A string of failures has brought Devin to her knees. Refusing to ask for help, even when she needs it most, she’s willing to do just about anything.
Salvation comes in a newspaper clipping. A job at Wicked, the city’s premiere nightclub.
Now she’s caught up in their games, caught between the two Alphas who are much more than mere owners. While one doles out cruelty, it’s the promise within the deep brown eyes of the other that keeps her from running.
They’ve offered her a choice. One that she can’t refuse.
If she’s willing to pay the price.
Desperate is Book One in the Cost of Desperation series, a raw and thrilling dark Omegaverse tale. This full length novel contains dark themes and complete power exchange. Scenes are not glossed over, which may be distressing for some readers. This series is set in the same world as the Omega's Destruction series with many events happening within the same timeline. While it can be read separately, reading both series will give a richer experience.
Eva Dresden writes dark romance that lives up to its name with every turn of the page. Her heroines are tragic and strong, her heroes are anything but, and tearing characters apart to see what makes them really tick is a favored past time.
I'm ready. I have a feeling this is going to be sordid.
Update: It was indeed sordid. 3.85 stars. Full review to come.
My quick review:
I don't have it in me to write comprehensive warning, but know this story takes place in the same world as the author's Omega's Destruction trilogy, starting with Broken. In this world Omegas have no rights. They are the lowest rung of society and are constantly subjugated to degradation, harrassment & crime of all kinds. Obligatory trigger warnings for noncon, dubcon, violence, & abuse. If you liked the author's Omega's Destruction trilogy you'll likely enjoy this. If you didn't like Broken by this author and are wondering if the author decided to write something lighter, the answer is no, she didn't.
There's not a romance at all in this book, and while I can kind of see the stepping stones for a romance between the two Alphas & Omega...I'm still not sure how they'll agree to a MfM relationship. I'm interested in seeing where the author goes with this. Beau seemed obsessed with the heroine at first, but the shit that went down at the end? It was worse than what Er'it in Rite of the Omega & Tobias in Broken ever did. It was kind of....gross? I think Beau's lack of possessiveness will not be popular with all readers. I have no idea how the author plans on redeeming him. I always have this thought when reading this author's books though, and she somehow pulls the romance through by the last book.
Trigger Warnings: Safety: Cliffhanger & HEA: Wordcount: 70K. This is full-length.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I have waited to read this book since 2020. Just to give it a 2 star.
Anyway, these men are abusive rapists a-holes. I hate them and I don't know how this author going to redeem them or maybe she won't even do that at all.
Maybe it's not the type of omegaverse I would like. It's not even the fun fucked up.
Desperate omega has a photoshoot and gets a job at a club as a gogo dancer. She doesn't want to rely on anyone and wants to be completely independent against the nature of an omega.
Re-read. Devin is an omega who tries to make it as a beta but is beat down at every turn. If you like angsty omegaverse books with anti-hero alphas, then you'll like this one.
I don't even need to read it to know it will be good. For starters, Eva Dresden wrote it. And not just that, but it's omegaverse too.
I mean, it's like the perfect combo.
Now I just have to wait until the end of summer to get it.
I can do this!
NEW REVIEW:
Bo's a dick.
There. I said it.
OFC we knew Bo's a dick from the oiginal snippet in , but damn.... that's too much.
I spend 98% of the book imagining him die in around 200 different ways, each more painful that the last.
That does not mean i didn't love the book (cause Eva Dresden rocks and her writing style is right up my alley), but readers be warned, this book is DARK.
If u want a cute, fluffy, omegaverse story, run and run fast cause this ain't one.
Desperate is an incredibly visceral, painful little book. I might rate it higher later, but only if in the sequel things start improving for poor Devin. This is an Eva Dresden novel, so it's not like I didn't expect the main character to go through something hellish before she's able to get her happy ending, but this novel might be her darkest yet.
