“No-limit hold ‘em is a simple game to learn, but at the same time it’s an incredibly deep, complex, and dynamic game.…Poker can be very stressful, and it will test players, exposing and magnifying any weaknesses or character flaws....Human beings are emotional creatures, but emotions don’t help live players make good decisions.”

Most poker books focus on the game itself, the how to’s, the math, the nuts and bolts strategy. THE POKER MIND, however examines the mental game, showing a player how to bring their best self to the table, how to avoid going on tilt, and how to make the most out of playing low stakes live poker.

Conlon provides a great glossary of terms at the back of the book, but he doesn’t waste time explaining how to Texas hold ‘em works, which I appreciate. This book is for the player who knows the basics and has experience playing live, in a casino or a home game. His target audience appears to be players whose goal is to use poker as a side hustle, yet this book can benefit players like myself, who play occasionally but want to maximizing the enjoyment and profit from those sessions.

The book contains an introduction and sections on preparing to play, putting your mind into motion, decoding tells, and table image. Therein, he discusses goals and why focusing on what a player can control, i.e. making good decisions, is so important. Conlon goes on to give the player the tools to do just that by creating an optimal physical and emotional environment in the player themselves and showing how to cultivate the right table image. Additionally, he provides insight into the actions of the other players and includes tips concerning poker etiquette. I really liked his focus on the importance of creating a positive environment at the poker table.

The book itself is beautifully illustrated with a soft, soothing color palette and is well organized with an easy to navigate layout. THE POKER MIND is a great resource for casual and more serious poker players to take their game to the next level.

Think of it like this: Your opponents have a breaking point, and each time you raise or do something aggressive, they get closer to that breaking point.

The beauty of poker and how the players play the opponent instead of cards is mesmerizing. The act of interpreting tales and on, really impressed me. This book tells it all.
