Keira Leichman spent the night of the wild snowstorm that struck Cassidy Heights injured and alone. But what really happened that night? Not even Keira can be sure. What she does know is that she's been having strange dreams since the accident, and she's stuck with a broken ankle and the possibility of never playing soccer again. That is, until she finds Jake's telescope, and is drawn across the bridge of ice to Shar.
Now Keira is marooned in the City of Silver Light with Daniel, Jake's younger brother, with no way to get home. But that is the least of their worries, for the secrets they discover in Shar are more dangerous than Kiera could ever have imagined.

As young Keira Leichman rested on the couch with her ankle in plaster, she thought with frustration of the accident that had caused her broken ankle – lost in a violent snowstorm that had hit their little community of Cassidy Heights, she still wasn’t sure what had happened. The fact that it looked like major surgery was the only answer, plus the possibility that she would never play soccer again was riddled with vivid dreams that seemed incredibly real. She had no idea what was going on…
When Keira discovered Jake’s telescope she was fascinated by it – knowing that she should return the telescope to him but feeling annoyed that he hadn’t told her about it was the beginning of life changing events for Keira. Then with a strange suddenness she found herself drawn through the darkness of the night into the woods; the bridge in front of her seemed ethereal; shimmering – as she moved toward it as if in a trance, she heard the voice of Daniel, Jake’s little brother behind her. He was calling at her to come back. But Keira kept going, unable to turn back; when she came to her senses she found to her shock and horror that she was on an icy ground, surrounded by three strangers with Daniel beside her. They were in Shar, the City of Silver Light – what would happen to them? Would they be able to go home again?
Trapped and scared, Keira was determined to get both of them out of Shar – the Sharians appeared to fear humans; but why? And as she discovered secrets that had been buried deeply for aeons, she knew their future looked tenuous. The dangers were intensifying. Could it be that their lives were in danger – two kids from earth? How had that happened? Would they ever see their families again?
I thoroughly enjoyed Across the Bridge of Ice, which is #2 in the Bridges trilogy - #1, The City of Silver Light definitely needs to be read first in my opinion – the growth of the characters, the reason for the events in book 2 are much more easily understood. Aussie author Ruth Fox has the right blend of mystery, fantasy and intrigue in these books, and I have no hesitation in highly recommending them. I look forward to the third and final when it is released (soon I hope)
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy to read and review.
A sincere thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for providing me with an ebook copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is not my usual genre, however I wanted to take the opportunity to read something from outside my norm. And I am glad I did!! Thank you for opening up my mind to something totally different. Characters were so well developed that I felt as though I knew them. I love when a book draws you into the story and it feels like you are living it with them.
The book starts with a visit to the doctor's office as Keira's ankle was injured during a wild snowstorm after which she had started to get strange dreams. Moving on, she finds a strange telescope in her best friend Jake's house leads her on an exciting journey to the city of Shar with Jake's younger brother Daniel.
This book was sent to me by Net Galley for a honest review.
This book is the second in a series but that didn't hinder the enjoyment. I thought that Keira was a little entitled and not altogether likeable at the start of this book but once the pace picked her character flowed easily and her personality shined better.
I really loved the storyline and I am tempted to pick up the rest of this series.
I like this book, the first part is quiet boring but the rest is better! I want to know what would happen in the next book, especially about Keira and Archorn!!!!!!
My review:
Across The Bridge of Ice adalah buku kedua dari series The City of Silver Light.
"And when people fear something as much as the Guardians fear Below World, they do things that might go against their beliefs. They might think they’re doing it for the right reasons; to protect others and keep themselves safe." "We all know what humans have done to their world. They’ve poisoned their air and waterways. They’ve stripped their land. They’ve exploited and neglected their own people. They have twisted and formed dirty devices out of the resources of their planet, which they have then used to do more damage."
Blue for Healers Red for Arbitrators of Justice Yellow for Overseers Purple for Etherologists or scientists Red is the highest rank; Arbitrators of Justice are the most highly-regarded of all Guardians. Purple is next, but if it’s edged with yellow, it means the wearer has been assigned as an Overseer of a particular guild. Green and Black are similar, but green has responsibilities as a Speaker, and can speak in the City’s Court. There are a thousand other distinctions. It’s strange how important colours are in this world.
My Thoughts:
How can a telescope be dangerous? What’s so special about it?’
Overall cukup bagus novelnya, aku mau tahu kelanjutan ceritanya.
Across the Bridge of Ice can be a standalone book. It isn't necessary to read the previous book, and it actually seems to coherently function without it. (I know this, because I'd not read the first book). It is a very short book (172 pages to be exact), and I find it a bit... Well, let's not blunder through this. More details...
First of all, I find the style to be interesting. It is a less than common style, and I do wish for some more editing of that version I'd just read (unless it is an ARC copy, which I will immediately forgive). There are some annoying things in it (such as word usage) that frustrated me, but it doesn't bother me too much. (Just some things like spelling and that sort of thing).
Across the Bridge of Ice is YA Fantasy. There are some Dystopian parts in the book, but I find it a bit more refreshing, because Keira is a visitor from Earth. (She is basically like the readers, a traveler to a whole new world). The darker sides of Shar (the City of Silver Light) is fascinating, and it intrigues me very much. The author, Ruth Fox, does not answer every question right away, but nevertheless, I find it an entertaining puzzle.
(So she manages to get away with it. Because she manages to have a nice balance between puzzling and annoyingly frustrating).
