Lung Ying-tai (traditional Chinese: 龍應台; simplified Chinese: 龙应台; pinyin: Lóng Yìngtái) (born February 13, 1952 in Kaohsiung) is a Taiwanese essayist and cultural critic. She occasionally writes under the pen name 'Hu Meili' (胡美麗). Lung's poignant and critical essays contributed to the democratization of Taiwan and as the only Taiwanese writer with a column in major mainland Chinese newspapers, she is an influential writer in Mainland China.
Lung was the Minister of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China in 2012-2014.
Some Chinese books (or books in other languages) are gems that are overlooked by the rest of the world because of the language barrier, and this book is one of them. I’ve recently made the decision to read more books written by people of my own culture and heritage, and while some were not that great, this book made me feel that I made the right choice. I’ve learnt so much about the history, geography and culture of Taiwanese people (or ethnically Chinese people) from this novel. It also forced me to reflect on my life.
The writing is also so effortlessly beautiful - I feel like I’m right there with her gazing at the mountains or playing with her cat. Sometimes when writers try to describe the setting or discuss heavy topics, it can feel like they are flaunting their vocabulary or showing off their knowledge. The author of this book is none of those - she writes like a wise lady who just wants to bring you around the town so that you can see for yourself how pretty it is.
Though I have to admit that I skip quite a lot of the words, I’m really glad I’m bilingual so that I can enjoy this piece of literature in its original form. Because there are just some things that can’t be translated. I will definitely be checking out other books written by her.
English version: Very inguing book, with lots of special ideas! Includs a wonderful mixture of folklore, philosophy, and bits and pieces of everyday life. Though it's more like an essay collection, it's still worth a read! (I especially loved the part where the author described the cat!)
Very informative and story line with deep human connection and kindness
So many information build into the story line with touching story line express family connection, human relation and kindness in this small town of south Taiwan. Love it.
Wonderful novel! Hope it will be translated into multiple other languages for more people to enjoy it. In addition to the story line, this is also a journal of native plants in southern Taiwan, a recording of the lives of ordinary people in the area.
