Wound by Gulfam Bhatia

4/5 stars

Wound is a beautiful collection of poems that tell the story of a young woman. A young woman who has harrowing experiences with abuse and rape throughout her entire life.

Through the poems we feel her pain, her being lost and utterly alone. And early on in the book we see a quote that surmises her suffering completely:

I hope to never be born
Into this world again

Nobody respects her. She is a tool to be used. And her husband is just a despicable man who doesn't take no for an answer.

I didn't ask anyone
To make me 'his'
-
If I knew that this world is too insane
I would do suicide in a drain

The one thing that saves her, and saves so many women in this horrible situation is carrying a life inside of her. And loving that life fiercely.

I was not prepared
To see
A little life inside of me

I have a child
Otherwise I would die

And her flashbacks to her past with her father broke my heart even more.

Sitting on the floor
Looking at the door
He beat me for the first time
When I was only four

And her husband isn't worth the air he breathes.

I didn't have a clue
Why my husband made my body blue
No courage to tell him it was cheating
To use a shoe to do the beating

I am not entirely sure if the author meant to show her strength with the next to lines. But I was cheering her on from the sidelines. Praying her to break this cruel cycle and relationship she is in.

I hope to see blood
He didn't know that

And I think one of the worst things any of us can experience is realizing the friends you gave your life for are completely ignoring you when you are in pain. It's like they are kicking you towards the abuse. Realizing how fake all those relationships are is a kick in the gut.

When my bad days came
People left my life
I used to knock on everyone's door
Didn't know they would ignore
And leave me crying of the floor

And no matter how strong you are. There are times when grief overwhelms you completely. And for a short while you long to be free of all this pain and suffering.

They were liars
I wanted to hang myself
But there were no wires

This intimate and painful collection of poems are beautifully and brilliantly written. I think Gulfam really captured the essence of all those women who are still suffering this abuse and giving them a voice. A voice to help them, empower them and give them back their freedom.

Though there is a poem near the end and it almost feels like it kinda negates the essence of this book. It's the following poem:

People are straying from marriage
No morals in stories in this age
Only mistakes that end up with sorries
Our culture is coming to an end

This entire collection is the story of a woman suffering horrendous pain and this poem feels so out of place. The author didn't say this one is separate from the rest. It feels like the author is saying women are giving up too easily. And I hate that. I am definitely gonna contact the author and ask for the context of this poem.
Because if you get abused, raped and used you are FREE to leave that relationship. That is not giving up. That is giving yourself and your child the life you deserve. It's insane to stay in an abusive relationship and tell your child indirectly that this is how it should be. So no, it is NOT a bad thing. It's the right thing to do. And whoever judges you for choosing safety, freedom and a better life for your child is just as bad as the abusive people in this poetry collection.

All in all a beautiful poetry collection. 4 big stars from me for this beautiful poetry collection.

In Wound, the author delivers a raw and heart-wrenching collection of poetry that delves into the profound aftermath of trauma experienced by a seventeen-year-old girl. Through evocative and deeply personal verse, this work serves as both a window into her pain and a call for societal change. The collection captures the vulnerability and resilience of the protagonist as she navigates the emotional landscape of her trauma. The poems feel authentic, allowing readers to connect deeply with her struggles and triumphs.
Wound is an unflinchingly honest and deeply moving collection that gives a voice to the voiceless. Through its poignant verses, it offers a blend of personal catharsis and universal resonance, urging readers to listen, understand, and advocate for change.
