Loved Mateo and Bryan's story!! Two guys with so much in common but also vastly different, their story starts off with chaos and ends in hope.

Bryan has only been out of juvi for about a year and is trying his best to do the best he can to make a good life for himself but that is hard when you have hardly any money coming in. His friend introduces him to an app where he can meet "Sugar Daddies" that will keep him fed, clothed and happy if he gives them something in return. Bryan never has good luck, and this time is no different when he gets tangled up with a man who wants far more than Bryan is ready to give. When Bryan gets pushed around by Stephen and Mateo shows up to stop him it seems that Bryan's luck keeps getting worse. Mateo not only assaulted a man to keep him safe but the man in question is a lawyer and is about to make both of their lives more difficult.

Mateo has always been fiercely protective of the ones he loves which hasn't worked out too well for him in the past. Having had a rough life like all the guys at Get Ink'd he is grateful that he was giving the opportunity to turn his life around. When he hits a lawyer to protect the newest member of Get Ink'd Mateo knows things around about to get a lot more complicated. Bryan is gorgeous with his fiery red hair, but Mateo knows he needs to control his feelings and him this kid learn to protect himself. Not only is Mateo working with Bryan, teaching him how to protect himself and is his new art teacher he also offers for Bryan to live with him while everything with the lawyer is heating up. Mateo can't get Bryan out of his mind and heart especially when their lives are constantly intertwined.

As Mateo and Bryan's relationship changes, they both realize that they can give one another something that they have never had, love. Life always seems to get in the way and cause problems but these two know that if they want what they have going to last, they need to start letting go of their past issues and move on to what could become something real.

One of my favorite things about Hard Ink was that while they did fight and have their issues neither Mateo nor Bryan walked away because things go too hard. They both took time to figure things about but ultimately, they worked out it together and that was refreshing to see. As with most of the other books in this series I adored it and am excited for Bryce's story.

“I want you living with me as my boyfriend, my partner, my lover, and my forever.”

Kind of like this a little more. I mean; who doesn’t love a damaged hero?

I agree with Larissa’s review.

The first half was great, but the second part didn’t do it for me. It felt like one of the mc’s didn’t even matter anymore. It was all about Matteo and his mom. And he behaved really out of character. Like not showing up for work on time for a meeting? For someone who did everything to make his trauma fueled boyfriend happy it’s weird to not even text. And leave for a lot of days without even updating his so called love of his live, because he lashed out in anger? I didn’t feel the love he had for his partner anymore. So it ruined the book for me. I honestly wanted B to fight back a little after that. Not be the only one too apologize. What I hated most about this part that if felt rushed and it didn’t really get the attention it deserved. The stalker and the trauma got swept under the rug for another drama that one mc got completely left out in and ignored by his lover for a whole week. And then he’s the one to apologize? That doesn’t add up with the rest of the book.

I don’t have the best history with older men. When Mateo saw my last relationship implode, he was there to help. He saved me. Hopefully self-defense lessons will keep me from getting hit again. I can’t ask for more of my friend. Even dreaming of keeping him is wrong. But when my ex makes things difficult, Mateo steps up again. I don’t want a protector, but maybe it’s time to accept a little help. For the first time in my life, I want something real. What will it cost to keep the man I’m falling for?
The "Get Inked" series is centered around the tattoo shop, "Get Ink’d", and the men who work there. They all have "iffy" pasts, but have they've grown together into a strong and loving family. Most of them have spent time in juvenile detention, but Reagan, the very talented artist and owner the shop, is a true believer in giving everyone a second chance since he has survived his own struggles as a younger man. He takes the chance and provides them each a safe place to come to, a job, and a loving, supportive family-type environment, Reagan is credited, though he takes no public recognition, for saving the very lives of the majority of the men that work there.

This, the fourth book in the series, is the story of two more of the Get Inked crew...Mateo and Bryan. We met Bryan in the last book while he was yet in juvie...Bryan is 19 and is now out and determined to turn his life around with Reagan's help and encouragement He's been hired to work the front desk at the shop and hopes to start an internship to become a tattoo artist once he has finished school. He knows that he had been searching for security in some very dangerous places before Reagan found him and brought him into the shop.

