Carolina Homecoming: A Romance Inspired by the Book of Ruth

Rate this book
Widowed by the Civil War, Ruth Grant insists on accompanying her grieving mother-in-law Noemie back to her roots in the beautiful but isolated foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This escape to a place barely touched by war will prove to be anything but peaceful for the two strong-willed women.

Montgomery Boaze is the wealthiest farmer in the upstate. He also happens to be a handsome widower. When distant relative Noemie returns home and butts heads with a mutual enemy, Montgomery appoints himself her and Ruth's protector. Not such a difficult task since he adores his kin…and finds the beautiful, young widow bewitching.

Together, the three will become entangled in a battle over land, loyalty, and love that has nothing to do with North versus South.

“Heather Blanton is blessed with a natural storytelling ability, an ‘old soul’ wisdom, and wide expansive heart. Her characters are vividly drawn, and in the western settings where life can be hard, over quickly, and seemingly without meaning, she reveals Larger Hands holding everyone and everything together.”

I write Christian Historical Western Romance. Yes, that often entails the use of firearms in a threatening manner. Sometimes there are fistfights. There may even be politically incorrect but historically accurate language. But also, there is always an inspirational message and strong allusions (at least) to the gospel.

A former journalist, I am an avid researcher and endeavor to skillfully weave truth in among fictional story lines. I love exploring the American West, especially ghost towns and museums. I have walked parts of the Oregon Trail, ridden horses through the Rockies, climbed to the top of Independence Rock, and even held an outlaw's note in my hand.

I grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina on a steady diet of Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and John Wayne Westerns. My most fond childhood memory is of sitting next to my daddy, munching on popcorn, and watching Lucas McCain unload that Winchester! My daddy also taught me to shoot and, trust me, I can sew buttons on with my rifle.

I am a proud member of Western Writers of America.

My novels are all Christian Western Romance because this is the genre that lets me write about strong, pioneer women and men who struggle to find God and then live out their faith in real ways. Like good old fashioned Westerns, there is always justice, a moral message, American values, lots of high adventure, unexpected plot twists, and more than a touch of suspense. Of course, romance is always a strong element in my stories because it is such a beautiful gift from God and a perfect reflection of how he loves us: sacrificially and lavishly. My stories aren’t preachy or cheesy, but I hope they are inspirational, heart-warming, realistic, illuminating, and glorifying to God.

I'm always seated for a Book of Ruth retelling, especially one that's as well-written as this one!

I like what Heather Blanton did with Ruth's story, you can see the parallels, but she still found a way to make the story her own.

It was such a heartwarming read, despite the villain being truly awful. But we will be ignoring Leroy's existence from here on out, okay!! Only happy vibes allowed.

I really love Ruth as a character, Noemie too. Blanton managed to capture the strong bond between them perfectly. Of course, I care deeply for Montgomery and Bear as well, and cheered for the former's romance with Ruth every step of the way.

I'd say the setting was perfectly chosen, not just because it's one I love reading about, but it also fits the story so well.

This is my first book by this author, but I'll be checking out more of her works in the future.

Christian Historical Romance
(One book, two titles)
South Carolina Bride AND/OR Carolina Homecoming: A Romance Inspired by the Book of Ruth (Thanksgiving Books and Blessings 1) by Heather Blanton

This was a fun play on the Naomi and Ruth story in the Bible. Set during the Civil War, the ladies return to Neomi's home in rural South Carolina. Her evil "cousin" tries to destroy everything Neomi holds dear, while her beloved "cousin" works hard to rebuild her faith alongside her daughter in law, Ruth. (Even as he fights his battle of longing for the young widow!)
While I enjoyed the story very much, there are a few scenes that made me gasp with the evil of them. But God not only wins in the end, Neomi is redeemed, saved, and restored!

I recently attended an online event to kick off this year's Thanksgiving Books & Blessings Collection (now in its 3rd year). Simply by engaging in the discussion, participants were entered into a drawing for one of the stories being discussed. When my name was drawn, I chose Carolina Homecoming because of my familiarity with the author and the premise of her story. A review was not expected so I offer these opinions out of my sincere appreciation for a couple of enjoyable hours spent with a well-written book.

Carolina Homecoming is Heather Blanton's re-imagining of the book of Ruth. While those familiar with the biblical story will recognize the similarities, they should expect a unique story that remains true to the author's brand. For instance, despite being set in the foothills of South Carolina during the Civil War, Blanton works in many of the elements you’ll find in her Westerns such as horseback riding, stampedes, and brawls. Additionally, Noemie was the sort of strong, independent, and feisty female typical of the author's leading ladies.

