago.
Stormy's family is a wreck; no one has a nice thing to say to, or about, anyone. She doesn't understand why a poisoning in her grandfather's diner will impact customers coming in. She investigates murders with her boyfriend's (Hunter) blessing although he is a cop and she has no connection to the person(s) murdered.
The grandmother, mother and cousins crossed the line of snarky but cute into flat out unlikable. I almost couldn't finish the book. Lee/Hart has come close to this line before, but for the first time, it was crossed. Debatable if I'll continue with this series.
Well i'm still in love with this. The characters are funny and you can just imagine whats going to go wrong next. i love how close the family is and how they drive each other crazy. I like the small look at the witches and they seem just as crazy as her family so I think she'll fit in well with them. that part where she burnt the eyebrows off was funny. I also liked the fireworks bit. It's going to be fun to watch her try to control her powers.
Nice fast food. The characters are funny and I love how close the families are and how they all drive each other crazy. And I love Stormy's grandfather and of course Aunt Tilly, such a funny pair of strong-willed elderly people.
Overall, the writing is cute and I'm enjoying the characters and continuation of the story and what's going on with Stormy. Book two actually opens up with a Prologue set in Hemlock Cove, a town over from Shadow Hills with Bay and Thistle Winchester. From reading other reviews, of the first book and this book I had already picked up that this was a series set in a much bigger universe from her other series. This prologue, for those who haven't read any of her other series, pretty much confirms it. I did a little digging to link that the Winchesters are from her 'Wicked Witches of the Midwest' books, of which there are currently nineteen out. Something I might tackle later because I can't say I'm not interested in potentially reading Bay's story from the beginning.
Spoilers weaved in and out of my review ahead, so read at your discretion.
I did like this book a little more than the first, though I think part of it is because while it's frustrating Stormy, Hunter is trying to actually do the right thing by not just jumping into a relationship with Stormy so soon after his breakup with Monica. Stormy as a whole is worried that it's because she's not sure if it's due to Hunter having second thoughts, but he does confirm it's because he knows he was in the wrong with how he treated Monica and wanted to give it some time before the relationship was more or less rubbed into Monica's face.
While the town might still be gossiping about them, I actually appreciate him trying to do the right thing and not give the town MORE to gossip about or throw in her face.
As well, Stormy is starting to come to terms with her being a witch, with her friend Sebastian dragging her off to Hemlock Cove to the Winchester's store in an effort to get her to kind of feel out the family because it's a well-known not-secret that they are in fact witches.
The speed at which the murders are happening in town since Stormy came back is a little concerning though. We're only a few weeks after the conclusion of the first book, where someone was murdered behind the family restaurant when one drops dead as she's leaving from breakfast - the ultimate conclusion for death being poisoned. So again, another murder. (And I'm already partway into book three, which takes place only a few weeks after this one, and again, a new murder) So we're talking like, three murders in the span of like a month and a half - two months? That's a LOT, especially for a small town. It asks for a lot of suspension of disbelief - it's easier to believe the speed of murders were it in a larger town, because more people, but in a town where everyone knows everyone and the largest gossip outside of the murders is that Hunter's truck was parked behind the restaurant so everyone knows he spent the night at Stormy's apartment - it takes a decent amount of disbelief for 'reading reasons' to wonder why people haven't fleed this town ages ago if this is how fast people are dropping.
The book had a similar feel of book one, where we're focusing on Stormy and her magic, or Stormy and Hunter a lot and sometimes it does feel like the murder and the mystery of it get pushed back a little for the other things. I like that magic is starting to take a bigger roll in the books as Stormy is learning about it and of it, though I also feel like if there was a little more time between each book (and murder) there's some hand waving, Stormy has been learning and so we can speed up the rate at which she's learning to use it a little more. However, I do feel like we had a little more sleuthing about the murder and into why it happened than the first book, so the conclusion of the who, how, and why came a little more in flow with the rest of the book.