If you have read the series in order, you will remember meeting Mateo in, I believe Book #1. Now he's almost 30, and one of the talented artists at Reagan's shop and he's also a part time art professor at the local college. He has some very serious doubts about being in a relationship with someone so much younger, but he feels connected to Bryan and finds that he can’t stop himself. Both men have been badly hurt in the past, and they both have serious issues with their mothers. They were both betrayed by the people who were supposed to love and protect them. At first, Mateo takes the role of the protector in their relationship, but when his mom comes storming back into his life, Bryan is simply "there for him" offering both comfort and protection, the same way Mateo supported him when he was involved in a scary stalker situation.

Bryan has to overcome his issues with trust...and take a chance to believe in Mateo and in their relationship. Mateo needs to understand that while Bryan is younger, he’s old enough and has "lived" enough to make his own choices about who he wants to give his heart to...who he wants to love. It was a good experience watching both of these men push their boundaries and honestly try to grow into better people, while knowing that their relationship will only be stronger for it.

This is book #4, and I have to say that this series, thus far, has been an enjoyable, engaging reading experience. It flows along nicely with interesting side characters, and only a minimal amount of angst. Each book has concluded with a "sneak peek" at who the next one of the crew is to find their life mate and "happy place".

Let me preface this by saying that Get Ink’d is a terrific series so if you haven’t read it, grab Book 1 and start reading. You can read this book as a standalone, but the events are sequential and having met the other characters and their relationships will enhance your enjoyment. And unfortunately, this book can use that help.

This book focuses on Mateo and Bryan. 19-year-old virgin Bryan is being stalked by a former “daddy” he met on an app who now believes Bryan owes him and intends to collect. Mateo, who’s almost 10 years older, steps in as Bryan's protector. The attraction between them is undeniable and when they get together, it’s definitely hot. We’ve seen the age gap done well in a prior book in this series - Old Ink - with Regan and Channing, but something about it just doesn’t work here. I’m not sure how or where it went wrong because there was a ton of potential in the storyline, but then it just fizzled out. The story took a turn in an unexpected direction which, frankly, just wasn’t as engaging primarily because it focused on Mateo and his relationship with his mother and essentially excluded Bryan from that storyline. The build up in the stalker story was squandered and the resolution of it was anticlimactic.

There were also a number of things in this story that just didn’t make sense. For example, Mateo, who is very responsible and never late for work, goes to a meeting about potentially moving to LA to open a second Get Ink’d location, but doesn’t tell anyone at the studio where he is - including Bryan and even his boss Reagan. He then strolls in late for filming, a client anxiously waiting in the chair for him, without any explanation or care in the world. Then he has the audacity to get angry at Bryan for being upset and worried due to Mateo’s unexplained disappearance. It’s a disconcerting disconnect from what we know of Mateo’s character. Another example: Mateo takes off to deal with his mother and everyone else seems to know what’s happening and why - except Bryan. Then 8 days go by and they don’t speak. At all. They’re deeply involved with each other at this point, so it’s just not believable that radio silence would actually happen. The result is that it feels like a rushed plot device to create tension and angst, instead of developing it naturally.

The issues I have with the plot happen in the second half of the book which makes me wonder if the author just ran out of steam. There’s nothing more disappointing in a book than squandered potential and the premise and early parts of the book were so good that the fall off in the second half diminished the enjoyment of the book.

The last chapter of the book sets up the next one in the series which again, has a lot of promise. I’m eager to read it but hope that the author capitalizes on the potential in that one and creates a more balanced, believable story.

This is the first I’ve read in this series and now I have to go get the rest. This story held my attention all the way. Two damaged souls who after some internal doubts find each other. The author did a great job of bringing these characters to life. The descriptions, the backgrounds, their actions all made it so I can picture them as surely as I can see my friends. The reality of their lives is so possible that if made me sad for the people who actually live these lives. I think the author did a great job with the secondary characters. There just seems to me to be a talent in being able to describe characters as in this story. The grandfather, the mom, the co workers all add to it and made it so I can’t wait for the next story. I received a free copy from Gay Romance Review and I’m so glad they introduced me to this series.

