He's the biggest, baddest bear around... and he's claimed me as his mate.

I didn't need to go to Kodiak Island to find a beast like him in the wild. He found me.

He stripped me, spanked me, and then took me roughly and savagely.

I ran from him, the thought of another night of brutal, desperate climaxes and quivering, screaming surrender far too shameful to contemplate. But fate brought me back to him.

There will be no escape this time.

He's going to punish me. Then he's going to claim me as his mate.

Dubious consent is too generous!

Rape, rape, rape. I couldn’t even finish it. I’m all about the D/s genre and have read hundreds (no exaggeration) of books with that theme, but this was flat out rape. She tried to get away at each sex scene, he forced her over surfaces, ‘spanked’ her when she fought back, she actually said ‘NO’ and was f*cked despite that. She complained that he was so rough with her the first time that she was in pain for days after, she ran from him afterward! There was no romance, hell, there was no common decency. I don’t care that he’s a bear. Shifter romance typically has an element of care and cherishing a mate, this was abuse and rape. Not a fan, don’t know if I’ll read anything by this author again.

This was too much for me. I know there was a disclaimer but I found it very graphic and troubling. The lack of consent was a real trigger for me.

I am conflicted. I loved the action, advenure, suspense, and danger of the situation with the Koto brothers. The Koto's alternate selves were surprising.

Alex/King's initial encounter at the bar, with Flynn, was fine. Her choice. By the time they got to the office, it had turned into what I thought of as a non-con, dubious con situation. I say that because I wasn't really sure. Even as their "entanglements" occurred throughout the book, Flynn's internal dialogue was that she wanted what King was giving her.

Of course, his dominant personality was firmly rooted I his Kodiak bear side. Alex was a shifter, but his attitude was pure "nature". I don't know if he ever said he loved Flynn. He may have, but I don't remember him saying the words. Flynn only said it sarcastically, so there is that too. As far as his relationship with Flynn, he absolutely leaned into his bear and not his human. I think that was what was different about this book. Alex wasn't trying to coax Flynn into what he wanted, he demanded.

Anywho, we start out with consent, a no is given, then through the majority of the book there is the non con/dubious con with the "I want this but I shouldn't" internal dialogue, and finally the "Ok, we are mates, Full consent" at the end.

That is why I felt conflicted. I did like that Flynn was strong and independent. Then she seemed to start reacting on a purely emotional basis. I was frustrated because Flynn didn't listen to her instincts. She continually put herself in danger without much thought to the situation or consequences of her actions. She did eventually stand by Alex in spite of the consequences.

The rest of the storyline was good. The shifter action, suspense, adventure, and danger outside of the whole "you are my mate, do what I say" theme was interesting. 3.5 stars.

If non-con/dubious con, spanking offends you, take a pass on this book.

He is one big and hard bear

Kodiak is what you think when you picture a big bear......over powering and all muscle with no real tenderness. That is exactly what I thought of with the "H", and I am using the quotes on purpose here. I have found that with Delta James stories the characters sort of blend into each other. For his one I thought there were some definite hot and sizzling scenes for the H sort of ruined the book for me.

I received a copy of this book for my honest review. My opinions are all my own and I know that even though I did not really like this book a lot other readers will love it. I might just have to give Delta James books a vacation for a while to see if I can get back into her version of a H, who never seems to soften at all for the woman that he is supposed to be in love with.

Average

It was average, meaning it had proper sentence structure, no major grammatical mistakes, and a decent plot. However, I've found with Delta James books, the main male characters never grow; the main female characters are the ones who always need to change and adapt and frankly, regress at times. I wish the author put more thought into how the main male character might be willing to adapt at least somewhat to the female characters needs. I love a good spanking story as much as the next person, but all James's stories tend to be very one sided. Not really my cup of tea.

Kodiak

Delta James has written Kodiak, a rough shifter book. I gave it four stars because the story was good up to a point. I will now say I don't see how a woman would let herself be treated the way she was. He was ruthless. An HEA without being an HEA.

It was a steamy read but there was some red flags that I did not feel comfortable with. There is nothing wrong with consenting adults enjoying each other company, but when that said consent is blurred it is definitely not okay. I loved the actions and Flynn strong personality. It was an okay read for me.

Ehh

I love a good dom story but this was either borderline abuse or just plain abuse. It honestly seemed more like a rape story that ended in Stockholm Syndrome than anything else.