I'd definitely still recommend it if you're looking for a cute, cozy mystery to read with a hint of paranormal/witchy flare. And I will say with the cameos from the Winchester family, I am curious to read their story from their perspective - or well, Bay's perspective mostly. Their appearance makes me wish I knew of them before picking up this book, and you can tell there's a large family dynamic going on among them, but at the same time, I think they were handled well in that I don't feel that I was missing anything from not reading their books that affected how they interacted with Stormy and her story as a whole.
This was an enjoyable book with an interesting plot and some pretty wild characters. I enjoyed it.

Extraordinarily entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series
An extraordinarily entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. An outstanding cast of characters and a very entertaining storyline. Stormy Morgan a small-town girl it went away to college and made it big wrote her first novel and got a book deal it made a lot of money on her first book. Then she wrote her second book and it bombed and the publisher dumped her like yesterday‘s trash. After a few years of traveling around trying to figure out a new story a new way of writing her money runs out and she ends up going back home to her small town. She ends up back working for her grandfather‘s diner and living in a small apartment above the diner. She has no money in life has dumped her out at the bottom again. After her and her cousin plays with a Ouija board something happens and things begin changing. Follow along and see what happens as she discovers she may have inherited a family trait of being a witch. Her great grandmother is the one Who started the café called the two broomsticks many years ago. Her grandfather now runs it and her great grandmother is moved away to Florida. Her grandmother is supposed to be coming back soon to visit and stormy will have many questions for her. She has gotten some of her answers by meeting a few which is from a nearby town. Read on to see what happens and enjoy. Always a fun bit of Snark and attitude in her stories. I find them hilarious and entertaining.
Stormy Morgan's life seems to be settling a bit back in Shadow Hills. She & Hunter are hanging out but not dating until Hunter's self imposed moratorium is up. Not that it keeps the small town from gossiping & speculating. However, when one of her senior citizen regulars exits the diner after breakfast & dies suddenly in Stormy's arms, it becomes a case of murder. The motive is unclear until Stormy & Sebastian visit the senior center & discover the frequent cutthroat euchre tournaments held there. Besides the murder, hanging over Stormy's head is her growing fear of telling Hunter she's a witch. Will that fact be the last straw for Hunter? There's a series crossover section where Sebastian & Stormy visit Hemlock Cove. There she runs into the Winchester cousins, b gets invited to dinner there with Hunter & realises that they know her secret & can help. But when she's roped into being bait for the tournament & someone else drinks her drink & also is poisoned, Stormy needs to find out fast who has it in for her & why. A mystery with a somewhat surprising ending. Of course, there's the family snark to enjoy as no one in this family backs down especially when it comes to euchre.
Who knew snark could make up for the absence of steam!
I don't know the exact definition of "cozy mystery," or if "cozy" only applies to mysteries, but so far, it looks like a cozy mystery is one where there are few--if any--swear words and no (as in zip, zilch, nada) steamy stuff.
There will be no Kindle melting reading these books. But you know what? I'm OK with it. At least with this series... so far.
If you read the first book--and you really should read them in order--you know that Stormy Morgan just found out that she's a witch. She doesn't really know how it happened and she doesn't know how to control it yet. In this book, there is more mysterious death in the small town of Shadow Hills, MI and somehow Stormy is in the middle of it, again.
The story itself is good. There are times when I don't like Stormy...or her mother...or her grandmother. But I absolutely LOVE her grandfather! His snark is legendary and I'm here for it!
I like the way the series seems to be developing. It's fun and funny...and I actually don't miss the overly descriptive steamy stuff (although a tiny bit more heat with Stormy and Hunter wouldn't be unwelcome 😇.)