I struggled with this one. Bryan annoyed the crap out of me. He was so immature and showed all of his 19 years of age. Then you have Mateo who I really liked until the end of the book. Then he acted like a teenager even though he's 27.

Ugh...This series hasn't been great for me. I hate that I feel like I have to push through, because one of these books are going to knock my socks off, right?!?!?

This is the textbook unhealthy relationship. Take an abused child. Then mentally abuse them more. I hate mind games. How can you think ooh, how sweet, yay for this HEA. You have a person who has major family hx. Doesn't see his mum for years.. I mean serious issues. ,and for good reason is happy not having her in his life. Then gets into a relationship. He talks a big game, how protective he is. What he survived. Then boom. Suddenly his mum. Is his priority. His world. No conversation, just everything. No consideration for the boyfriend, his welfare, living arrangements, like the whole 70% of book out the window in 30 pages. And everyone else knows about it of course. Ant the series is all. They are found family. But his boyfriend. His world. Just dropped cold. No texts, calls, nothing, 8 days. But again everyone knows. But no conversation ? N then. They tell him. N its his fault ( the out of the loop boyfriend) yup. Mind blown. Everyoneknows about mum, n other stuff. But its time boyfriend who has been iced for 8 days to make it up? WTF! . Worse victim blaming I've not read in a long time. If I could zero stars this book I would.

This is exactly the type of book that normalises mental manipulation.

So happy to have Mateo and Bryan's story! This one covers coworkers, teacher/student, friends to lovers, age gap, hurt/comfort.
Both men had hard childhoods and ended up needing help to get their lives on the straight and narrow. They had to fight hard for themselves and so trust is hard to come by, especially for Bryan with him being younger. From the start, there is an attraction simmering between the two but each man is reluctant for his own reasons. It takes chance, gentle (read obvious) nudges from co-workers and belief in each other for the relationship they both deserve to develop.
I enjoyed the plot of the book with several aspects occurring to keep the reader interested through the story, tugging on your heartstrings with seems to be Ali's modus operandi with this series. I did get a little frustrated towards the end with how something gets blown out of proportion but that adds another element of drama and growth for our MC's, so a little worth it.
Another recommended read for this series and I'm looking forward to the next which we catch a glimpse of at the end of Hard Ink.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Hard Ink is the fourth book in the Get Ink’d series by author Ali Lyda. For me, this book was the best in the series so far. The emotional connection that Bryan and Mateo have is amazingly well done. Kept me reading and wanting more. This story is written in dual POV. I liked that allowed me to get into the mindset of both men.

Bryan his job means everything to him. He is busting his butt to do a good job and prove himself. He goes to college and is very poor. He went on a sugar daddy sight to help him get by. But one of his sugar daddies is refusing to let go even though Bryan wants out of the game.

Mateo is older than Bryan. Is he is a good person. Brave, strong, and has a huge heart. He teaches at the college that Bryan goes to.

I liked both men each have something the other needs. And each are unexpectedly stronger than they know. I loved them they come off as great friends and even better lovers. When you want an unforgettable romance with some edge to it, I highly suggest this one.

Though part of a series, this story can be read as a stand-alone and understood just fine.

I enjoyed this so much. I had not read anything by the authors before and I had not heard the narrator. So I went in blind, and it was right up my alley. A big inked protector who is trying not to notice how sweet and sexy his co-worker and now student is. Brian is a 19 year old just trying to figure out his life and get it back on the track he wants after an unfortunate upbringing. Matteo seems to have his life all together, but he too had a rough childhood. Now with Brian being stalked, they come together to help Brian learn self defense and decide further protection is needed to help keep Brian’s grandfather safe so Brian lives in with Matteo!! Their relationship develops naturally, as they were both trying hard not to be together. Once they are together it is sweet and lovely. They do have a misunderstanding but Brian seriously made up for it. And there is a scare with Brian possibly being hurt. And in the end Matteo gets a wonderful HEA with his family and Brian.