This riveting and exciting Kodiak shifter with Komodo dragon shifters….

Alex is totally blown away when he meets a stunning woman in a bar and has a romantic interlude with her and discovers she is his mate, whilst he goes to get transport, he returns to find that Flynn has disappeared and for two years he tries to find her unsuccessfully.

Imagine Flynn’s surprise when she sees her client a supposed world renown photographer shoots a Kodiak bear, then sees one shimmer before her eyes and change into a man and not jus any man but her lover of two years previous, a man she has not been able to forget. Alex cannot believe that tis brother has been shot and the woman accompanying the trophy hunter is no other that his lost mate Flynn.

Koto’s brothers all born of the same clutch are seeking retribution for their brother’s death and like him they are Komodo shifters, cold and calculating murderers that will not only hunt down Alex and Flynn but also his brother’s family as well
This was a wonderful start to this book and it held me completely captivated from start to finish, the characters were wonderful and the plot was excellently written.

I found this shifter romance so enthralling that it kept my attention until the end. The plot is suspenseful, well-written & very intriguing. In particular, I was really amused with the main characters (Alex & Flynn) & how they really stuck sparks off each other with their opposing personalities but they absolutely complimented each other.
There is: a rather domineering alpha male bear shifter (Alex Kingston) finally meets his very feisty & independent female mate (Flynn Montgomery) but after a steamy encounter she sneaks out & he goes on the hunt for her but they only come into contact with each other two years later in a most unusual situation, bear shifters, monstrous lizards, a feisty human female, mates, twists & turns, intrigue, drama, humor, adventure, action, deceit, confrontations, violence, conflict, devious plans, threats, danger, villainous villains, protectiveness, defiance, discipline, spankings, bonding, contentment, steamy scenes & a satisfying conclusion. I would recommend this shifter romance

Delta James can write. BUT every time I read one of her books I remember why I give two star reviews and insist I’m never going to read another one. The men are a-holes who rape, punish, and dominate without a thought or apology. They take as is their “right.” And at NO point is the female heard, loved, cherished as a mate, or given the right to independent thought. Every female lead suffers from “the vagina that can’t help itself.” And every male mistakes a wet cunt with consent.
In this book King is NOT faithful during their two year separation even though he knows she is his mate. He locks her up in between forced sex and punishment sessions. His empathy and emotions are NONEXISTENT. He isn’t even a sexy a-hole. He’s just a dick. I’m more than half way through and once again I’m likely to DNF this one. Delta James is not my type of romance even though her writing is strong. It would be nice to have a good grovel from these men and choice with these feisty heroines. Until then... I am officially moving on from her books.

Loved this story. It is well written and entertaining. Alex has a one night stand in Seattle and finds his mate but she gives him the slip. For two years he returns to Seattle and searches for her with no luck. Flynn is hired as a guide but things go wrong when the hunter has other ideas and shots a Kodiak bear (Alex’s brother, Josh, a shifter) for a trophy. Alex comes to her rescue and from their it gets dangerous for them and his clan. This is a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a lot happening in this book and it is full of dangerous. I would highly recommend this book.

Flynn was exactly what Alex needed. She's strong, independent, not one to just lie down and take what life throws at her, smart, confident, and maybe in over her head with this one. Alex is overbearing, bossy, total Alpha Male, and too sexy for his own good. You can tell from their first meeting how their romance is going to go, and I loved every second of it. The story has all the action, adventure, danger and excitement a reader could want. It also has all the sexiness, heat, passion and romance. When you add in the snark, humor, fun characters, and shifters, you end up with a story that is impossible to put down. I loved it and I can't wait for more!

Alex is definitely an alpha in charge of a group of bossy bears. Not subtle or gentle, but underneath it all he is caring and possibly even romantic - in a rough and tumble way. Flynn is the perfect match for his arrogance. She is independent, strong, and willing to fight for what she believes is correct. Danger from outside throws her a little, but her persistence and responsiveness to the emotion evoked just makes her that much more relatable. Will her feminine charms be the counterpoint to his more aggressive ways? Will the komodo clan be more than the Kodiak's can handle?

Loved this book, a really dominant Alpha Male, a very sassy Female who runs off after their one night together. He identified her as his mate from the beginning, and spent the next couple of years holidaying in Seattle trying to find her. A chance encounter brings them back into each other’s company and there’s no way that he’s going to let her get away! A fabulous story, with a huge amount of action, Komodo dragons and bears! Superb book to read.

