The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known women for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
It was nice to learn more about Astrid Lindgren, the woman and author, who created such a beloved character: Pippi Longstocking. I still remember me watching the TV series and reading the books when I was a little girl, Pippi was such fun and I adored spending time in her company. I think this book is the perfect opportunity to go behind the scenes and get to know the person who made such a loved character possible.

An interesting short read about Astrid Lindgren aimed at the very young. I don't know much about this author although I love many of her books. This made me want to find out more. I didn't like the illustrations. The end timeline and short biography information was interesting.

This is such a beautiful little book, and a great addition to a series that I have found consistently wonderful. As a writer I particularly like this one - it’s ideal to read to the children/younger family members of writers to show the wonder and magic of creating stories for a living.

This story of Astrid Lindgren is that of a young girl who was thrilled to learn to read and enter fictional worlds. Once she was introduced to the world of books by a friend, she read through all the books in the library. She was a female Peter Pan, she didn't want to grow up. As she became older, she became a bit of a rebel. She cut off her hair, got a job at a newspaper and became a single mother all by the age of 19. She eventually got married and had another child, a daughter, Karin. It was Karin who gave her the name Pippi Longstocking to make up stories about. She finally wrote the stories down that she had made up for her daughter and the rest is history. I know I loved the Pippi Longstocking stories as a young girl and actually wrote my speech in grade 4 about my favourite book character. This is another great addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series. Once again, the illustrations are wonderful, especially geared to young children. This book should once again be in all school and public libraries. I love that this series can be used to teach about dreaming big, famous people that might not be well known, learning about writing a biography and as a step off for further research. The publisher provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This here is about Astrid Lindgren, the author of Pippi Longstocking. When I was a child I really loved Pippi's wilderness and honesty. It was cool knowing about the person behind Pippi and how the character was created.

FBRC REVIEW :

DISCLAIMER : Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC of this book. I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.

Little People Big Dreams is an amazing Children's non-fiction series that you can start for your young kids. It's a beautiful book with cute illustrations and a simple story to get your kids introduced to really inspiring personalities. I really enjoyed the book and I believe this is a great starting point for non-fiction for young readers. The book is very short focusing only on the important events of Astrid Lindgren's life. Her life as a child and how she came to write stories and her first job are all well put together to bring to life her legacy in a way that's easily understood by kids. The language is simply easy to read and enjoy. We get a brief idea of who she is and how she came to be an author and one of the most loved creators for her character Pippi Longstocking and some small tidbits about her life as well.y have a variety of stories featuring amazing personalities with inspiring stories from all over the world. The wide array of books they have gives us an amazing list of books to choose from and. stories of extraordinary people with incredible journeys that will inspire and empower young minds. Her story is inspiring and empowering and is made accessible to kids with the accompaniment of games, puzzles, toys and such. The story is a reminder to all of us as to how every successful person that we see today, the role models we follow all came to be who they are with a small dream and hard work. I gave this book 5 stars and highly recommend checking it out.

I LOVE Astrid Lindgren but I didn't love this book about her.

I grew up with Lindgren's books and they are part of my best childhood memories. Her stories are always charming, entertaining, and surprising. Another thing I love about Lindgren's books are the gorgeous illustrations. I always loved listening to her stories and looking at the pictures.

That is why this book was so disappointing. It was interesting to read about A. Lindgren - even though I had read about her before - and I liked her short bio but I can't say the same about the illustrations. I didn't like the style or the colors and since this is a picture book, it is the main reason I gave it only 2 stars.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Astrid Lindgren by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is another charming addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS series. This time around, it is the creator of the beloved literary character, Pippi Longstocking, whose life is examined in a much simplified, yet accessible, way. Once again, through a text that is accompanied by appealing illustrations, we learn of the early life of this Swedish author, whose own name might not be immediately recognizable, but who is the genius behind the enduring and well known heroine of children's literature, the irrepressible and unforgettable Pippi Longstocking.

This is yet another gem to add to an already impressive and incomparable collection.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens for this ARC.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This book is another delightful short read about an influential woman who has influenced and inspired people. Astrid Lindgren grew up very happy living on a farm with her family and then one day she discovered a passion for reading and it changed her life immensely. Astrid was well known for her childrens books about a fun and adventurous character called Pippi Longstocking who I remeber from my own childhood. This is a delightful read and is inspirational to children showing them that a passion for something can turn into a dream which can turn into reality.