I'm very curious how the author is going to create a light at the end of the tunnel for Devin. Both of the male leads are literal human garbage, so I don't know how she's going to redeem either of them, but I'm interested to see how that would look. This story is completely absent of any romance novel tropes so I can't even guess where it's going. I'm just going to trust that I'm going to really appreciate the ending of this series, even if the first book offers nothing but bleakness and desolation.
I thought Rey was going to be dark romance hero material for a second there, but he turned into such a coward. Beau's more straightforwardly monstrous, but I can't for the life of me understand Rey's character. He's a total enigma. Crossing my fingers we get his POV in the sequel.
TW: Non-con, physical abuse, attempted suicide, lots and lots of slut shaming (seriously why are all the women in this novel besides Devin straight up sociopaths with no empathy)
I like dark omegaverse and this book was intensive. Both alphas are so bad and Beau was just downright evil. I rubbed my hands with glee at the beat down he got at the end.
Things are so bad for Devin she is just hoping for the end at this point but looks like Beau is only going to make it worse 😬
I can happily report that Eva Dresden is back and she isn't taking any prisoners. It's been a little while since her last release and without a shadow of a doubt Desperate was definitely worth the wait.
Currently I hate Beau with a passion. Staking that man over a colony of fire ants before massively disturbing their nest is too good for him. May he perish in the most painful and drawn out of ways. The jury is out on Rey. He's a decent enough alpha but the sheer fact that he allowed Beau to continue to abuse Devlin sort of soured my feelings for him. However I would be satisfied with applying a cheese grater to his skin before dipping him in a sack of salt.
Now Devin, I had to let go of despising her stupid-to-the-point-of-insanity independent spirit. Yes, I get that you want to make it on your own but girlfriend but we could ALL see how badly on a downward spiral your life was. So do you take a little bit of help from a friend? Oh no! That would be too degrading, instead you sell your body to two alpha's because, yeah, that makes sense. Once I got over wanting to slap her even more than Beau did, I actually quite liked her. But I prefer my strong females to be clever and sensible, not so stubborn as to appear to have a death wish. Perhaps if we'd had a little more backstory that really explained why she was that way would have allowed me to accept it more easily.
This wasn't quite so purple prose, though the sex scenes still have a hazy feel, focused more on emotion impact and snatched impressions rather than a clear sequence of events. Many of those scenes are very dubious in consent and quite violent in nature too. As with Dresden's Omega's Destruction series, this book is quite disturbing at times and readers should proceed with caution. This also ends on a cliff-hanger, though don't let that put you off buying and reading this delightfully depraved omegaverse story.
Had I read this a year or two ago it would have easily hit 5 stars, but my reading tastes have changed, and despite this being just as good as Broken it didn't quite tick every box for me. I've returned to my first loves of fantasy and Sci-Fi, and I felt that Desperate just lacked in the plot department. How many ways can the heroine be abused just wasn't enough story, despite that having been more than sufficient in Dresden's previous work. So that was entirely down to me and I won't hold it against the book.
For those who love dark omegaverse then I highly recommend Desperate to you.
I Give this Book a 4-4.5-5/5 Star Rating, But I personally need to list this as 5 Stars.
This is Omegaverse, if you don’t know what it is, please take the time to look it up before you judge this book. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s DEFINITELY Mine. *Grins*
Darkverse(?): Definitely! Lite-verse(?): Definitely Not 😆
Cliffhanger(?): Absolutely! And I’m biting at the bit to know what’ll happen next! 😃
Relationship Type: Honestly at this point I actually have Zero Clue, and I’m loving it!
This is in the same universe as the ‘Omega's Destruction’ Series, but can absolutely be read on its own.
I’m obsessed with this specific universe, it dark and gritty and is now one of my top favorites, I have no idea where Devin’s story is going to go, have no idea who she’ll end up with, it’s seriously a really good book that I would’ve devoured in one day if I didn’t have to sleep at some point 😆 I don’t have a clue what is in store for Devin but I can’t wait to find out!
Dark(?): I’m an Avid Reader of Dark to Extremely Dark Reads, so this book may be darker for others. I will personally list this book in my 3.5-4/5 range, cause some actions are said in past-tense it for me needs to be listed in the 3.5 range. But that doesn’t at all take away from the darkness that is in this book.