Keira is an okay character. Personally, I think she is a bit active (and could be a bit more active, of course), but she is most certainly different in the end. (So Keira's mother is correct). I don't have much of a problem with her...
Overall, I think Across the Bridge of Ice is great as a standalone (not sure how it would be like as a sequel), and there are some parts that could use a bit of work. (And world building does not need to be improved, but copyediting might be needed).
This is an interesting book. I have not read the first book in the series, but have read that this is a stand-alone book. However, I am not really sure of that. In this book, the main character, Keira Leichman is still trying to figure out what happened the night she was stuck I the snowstorm. Her ankle has not healed and she worries she will never play soccer again, plus she has had strange dreams. She is not sure, but thinks it has something to do with the telescope Jake keeps in her pocket. Searching for answers, she goes across the Bridge of Ice, and becomes stuck there. The book provides some very good descriptive details about the character, the plot and events and twists and turns encountered. However, for me it was just a bit too much a fantasy to appeal. I enjoyed reading about the adventures and concerns of Keira, but never did get immersed fully in the book. The book will appeal to those readers who enjoy reading well-developed fantasy, who enjoy following the adventures of this young sleuth who hopes to get answers to save Shar and the earth and resume her normal life. I enjoyed the book and it definitely took me out of my normal realm of genres, but I am still unsure just how to rate it. As I said, I do not normally read these genre, but this one did appeal to me somewhat and held my attention from the get-go. I think that fact shows the book’s unique appeal and interest, as well as how well written it is. I received this from NetGalley to read and provide an honest review.
First off, I did not know about the trilogy and was given the chance to read the second book, Across the Bridge of Ice first. It had a great story line and did not seem to be "missing" details or information. I do wish I had read the first book, The City of Silver Light, I was not lost and enjoyed Across the Bridge.
Kiera begins the book in Dr. Dracula's office. She has a broken leg that will not heal, because she won't stay off of it, and is looking toward surgery, surgery which could leave her able to walk but possibly never paying soccer again. She has been having strange dreams since the accident, the night she spent alone in a wild snowstorm. Kiera has been friends with Jake and his younger brother Daniel since they were young. They used to tell each other everything, but lately something has changed. Jake has an odd metal object in his pocket and Kiera finds herself wanting it badly. She needs it. She steals it.
Here the excitement really begins. Kiera and Daniel find themselves captive in a strange place with strange people in a world made of crystal.
I enjoyed Across the Bridge of Ice and can't wait to read The City of Silver Light so I can be ready to read the third book when it is released. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It is a quick, enjoyable, easy read!
I was given the opportunity to read Across the Bridge of Ice by Ruth Fox- by NetGalley.
I received an ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Across the Bridge of Ice is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone.
The main character Keira spends her days on the couch due to a broken ankle. Her biggest fear is never being able to play soccer again. Little does she know what she's about to encounter. Her best friend Jake is hiding a secret and she's determined to find out what it is. She ends up in another world called SHAR along with Jakes brother, Daniel. The two of them need to find a way to get back home to their world. Of course the two of them encounter some trouble along the way. Will they find a way to get back home or will they be stuck in SHAR forever?
I liked this book, but even though it can be read as a stand alone I feel like i should have read the first book before reading this one. I feel like I could know and understand the characters more.
Across the Bridge of Ice is book two in the Bridges Trilogy by Ruth Fox. I didn't realise before I started reading but it is fairly easy to catch up on the main plot from book one but I did think that I might have understood the characters better if I had read the first part.
it is quite a short book at 175 pages and continues the story of Keira who has been marooned in the City of Silver Light with Daniel. They are faced with secrets that threaten to change their existence and are forced to act with the fate of both worlds depending on them.
I think that it would be more suitable for younger teens as the story is a little predictable but the characters will strike a chord with a younger reader.
Supplied by Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
The second book in the Bridges trilogy, Ruth Fox's Across the Bridge of Ice stands as an interesting story of its own, or as a vital part of the larger arch.
Taken from the female point of view this time, Keira discovers her time alone in the ice and snow has left her with a mystery to solve. Not the least part of this mystery is how she feels about her life long friend Jake.
Her frustration in trying to work out the changes in her world grow as she is dragged into another. Somehow she is a link, there must be some way she can work with this.
Asked to review this book, I am hoping they ask me to do the next one too.
Across the Bridge of Ice is book two in the series but I had no trouble following the story even though I had not read the first book yet. It is an excellent fantasy novel for any age, an awesome premise of alternate worlds that exist side by side with ours.
A broken leg starts the adventure for our heroine. What happens next is an awesome story of discovering a world that exists side by side with ours. The people there are not so interested in meeting her as she is in meeting them, however.
Recommended for any science fiction or fantasy reader of any age. The author has created a world that is captivating, beautiful and dangerous all at the same time.
Here we have a second book of great world-building, as well as characters with enough depth to relate to them. We also see enough character quirks to delineate personalities.
Kiera is now in the City of Silver Lights, on SHAR. Strange things are happening. In fact, just being on Shar seems to be changing her. She has to get herself and Daniel back to their own world before too much change threatens the balance between Earth and Shar... and Earth is completely unaware.
This is a nice new series that has a strong female character for the younger teen reader. A fantasy that has the children visiting another world of ice that once was connected to the humans on earth. This is book two and I did not read the first in the Bridges trilogy. I think children and teens will enjoy this adventure series.
