Five star reviews for Lost Mission, book 1 in the series:
★★★★★ "Plenty of high octane action sequences ... Readers should expect a twisting and curving wild ride."
★★★★★ "This is a fast moving book that you won’t want to put down."
★★★★★ "A rip roaring tale that does a fine job of world building and character development."
As I was looking for something long to read while I walk, this seemed perfect. 9 books, $0.99! 5 day, 21 miles. Got my money's worth....I guess. The authors are good writers. They write action well. They develop good characters. They write good dialog. The plot has a few nice twists. On the other hand, they lack basic science knowledge. I realize that a certain suspension of credibility is necessary with sci/fi, but basic concepts like the way the solar system and gravity work are essential.
When a large part of this book takes place in a lunar settlement that's divided between the "dark side of the moon" and "the light side," I either assume it's talking about a Pink Floyd song or some clever moveable settlement that drifts across the moon, like the shadow does, or is perhaps tidally locked to the star the planet is orbiting (not sure how that would work!) But, no. This is Earth's moon, and anyone who thinks about how the shadow crosses the moon every month as it goes through its phases SHOULD realize that there is no way a settlement can sit in one place and be part in shadow and part in the light all the time, no more than it would be possible on Earth. Doesn't work. Mercury, yes. The Moon, no. These authors don't grasp elementary astronomical facts. They also don't understand gravity or orbits.
Meanwhile, characters get injured quite severely, and keep going, because, by golly, they're determined. When one human, un-augmented character falls out of a plane, bounces off a building, hits the ground and somehow isn't dead but merely knocked out, I thought, well, ok, I'll play along. But when, with sprained and broken ankles, they get up and carry another person the rest of the chapter...oh, really? I almost gave up and closed the book. And the authors seem to have a fixation with "super-heated" bullets and slugs, like that's a thing. A search finds 34(!) mentions of super-heated bullets and slugs. What, are they shooting wax targets? Regular bullets aren't good enough?
And they vomit. I've never read of so much vomit.
Should I mention the numerous left out or incorrect words, missing punctuation, repeated sentences, and other things that a simple proofreading should catch? Or is that standard with e-books these days?
What can I say? If you think of it as a pulp story written before general science was common knowledge, it's fun, it's fast, it's full of slashing aliens. I got a good 21 miles out of it.
Started off decent and seemed really good. As it went along, it became tedious. Over detailed. It could have left a couple books out & would have been better. Story aS different which was a plus. Good world building and characters.
Overall this was a good story. It has more errors than I would normally expect, but I can accept that. But the dark side of the Moon? In a story copyrighted in 2020? And by two authors, even! Who, in this day and age actually thinks there is a dark side of the Moon? Far side of the Moon, yes. The dark side of the Moon is the side not currently facing the sun! The Moon is tidally locked with Earth. When it orbits the Earth the same side always faces Earth, NOT the sun! I was taught this in elementary school in the 1950s and 1960s. Where were these guys educated? Under a rock somewhere? I tried to let it slide but they just kept going there. As I said, a pretty good story. Dark side of the Moon! Hahaha!
Books start off ok with good action. Around 4 there are the beginnings of several side stories. Then all the flashbacks stare popping up to confuse things. By 6, between following several side stories, all the trips down memory lane, and a dragged out plot line I just give up. Finish the story and be done with it already.
Not sure I’ll finish it. Lots of action, lots of characters, but the story thread seems to get lost. I might give it another star if I do finish all the books and they come together in some way, but based on the first one, I can’t give it more than one.
This series was like reading a monstrously-long adaptation of a comic book--there was action and people who were somewhat interesting, but I kept waiting for depth or any kind of nuance. The authors individually write better stuff, so it's hard not to think if they'd cut this down by about two-thirds and spent more time on the writing--as opposed to producing lots of pages--they could have had a really good 500 page book instead of a weak and mediocre series.
A couple of consistent flaws kept me from getting completely immersed:
First, the authors use a curiously detached, almost lazy, narrative style. This robs events of depth and meaning. An example from the first book: "Saito stopped and looked up. A fireball erupted on one of the landings above. He felt his throat tighten. He knew the floor. He sprinted back up." This is what I meant about comic books: it's purely two-dimensional, flat.
This turns out to be the moment when this guy's world cracks open. It reverberates through the whole rest of the series and sets up a major story arc. But it's described with all the verve and nuance of someone choosing what to order at a Starbucks. ("There were so many choices. He felt his throat tighten. He turned to the barista.")
Second, the books are littered with passages which sound like first drafts. From book 5: "The barrier that kept the slightly-adjusted atmosphere of the city was just thin plasma. It wasn’t meant to keep anything out; it only kept in the air that human beings were accustomed to. Still, transitioning through it was strange. It was hard to explain."
With a little time and care, that could be two sentences. Also, "It was hard to explain?" No. This is a "you had one job" moment for the authors. Either take it all the way out or try describing it instead and let the reader sort out what it means.
I've read things that both Joshua and David have written by themselves, and found those books to be much more polished. I can't help thinking that the series was written way too quickly. It's too bad. The premise for the series has tons of promise, and there are flashes of humor, action and depth. But as it is, it seems like it needs a competent editor, some ruthless revisions, or both.
You can't turn away. Where to start, okay science fiction, if that is your genre at least understand the science part. The dark side of the moon isn't dark it gets light just like the other side. Find more than one way to describe something, super heated high velocity bullets gets old after the first 20 or 30 times. If these books had an editor and proofreader both need to be fired, even in the preface to the add on story cannon isn't the same as canon. I can't begin to list the misspelled words, fractured sentences, misused terms which turned into nonsense. Just what is "meteor sized"?
