Xi He Qing Ling wrote one of my best-loved danmei novels, "Assistant Architect", which I reread again and again. And here, she is still charming as always.
This time she writes about a virtual love story of 2 online gamers. 8 years ago, He Jin and Qin Yang, as characters in an online game, got married without ever knowing the true identities of one another. For some reason, He Jin stopped playing the game without saying goodbye. Now, as a senior college student, he went back to the game, finding his old husband still waiting for him after all these years. At the same time, in the real life, he got confused by the feelings he had for a fellow campus boy one year his junior.
I had so much fun reading this book. I'm just so in love with the author's charm and humor. She had me in stitches all through the book. One thing that kept me from fully enjoying the book is He Jin's character, who I can't get myself to care for. To me, he's a fickle, irritating MC, and I still can't understand the reason why Qin Yang, the hottest boy ever, would stay so loyal to him.
Regardless, this is still a very enjoyable book, one I'm going to read again in the future.
checklist: - emotion✅ - humor✅ - parent-child relationship development✅ - no smut✅ - income inequality✅ - online eggpreg(??!)✅ - high tech robot babies✅ - protag is the wife & pet of the LI in the online game...✅ - light dubcon✅ (sex when protag is drunk, kinda unconscious, & muddled) - slightly toxic relationship✅ (manipulation + lying + one or two threats + )
He Jin used to play an online game eight years ago, but stopped once his mom found out. Now a university student, He Jin starts to play again and discovers that his husband in the game, Fire, never divorced him, and he might or might not think He Jin is a girl.
I really enjoyed the gaming aspect of this book. The parts that were about team battles and new quests in the game were my absolute favorite, so when by the second part of the book the game was barely mentioned, it broke my heart and, inevitably, I lost a bit of interest.
Even so, I was still invested in He Jin and Qin Yang's relationship, but I couldn't help myself and get mad at Qin Yang from time to time. At the beginning of the story, I found his bluntness exactly what He Jin needed, but by the end of it, I couldn't help but think that what He Jin needed was a bit more kindness and understatement. While some of his decisions are frustrating, I think they're realistic considering all his trauma and doubts. I just wish Qin Yang wasn't as violent as he is in the last part of the story.
He Jin's relationship with his mom is extremely complex. I think the portrayal of their relationship is one of the highlights of this book.
Overall, I think the story went for way too long and could've been told in half the chapters. 2.5 ⭐
Me agradó bastante (≧▽≦)
After the first time I read this book, I decided a year later to reread it cuz although I remember disliking it the first time, I kinda forgot why. By the time I remembered why, I was already 90 chapters in so I just kept going. -_-
Compared to another book "Guide on how to fail at online dating" that has a somewhat similar idea of an online gaming relationship built upon falsehood, this book absolutely fails. I understand there are some major differences that result in such different outcomes. The biggest one being: there was nooooo reason for this to drag on for 159 chapters. If I were He Jin, I would have also been super pissed at Qin Yang when I found out he was lying all this time. Cuz it wasn't a short period of time! I know people were fed up with He Jin halfway through but I think the author did extremely well with portraying the struggles and pressures of a controlling unhealthy family dynamic and expectations from society. I got kinda annoyed with both of them at different times but I tried to cut them some slack. After all, He Jin suffered greatly, as did Qin Yang.
That being said.... by the end of it all, this seemingly simple childlike love that started online 12 years ago had turned into a twisted and somewhat unhealthy relationship filled with insecurity and jealousy. Although everything seems fine by the end cuz He Jin is now more open about his love........ I feel that there are telltale signs of problems down the road, such as the possessive behavior of QY, the way he loses his temper rather easily, the unreasonable demands and (hopefully) empty threats of locking He Jin up at home... I mean, I get it. He was abandoned twice for many years both times. He has every reason to feel insecure. But being violent? The rape? The need to control and possess? He might as well turn into He Jin's mother sooner or later.
I'm indecisive. Qin Yang truly gave his all to He Jin, who crushed QY's heart and soul in return. In this way, He Jin really doesn't deserve QY. But then I look at the possessive, unreasonable behavior of QY and the way he manipulates He Jin, on top of the way he selfishly carried on his lies about his identity for 60+ chapters of the book... I don't know if QY deserves HJ. So maybe in the end, the answer is... they deserve each other. Shrugs.
Sigh. Anyway. I just felt the need to write this, partially as a reminder to myself......... but also to inform any others who might be curious.

This was very different from other Chinese BL books I've read in that He Jin is really resistant to getting together with Qin Yang due to his past abuse at the hands of his controlling mother. There were some really sad parts towards the end and it really emphasized how difficult it might be to be gay in China. Of course there were also some cute parts although when they were together it cut to black.