Heat/Dark Heat: 4.5/5 Knotting: Does Occur. Nesting: Does Occur. Purring: Does Occur. Biting: Does Occur. Mate Marking(?): Not entirely sure. Going into Heat(?): Does Occur. Slick(?): Does Occur. Obsessive Behavioral Signs: Not Sure Yet. Group Heat Scenes(?, if RH): MFM scene Alpha Dominance and/or Aggression(?): Does Occur Omega Submissive Behavior(?): Does Occur.
Romance: This is kinda tough to figure out, no Romance but there is Minor Affection.
Drama: 5/5 Suspense: 5/5
Pacing: a Mid-Mid Fast
I’m too eager for the next book! This is so addictive! Jumping into Book 2!
So this one is pretty dark. I can't say much without giving away spoilers. I will say I absolutely despise Beau and I don't much care for Rey either right now although the jury's still out on him. My hopes got up a few times with him and then he let me down. I really felt for Devin and wouldn't want to be an omega in her world. There was a major cliffie at the end too. I'm almost scared to read book two.
Eva Dresden pulls us into the bleak and painful world of the Omega, in Desperate, book 1 in her The Cost of Desperation series.. From the start we see a chronicle of abuse towards Devin, as she attempts to find her own way in the world, without becoming dependent upon an Alpha to take care of her.
Unfortunately, this decision only brings her more grief and pain, as she is ruthlessly abused by two Alphas, who involve her in a tug of war of power.
If you are looking for any bright, happy, silver lining in this story, you will not find one. There is no love. There is no hope. This book is beyond dark, and there is no promise of a reprieve for Devin.
Many triggers can be found in the story of physical, sexual, mental, and emotional abuse.
This is a cruel book to read. There are lot of scenes which may be a trigger to some readers. It’s a twisted story with a subject matter that is extremely uncomfortable to delve into. But the writing is good and the story is riveting though dark and disturbing.
Holy Hell ladies! Eva knocked this latest book in the Alderbrook series out of this world! Its just as dark and depraved as the Omega Destruction series is!
Beau.. there is nothing for it... I love to hate him! at the start of the book he comes across as being a rough asshole alpha... but then as you get deeper into the story you realize just how vicious and cruel he is.. and since this is the start of the series... you know its only going to get worse!
Rey... I am so conflicted with him...on the one hand he is a sweet and gentle guy for an alpha.. not like sickening sweet.. but for an asshole alpha he can be sweet and gentle.. but he knows the kind of guy his friend Beau is and he sees the things Beau does to the omega and rarely steps in to stop it.. so for that I really want to strangle him... okay lets be serious.. I want to kill him for that!
Devin.. lord I already feel for this omega.. She is so damn stubborn... Not asking for help from her friends and family when she needed it the most is what got her into this situation! The omega is in a world full of hurt because of her pride and stubbornness... I almost threw my kindle at one point because I got so frustrated with her stubbornness! I'm not going to give away any spoilers... but I can understand where she was coming from at that point... but I still wanted to wring her stubborn little neck for not at least trying!
I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for the next one in the series to get here so that I can devour it! God I need to know how this story is going to play out!
I can certainly count on Ms. Dresden to pull on every emotional string I've got. Desperate is intensely dark, emotionally gripping and, simply, quite brutal. I was both horrified and couldn't look away from the downwards spiral Devin was falling victim to. I was also frustrated with the choices that landed her in the predicament she found herself in. In the world that views Omegas as nothing more than playthings without many rights, Devin managed to carve out a different path for herself for a time. But her pride and refusal to take help lead her down a dark path where she finds herself at the mercy of Beau and Rey. While Beau appears to be cruel and evil in the worst way, I was almost as mad at Rey for what he was allowing to happen. I have faith in Ms. Dresden't ability to make me fall in love with him in the end and I saw glimpses of the man he could be for Devin, but, for now, the jury is still out. This book is full of triggers, so it's definitely not for sensitive readers. There's of course, lots of darkly steamy encounters that one would expect from an omegaverse romance, but there's no romance yet and I have a feeling that we're going to have to work to get there. I loved being back in Alderbrook and can't wait to see what happens next! This one is definitely a must for all fans of DARK omegaverse.