Although not my favourite in the Get Ink'd series, this is another great read from the series. We meet both Mateo and Bryan in the previous books, and it's obvious they both have painful pasts. I think the characters were explored well and we get great insight into their personalities and their pasts. And oh boy, did they break my heart at times. At the start, it was Bryan who was tearing at my heart, whilst Mateo had me swooning hard at his protectiveness and jealousy. But when their relationship finally got on track, Mateo was hit with one of the hardest things you could ever have to go through, and my heart just broke for him. Luckily, Bryan and Mateo don't let each other get away and they fight for their HEA. It's so well-deserved and extremely satisfying and put my heart back together again. I am so not ready for this series to be over, and I can't wait for the next one!

A continuation of the gorgeous, generous guys from Get Ink'd. Mateo and Bryan are wonderful together, both learning they can lean on the other without being considered weak. There are laughs, tears, misunderstandings and miscommunication and even a little stalking. It all comes to a HEA and I can't wait to read more.

I understood why Bryan did what he did. As a poor young man trying to come up with a way to make money is important, and he did, but at a cost. I felt really sorry for him trying to figure out who he was and what he wanted and having this stalker all up on him.

Mateo definitely is a good guy, even if he doesn't always think so about himself. I think that he has a huge and loving heart and he wants to make sure that everyone is taken care of, especially Bryan.

ETA (12/13/2020) 📚🎧 Audiobook Narrator Review 🎧📚

Narrator 🎙: Connor Brown
Rating: 5 Stars

Connor Brown does another great job with giving these characters a voice. This is the third book, in the series, he’s narrated. I read the book prior to listening to the audiobook, so I was able to focus more on his narration, and I felt like he did the story justice. His voice did not detract from the story; it enhanced it. He captured their emotions and personalities well. I’d gladly listen to his work again.

〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️

Four books into a great series, and I think I have a new favorite.

Bryan has been through some rough spots in his life, including juvie. Things aren’t all sunshine and roses when he gets out, but he found an ally in Reagan, and a job at Get Ink’d. One requirement of the help he was getting to better himself, was to go to college as well. Things begin to look up for him, but he knew his luck was bound to change. Nothing good lasts long. On top of that, he has a crush on someone who probably wouldn’t even bother with him.

Mateo was older, wiser, and has been around the block a few times. Yet, he finds himself drawn to this adorable, young redhead at work. After coming to his rescue, he finds himself wanting to help him. Since he felt like they could never happen, he had to at least teach him how to defend himself. The more time they spent together, the deeper they both fell, until it was inevitable. They were a forgone conclusion. With Bryan’s stalker still out there, and not taking no for an answer, the stakes become higher.

This is a well written story. It was great seeing old faces again, as we get to know Bryan and Mateo better. I liked the dynamics of their relationship. They were sweet, and supportive of each other. The crisis kept me on my toes, and I found myself as nervous as Bryan was at various times throughout the book. This was more than just a romance; it is a story of personal growth for Bryan and Mateo. They both had demons to put to rest. It was touching watching them both be there for each other. Watching Bryan discover his worth, and that he had the strength all along, was incredible.

While this story can technically stand on it’s own, I recommend reading/listening to them in order. It’s a good series, and you won’t regret it.

Bryan Hannon was at a restaurant celebrating Channing’s graduation when Steven came in and made it plain he wanted Bryan to step outside with him. Bryan had been avoiding him and he was having none of that right now. Steven smirked at Mateo Reid who had been sitting next to Bryan as Bryan got up and walked outside. Steven painfully grabbed his wrist and dragged him to an alley. He made it plain what he wanted, implying Bryan had agreed when he hadn’t. Then he smacked Bryan across the face, calling him a tease. When Bryan said that is not what he wanted, Steven smacked him even harder, his ring cutting Bryan under his eye. Then suddenly Mateo was there, pulling Steven away, knocking him down with a punch, and ready to do more until Bryan begged him to stop. Steven stood up and smiled an ugly smile, bragging he was a lawyer and would sue him for his last dime. While Steven shouted at the cop, Mateo stayed cool and courteous, even shaking hands with the cop when the questioning was done. Then warnings were issued to both of them and they walked away.