Stormy is a very likable lead; it's easy to engage with her and to empathize with her career, romantic, and personal identity issues, especially since her family seem to be pretty worthless as a support system. There is not a single redeeming personality in the Archer/Morgan clan for Stormy so far. Fortunately, she has a very able comic foil and awesome bestie in Sebastian. I appreciate that he's not an obnoxiously over-the-top caricature, and it should be satisfying to watch the pair becoming confident in themselves. It will be especially enjoyable if the Winchesters make frequent cameos to aid in this endeavor! Hunter is a fine character with an unfortunate past that he has managed to rise above, I like his personal connection to Chief Terry, and I REALLY like his mature take on developing a relationship with Stormy. The deaths and attendant investigation feels superficial, but the motive and the guilty are a big surprise. I look forward to further revelations from Great- Grandma Helen, and just where is that board... and what could make it necessary to re-forge old bonds?
I was looking for a simple, cozy read and have read several of Amanda M. Lee's books in the last year or so - I stumbled upon A Two Broomsticks Gas & Grill Witch Cozy Mystery #1. I immediately fell in love with the characters and that is the most important thing for me - it did not disppoint.
I love the twists and turns of the mystery seeing it unfold, watching how Stormy is dealing with moving back home & working in the family restaurant - mostly with her interactions with Grandfather. I'm enjoying her fun relationship with Sebastian, watching her with old schoolmates, her growing powers, and the anticipation of her and Hunter's reunion.
It even spurned me onto reading how to play Eucrhe! I tried to explain it to my Mom last night while playing 500 Rummy & Honeymoon Whist - she looked scared.
I was disappointed to learn that I'll have to wait a couple of months before I can catch up with Stormy, Hunter & the gang.
I am still not 100% sold on this new series as it seems like So many of the author's other books. Why do so many character have a gay best friend? The stereotype is such cheap trope...and so early 2000s. Why can't the lead be gay? Why is it always a man? And why is each gay bff the same caricature? Now, I'll take more Winchester witches and aunt Tilly any day. It helped me get into this book more. I liked the mystery...But didn't another book have a death at a diner? As I adore most of this author's books including under her pen name(except Ivy books, snore) I give this novel a 4. I am hoping as time goes on these books find their unique path.
I'm loving this series. In this book Stormy meets the Winchesters. Loved their interaction. Although stormy remains confused and scared of what's happening to her, she decides to get some answers. The mystery in this book is centres on the death of an elderly woman in the diner which is deemed suspicious. Stormy decides to investigate. Stormy and Hunter have decided to wait 2 weeks before going on an official date but it's easier said than done. Will they last the full 2 weeks or will they succumb to their desires? Stormy decides to tell Hunter about her new abilities before embarking on a romantic relationship. She worries about his reaction. I really liked How he reacted. Can't wait to see what happens next. Thanks for a fabulous new series.
Possible some spoilers , but Stormy Sebastian scene with Winchesters full moon on the bluff was perfect I just finished that series and the fantasy ones and Aunt Tilly is my favorite . this book is better than first really good mystery bolus learn more about characters , Landon and Terry help with case. Timeline with Wicked West Winchester series Clove is very pregnant and Bay & Landon been engaged not date set for few months . going to have figure out what card game is since I not heard of it but read b about in several series set in Michigan.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is always fun to see the Winchester Clan through someone else's point of view. Being so close to them I wondered how long it would be before they made an appearance. They are a perfect fit for Stormy as she navigates new waters. She effortlessly investigates when an older woman died outside the restaurant. Chief Terry and Landon assist with the case. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
Somebody is poisoning women in the little town of Shadow Hills, Michigan. One death occurred in the Two Broomsticks cafe, where Stormy Morgan works for her grandfather, and the other one occurred at the local senior center, where Stormy and her (maybe-gay) friend, Sebastian, were filling in as a euchre tournament team. In fact, it looks like Stormy might have been the intended victim.
Former bestselling author / currently broke waitress / neophyte witch Stormy has two main worries: 1. Can she keep her grandmother safe if the poisoner strikes again? And 2. How will her once and future boyfriend Hunter react to the news that Stormy may be a witch?