Summary: Qin Yang has been waiting for He Jin to come back to be his wife in an online game for 8 years. He Jin realizes that he's not enjoying his life and wants to let loose a little and decides to return to the game that was previously forbidden by his mother. Love eventually ensues.
I really enjoy books in this (very niche) genre, and Waiting for You Online wasn't an exception.
**Spoilers Ahead**
I loved reading about how the romance between He Jin and Qin Yang slowly develops online and through real life interactions, and was glad the author introduced more complications into their relationship outside of the game. As I was reading, I thought about how completely unrealistic the premise of the story is (for Qin Yang to fall in love with his gaming friend back in middle school and to continue waiting for that person to appear in the game again for so many years), but it's cute.
I'd say the first part of the story is pretty fluffy and focuses on building out the relationship, but the second part gets more serious when He Jin's family brings a bunch of drama to the story. The author had given plenty of hints up to that point that He Jin's mom was mentally and emotionally unstable, so it didn't come as a surprise when she became the next big obstacle for He Jin to overcome. It's a very Chinese concept to be filial to your parents and sacrifice your own happiness for theirs, and I was touched that that's what He Jin tried to do. I really like the idea of breaking of and getting back together again, and was excited to see this trope used in this book.
I know the game mechanics of God Demon are made up, but I love how He Jin's character is a spiritual pet, and a ferret of all things, no less. It conjured up plenty of images of a cute ferret curled around Fire's neck :)
Here's a sappy quote from the story from after they reunited that I enjoyed:
With tears in his eyes and a blurred vision, He Jin looked at Qin Yang’s eyes and asked, “it’s been three years, why would you still…” Why would you still come to look for me and still remember me?
Before He Jin asked, Qin Yang interrupted him, “I had already waited eight years, why is three years a big deal? If you don’t return, I will wait for you forever.”
Actually I think I started reading the ENG translation of this novel quite some time ago but stopped and forgotten about it. So I reread and this time I managed to complete it. To me the plot is very typical and reflective of that certain period when gaming theme novel was very popular and this one is the BL version. In a way almost unbelievable to have such faithful long enduring love but at same time this is why I hv enjoyed reading this haha cause fiction is where all dreams and the unbelievable can come true! If you have no knowledge or interest in gaming then this read may be a bit slow unless you skip by scrolling them away. And since the setting is a bit futuristic I think it is interesting to togther with the gaming and uni students lives. Overall a good read considering I actually re read half of the novel and still did not find it boring or turn off.
#WaitingForYouOnline It has been a long bumpy journey but also an immensely joyful ride! I was quite surprised to find myself not hating He Jin's relunctance in accepting his sexuality. The story was written so reasonably and so I found everything so reasonable and flowing so smoothly! 🌻 I'm so thankful I was introduced to soooo many adorable characters, especially Dead Water and Twig Fence! (2)
I was hooked enough to power through even after it was picked up by a distractingly bad translator after chapter 68, though the new translator was bad enough that I wish I'd known in advance, I wouldn't have started reading in the first place. Starts strong with lots of fun scenes exploring the game world and secret identity shenanigans, exactly as advertised, four stars for the first few chapters, but then the game world/secret identity plots I was reading for were dropped or resolved and the book focuses exclusively on real-world drama for the last 30-ish chapters.
Ruim. Ruim demais.
4 stars Really really sweet. I like that this story set in future but the people still have bad stereotype for gay couple. Usually in BL danmei, it's not realistic how the world just accept their partner. 1 minus star is for how the ML kind of force the MC at the end but i guess that is how he say "i miss you" to the MC 😦
pros: gaming!!! loved the gaming aspect with the game and lore and characters!! ML is rly strong, we stan. also MC becomes strong too!! cute interactions between both
cons: the entire baby thing.... the fact he looks like a “shota” ingame, got pretty dark towards the end?, (r*pe threat, dubcon bc drunk s*x but mc doesn’t seem to mind either so?)
I really enjoyed this story. I was a bit worried when I started it knowing that it was over 1000 pages but in ghe end the pages flew by and I really enjoyed the story. It follows a boy who get back into gaming online and finds out his in game husband never divorced him and is now the top player in the game. A romance then ensues. I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it.
At times, I really enjoyed this, but it really went for way too long. I actually enjoyed reading about the MMORPG/e-sports/ video gaming experience more than the romance. The VR aspects “Holo” seemed really intriguing to me. Unfortunately the character development was lacking for me to completely enjoy this novel.
Loved the first part of the book, the way they meet in reality and in the game! BUT personally I feel the story became a bit boring once they start playing with that Game reality hat... too much game related fillplot that is pretty useless...
Umm... just read something else to save your time and energy! The mc had basically no growth after ch 20, and the ml is a total douchebag! The ml is clearly the same as mc's controlling mother. Was deeply disappointed because the story had a lot of potential!