All these books, multiple storylines and yet no world building and shallow characters. Add in pages of flashbacks and dream sequences which do nothing but take up space which could have been used to deepen the rest of the story. You quickly learn to simply skip most of some chapters to get back to the point.
So we have the reluctant hero, his father, a super spy, a bevy of revolving characters you try to keep up with, the super powered alien threat, the two warring factions of humanity just to complicate things and a few other tropes just because. No spoilers because I wouldn't know where to start.
I will give the writers credit for never calling a magazine for a weapon a clip, good on ya for that.
I gave this a three because I have read far worse and I think with a good editor and proofreader these books could have been a good read. So if what I listed above doesn't bother you this might be worth the time. If you want polished and well rounded you can find much better to spend time with.
Almost a very good book. The premise and storyline are excellent, but the descriptions lack depth. It almost feels like a first draft that should have either been filled out with more detail or chopped down by two thirds. Did it even get a proof read? There are some gapping holes in the science, as there are in so many SciFi books but they can be largely ignored. It’s the characters running around with crippling injuries as if nothing had happened that is most distracting. There is also some odd ballistics and ammo. Super heated bullets are superfluous. It is the sudden transfer of large amounts of kinetic energy that makes bullets damaging and dangerous. The only thing that would happen is that misses and through and through would start fires,(and you would be able to make petrol tanks explode like they do in the films). All those technological advances and still using basic bullets and guns? Despite all this, it is a good space opera. There are enough twists to keep it interesting and the basic premise is quite unusual. Some good original fiction let down by the lack of any the polish these authors have in their individual works.
Received as an ARC copy, this is an honest review. Whether you read them as the individual books or you waited until the series is finished; now is the time to jump in. Here is the full story of how a ragtag crew of soldiers, civilians and pirates banded together to save humanity from the murderous Oblivion cult and deadly aliens called the Shapeless. Ruthlessly pursued to the edges of AIC and UEF borders and beyond; Ben, Ada, Wan, Lee, LeFay, Tomas, etc fight tooth and nail to not survive but unravel the mystery to stop the plague eating the universe alive. Filled with humor and tears and epic action... this box set delivers an enthralling ride from beginning to its end. Highly recommended.
This author team is really cranking out some great stories! This series is filled with a variety of characters you’ll get to know very well as the story twists and turns through several sub-stories, running simultaneously, that all meet up in the finale. There are aliens seeking to destroy the Earth, there are good guys, bad guys and our heroes in the middle, being stalked by all. The story will keep you engrossed and enjoying the roller coaster ride. This series boxset is a fantastic bargain! I’ve read other books and series by these authors, both solo and team works – all of them are well worth your time and you will not be disappointed. Spend a buck for this set – you'll want to read all their books!!
Titan Martyrs is the 3 in the trilogy by Kate Rauner. It is a real treat of a trilogy. I loved all the detail she took with the environmental dealings and the technology she used that we would know about like the 3 D printer use. The extreme cold, the 2 political thinking systems of people that divided the people, the great character development all wonderfully written. Sometime while reading I thought myself actually in the book it was delightful. I loved her Mars series and this one is also a great 4 star book too. I highly recommend it.
Death💀🔫🗡🔥 and Destruction in Space🚀👽💫 Adult oriented military sci-fi.
I got this e-book series From Amazon📚 with Kindle unlimited.
The books began to drag towards the middle of the series And it took Many hours to finish this Series of novels with many Confusing side Stories and Flashbacks. How many times can your ship get wrecked and rebuilt? How many times can humans be shot up and resurrected By Medical science.
The end of human species is was at hand. The aliens had arrived.
Everything kept changing fast as the aliens took over all the planets one at a time. A group of humans kept learning things about the aliens and how to fight them. It was fight or die while moving g from p!Andy to p!anet.
Almost an end of the world saga but heroic people save the day. Good story and entertaining but it is was it says, pulp space action fiction but worth a read if that's what you like. Characters are solid people with varied backgrounds but populate the story and carry the plot forward. Quite lengthy but worth the read.
I really enjoyed this series, so much action and so many twists and turns, and the boxed set makes it so easy to binge! no waiting for the resolution of the cliff hanger endings of the individual books but so hard to put down.
This is a real page Turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end .I highly recommend this series to anyone that loves a great space opera.
Great series! LaFey was my favorite character. Would have loved to read more series including her and the gang. Overall, a terrific read and time spent well! Thank you. Moving on to more James and Young books
Enjoyed the story the subtle way it developed I would recommend this story to any one who enjoys SC to I do appreciate the entire story and the way it was all connected
This was a pretty good series. It was intense most of the way through it and got really intense at the end. The concept just seemed too far out of the realm of possibility for me.
Joshua James and Daniel Young have created a compelling Sci-fi universe with different human factions warring against each other, until aliens arrive seeking the annihilation of all mankind. Full of action and heroes!
A bit choppy in plot and a few stretches to integrate the players and story but a decent little space opera. I'm looking forward to the rest of the tale. Thanks for sharing this to the authors!
This is one of the best sets you can buy. Thrills galore and much much more. This set will give you a lot of enjoyment and reading the books in order is just great.
Fast-paced and a great sci-fi space odyssey. Could use some editing, but not near as bad as some out there. This author deserves your attention. He’s that good.
Despite the weird sentences a d dropped words it was still a fun read. It wasn’t technically perfect as others have mentioned but very enjoyable characters!