Mateo drove Bryan to his grandfather’s house on his motorcycle. He asked what kind of trouble Bryan was in, and he told him he was on an app to find “sugar daddies” because he needed the money. Mateo told him that he had to learn to protect himself. Mateo taught Brazilian Ju Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing at a fighting gym. If Bryan intended to be involved with these older, powerful men, he wanted him trained to defend himself.

Bryan came to work at Get Ink’d all sore and stiff. The guys laughed at his expense, but it was more like brotherly teasing. Soon they would be filming there in the shop and the guys would all get an extra paycheck. He was looking forward to it. Reagan, his boss, also said he had to go to school and his recommendation letter got him into community college. He found a studio art class listed and Mateo was the instructor! So he signed up.

As the two of them worked more together in training, classes, and as coworkers at the tattoo parlor, it was difficult to just stay friends. A relationship was out of the question. So Mateo would keep him safe. And then Steven walked into the tattoo parlor, smug and arrogant. He announced he was suing Mateo and would take every last penny from him. He made it plain that he was doing this because Bryan had ghosted him and not given him what he wanted, so someone else – Mateo – would pay. When Mateo moved toward him, Reagan stopped him and order the smarmy lawyer to leave his shop immediately. And when Bryan left in embarrassment, Steven got in a sucker punch – but only one and Bryan’s defensive training took over and he protected himself. Someone even got a video of what happened. But Mateo knew Steven would never quit going after him. So he asked Bryan to move in with him. There was so much he wanted to say, but he wouldn’t. He just needed his own peace of mind knowing Bryan was safe with him. They would figure it out from there. Could he keep Bryan safe? Was there any way to stop Steven and end this? And with both Mateo and Bryan falling hard for each other, who would give in and admit to it first? Mateo has given him the best gift of all in empowering Bryan to have confidence in himself. He believes in him, and that will give Bryan the strength to become what he needs to be.

This was yet another excellent story from this author. Reagan was an amazing boss who would do anything for those he considered his family. And his workers were definitely family in their protectiveness of each other. This story will melt your heart. Grab your copy and see what happens with Steven’s relentless attacks. And what happens when Mateo and Bryan realize what each of them truly wants in their lives.

Audiobook version.

Ok so, I'm a pretty good audience and I really liked this book, until now. I'm almost at 90% and I still have about 45 minutes to listen to but I have a big problem with the last drama...

Big SPOILER alert, don't read further.

As much as I can relate and be compassionate with Matteo learning about his mother and wanting to care for her, I totally disagree with how he treated Bryan.
I am the mother of a premature child and I remember perfectly the first few weeks when I got home from the hospital and my husband was at work and I was alone and exhausted all the time. We joked on the phone with a friend I how was having a hard time to find the time to shower : I can assure you I totally get exhaustion. But I still think that, if he missed Bryan so much and thought of him so many times, he could have thought of rake 5 seconds to send a text saying : "I am at my mother's, she has cancer and needs me. I'm not going to LA, don't worry. I will come back."
I think he is very lucky to have such a gentle boyfriend because, in his place, though I could have forgive him for that night and even maybe the whole time after that, I don't think I would have make any grand gesture before he explain anything to me himself. Bryan didn't behave like a child because being insecure and worried when his partner keeps him in the dark, it isn't immature. But keeping your lover and partner in the dark about such big things is. Matteo didn't trust him when Bryan had proven himself time and time again to be a solid partner for him... Ok he did apologize but only after Bryan did everything and it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
They looked so good together before that but I think it tainted their couple for me... I hate to DNF but I almost want to.

