I think I liked the following volume more, but I think this one is just as valuable. Much shorter the second volume, with 1/5th as many contributing poets, this one feels more directed, like it has a more focused purpose. Fewer of the poems evoke that particular Maine-ness than in Balancing Act 2, but they are still authentic and enveloping. I love the opportunity to look back in time that this volume offers, showcasing a slice of these women's lives in the time that they wrote these poems. I would love to hear a discussion from these authors today, about how their lives have grown and changed, or not changed, from the time they were writing these. I hope I can get a copy of this to purchase at some point, just to have these women on my shelf. It feels like history, and it feels like home.