A new (well, for me) Little People Big Dreams and this time about one of my favourite authors! Meet Astrid Lindgren!

I came across this book in the library a week ago and just had to bring it along. It was the Dutch edition, but decided (since these books do come out in English often and I know some readers look forward to my reviews for these books) to write the review in Dutch.

In this book we find out all we want about Astrid Lindgren and while there were some things I knew, some things were new! I didn’t know that she had an affair + baby with a married man, that quite shocked me I have to say. But there were also good things, like that she was directly involved with the TV show of Pippi. Or that she kept making up new stories for her baby girl in which Pippi played the main character. How she bundled those stories and how that started her fame. It was just so much fun to read and I had tons of fun. I just flew through the book and was sad that it was over!

I really liked the extra information in the end that summarises the book + gives some bonus content + some photographs of Astrid.

Oh, and I just have to mention that I loved how reading sessions with her neighbour brought her into the world of books! Seeing that picture of her in a room full of books, love it!

The art was OK. It was a times really pretty, but I was a bit put-off by the fact everyone’s arms were see-through. If their whole body was that, but no. Just arms. Oh and also ears at some times. It was just a bit weird.

But all in all, I had tons of fun reading this one and I would highly recommend it to all who want to know more about Astrid and her life. About Pippi.

Astrid Lindgren is a book in the Little People, Big Dreams series and is a children's picture book written by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and illustrated by Linzie Hunter. It is a cursory biography of Astrid Lindgren – an Australian tennis player and former world's best player.

March, at least in my part of the world is Women's History Month, which I plan to read one children's book, particularly a biography, which pertains to the subject everyday this month. Therefore, I thought that this book would be apropos for today.

Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren was a Swedish writer of fiction and screenplays. She is best known for several children's book series, featuring Pippi Longstocking, Emil i Lönneberga, Karlsson-on-the-Roof, and the Six Bullerby Children and for the children's fantasy novels Mio, My Son, Ronia the Robber's Daughter, and The Brothers Lionheart.

Vegara's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. It starts off with a young Astrid Lindgren who grew up on a farm in Näs, Sweeden. She found out a love for reading, which she coined as magic and traces her life to the point where she not only became a children’s book author, but one of the most important writers in children literature. At the end, there is a concise and informative biography timeline of Astrid Lindgren's life. Hunter's illustrations are done somewhat well and consistent to other books in the series and rather apropos to the target audience.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It traces the life of Astrid Lindgren from her life as a child in Näs, Sweeden, who loved reading and defied convention and followed her heart. When her daughter asked for a story starring a girl named Pippi Longstocking – a literary sensation was born.

All in all, Astrid Lindgren is a wonderful, albeit cursory, biography of a little girl that dared to dream big and worked hard and became one of the important writer in children literature – Astrid Lindgren.

Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara once again writes and illustrated a beautiful story - this time focusing on writer and dreamer, Astrid Lindgren.

Lindgren was an author I knew of, but never read myself. But who doesn’t know and love Pippi Longstocking? After reading this short & sweet peek into the childhood and early stages of her career, I want to find anything & everything she’s ever written and devour them.

While I *always* enjoy the Little People, Big Dreams books, I was particularly taken with how the author shared certain aspects of Lindgren’s life that many other children’s authors would have glossed over or ignored completely. For example, when Astrid wakes up one day with a “terrible feeling” that “life suddenly seemed so complicated,” it seemed that Vegara was trying to lightly touch on the idea that perhaps Astrid was a bit depressed. Do I know this for sure? No. However, what a great conversation starter for parents & teachers to have with their young audience as they read it together...whether that be about feeling down or the fear of growing up.

The other moment in the story that impressed me was when Vegara quite simply stated that Astrid, at age 19, became a single mom. Again, not a typical subject picture books tend to cover. However, it was handled beautifully, written as fact and then on to the next part of Lindgren’s life with zero judgment. Well Done!

As always, Ms. Vegara brings us a Solid Five Star Read. A huge Thank You to NetGalley & Quarto Publishing Group-Francis Lincoln Childrens for the digital copy to review.

This is a part of a larger series of picture book to introduce famous people to very young children. This is not meant to be the end all and be all. This is simply meant to let kids know that there are people out there that are cool, and they might want to know more about, in time.