I just finished it and I confirmed my review. Matteo behavior was totally out of character (not telling his boyfriend, his boss or even his client that he has a last minute appointment and is running late then not telling his boyfriend that his mom is back into his life, has cancer and he's taking care of her) and the resolution of this crisis he created being resolved with Bryan doing the grand gesture before having any explanation from Matteo was wrong. And it totally spoiled their relationship. And the tattoo Bryan got at the end ? Oh my god that was horribly ironic ! How Matteo can't realize he didn't trust Bryan ?! How Bryan can't see he didn't react badly because he didn't trust Matteo but because Matteo didn't trust him !? It was just so sad... It almost made me take out another star.

OUTSTANDING READ!!! OMG IT IS SOOOOO GOOD 10/10 I WISH I COULD GIVE IT MORE STARS
Mateo wanted to check to see if Bryan was ok, he had saw him leave the celebration. He follows voices to the back and he sees a man getting into Bryans face and then he slaps him. Nah that isn't happening. Mateo gets over there and stops the man but it ends up him him hitting him. Mateo's only thoughts was to save Bryan. This man is vile and he shouts that he has hit the wrong man before walking away!!!
Bryan had made a massive error. When he got out of jail he needed to make some money to help support his granddad and himself. He had been luck that Reagan had seen something in him and offered him a job at his tattoo shop but he just needed extra. Bryan had gone on a web site to find a sugar daddy. And that is where he found Steven. Steven had started to get too much so he had put some distant between them but tonight Steven had found him and he didnt want any of the guys to find out what he had done so he left to talk to him. He had expected Steven to hit him though. And he didnt expect Mateo to follow him. And now he knew that Steven who was some hot shot lawyer was going to make Mateo's life hell and it was all Bryans thought!
Mateo doesn't blame Bryan and quickly gets him to take some self defence classes with him so if Steven comes after him again Bryan will be ready for him. The more time they spend together the harder it is to stop their feelings for each other.
This is one hot read. It has everything. suspense, danger passion love understanding patients to name a few. But there are other things happening in this book Mateo and Bryan have to over come all there issues and their pasts. Can they work together as a team or does it break them apart?? There is just so much going on in this story that i just couldnt put it down. Once I started everything else was put on hold. It was a brilliant read and i can not wait for the next book. I think that one is going to be explosive!!!

Turning his life around (an audio review)

This series started a little rough for me but I’ve settled into the later books with enthusiasm, snapping them up as they’re released on audio. In Old Ink, Regan brought Bryan into the ink shop after Brian had served time in juvie. Bryan was jaded, to be sure, but wanting to start fresh. Regan and his shop offered him that chance.

That book ended where this one picks up – with Bryan being attacked. There’s a predator who is going after young men looking for sugar daddies – something we all wish wasn’t necessary, but sometimes young people need money fast and there are always older adults ready to exploit that need. Bryan has got himself entangled with one of these predators and can’t seem to extricate himself. Mateo comes to the rescue and Bryan is humiliated that he needs help at all.

Mateo understands second chances. He also served time in juvie and although he’s only twenty-seven, he’s already got a solid reputation in the ink community as well as teaching art at a community college. Bryan signs up for Mateo’s class which makes things really interesting – because the professor is very attracted to the student.

Now, at one point the plot hinges on Bryan moving in with Mateo for protection. I wasn’t convinced Bryan leaving his grandfather alone was safe, but sometimes plot devices don’t have to make sense. Bryan moves into Mateo’s home as his stalker continues his pursuit.

Then Mateo’s mother reappears after years of neglecting her son. As a drug addict, she was a terrible mother and now there might be a chance for reconciliation – but Mateo will have to let go of all the old hurts. Balancing that fragile relationship and a young lover proves too much. So the question was – would the two men be able to right their relationship or will Bryan’s immaturity prove to be too much?

The narrator for most of the books in this series is Connor Brown and I have to say he’s great. His voice suits the characters and his narration is unobtrusive as he tells the story. A story I enjoyed.