A chance meeting and quickie encounter convinces Alex that he's found his mate, but she sneaks out to escape. Two years of searching and he finally finds her in Alaska. But trouble is following her and his clan is endangered. He knows he must protect her even though she isn't ready to accept their relationship. Lots of excitement looms right up until the exciting climax (no pun intended). Very Alpha clan leader meets capable, headstrong mate. Great shifter story!

This book starts out with a bang and just keeps going! Alex and Flynn are hot together but both are head strong and that causes problems. I loved the whole set up of this story. Getting to see a shifter that I've not read about before was really neat also. There is danger coming and it's going to keep Alex busy and with Flynn getting in his way, it's going to be harder. The story is hot, the sex is hot...........just get this book!!!!!!!!

What a great story. Alex is the Alpha of his clan. Flynn is a professional with lots of degrees. When they meet the heat is off the charts! This story has a lot of the feels everyone wants in a Delta James book! Fun, danger, lust and love are right there to dig into. This story takes the word Mate very seriously! Very good read. Get ready to turn up the A/C. Possessive, protective, and positively perfect! Delta James introduces us to a world of shifters that opened me to the possibilities. She added a suspenseful and exciting storyline with her signature wealth of heat that had me shivering in anticipation of where she was taking us. Nothing grabs my attention more than two strong characters whose strengths clash in the most delicious ways. Fabulous story!

Shifter romance with some serious heat! Alex Kingston is a shifter who meets his mate one night and loses her. Flynn Montgomery never forgot King and didn't expect to meet him again in such dangerous circumstances. Well written - so much passion and chemistry between these two. Dominating and so protective and a little traditional in his views .. King is spectacular!! A must read for all shifter romance lovers.

I haven't read all of Delta James' books, but I've never been disappointed in any I have read. This one was incredible. Alex is rough around the edges, to say the least. Flynn is as independent as a heroine can be. Together they're explosive. The HEA was not a surprise, but very satisfying. Loved it!

This book was a rollercoaster. Flynn’s character cracks me up. She is so sassy and independent. Alex is the uber Alpha-hole who won’t take no for an answer. There’s some twist and turns. Tons of spankings and HAF sexy times. If you like Delta’s Wayward Mate Series, this is tight up you alley.

Contains spoilers !

4.5/5
Told in 3rd person
Neither hero (Alex Kingston) or heroine(Flynn) are virgins.
Human bear shifter + human female
fated mates trope
Trigger Warning: dubious consent!!
There are many scenes where the heroine says no and gives her 5 cents but the hero just straight up tells her, “yes.”
🤣🤣🤣
Heroine is like a tsundere. She says no but her body and heart says yes. She says she wants to go home and doesn’t want to fuck the hero but when she’s in his embrace she doesn’t rebuke. 🤔
In a way she does know she wants to be with him, but the hero just comes off too strong initially and she freaked out cause she usually don’t just let a guy she just met finger her in a pub then fuck her at the back room. 👁👄👁
And when she’s not with him, she constantly thinks about him. Other men just don’t cut it for her anymore. (For 2 years!)

Hero is a even more stubborn, possessive, one track mind and loyal alpha male. He’s the leader of his clan and what he says goes. If his inner bear says Flynn is his mate, then there will be no other woman after her. He would die for her, live for her and breath for her. Even if she refutes him, she is his. ❤️

Steamy smex scenes🌶 anal, spanking, hair pulling, deep throat’s, rough sex, cream pie, man-handling and multiple orgasms, public sex, fingering 💯💯💯
No self induced angst from assumptions.

No cheating. No other woman/man.
(there is a brief mention of both of them trying to hook up with others during their separation—heroine freaked out and ran away to avoid confrontation after sex—but realized it just isn’t right)
The Hero did have 1~2 sexual encounters during his rut (when heron ran away) but stopped because it left him feeling empty and unsatisfied.

Possessive, arrogant and caring alpha male shifter.👍🏻
It’s either his way or, well, his way. 🧐

Dubious consent is my guilty pleasure. But only when we (as readers) know that the hero will do anything for their lady! In this case, that’s what’s up! 👌🏼💯

Honestly this is like the borderline of dub-con I can accept lol
Only reason why it’s an okay in my book because the hero has an instinctually “knowing” that the heroine is his mate and the heroine doesn’t physically or verbally refutes the hero when he’s in embrace distance.

