3.5/5🌟

This danmei is heavily focused on the business/economy side of the plot, where the MC build his own business empire from scratch after his rebirth, so it can be a bit lengthy in that aspect and it's mostly slice of life so the pacing is also on the slower side. I know some people might find it boring but personally, it's actually very enjoyable to read.

Though the center of the story revolved around the business part, the romance part is equally significant so I wouldn't say that the romance is just a subplot. It's actually my favorite part of the whole story. The chemistry is already there from the moment the MC and ML first met, albeit having an unpleasant first impression. The tension is also very present whilst building up their relationship and their interaction is both hilarious and hot. I also loved how proactive MC is and how the usually stoic ML has a very fun and chaotic inner perspective. They are both very charming in their own way. Reading about them is honestly a blast.

I appreciate how the author created an initially antagonistic character that is spoiled and annoying but gradually turned him as a redeemable character in an appropriate way that makes you root for him in the end. I think majority of the readers will agree with me in that. The found family in this is also something that will melt your heart. Also, the depiction of two types of brother is very realistic in this one.

This has less than 100 chapters but I felt like I've read more because it's compact with so much details. Though I didn't get bored with the business aspect, but because of the detailed exposition, it slows down my enthusiasm with the story. But overall, I enjoyed my time with this one.

I was so worried about starting this story. It seemed too serious and these rebirth stories that have the person succeeding in business felt too easy sometimes. Like, it's not really their accomplishment - it's them already knowing everything that can happen that helps them succeed and makes people (usually incorrectly) think they're geniuses.

But this story is a bit different. It's not just about the Mc forcing his way into becoming a winner at life. It's about him helping his friends avoid bad influences and grow into their strengths. He didn't have a free ride just because he knew what was going to happen - he took chances akin to walking on the edge of a knife. He fought to overcome the pressures that kept him from succeeding in his past life, but at the same time, he didn't retaliate unreasonably or hold irreconcilable grudges. He merely dealt with obstacles in his path and then lived and let live.

I think that's the biggest lesson in this story. Appreciate friendships and don't ruminate over perceived slights. Focusing all the energy on retaliating or maintaining face ultimately just means giving over control of your life to someone else's whims that you have no control over. Rather than letting someone else drive your life, take the wheel and focus on rectifying your own mistakes, reform, and live the best life you can. Who cares if it's not as good as it could be? Who cares if others you dislike are living well? Being able to live at peace with yourself is the ultimate prize.

I also found myself enjoying the glimpse of China in its development. It's a world I grew up in but didn't really understand. It's changed so much, but I remember the allocated housing with shared toilets and tight rooms. I visited mining towns with depressed economy. Reading about the fight to prevent antique smuggling and drugs was interesting - I've seen the "oriental" craze (and the many Chinese artifacts in foreign museums), but reading about fictionalized retelling of the forces that enabled the drain of artifacts and leak of narcotics really personalized it for me. Learning about the dual monetary system and how China navigated the transition from socialism to capitalism was also fascinating. It's hard to say whether the change has all been for the betterment of the country and its people as a whole, but the standard of living has unequivocally made huge leaps forward.

On a lighter note, I loved how the author used this story to highlight how people's inner self might differ from what they present to the world. No one can really understand another person, sometimes not even their close friends, much less casual observers. The many misunderstandings the couple and their family encounter in this story just highlights this fact in the funniest way possible.

4.5 rounded down to 4 stars

This story doesn't have a deep plot, but it's pure entertainment if you enjoy rebirth stories with face slapping and following the main character as they do much better in this life.

In his previous life, our MC, Lin Jingzhe, got screwed over by his family starting from when he was 18 years old and his beloved grandfather died. It set off a whole chain of events that caused him to not go to a good college and not have a good job afterwards. This time, he's reborn 25 years earlier as his 18 year old self, and he makes a series of decisions and gambles that pay off big for him and allows him to live comfortably. Most of his decisions are business-oriented, since in 1990 China is still pretty undeveloped in terms of infrastructure and the internet, so he knows where to invest for prime real estate and knows how quickly the internet takes off in the future.