*10/26 Edit*
Still thinking about this the next morning and taking away one star. To me it was unacceptable

10/25 original
It felt like this book was written as an antithesis to all the daddy/boy more traditional age gap books out there. I enjoy equal relationship romances, but for me - this book took it pretty far. Starting out it was almost overload of the protector and one needing protecting stereotype, but by the end I wasn't convinced the MCs even needed each other anymore.
The book had been clear that once the Bryan had matured, yes- they loved each other very much, but didn't need to be around each other all the time. They were there for each other, but in-between other things that needed their attention. I know the point was how strong each of them were, but honestly my husband and I let each other know how much we need each other more than this couple in a romance novel did by the end. Which made me really sad, because they had felt like they really relied on each other about 2/3s of the way through.
I'm still giving this book four stars because the writing was enjoyable as were all the characters. It's on me that I didn't appreciate the independence of the MCs.

This addition to the Get Ink'd series wasn't a home run for me, but it came pretty close. I've read the other books in this series, so I already knew a lot about both Bryan and Mateo. I'm tempted to say this book shouldn't be read as a standalone, but I think if you can get over the abrupt-feeling start you'll be able to catch up on what's going on pretty quickly. For the most part, I loved the age-gap dynamic in this book. Sometimes I feel a little weird about the uneven power dynamics in books like this, but Bryan and Mateo were so obviously on equal footing in this relationship. At times, Mateo stepped up to fill the protector role, but he ceded to Bryan and let himself be supported just as often. That being said, I really hated the childish temper tantrum these two engaged in towards the end of the book. Everything up until that point had led me to believe that they were communicating clearly and trusting each other completely, so to have their relationship be tested by something like that didn't sit right with me. I understand that Mateo had so much more to deal with than just his and Bryan's new relationship, but it felt ridiculous that over eight days went by without these two even touching base with each other. In a story where I saw Mateo and Bryan building each other up and exploring their love so deeply, it did annoy me to go through such a rollercoaster at the very end. Putting that conflict aside, I have no complaints about the rest of this story. Bryan and Mateo both know what it's like to be betrayed by the ones who are supposed to love you, so it was all the more satisfying to see them find a lasting, unconditional love with each other.

I enjoyed the first part of this book, but the ending ruined the entire thing for me.

I had major problems with the way Mateo just abandoned Brian. It was understandable that he'd want to make his mom his priority, but it was unforgivable to leave Brian just hanging on for over a week, not even knowing what was going on at all...or even whether he was moving to LA. It was very telling to me that everyone else knew not only that his mother was the reason Mateo was gone, not only that she had cancer, but also that she was about to have surgery. I find it highly insulting to Brian that there was not a five minute span that he could at the very LEAST could send a text. After having claimed that he needed Brian, it seems he would want his support during this crisis. Mateo KNEW the problems Brian had been having with the stalker, but evidently, it was too much to ask for him to consider this. Then, after BRIAN apologized, Mateo STILL didn't mention Brian to his mom, or even tell her he was gay. Mateo seemed neither surprised nor sorry Brian had moved out of his home while he was gone. He just felt things were as they should be. Further, Mateo put an offer in on a house without Brian having any kind of say in the home Mateo expected him to live in or, or even the knowledge he was making an offer at all. Things were still so uncertain in Brian's mind that he thought Mateo meant for HIM to live in the garage apt. that came with the house. In the end, I didn't feel happy the two stayed together. I felt sad that Brian settled for someone who clearly thought so little of him, no matter what claims were made on Mateo's part. Just more of the treatment Brian had suffered his entire life. VERY disappointing.

This is the 4th book in the Get Ink'd series and the first that I have read by this author. I really enjoyed the book. It is not necessary to have read the earlier books to understand what is happening in this book. The is the story of Mateo. He is a tattoo artist and teacher at community college. He is a large imposing figure with a kind and giving heart. And the story of Bryan. He is a co-worker of Mateo and a student at the community college. Both men have had some hard time and big disappointments by the people who were suppose to love and protect them. As Mateo is older, he wants to protect and help Bryan. He wants him to learn from Mateo's mistakes. Even though Mateo is attracted Bryan, he is working very hard to keep him in the friend zone. Bryan on the other hand, thinks every time that Mateo attempts to help him he is saying that Bryan is unable to help himself. Bryan's self worth and image have taken a beaten in his young life. He believes that bad things that happen to him are brought on by not being good enough.