Sebastian is Story's new best friend and absolutely adorable. He's also her strong shoulder when people start dropping dead and her magic sparks. Hunter is still around counting down the days until he and Stormy can officially date. Until then Monica swears she wants to move on, unless her bestie wants to take some swipes by spreading rumors. The witches of Hemlock Cove make an appearance, but they aren't the strangest part. There's either a live triangle at the senior center or the competition over cards has upped the ante. After Stormy meets the local Romeo she doesn't know what to think.
I really love this character in so many ways. She's starting over, back at square one, with the help of her family and they drive her nuts, lol! Adding in newly discovered witchcraft and you've got a woman who sometimes feels completely overwhelmed. Her renewed relationships with Hunter and Sebastian are all kinds of wonderful and her family is hysterical. As an added bonus, we get to visit with the Winchester's and Hemlock Cove. All in all, a series that I can't wait for more of.
I really enjoyed the second book in this series I guess it was being with old friends again ones I've missed Chef Terry Landon helping out Hunter was great then to visit with the Winchester girls again especially Aunt Tillie I hope we see more of Bay and Landon as they get along great with Hunter and Stormy Love Sebastian like to see him have a happy ever after find his soal mate help him be who he's meant to be not be scared to show the small town who he really is and embraces his sexuality with both hands Grandpa is great too love him
This was a good addition to the series, and I like the tie end with the Winchester witches. In fact, I prefer this narrator over the one for their books. The only voice I enjoy is Aunt Tillie's, everyone else is annoying. I realize I am only invested because I have to know how the Winchester series ends, but I am little over them. I enjoyed Sébastien character and that Stormy is a little more self assured than Bay. Of course, I do see their similarities. I am sure I will read the next book. They are good for when I want to take my mind off of more serious things.
Caffeinated Calamity is a fun crossover with the Winchester Witches. I anticipate that there will be quite a bit of interaction between them since Stormy lives one town over from Hemlock Cove. Stormy has a lot to contend with in this book - murder at the diner, her newly forming relationship with Hunter, and of course the fact that she is a witch. Caffeinated Calamity is fast-paced with the quirky, snarky characters Amanda M. Lee is known for. I am not sure this is my favorite series of hers, but I am definitely enjoying it.
I had good intentions when I started this book. I was going to make it last. Only read a couple of chapters and then take a break and really enjoy it. Well three hours later I’m writing a review and intending to read it again after. I love Stormy and of course bring the Winchester’s in is about as good as it gets. I can hardly wait for Tilly and Grandpa to meet. Highly recommended
Book 2 gave me so much more and brought this series into its own even with crossing over with Hemlock Cove that just felt so natural and seamless like the two series had always been linked. Stormy I’d slowly figuring stuff out both magically and personally, Hunter is hilarious with is time frames and Sebastian is a great addition to this wonderful new series oh and I seriously love the grandparents it’s turning into a new favorite for me and knowing the ties to Hemlock cove make it even better.
Stormy Breeze Morgan blows back into her hometown down on her luck and money. Welcome to book two of a new series of hilarious witchy fun with new characters and visits to neighboring Hemlock Cove and old friends. Personally, I love the outrageous humor found within the pages of all of Amanda M Lee's books. I enjoy her snark as much as I enjoy her characters. ( I want to be just like Aunt Tilly when I am closing in on 80. 😉 )
Stormy is back, and getting better with each book. An elderly customer is poisoned at grandpa’s restaurant, followed by another old lady at the senior center. Cab Stormy and Sebastian, who really needs to come out of the closet, find the killer, before the killer gets to Stormy and her grandmother? But the book and find out. Oh, and Amanda? Caffeine is an antidote for hemlock poisoning. 😉
This is the second book in the series about Stormy and Hunter. Stormy is present when a client who has finished eating at her Grandfather 's restaurant dies. Her and Sebastian decide to help search for the killer and find the culprit is involved in the eucher tournaments at the senior center. Also Stormy visits the Winchester witches to help get a hand onher witchcraft. It was a good book.