The ML is Xiao Chi. He doesn't get introduced until a little bit later in the story and is a prominent son of a wealthy business family who also deals in real estate and is a devout Buddhist. The romance starts quite abruptly imo, and clearly the two of them aren't on the same page about their relationship. For example, while Lin Jingzhe thinks they're only friends with benefits, Xiao Chi is already thinking about how to introduce LJZ to his family and marriage. So they're definitely a bit lacking on the communication front. But other than that, they were a cute couple once they actually got past the misunderstandings and got together.

While the romance does play a big role in the story, a lot of the story also focuses on both the MC and ML's businesses as well as the large cast of side characters, so I'd be remiss if I didn't say anything about them. It's rare for me to like all of the side characters in a story, but that was the case here. Lin Jingzhe was raised by his grandfather, and after he passed away, his friends' parents kind of took him in. It was heartwarming to see how LJZ didn't forget about them and brought them along with him in his success journey to succeed in their own ways rather than letting them suffer from the miserable lives they had before.

Plus I really enjoyed everyone in the MC's and Xiao Chi's family, especially Xiao Chi's younger sister who constantly feels disappointed in her older brother compared to her friends' brothers, and Xiao Chi's grandmother who's always stealing and hiding away chocolates XP So much personality for all of the side characters, who make up a very lovable bunch. That's why I didn't mind when the focus of the story often drifted to them, especially later on in the story once the main relationship was established.

There were a ton of comedic moments due to the secretive nature of their relationship. Because their companies are technically rivals in the real estate market, and due to some misunderstandings among their peers about their relationship, everyone is constantly shocked when they find out the truth. Like one of their business enemies was so surprised by the fact that he crashed his car into a frozen lake when he found out. And when he subsequently hired a private detective to follow them and take pictures for blackmail, the detective was shocked by how easy it was for him to take pictures of them in public. Or in the extra chapters when a third business rival tried to sow discontent between their two internet companies, they collapsed when the two companies announced a partnership brought about by the MC and ML rather then one suppressing the other like the business rival was expecting.

Honestly I thought it was a bit unrealistic how hidden their relationship was, since Lin Jingzhe didn't disclose the identity of his partner to any of his family and friends until the marriage was set, but I'm going to overlook this as I understand why the author chose to write it this way.

I'm rounding this story down to 4 stars because while it was entertaining, it wasn't like the story was very intricate or deep. It's the kind of story you read when you're looking for something light and entertaining. For me, it was the perfect read as I was traveling at the time and didn't have much time for reading, so I'd read a couple of chapters here and there.

it is interesting. the timeline sets in the 90s and i actually had fun reading about what happened during that time where we dont have smartphones with us. sending information using fax machine? the way the author describe it really well it almost felt like im living the scene.

the reason why im giving one less star is because in the middle of the storyline i felt impatient so i skipped till the end just to know how they MC and ML ended up together and how they resolves the misunderstanding people around had about their relationship haha.

I would definitely say that I prefer the first half of this novel over than the later half. It actually had a plot at the beginning and I was quite intrigued, however it just goes on to become your usual face slapping later on. Also, that epilogue, istg-

— I can't believe the hypocrisy of Xiao Chi. Bro told his parents that he and Lin Jingzhe were dating for a year when they weren't even in a romantic relationship (also he wanted to marry him at that point!) but then when his sister wants to get married to the man she's dated for three years he starts being such a prick about it. And he even told her she looked ugly in all her wedding dresses!! Sure, he cried and was probably secretly happy, but that doesn't excuse his bad behaviour to his sister on such a joyous occasion.

— The fact that the netizens didn't know that Xiao Chi and Lin Jingzhe were married for 16 whole years is really unbelievable. Like they literally wear matching rings?

— I don't even want to begin talking about how Lin Jingzhe is still being called 'milky' and cute like a rabbit when he's nearing forty. Please. Also how does he not even know how to fold clothes?? Crying because this thirty something year old (not even including his past life) man literally can't do any household chores.

—When did Qi Kai become friends with Lin Jingzhe? I did like his character development, but I have no idea when he and Lin Jingzhe started becoming buddies?
