Jingle Jangle: The Invention of Jeronicus Jangle:

Rate this book
A joyful middle grade novel based on the Netflix holiday film Jingle Jangle : A Chistmas Journey , starring Phylicia Rashad, Forrest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose, Keegan Michael Key, and newcomer Madalen Mills, about an eccentric toymaker, his adventurous granddaughter, and a magical invention, that if they can get it to work in time for the holidays, could change their lives forever.

A delightful middle grade story based on the Netflix holiday film Jingle A Christmas Journey ! A holiday tale set in the snow-covered town of Cobbleton, Jingle Jangle follows eccentric toymaker Jeronicus Jangle (Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker) whose fanciful inventions burst with whimsy and wonder. But when a betrayal by a former protégé (Keegan-Michael Key) leaves Jeronicus withdrawn and down on his luck, it's up to his bright and adventurous granddaughter, Journey (newcomer Madalen Mills) -- and a singularly magical invention -- to save the day. From the imagination of writer/director David E. Talbert and producer Lyn Sisson-Talbert, featuring original music by John Legend, Philip Lawrence, Davy Nathan, and Michael Diskint. Jingle Jangle reminds you that anything is possible...if you believe.

Listened to this quick, movie to book adaptation, and it was so cute and really fun, but if you have the chance, I'd recommend watching the movie because that does convey the atmosphere better and there are so many amazing visual elements.

Thank you to @Libro.FM for an ALC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I decided to read this and then watch the movie. This is such a fun story about Black joy and how success can strain family bonds. Jeronicus Jangle was poised to be the biggest toy maker ever until his apprentice stole all his plans and let him crumble into obscurity. Years later, Jeronicus has become estranged to his daughter, Jessica, turned his toy shop into a pawnbroker in order to make ends meet and has lost the magic that made him such a spectacular toy maker. Journey, his granddaughter, has that same magic and love of math that Jeronicus does, and she decides to find a way to his shop for Christmas.

This was so lovely and filled me with a lot of feels. Jeronicus is quite the crotchety old man in the beginning, but seeing Journey open his heart back up was so sweet. In a way the story kind of reminds me of the Nutcracker but with a robot rather than a toy nutcracker. The ending was so loving and the movie definitely made me tear up several times. I hope we can see more books and movies like this where it showcases and features Black creativity and excellence over Black trauma.

I definitely recommend both the book and the movie, but the movie is a musical so the added visual and music took it to another level for me.

These are the types of stories that I wish that I had as a child. Black inventors and toy makers who could change the world? What an incredible story and the representation. Can’t wait to watch the movie now!

The audiobook tie-in of Jingle Jangle is a companion to the joyous Netflix movie musical, telling the story of young Journey and her grandfather Jeronicus Jangle, two very different inventors with similar gifts of magic. Jeronicus Jangle's magnificent inventions have been stolen by his former protegé Gustafson and he is frustrated and depressed by his struggles to make a new holiday toy, Buddy 3000 work. His granddaughter Journey shows up at his door with a letter from her mother (about that...) and slowly wins over her grandfather, helping him recapture his belief in magic. What's the square root of possible? Why believing, of course.

This is a happy holiday audiobook that is perfect for a car trip with children! They'll be rooting for Journey and her new friend Edison to save the day.

Part of my enjoyment of listening to this story, in addition to Phylicia Rashad's wonderful narration, was listening while shoveling out of the big snow storm just before Christmas. I was transported into this fantastical story! Lots of fun for all the toy inventors among us.

2.5 stars. Cute holiday/Christmas book and rehires a Netflix show based on it! But it’s not for me. Listened to it while doing other tasks and couldn’t really follow it.

Meet The Characters
- Jeronicus Jangle, inventor & toymaker
- His daughter Jessica
- His granddaughter Journey

The Story 📖

This is the beautiful & magical story of Jeronicus Jangle; one of the greatest, maybe THE greatest inventors of his time, who went from having everything to nothing.

But with the help of his adventurous granddaughter Journey, a little magic and a lot of believing, he might have a chance to get things back in order.

My Thoughts 💭

Thank you so much to Libro.FM for this #ALC.

This is the perfect audio book to get you into the holiday spirit! It’s full of magic, energy and happiness! I loved how the story strikes a balance between being modern & old-fashioned at the same time!

The narration as well as the music is wonderful! It just makes you smile & want to get up and dance around the Christmas tree 🎄

With the main themes of hope, love & believing in oneself, it also reminded me a bit of The Greatest Showman, with a Christmas theme!
I am very much looking forward to watching the Netflix movie of Jingle Jangle in the next couple of days.

A few weeks ago, the movie Jingle Jangle came out on Netflix and there was so much buzz around it. The movie centers around eccentric toy maker and inventor extraordinaire, Jeronicus Jangle, and his little family, which includes his adorable granddaughter, Journey. The movie is stock full of big names that you will recognize and will love immediately. The book is adapted from the movie and is classified as middle grade. However, I absolutely adored it. The audiobook is narrated by Phylicia Rashad, whose voice is so soothing and reminds me so much of my childhood. The movie is a musical, so the audiobook lacks the music except for in the background and a song or two at the end. If you enjoy musicals, maybe you'll like the movie better. However, as a shock to no one, I thought the book was better. I tended to zone out myself during the musical numbers, but I think kids will absolutely adore the movie or the book. I found the book to be perfect for any age. It's a quick little listen full of magical realism perfect for the holiday season. Without allusion to religion, this story reminds us all that anything is possible if you only believe in yourself. I so wish this movie existed when I was young, but I am so glad it will be around for my children to see a young, Black, eccentric inventor at the center of a magical story that I think will become a staple of their childhoods.