This story follows the relationship of Mateo and Bryan. From coworkers, to friends and to more. There are a lot of misunderstandings and problems that arise but they soon learn that they are stronger together than apart. The story grabbed me from the beginning and I enjoyed the trip right to the end. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. You will not be disappointed.

I really enjoyed reading this delightful, slow-burn MM romance that has a bit of an age-gap between the two main characters. The well-pace plot is interesting with some intense moments &unexpected surprises. The characters are likable & are quite interesting with a variety of traits although some of them struggle with self-esteem insecurities & personal issues. In particular, I liked how the characters continued to develop throughout the storyline by striving to accomplish their individual goals & becoming a well-adjusted loving couple. There is good support from the secondary characters.
It is about: a well-educated tattoo artist (Mateo) notices a young man (Bryan) in a dangerous confrontational situation with a another man (Steve) & promptly step in to help the young man, naturally Mateo decides to take the young man under his wing & later connivance's him to participate in self-defense classes & as the attractions slowly begin to flare so does the dangerous intentions from a deranged man increase.
There is: a villainous stalker, a supportive grandfather, caring friends, a uncaring mother, some twists, suspense, intrigue, secrets, humor, danger, threats, obsession, protectiveness, strange attractions, verbal banter, confrontations, disagreements, complications, restraining orders, devastating memories, heartache, vulnerabilities, misunderstandings, emotional turmoil, advice, surprises, contentment, love, steamy scenes & a satisfying conclusion for this couple with an interesting ending that could be paving the way for the next book in this series.

Hard Ink is the story of two more of the employees at the Get Ink'd tattoo studio. In the fourth outing in this series Mateo, an artist, art teacher and martial arts instructor, gets together with Bryan, the tattoo studio's admin assistant.

There are a whole bunch of tropes that work for me in Hard Ink: found family, (smallish) age gap, hurt/comfort, student/teacher, etc. The chemistry between the MCs is perfect, as is their reticence to pursue each other given their relative positions as co-workers and student/teacher. The bottom line is, though, that these two vulnerable men still coming to terms with past hurts are perfect for each other.

I really like that there are solid distinct plot arcs for both Bryan and Mateo as well as the combined storyline around their growing relationship. The events in the storylines tug on the heartstrings - there's definitely angst here and I'm on board with the majority of it. I do have a slight issue with one section at the end which feels a tiny bit forced where one MC's behaviour doesn't quite fit for me. There are a handful of passages that feel a bit clunky, too...some dialogue that doesn't flow as well as it could. My final mini complaint is an open one to all authors, not just this one, I implore you to please call a tattoo machine a tattoo machine...they're not guns!

Overall, Hard Ink is a really good read. It's not my favourite Get Ink'd book, but is definitely recommended. 3.5*

Strong, protective men is always a favorite of mine, Mateo was definitely that. Bryan is young, vulnerable, struggling with a hard past, and Mateo is just what he needs. Having grown up with a terrible past himself, Mateo understands the challenges that Bryan is facing. A bad decision Bryan made has now found him in trouble, and this is what starts the friendship between Mateo and himself. The building of their friendship, and them both trying to pretend there's nothing more to it, was entertaining, especially since all their friends seemed to find it obvious. Once they decided to move from friendship to an actual relationship, we really notice the change in Bryan. He steps up and wants to be equal with Mateo, he wants to be a true partner. Their relationship allowed Mateo to finally show someone his vulnerable side, and to feel comforted and cared for. About 3/4, maybe a little more so, into the book certain events transpired that annoyed me. I was able to see fault on both sides, but I think I was a little more annoyed with Mateo's part because he was always the more mature, steady, wiser one out of the two. I feel that the Mateo we knew throughout the book wouldn't have ghosted for nine days, not when he was supposedly already in love, or falling, at that time, and definitely since Bryan could still have been in danger. That was my one real issue with the story, after that got worked out, the rest was great. It was a very happy ending for both.