Wow!!! Eva is back and back with a bang!!! Unbelievable story. Not for the faint of heart.. **Amazing dark Omegaverse romance**
Poor Devin is desperate and completely screwed with these two alphas. This first book in the series has really set the tone for the serious predicament that Devin has gotten herself into. Beau is just a ruthless bastard who could care less about anyone but himself. He is savage and from the moment Devin finds herself in his arms she is done for. So many times I was screaming at my kindle reading this book but it was SOO good!! I love the dark story and the heartbreaking situation that Devin finds herself in. Eva is not shy or apologetic when it comes to her Omegas. They go through some stuff and it is such an epic journey. I have more questions than answers and I am so intrigued and ready for book 2. I need to know what happens!
Rey... Man, come on!! I need you to buck up and get with it.. I kind of have a love-hate relationship with this alpha HAHA. I am rooting for him but he is gonna work to get her back. Does he want her? Does her not? Book 2 Rey finds his big boy alpha pants and suits up to get his woman back!! This story is classic Eva and it is truly fantastic! She leads you on this journey of emotions and takes you through the trenches with her Omegas before giving you the ending you so desperately want. Amazing story.. I can't wait for book 2..
OMG! I don't know if this will effect others as it did me but I needed tissues at the ready. To me it was gut wrenching but in a good way. I felt the characters which doesn't happen very often. So sit back and read, enjoy the trip. Devin was desperate. She is an Omega, educated and refined. The status of Omegas is not good. Whereas Devin wants to work and make way through the world as others thought of her a nothing more than an object for sex. After a string of failed attempts at holding a job she is forced to enter in a contract with Beau and Rey. To be at their beck and call. Beau is violent and abusive with her but Rey is not quite the same. He's less abusive. As Beau continues to hurt her, Rey tries to be kinder to her. Devin is at the breaking point. All she wants now is to die. Her body is racked with bruises and wounds. How much more can she take? Rey takes her away from Beau. What is in store for her now? We'll have to wait for the next book to find out.
This isn't one of those light, fluffy Omegaverse stories. It's brutal, dark, captivating, and will leave you Desperate for book 2. It does end on a cliffhanger, but book 2 is expected soon so don't feel like you should wait. I recommend diving into this right now! The gap between books will give you time to read something about unicorns and rainbows, or something with an HEA. This one is neither of those things. This story gutted me, and I didn't expect anything less. From beginning to end my emotions feel like they were torn out of me. I wanted to sob, rage, and surrender in the same way Devin does. I wanted to scream and throw things, but I also wanted to curl up in a corner and just cry. Or at least reach in and protect Devin from the hellish world she lives in. This emotional connection is what makes Ms. Dresden one of my favorite dark authors. She never disappoints. NEVER.
Raw, Delicious emotion. So classic Dresden! This book is steeped in darkness with a splash of hope! The raw emotion of this book is fire. The recurring destruction of Devin's will and the abuse she takes is brutal. There is no escape from it, no reprieve. It gave me real Destroyed vibes. I kept hoping for Rey to step in, view her as a person, to vindicate himself, but it never came. Maybe the next book... Then Ashley's disgust and complete lack of understanding just gutted me. She discarded their friendship so quickly, forgetting all the hardships Devin has been through. Ugh, so heartbreaking! And did anybody squeal at the mention of Kahler(aka Tobias)? I can only hope Devin finds the comfort of an Alpha like him. I can't wait to find out!
Love this authors books! They may be some of the darker ones I've read, but she knows how to pull you into a story and not let go. And I always get a book hangover after reading any of her books. So of course she is an automatic read for me and when I saw Desperate was coming out I got so excited!