What an enjoyable holiday story filled with wonder and joy!

The title is a bit unfortunate (for all of you Riverdale fans)...as this is NOT a story about teenage drug use but rather a joyful toyshop and it's creative inventor. This felt like a magical mix of Pinocchio and A Christmas Carol as we follow a toymaker named Jeronicus who lives in a magical version of London and runs a fantastical toyshop in the vein of Willy Wonka. The colors, the lights, the sounds all come alive in this tale.

Trouble comes when Jeronicus is betrayed by his apprentice, loses his shop and ends up in debt. Enter his adorable spunky and talented granddaughter, Journey. She is smart and determined and helps her grandpa design a toy that will put his store back on top.

It was also nice to have diversity in my Christmas reading and since I did the audio, I was blessed with the amazing momma bear voice of Phylicia Rashad! I can't wait to check out the movie on Netflix. This will easily become a holiday favorite.

What a super, super cute story! I’m so glad I downloaded this as an ALC from Libro FM. I knew the movie adaptation was available on Netflix, so I wanted to listen before I watched.

Spoiler Alert: Both the audiobook and movie are amazing.

This will definitely be a holiday movie I watch each year whether I’m with my niece and nephews or not. It’s an awesome story on family, love, and believing!

Audiobook: Phylicia Rashad is the narrator and her voice is so soothing. It’s an easy listen and is appropriate for all ages. If you’re road-tripping for the holidays, it’s a perfect group activity.

Movie: The film is more of a musical with all the hit songs from the soundtrack. While the audiobook set the scene, I felt the movie was even more magical with the animations. I’m also a visual person, so seeing it made my experience a tad better.

This quick and engaging book (or movie) was perfect for my holiday spirit.

Thank you Libro FM and Penguin Random House Audio for this ALC!

This was a wonderful audiobook based on the new Netflix Original Christmas movie Jingle Jangle: The Invention of Jeronicus Jangle about family, imagination, and the power of believing. This story follows the Jangle family years after the famous inventor Jeronicus has his inventions stolen and future destroyed. The granddaughter he never met suddenly shows up to stay with her grandfather before Christmas and Jeronicus slowly starts to unthaw after years of shutting himself away. What unfolds is a heartwarming story that’s perfect for the holidays.

I really enjoyed this audiobook! The narration was fabulous, the story was short & sweet, and the fact that this story has a predominantly black cast of characters is just the cherry on top. We desperately need more diverse representation in Holiday media and this story is exactly what I was looking for! This audiobook is perfect for the holiday season, especially if you have children. I wish it was a bit longer as the end went by pretty quick, but overall I loved this audiobook and highly recommend it!

Thank you to libro.fm for the ALC.

I was so happy to get a chance to listen to this book after having seen the movie during Christmas time. I highly recommend watching the movie either before or after you have read this book. This book follows the movie quite well but the movie adds something magical to the story. I really enjoyed the narrator of this book and how there are musical elements included at the end of each chapter. This is a great book for children of all ages and found that it is also something that adults would enjoy too.

This excellent children's book is full of imaginative characters and an enthralling sense of wonder. It is a chapter book with a short, easily accessible plot. And it has a wordlist of excellent words for vocabulary building with young readers. A Netflix movie version is also handy for non-readers to fake a book report with. This book now has one glowing review from a retired teacher of English and Reading.

Jingle Jangle: The Invention of Jeronicus Jangle (movie tie-in) written by David E Talbert, Lyn Sisson-Talbert, Narrated by Phylicia Rashad

This delightful & beautiful middle grade story is based on the Netflix movie Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey. My 3 daughters and I decided to listen to this audiobook before watching the movie last weekend. The book is truly a magical, wonderful adventure and our family absolutely LOVED it. Narrator Phylicia Rashad is a fantastic & talented narrator. She captivates her audience while bringing this magical story to life (she’s also the grandmother in the movie with a twist at the end!!). My 8-year-old said this is the best audiobook she’s ever heard and they were completely enchanted by the story. After the movie, one of my twins exclaimed “WOW THAT WAS REALLY GOOD! My favorite character is Journey, she’s so smart!” Isn’t it great to have strong BIPOC girl role models?

The eccentric toy inventor, Jeronicus loses everything including his imaginative toy shop when his apprentice steals his ideas and inventions. Over 30 years pass before his granddaughter who possesses his magical genes forces her way into his life.
A world of wishes & wonder…. And all you have to do is BELIEVE!

Thank you Librofm, Penguin Random Audio, Penguin Kidsfor this gifted ALC. My family was absorbed in this book every night for 4 nights before bedtime. They even cried one night because we had to stop!

Thanks to Libro.fm and Penguin Random House Audio for the ALC.

This was a charming book to listen to over the Christmas holiday. I loved the message of believing threaded throughout the story. The magic and inventions were so fun. I also appreciated how the story had some hard elements and complicated familial relationships that readers of many ages could understand and relate to. I'm sure this is an awesome movie, and I can't wait to watch.

This was a very well produced audiobook- complete with sound effects and it ends with a song. The narrator was also very talented.

It was just too middle grade for me. It would be good for kids. I should have just watched the movie.