I found it easy to connect with Ruth and Noemie—a bond that strengthened with each new challenge they faced. Their fortitude and love for one another mirrored that in scripture, as did Montgomery Boaze's desire to protect and provide for these widows, however, Noemie's bitterness (mentioned in Ruth 1:20) took on a life of its own in this story. Much of the time I found it humorous, but in the end, Blanton uses it to drive home a strong message to believers.

A truly heartwarming story, Carolina Homecoming is a perfect selection regardless of the season.

Wonderful characters that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this as to the similarity to Ruth and Naomi in the Bible. I couldn’t figure out how this would all tie together, but what a surprise it was! I was engulfed in the pages of this book, I couldn’t sit it down. The reader is definitely taken on an emotional roller coaster ride, leaving your mind spinning. Sweet clean romance that leaves you breathless and wanting the story to never end. Heather Blanton does it again by giving us another #1 ranking book!
Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

While this story Is part of a series, it will read well as a stand-alone. After the death of James Grant, the story will begin in Maryland and will have Ruth following her mother-in-law back to South Carolina. The story takes place in 1863, during the middle of the Civil War.

“All right. Then let us put our hand to the plow and not look back.”

The story is a clean Christian-based historical tale that parallels the story from the Bible in the book of Ruth, where daughter-in-law Ruth follows Naomi back to her people. In this story, Ruth is an Irish girl but has nothing left in Ireland and chooses to follow her mother-in-law Noemie back to her home place in Oconee County, South Carolina. What a shock when they arrive in town to hear that her cousin, Leroy Heyward, has claimed that she sold him her farm.
“Here’s to the homestead on Frying Pan Ridge.”

The story will also bring another friend and a very distant cousin of Noemie’s into the picture, Montgomery Boaze, a neighboring farmer. As this story progresses with mystery, suspense, life and death danger, murder, and issues, Montgomery will protect Noemie and Ruth.
Ruth observes Leroy and doesn’t trust him, whereas others try to give the benefit of the doubt. He is slick, underhanded, and his true character will be revealed as the story continues.

“I think he doesn’t say what he means. It’s as if he says one thing, but the look in his eyes says he’s thinking of something different. Something—hateful.”

The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. It has deceit, lies, vengefulness, and hatred. It will have two people developing and trying to fight their feelings because of an age difference—well, it bothers one of them more than the other. It is of bitterness and blaming God for the losses, and just like the prodigal son, it will have healing and returning to the Father.

I enjoyed the characters, especially Noemie, Ruth, and Montgomery. The interactions and scenarios.

Like a Bible story

Even the names are similar.
Noemmie was widowed the first time when their son was young, then fell in love with a man willing to be a father to her son. Her son marroed. Her 2nd husband died. Then the Civil War took her son. She and her DIL had grown close, a lot of it because before the start of the war, the son/husband was always traveling for his father's businwss. Now, there is nothing for them in Maryland. Noemmie wants to go back to her home in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains, and urges her Irish DIL to go back to Ireland. But for Ruth, there is no longer any reason to return to Ireland. She says she will go with Noemmie back to Noemmie's home, and so she does.
The rest of the book recounts the tale of 2 cousins of Noemmie, one good and one evil, how evil the evil cousin really is, how sensitive to age the good cousin is - the age between him and the younger Ruth; and gives a snapshot of life at that time, with roving bands of deserters from the Army, content to beg, harass, steal, and threaten local womem on their own due to the war; and how reluctant they are to work for a living. There are some regular "you go, girl" momemts, courtesy of Noemmie and her scatter gun, and some moments of sheer terror, nasty actors, good guys, and politicians, who have apparently always been a bit of a mess in America (and likely every other country that has them).

I love Heather Blanton’s books and recently stumbled on Carolina Homecoming, part of the Thanksgiving Books and Blessings series. Inspired by the biblical book of Ruth, the story is set mid-Civil War. Vivid description immersed me in the sights, smells, and sounds of traveling to the deep south in a time of war. In the biblical version, Naomi is somewhat of a secondary character, but the author gives her a feisty personality and backstory of her own. As quick with her rifle as she is with a witty comeback, Naomi is a sharp contrast to Ruth’s gentle and reticent manner. Montgomery Boaze is a swoon-worthy hero who set my heart beating. A kind man with a history of being not-so-pleasant before he became a believer, he is “seasoned, but not too salty,” as Ruth indicates. There is some violence in the story, but it is neither gratuitous nor graphic. Messages of forgiveness, grief, and God’s sovereignty are woven throughout without being preachy. A book I will read again.

