Mosse authored 25 books on a variety of fields, from English constitutional law, Lutheran theology, to the history of fascism, Jewish history, and the history of masculinity.

He was perhaps best-known for his books and articles that redefined the discussion and interpretation of Nazism.

Il razzismo è una risposta semplice, efficace ed estremamente adattabile a una molteplicità di problemi, domande, paure.
Questa è la tesi di George Mosse, esposta nel libro con grande efficacia e chiarezza.
Sin dal XVIII secolo, miti e stereotipi razzisti erano diffusi in Europa, sia a livello della cultura popolare, sia negli ambienti intellettuali.
Il pensiero razzista si è nutrito di elementi sempre diversi, convergendo verso il risultato di creare una serie di miti, ossia di racconti fantastici utili a dare una spiegazione pseudorazionale, a volte pseudoscientifica, alle inquietudini della società europea in trasformazione.
Fra queste, la più semplice ed immediata è la creazione di un nemico, diverso dalla maggioranza dei membri della comunità, a cui addossare ogni colpa.
Il risultato supremo di questa lunga e multiforme opera di penetrazione culturale è l'affermazione del nazionalsocialismo tedesco.
Il nazismo hitleriano era una forza politica con una visione del mondo millenaristisca, essenzialmente basata su una teoria razziale biologistica.
In questo, Hitler si rivelò erede del razzismo sette\ottocentesco di matrice illuministica.
Ma il nazismo fu altrettanto fortemente influenzato da un complesso di credenze misteriche e occultistiche, prevalentemente legate all'immaginario culto degli Ariani (come noto, molti dei principali gerarchi nazisti erano membri di società segrete come la Thule).
Un complesso di fattori ne consentì il successo in Germania, paese che più di altri presentava le condizioni favorevoli per la vittoria: fra esse, la principale per Mosse è il trauma per la sconfitta militare nella prima guerra mondiale, unita a un clima culturale particolarmente incline ad accettare teorie basate sulla presunta superiorità razziale e spirituale dei tedeschi, unici discendenti degli Ariani.
Ideale primo passo per lo studio delle opere di Mosse sull'argomento, il libro è tuttora un formidabile compendio di pensieri e riflessioni, che è bene tenere a mente ogni volta che, magari leggendo una delle tante notizie di "nera", siamo tentati di cercare nel titolo un aggettivo che ci rassicuri ("rumeno", "rom", "extracomunitario").

The book presupposes a familiarity with Pietism and the Enlightenment, and it's not toilet reading -- it's dense. That said, it's an excellent introduction to ideological racism, the exterminationist, Manichaean counterpart to the violent but exploitive racism that prevailed in the United States and apartheid South Africa. Read it especially if you're confused by the distinction I just drew. Also read it to learn how ideological racism was a utopian and even collectivist reaction to Enlightenment modernity, like socialism, but of course with a different pathological presentation.

Ammetto che da grande fa dell'autore mi aspettavo di più da questo testo. Purtroppo lo stile è estremamente asciutto ed elencativo, e mancano i suoi colpi di genio letterari.
Nel mio piccolo ho notato un errore sul culto di S. Simonino, che già nel '90 non veniva più celebrato. Ma chiaramente se avessi una padronanza delle fonti come quella di Mosse non scriverei recensioni su GR :D

Dudo entre 2'5 y 3. Se nota que es un texto que tiene mucho tiempo y, por tanto, muchos conceptos con definiciones superadísimas. En su momento, supuso un aporte increíble a la teorización del racismo como sustento ideológico del Holocausto y, precisamente, ahí está una parte de su utilidad e importancia. Es un punto de referencia que no puede leerse sin los estudios más actualizados sobre el tema, porque deja muchas cuestiones que hoy en día tenemos consolidadas de forma muy ligera o incluso problemática. Pero, que si se lee con ese enfoque crítico y actualizado, puede ser útil en la formación y la investigación sobre la historia del racismo.

This both a history of European racism and of the stigmatization and ultimate extermination of Jews (I dislike 'anti-semitism' as the category includes peoples not Jewish). As regards racism, some attention if paid to the skin-prejudices of many of the imperialist powers engaged in the exploitation of Africa, primarily France and Britain, but the focus of the book is on the history of the persecution of the Jews from the eighteenth century and culminating with the genocidal efforts of the Nazis. Significant attention is paid to how Hitler himself came to his delusional beliefs.

Exemplary examination of the history of racism in Europe. The way Mosse discussed different conceptions of race and racism — mystical, theological, aesthetic, scientific, liniguisitic, nationalism — and connected them was well done.

The European version of "Whiteness of a Different Color", respectively. A hard-to-read account of European Racism, set up in a way that took me a very long time to get through it. Read slowly and with a lot of time, this could be a very interesting and informative book. I had to just skim through most of it in the end.

Argumentos um bocado confusos devido à linguagem utilizada (por exemplo termos como "completamente" ou "não se pode" são usados sem específicar que se refere a um caso muito concreto e não geral) e esta edição do livro possui várias erratas pequenas. de resto um bom livro acadêmico.

Excellent work of non-fiction. Four stars, because I missed some information I hoped to find inside, but overall, it was extremely informative.