In this case, it is the author of Pippi Longstockings, someone they probably haven't read yet, but might now be curious about, having heard about this author, and her amazing life.

The story tells how she never wanted to be an adult, and didn't behave as an adult when she grew up, and Pippi came out of wanting to give her daughter a book she would enjoy reading. Those are often the best kinds of reasons to write.

Another delightful life made interesting.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

I love this book!  The illustrations are so vibrant and appealing.  The story of Astrid is that of a girl who was thrilled to learn to read and enter fictional worlds.  She loved being a child and was not eager to grow up.  But, grow up she did and as a bit of a rebel.  Readers will learn that Astrid's most famous character, Pippi Longstocking, got her name from the author's daughter,  Karin.  Astrid eventually wrote these stories down and...the rest is history.

This is another excellent entry in a series that offers children the opportunity to learn about little people who grew up to be people who did big things.  As always, there is a timeline  biography at the end of the book with photos of the author.

Review to be added to Amazon UK and US on 3rd March 2020 - publication day!

I love the books in this series and always find something new in them.

This was a book that focused on an author I didn't know anything about.

I had heard of the books she had written but nothing about the lady herself so this was a great one for me

Lovely images and another great addition to the series - 4 stars from me for this one

I will never stop enjoying and recommending this series and this one does not disappoint.

As a child I loved the Pippi Longstocking stories and here we have a biography of the author. Told in the now familiar style of the Little People Big Dreams series, we read the story of Astrid's life with bright pictures and child friendly language. This is a great introduction to biography writing for young children, with further reading suggestions for anyone who wants to find out more.

I will hopefully be recommending that we purchase this for our school library as we strive to introduce our children to more classic children's authors.

Being different is not very supported in our culture. Astrid Lindgren was a pioneer in this area. And she proved that a woman could be a great mother and professional, all while keeping true to herself. And she transmitted this power into her books, inspiring and delighting millions of children!

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Astrid Lindgren is a new biography for babies and the youngest readers in the Little People, Big Dreams series. I've reviewed a number of these titles and all of them are delightful and exuberant little books which cover the lives of famous cultural, science, arts, and innovative icons while maintaining an age-appropriate level of detail.

Due out 3rd March 2020 from Quarto on their Frances Lincoln Children'sFrances Lincoln Children's imprint, it'll be 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

Written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara it's well written in clear accessible language. The gentle and sweetly whimsical illustrations are well done. The art by Linzie Hunter is appealing and colorful and supports the text very well. The art is rich in small subtle details which bear a closer look (like the books, animals, multicultural children, and more which appear throughout the book). I love to see so many kids and adults reading in the illustrations!

Well written and appealing, I am really enjoying all of these little books. This one is a worthy addition.

Five stars. This would make a superlative reading circle book, classroom library book, or gift. Ms. Lindgren was and is an intelligent and beloved author and this little book is a nice introduction to her life and work for the youngest generation.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

My thanks to Quarto Publishing Group - Francis Lincoln Children’s Books for a temporary digital edition via NetGalley of ‘Astrid Lindgren’, written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Linzie Hunter, in exchange for an honest review.

This little book is intended for children aged 4-7 and is part of its publishers acclaimed ‘Little People, BIG DREAMS’ series that introduces young readers to the lives and works of significant people including scientists, writers, political figures and the like via books and educational games.

Swedish author Astrid Lindgren is best known for her Pippi Longstocking stories. We learn here that the character was named by Astrid’s daughter, Karin, when she was ill and requested that her mother tell her a story about Pippi Longstocking.

Lindgren later created a homemade book of the stories for Karin and in 1945 it was officially published in Sweden, eventually becoming a global bestseller. Pippi Longstocking challenged stereotypes about girls. She continues to be well loved throughout the world.

I was interested to read that Astrid went on to be involved in its television adaptations. She won two Hans Christian Anderson medals in recognition of her work.

Little Astrid’s enthusiasm for books and reading reminded me of Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’.

The illustrations by Hunter are sweet and quirky. At the back of the book is a biographical timeline including photographs of this inspiring author’s life. On the back cover another biography for slightly older children is recommended for those wanting to learn more.

This little book is a wonderful opportunity to introduce young readers to the life and work of Astrid Lindgren and to her famous red-haired, pigtailed creation.

I somehow missed out on Pippi Longstocking growing up though later in life I became aware of her through references in other works. So having the opportunity to read this book also educated me.