This was my first novel by Blanton, and I look forward to reading more from her. Carolina Homecoming is "inspired by" the Book of Ruth. Readers should not expect a close retelling of that biblical story; there are many departures. But that didn't lessen my enjoyment. A lovely romance.

Beautifully Told

Ruth as in the book of the Bible was definitely influential in this retelling of a story about the love between a mother-in-law and her son’s widow. Their is also the redemptive hint of the story of Job. Though this telling is fictional and set during the civil war between the states the love of a kinsmen redeemer is told in a fashion of seeing grief, guilt and pretty much every human emotion in the characters Heather Blanton shares with us in Carolina Homecoming. A definitely well written story.

Ruth, Naomi and Boaz Civil War Times

I have always loved the story of Ruth and Naomi and Heather Blanton's version brings it to life! Montgomery Boaz indeed becomes the kinsman redeamer but it is a fascinating take to get there. Noemi is a little spitfire and won't take anything from anyone! I just wish I knew how to pronounce this Naomi's name! Noemie
This is one great read!

Highly Recommend This Book

I really enjoyed this book and its comparison to the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. It was well-paced, had good character development, and kept my interest all the way through. My only negative for this book is all the tragedy and death that took place, but I can see the reason for it. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a good, solid Christian fiction.

This was a fantastic Historical Christian fiction book. Inspired by Biblical Ruth, the Southern take on this was believable and the characters heartwarming. I was able to listen to an audio version of this book via Spotify, but it did not in any way affect my review. I was also provided with a copy of this book by the author as a result of being a Winner of an audiobook giveaway. All opinions are my own.

Another great story!

First of all I loved that you explained the story of Ruth and Naomi from the Bible since everyone may not be familiar with it at the beginning!
As to your writing, it's hard to follow some author's action or fighting scenes but I could follow and picture yours with no problem.
Enjoyed the love story too!

Absolutely Enjoyed it.

I loved the fact that it catered to me as a Christian. Of course I disliked the killings but, it's such a beautiful story, the author kept me reading late into the night. I enjoyed it so much I gave it 5 stars because it's a great story and parallels with the book of Ruth in the bible. I definitely would recommend this book!

A fun and engaging read that kept me laughing. I lived in Oconee County, SC. Heather Blanton did an excellent job taking me back to old haunts and keeping me on my toes with phrases such as "gave her the stink eye." A truly enjoyable read.

A different Ruth

Ruth’s mother-in-law learned that God does answer when we call Him. Ruth learned that she really would be able to lobe again.

Author Heather Blanton pens an inspirational frontier novel set during the Civil War, inspired by the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi set during the Civil War.

In Carolina Homecoming, widowed Noemie decides to return to her small South Carolina hometown following the death of her son. Her son’s widow Ruth accompanies her. When they get to her farm in Walhalla, they find the farmhouse deserted and fallen into disrepair -- as well as no sign of the caretaker she left in charge years earlier. Apparently he died a few years earlier, and a cousin claimed it as his own.

But a distant relative, widower Montgomery Boaze -- an older and wealthy farmer -- helps them get the ranch back in running order, and he appoints himself their protector. Together, they face the battle over her land which had been left unattended while Noemie lived up North.

Blanton is an excellent storyteller, providing good character development and descriptive narratives, allowing the reader to picture themselves in the midst of the story. Known for her inspirational Westerns, Blanton tells an engaging story in this rendition of the familiar biblical story. She even adds a brief introduction of the biblical story of Ruth for readers who may be unfamiliar with it. Needless to say, the faith element is strong and evident, at the same time, it is not preachy.

Ruth was not just a Northern girl (avoiding the usual North vs. South storyline), she was an Irish immigrant -- and that was a welcome twist. The relationship between Ruth and Montgomery is May-December romance (he is about fifteen years older)  and that was delightful to watch unfold. . This book would be appropriate for older teens as well as adult readers.

Recommended for adult collections in school and public libraries, as well as Western fans, and fans of second chance clean romances.

Disclaimer: Book reviews are my honest opinion of books I either purchased or received free of cost from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write reviews, nor to even post positive reviews.

I loved this take on the story of Ruth, Boaz and Naomi. It is fresh and fun. Noemie (french spelling of Naomi) is SPUNKY! Author Heather Blanton, picked up on the strength and, dare I say, grit of this biblical character. This was so refreshing. The time period puts it as historical western. This too is fun and fresh. Of course, in pioneer days, women didn't have many rights and really had to fight for what was rightfully theirs.

Yes, you'll quickly recognize the connection between Boaz and Ruth, but the overall theme is really about coming home physically, and spiritually. I found this story just as beautiful as the one in my bible. Bravo!

