Informative! Inspiring! We will definitely recommend this book to people experiencing loss!

Loss, unfortunately, is a fact of life. It is often an unpleasant one. Most people, particularly the young, don’t ever think it will happen to them while some adults often gloss it over and may even try to sugar coat it. Many people are not prepared for the fact that even the closest of loved ones may be part of one’s life today, and gone the next. Likewise, a great number of people are not prepared for other kinds of loss, such as loss of things or theft, loss of integrity and loss of reputation. As for the loss a loved one, sometimes it takes a person a whole lifetime to realize the true scope of his/her loss and, just as important, to keep living in spite of that loss. One of the most touching pictures I (James) have seen was that of a little six year old girl (Deovina) standing at the foot of her murdered father’s coffin. The pain of that loss has lasted a lifetime. She (Deovina) still thinks of her father often and says goodnight to him in her prayers.

Regarding loss in the form of death: Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 A.D.) wrote, “It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live” (Jordan, J.L., & Jordan, D.N. (2020). THE ANCIENT WISDOM OF THE STOICS: The Art Of Harnessing The Power Of Thought. Murrieta, CA: Deja Jord, Inc.). So, when loss or death happens, people need to learn how to say goodbye, an important point in this book.

We thank the author for writing about this poignant issue of how to say goodbye in case of loss. The book “The Adventures of Flapjack: Saying Goodbye” is informative and inspiring. The story is about an Australian shepherd named Flapjack and how he stayed by his friend, Fowler, when Fowler was dying. As Fowler said to Flap, “We’re all just passing through before we pass away.” “Dying is part of living, so think of why we live.” Fowler will live on in Flap’s happiest memories as Flap said, “His spirit is always with me and he is in my dreams.”

We like this bittersweet story told in narrative poetry. We also like the illustrations which are charming and colorful.

The book teaches children how to face loss of a loved one. It also teaches adults how to say goodbye to important people in their lives. We will definitely recommend this book to people experiencing loss, whether they are children or adults! There is much to learn from Flapjack and Fowler.

I enjoyed reading the articulate way the author wrote the verse so that children would interpret the meaning of loss through Flapjack. It was done in a kind and caring manner. The author handled this sensitive subject superbly. I commend him.

The illustrations were beautifully done and compliment the story in a way that will capture children's attention.

I would highly recommend this and other books by Dan Cohen and Flapjack.
