Joining Manifest could be the cure for Gavin’s fears.

If it doesn’t get him killed first.

The world inside Gavin Brady's head is a strange place. The pros? He can tell what an item is made from by touch or sight alone. He doesn't know how, only that it's damn useful.

The cons? His life is consumed by his fear of Mods, a fraction of humanity that mutate at puberty, becoming stronger, tougher, and more resilient, gaining advanced senses and accelerated healing.

They began to appear at the same time humanity moved from their open cities under the sky into the domes, protecting them from the harsh changes of Earth’s unstable environment. Many humans have since come to accept Mods as a part of life, but Gavin wishes for nothing more than to live in a world without them.

There are horrors in Gavin’s past, traumatic memories all but sealed away from a childhood he barely survived. All he knows for sure are two things:

A Mod was responsible.

No Mod can be trusted.

Given the chance to join Manifest, a mercenary agency promising him a change from his dead-end job and a possible cure for the fear keeping him bound to the past, Gavin would be a fool to turn it down.

The one part of his contract he can’t stand? It comes with a Mod partner. No exceptions.

But can he ever learn to work with Zach, whose animosity toward humans is the only thing stronger than Gavin’s fear? Or will this new partner be the final straw that sends Gavin back to the psych ward?

Sara Deray is a long time writer who can be found splitting her time between productive pursuits and staring out into space, meeting the characters for her next books. Raised by proud nerds, she gained a love of sci-fi before she knew what the term meant, and has been known to disappear inside a book for a time. She has a soft spot for clashing personalities thrown together to work things out and believes the stories that happen to us, either in life or in media, are a tale of people more than circumstance, a theme that has always run heavily in her books.

Number 367 left me literally breathless. I’m not a sci-fi person in general. But I picked this up and next I knew I was 100 pages in and on the edge of my seat.
In Number 367 we meet Gavin who has a special ability and because of this he’s invited to join an elite corp of special agents. Gavin is very closed off and struggles because he must learn to trust the very beings who terrify him. That’s the plot in 2 lines. And that’s not what kept me on the edge of my seat. Rather, it was Sara Deray’s storytelling and deep character development that pushed me to finish this over the course of 2 days.
I was so captivated by how true these characters felt. Their actions, their emotions, what they would say, was exactly what real people would say. We feel what Gavin feels, we experience the frustrations of him and everyone around him, and we go so deep into his mind that we see him as he sees himself which is very different from who he truly is.

No matter what genre you prefer to read, I highly recommend Number 367. It’s fast and it flows and will leave you trying to catch your breath asking yourself “what did I just read and how do I return to my everyday life?”

A dystopian adventure under the dome.

The story is set in a future where humans now live under artificial domes developed to keep out the toxic environment that we created. Except humans are not alone. Living uneasily among them are the Mods, humans with natural adaptations which make them better suited to the harsh conditions of future planet Earth.

We follow the plot from the angst ridden perspective of Gavin, as he embarks on an adventure that in many ways is a journey of self discovery set against a grim, dangerous backdrop of life in a dystopian future.

I enjoyed the gritty writing style that brought the story to life, though I found some of the internal monologues were a bit too long for my taste. Nonetheless readers who enjoy a well-written dystopian tale should like this book a lot.

It’s hard to put life back together when you’ve been betrayed by those you trusted ... but that’s eventually gavin’s choice

Trauma has so shut Gavin’s mind that even when confronted by its cause, he cannot face it. Friendship, loyalty - more than the fact of being able to absorb another’s memory - are what’s needed to unlock the information so badly needed to stop spiralling destruction. Sara deray’s dystopian world is full of human emotions and machinations. There are groups that hate each other and others who are attempting to understand and heal the hate, and yet others who are goaded by power. Deray’s writing is clear and easy to follow, her dialogue believable. This is a great read for those who care to peep into a future we’d all rather avoid.

This book! I'm usually a hard sell for sci-fi, but my god, this thing pulled me in despite my best efforts. I started a chapter thinking "yeah, guess I'll see what the deal is" and arose a few hours later having completely finished the book and THIRSTING for a sequel (no, seriously WHERE IS IT?!?!)
It's incredibly compelling, the author lets the characters be imperfect and yet they are each so loveable in their own way. 10/10 would recommend, whether sci-fi is your thing or not. The world building, the characters, the relationships the characters build with each other... It's just so rewarding and satisfying!

I loved it! Deray pulls you into her world with her compellingly dramatic writing. Things that should seem familiar, feel exciting and new! Highly recommended for anyone who loves the genre or anyone looking to newly check it out.

Works on so many levels

In my opinion - as my heading states, this is a novel that works on so many different levels!
First: this is definitely a novel set in the (near) future that is dystopic in both medical and environmental issues.
Two: the protagonist has mental issues resulting from his childhood (with some other people).
Three: the authors ability to create interesting characters and the situations they're thrown into against their better judgement.

This is not a novel where everything works out perfectly in the end - but has a satisfying conclusion and sets up a world where you want to continue investigating.

I liked it. Thought it was an interesting start to a series- the worldbuilding and characters. Has a lot of potential. The hate to friends with Gavin and Zach was good. Though I sort of wish they had their heart of heart talk a bit sooner. Sadly, it's been 3 years since this book was published and while #2 had a teaser at the end of #1, there seems to be no sign of it being published. 😔 Only good news is this book seems more or less contained and didn't end on a cliffhanger. So it can be read as a standalone at this point. I hope #2 comes out soon though!

Great Story

I enjoyed every bit of the story.

It was wonderful and the characters for delightful and funny. It certainly had a lot of action and mystery which is what made the story go by so fast.

I would definitely recommend this story to anyone that is thinking about reading it.

I look forward to book number two.

Fun ride

Fun, albeit predictable, book. But can’t fault predictability when it’s a good working formula. I’d read more of her stories.