It’s hard to believe this is the 35th book in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series.

As a lifelong reader, it’s almost embarrassing to say that I’ve never read Pippi Longstockings books. But I can honestly say that I now know something about Astrid, the dreamer, storyteller, and author after reading this 32-page book.

And that’s what this series is all about. Introducing kids to the Little People who believed in themselves and had BIG DREAMS.

In this series, there is a short story followed by more detailed information. This feels extremely important to each of these books since it offers adults the opportunity to expound on the story.

In the case of Astrid Lindgren, we learn about the creator of the literary character, Pippi Longstocking. The story is concise, yet enough to inform and inspire.

And I would even hope that reading this book might lead to an interest in exploring Pippi Longstockings books.

My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for the ability to review and give my opinion of this eARC book.

What Concerned Me
I had a little trouble with the text on one page. It’s probably just me, but it didn’t feel appropriate. The page is giving examples of Astrid being a rebel. It says she was

1. the first in town to cut her hair short,
2. she got a job at the newspaper,
3. and that she became a single mother at 19.

Facts? I’m sure.

But that page didn’t work for me.

What I Liked Best
This little series of books is a wonderful way to acquaint a child with various notable women.

Astrid Lingred is the author of the Pippi Longstocking tales. This book is one of the new 2020 additions to the Little People, Big Dreams series which I'm 100% obsessed with. I adore the entire series and their fun way to share factual life stories of important humans from history. The illustrations follow a similar style across the series, yet each one enraptures the spirit of the person for which the book is about by using clever color schemes and content relevant imagery. I love how this continuity is present while also making each book effectively stand out.

Astrid was a young Swedish girl who fell in love with stories at an early age, she grew to be a strong and independent woman, and wrote Pippi Longstocking by request of her daughter. This short biography gives more details to each of these milestones in her life as well as the origination of her award winning heroine. The colors feel uplifting and spring themed, which are appropriate for Astrid's personality as well as the March 2020 publish date. Another favorite feature is the timeline and synopsis at the end of the book including real photos of Astrid.

This series is so wonderful because it is told in a way that feels like a sweet bedtime story yet contains great information for young and old readers alike. I love reading these with my kids, and for myself. I highly recommend this book as well as the others in this series to all ages! A must have for a children's library.

Read for the Reading Women Challenge 2020 rubric nr 12: 'Book about a woman who inspires me'. I read this standing up in Foyle's Waterloo. Is it slight cheating to read a children's picture book? Murky territory! After all, children's books are books, even literature. And everyone may interpret the rubrics as they please. Also, I tried and tried to find adult books on women who inspired me. Where are the books about Christine Lagarde? Reese Witherspoon? Jane Fonda? Joanna Penn? (About, not by.) I guess I could have another stab at Ursula Le Guin but this sweet little book, part of a brilliant series on biographies of women called out to me from the shelf. Astrid Lindgren was the first woman author to inspire me when family friends gave me Die Kinder von Bullerbü (I was 6, I think) with the brilliant illustrations by Ilon Wikland (the ones to the first edition, not the later cutesified ones). This picture book focused heavily on Pippi Longstocking which shows how the Anglophone world is not as obsessed with all of Lindgren's oeuvre to the same extent that the Germanophone world is.

The picutes are fun and quirky. The story is simple and short. What a fun book! I'd have loved this series when I was tiny or when my children were tiny. Kudos to its conceivers.

I received a copy of this adorable book via the publisher and NetGalley.
I have two amazing daughters of my own and we thoroughly enjoy the Little People, Big Dreams series by Isabel Sanchez Vegara. The story about Astrid Lindgren was no different.
The book contained the same, wonderful illustrations as all the others in the series. The bright colors and original drawings always enthrall my children and I as we read about these amazing people.
The story of Astrid was one I didn’t know about before hand. Although I’ve read Pippi Longstocking and loved the movie as a child, I guess I didn’t realize it was Astrid Lindgren who created the character. That’s what this book is about; Astrid’s life and her creating of Pippi Longstocking and all the stories, shows, and love that came after she imagined this amazing character for her daughter.
I highly recommend this book. It’s great for younger ages because it doesn’t give too much information, but it’s also perfect for a bit older children as well because it gives just enough to peek their interest and cause them to want to know more.
We can’t wait to see what Little People, Big Dreams comes up with next!