For a Christian story based on the bible book Ruth, this book has surprisingly little in the way of Christianity in it. The Ruth in this story is Irish, and it could easily have been represented that she was raised in "the old ways" and leaned toward pagan worship, as did the Moabites from which the biblical Ruth came; but nothing of this nature is hinted.
There is a preacher, who later becomes Noemie's (representing the biblical Naomi) love interest; but although we are told that Ruth and Noemie begin attending church services, we never actually go with them to one. This would have been an excellent setting for providing some scriptural admonition, but the opportunity is skipped.
In the bible, the unnamed kinsman-redeemer whose claim comes before that of Boaz is not represented as being evil or malevolent. He simply looks out for his inheritance by not taking the widows as wives. But his parallel in this book is all evil and sneaky underhandedness, and winds up being killed by Montgomery. This is a pretty serious deviation from the bible story.
All in all, I was not that impressed.
As the Chirp Books narrator, Leonor A. Woodworth does a good job. But it's always so strange to hear the voices of men who should have deep, rich tones being rendered as raspy whispers, I guess because it's beyond the lady narrator's range to do deep rich. Oh, well... I liked her rendering of Ruth's Irish inflection.

In this well-crafted tale loosely based on the Biblical book of Ruth, Heather Blanton offers her readers a change of scenery from her usual western settings. Carolina Homecoming takes place during the Civil War era and features Ruth Grant who has lost her husband in the war. Her mother-in-law Noemie has also been recently widowed and decides to return to her home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ruth chooses to accompany her, hoping they can both find the peace and healing they so desperately need.

Upon their arrival at Noemie’s farm, they discover that things are not what they expected. As they experience one mishap after another, it is apparent that something sinister is taking place and one particular person is at the top of the suspect list. Montgomery Boaze, a wealthy widower does everything in his power to help and protect the two women. Those familiar with the Biblical story will have a pretty good idea where the story is headed but Carolina Homecoming has a few twists and turns of its own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I know I can count on Heather Blanton to provide me with a story that has just the right blend of drama, mystery, action, and romance to keep me happy. Be sure to give this one a look.

I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book provided by the author. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.

Carolina Homecoming is author Heather Blanton's captivating contribution to Thanksgiving Books and Blessings series. Loosely based on the Biblical account of Ruth and Naomi, readers are introduced to newly widowed Noemie and her widowed daughter-in-law Ruth as they are returning to Noemie's former home. I loved the characters, strong and resilient, despite the destruction and disturbing provocations they discovered upon their homecoming. A bit of a mystery, a sweet romance, lovely word pictures that bring the reader right into the scenes, all blended with a thread of faith in a God who protects and directs one's paths. Blanton knows how to tell a story and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Another great book by Heather Blanton, "Caroline Homecoming: A romance inspired by the Book of Ruth and Naomi from the Bible." .

Naomi and Ruth lost their husbands. Naomi wanted to go home to her farm. Ruth was Naomi daughter-in-law, Ruth told Naomi ' wherever thy goeth I shall go also'. So they both went to live on Naomi farm.

In this story Naomi is renamed Noemie. This was a lovely sweet book, This ladies get to farm which needs some work on the house, fences and gardens. When rested they work on the farm house and then tackled the gardens that is full of weeds.

There are some twists and turns in this story that make the story exciting and interesting. The book was well written with loveable characters (except for a few). I enjoyed reading this clean, wholesome romance. I recommend this story of all ages young and older.

The author has penned a sweet and heartwarming story that is based on the biblical story in the Book of Ruth. This is Ruth and Montgomery's story, as well as Noemie, Ruth's mother-in-law. Ruth and Noemie, after both of them are widowed, head back to Noemie's former home in the Blue Ridge Mountain area. This story has lots of action, surprises, evil, dishonesty, murder and romance. Will both women be able to find a HEA after experiencing so much grief. Be sure to read this story to find out. I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it. I know you will enjoy it too.

What a wonderful afternoon I’ve had reading this great story. The writing is superb; the story-line is excellent; and, the characters are so “real” I was part of the book. With the Civil War so sad in our history, this author gave me a smile while writing about the average people in and average town down south and how they lived. Ruth is so gracious and Noemie is so caring, that I fell in love with them and wanted to be part of their unity in life and faith. Thanks for a great book!

I absolutely loved this book. The story keeps your attention from page one to the end. It reminds you of the book of Ruth in the bible. The love and devotion of a woman and her daughter in law, how they stay together and take care of one another and with luck both of them may find find happiness. I definitely recommend reading this. Its a fast paced, clean Christian book.