I have to say she went above and beyond my expectations. I can't wait to see where Devin's story leads. She is too proud for her own good. And tho all she wants is to be a self sufficient Omega, she ends up trading her freedom away, because of her pride. I know she has a lot to go thru before she finally gets her happy ending, and I will probably cry along with her, but that is part of what makes this authors books SO GOOD! You feel like the characters are real and feel along with them.
Its been awhile since we've been back in this universe Ms. Dresden has created. I've forgotten how dark and depraved these Alphas can be. Devin has worked so hard to be more than what her dynamic dictates. But in a world where Omegas are seen as less than all dynamics, she learns the hard way what pride has in store for her. In her desperation to not be a burden to her only true friend left, she does the one thing she shouldn't, putting herself at the mercy of not one but two Alphas. And as much as I know she'll be able to pull herself through it, I'm still hurting along with her every minute of it and angry at her for her naivete of it. I can't wait to find out what's next cause that ending, that doesn't bode well for Devin at all.
Once again I find myself sucked into Eva's world of darkness and turmoil. Our guide this time is Devin, an omega of some intelligence. She is smart and careful and determined to make it on her own. And by make it, I mean survive. This world is not kind to omegas. They are 3rd class citizens and staying out of the clutches of an uncaring Alpha is not always possible. Watching a smart and capable woman get trampled and beat down by circumstance and lack of acceptance is always tough and this story is no exception. I know in my heart that Devin will survive, but I am uncertain what will become of her dream of independence.
Not for the faint hearted and not for anyone who wants flowers and lots of love and hearts. Very similar to omegas destruction series. This one is gritty and there’s a lot of violence. For sure not for everyone. My biggest issue is there are a lot of confusing scenes with a lot of information left out leaving me as a reader confused as to what’s going on. Or maybe the point of view is supposed to be that way? Not sure. I’m not quite sure if Devin is tragic or pathetic. Another cliffhanger, which I’m loving a lot less - the reason I took away a star.
Devin doesn't like handouts, she'll struggle as she doesn't want to be seen as lesser being an Omega in a world made for those Alphas and Beta's who'll abuse their power. When an incident at work leaves her jobless, the ad for dancers at Wicked. She leaps without looking, however nothing goes as plans and before she knows it, she's signing a contract with two alphas, Beau who will abuse her body and Rey the other who plays nice only when it suits. will she survive their games as they tangle and purr her into submission? Only one way to find out, keep reading.
This is not hot, steamy etc - its just plain violent - and repetitive. I Like Addison Cain´s omegaverse books so much more - they are also pretty hard core in content, but nothing compared to this drivel. Liking the Alpha to be domineering is one thing, but having the heroine get beaten up repeatedly by the Alpha removes any kind of enjoyment from the book. Somehow the book also manages to be boring, which is quite a feat considering the sense of outrage I was feeling reading about the repeated beatings. Hard pass
This book was so disappointing. All Devin does is cry and whine throughout the entire book. She was to darn prideful and stupid to not let Ashley her only true friend help her, yet she agreed to allow herself to be the personal whore to the two Alpha Beau and Rey which is so much more worse than asking for legitimate help! Give me Quinn any day over Devin, I cannot tolerate her. I tried toime this book, but Devin's character ruined for me, and unfortunately I will not be continuing this series.
In a dark and dangerous world, Devin Haynes plays a risky game for an Omega- living her own life free from an Alpha's control and protection. Naive to the reality surrounding her, it is only a matter of time before Devin becomes the property of another, and she will be demeaned in every sense of the word. The Alphas in Devin's world do not coddle and cherish their Omegas. They break and debase. If you love all things dark with a heavy dose of dub/non con, I highly recommend.
I am definitely adding the second to my list. I love everything I've read from Eva Dresden. The literal only reason for the 4 stars is that I found myself annoyed sometimes by the near constant shrilling, screaming and screeching by Devin.
I know, I totally get it. She had a helluva lot of reasons to be constantly screaming but it started to drown out everything about her. I don't have any suggestions. Otherwise I really enjoyed this