In the book it’s described as the heroine’s logic vs her “primal instinct.”
Logic dictates that her physical reaction to the way the hero man handles her is a red flag and any respectable woman shouldn’t react this way.
Meanwhile her “inner primal instinct” dictates that this feels right. Being with him feels right.

Oh and shifters can “change” their mates into shifters as well through their bonding ceremony!

Most of the hero and heroine encounter scenes are smut. 👀

Happy ending!

❤️❤️❤️Beautiful scene where you see the hero confesses his love for the heroine and a rare sight of his vulnerability on display!

-0.5 (for me)
The transition of Flynn accepting her circumstances towards the end feels a bit rushed.

She literally exchanged verbal banter with the hero and tried to run away for 80% of the book and after accidentally unleashing her shifter form once and got her brains fucked out in town during that rampage, she suddenly accepts her situation and even tells him she loves him. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hero describes her stubbornness of accepting she’s his mate as she’s “afraid of herself.”
I think New things happening that’s out of her control and being with him in close proximity makes her loose of sense of the self that she’s always know.
Flynn have never met such a dominating male like the hero before.

I did start to find her stubbornness annoying. Lol

Would I re-read? Once is enough.

I do recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brutal and so Good
Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2020
This was a very different shifter story than i am used to.Not that
it was less entertaining, but at times i found it difficult to keep up
with the plot.If your looking for a good read with a determined
alpha male and a feisty heroine who finds trouble at every turn,
than this is the book for you.

Bear shifters battle it out against Komodo Dragons.Shifters against
shifters.Mate against mate.Who will win?

After one steamy night of sex in a bar in Seattle,Alex Kingston knew
that Flynn Montgomery was his fated mate.Unfortunately,Flynn has
other ideas and it was two years before Alex found Flynn once again.
Flynn has no idea of the danger she faces when acting as a guide for
Henry Koto.Henry is not what he seems, and tricks Flynn into going
to Shuyak Island with every attention of having a Kodiac bear as a
trophy.

Danger and chaos ran wild while Alex attempted to claim Flynn and
rid the world of the Koto family.Flynn put up a good fight, escaping
Alex at every opportunity. He was never going to let her go and she
paid a painful price for her behavior.

I admired Flynn for her strength and resilience ,but she also frustrated
me at times .She found herself in danger so many times while trying to
escape from Alex.Alex demanded Flynn’s surrender. Not with words of
love, but with one spanking at a time.He wanted Flynn, and he was
going to have her despite how she felt.He was often brutal and harsh
when he mated with Flynn. No wonder she kept trying to escape. Her
mind rejected him but her body responded to him on a primal level
that could only be satisfied by his rough treatment.

This book was fast paced and action packed. There was nothing gentle
about it. It was intense and filled with primal need.I did not like how
Alex took Flynn without her consent, but overall the story was addictive.

This is a great story. Ms. James writes a compelling shifter story. Alex is the leader of a Kodiak bear clan. He has an old fashioned attitude towards the woman who will be his mate. She will do as he says or he will spank her until she surrenders. She will be his mate and transition to become a Kodiak bear so they can have children who are shifters as well. This isn't what Flynn wants, but her body is on Alex's side and no matter how hard she tries not to be, she is aroused by him. The chemistry between them is high and she finds herself submitting. It doesn't stop her from doing what she thinks is right and Flynn brings about a change in Alex's thinking by the end of the book.

I love the strong females that Ms. James writes about. They are alpha women who only submit to their mates. If you like the other books Ms. James writes, you'll love this one.

We get Bear and Komodo Dragon shifters in this story. Alex, a Bear shifter knows the moment he meets Flynn that she's his mate, it takes at least two years until Flynn begins to learn this. On a wilderness guide that Flynn brings a client on, the shifter mystery reveals itself in a dangerous, bloody way. Alex has a goal, his sole purpose is to get his mate and it's rutting season. There is much sex involved and most of it is pure animal instinct. Their mating is inevitable but I really wish Alex had a bit more humanity in him, there was no romancing his mate, just the drive to rut. The adventure and danger filled the story out and Flynn does come around to accept and desire her mate in the end with a new understanding of shifters and a HEA.
