I've been looking for some new Yuri titles to check out and this was available at my library so I decided to give it a try!

Adachi and Shimamura follows two teenage girls who frequently skip class. As they begin to get to know each other there is something beyond friendship that seems to develop between the two of them. This was definitely a slow start to the series. I found myself wanting it to move a little faster. Not necessarily in terms of the relationship but more so in the overall pacing. I found myself getting a little distracted while reading this which meant that I was completely engaged. That being said, I really enjoy Adachi as a character and I'm interested in seeing how she navigates her feelings for Shimamura in future volumes. I'll probably read the second volume and determine whether I want to continue the series or not.

This just felt...off. The whole volume feels like little snippets of at least 3 different volumes pasted into one; I had to stop reading at one point and double check that this was the first book and I wasn't missing something. The characters are vastly underdeveloped and have no personality outside of liking to skip classes. Also, I found it incredibly weird that part of the plot (which is already very skimpy) is that a teenage girl is jealous of a literal child (a 9/10 year old?) and is, in her mind, "competing" against the kid for her love interests attention.
Very meh all around so not a series I'm going to keep reading.

My 13 year old sibling, Piper, sent me this book in the mail. Overall, it was full of pre-teen angst and very, very gay.

This didn’t super impress me. It wasn’t bad, it was really quite bland. I’ve read maybe 5 wlw manga series set in school and they all had more character work in them so I think that’s why they grabbed me more. The girl pining for her best friend isn’t a new concept by any means, but there’s just not a ton of development here personality wise.

Adachi is a slacker - which isn’t really something I’ve read before. Usually, the characters are either very studious or they try and just aren’t that school smart. Adachi just doesn’t care to go to school. Shimamura is pretty and that’s kinda it. This volume doesn’t go that deep into their personalities.

The art is nice so I’ll give it at least one more volume before throwing in the towel.

The beginning was a bit boring tbh and kinda... awkward. Like, the pace was off. But it got better in the 2nd half.

Just like the art. What was rather messy at first, turned more clean at the end. Especially chapter 5.5 was quite the progress.

I’m pretty taken aback by how easy it is to skip class/school in Japan, apparently. Aren’t the teachers worried or will tell their parents? I mean, the way how chill Shimamura’s friends already reacted... as if school was just a hobby or something. 🤔

It’s nice how Adachi could accept her crush on Shimamura, but she does need to get a grip on herself... and Shimamura needs to be less oblivious. 😭
But I could relate to Adachi’s desire, wanting to be special to Shimamura, a lot, and her platonic jealousy. (Which for her turned into romantic jealousy.)

Overall cute tho, albeit a bit boring. It’s like the author isn’t sure how to spin a story around them, only knows they want these girls to be together.
But I’ll continue reading, mostly cause I like delinquent and introverted characters. And I want to know why Adachi is so anti-social.

Promising start to a series. Blossoming... something between two girls who struggle to fit in with the school vibe. Sweet and a little silly at times.

This was an interesting one to rate because I'm not just evaluating its merits as it story but where it stands in relation to other queer manga for teens. Overall, there were parts I found cheesy or clunky, but I do plan to keep reading the series!

This series is a manga adaptation of an original Japanese novel. A translation of the first chapter appears in the back of the volume, which is cool but ... oof. The narrative is almost entirely internal monologue with little to ground it, and when we do get actual tangible descriptions of the two girls' fateful first encounter ... we're talking about dust and mildew. Dreamy. They've got no chemistry in that version of the story.

So, the manga is already a welcome improvement on that, but the story's roots definitely show in some ways that hurt the narrative. I think the story picks up in the wrong place because we don't get to see much of A & S's rapport. It's a shame because they could both use some more development as characters. They're both pretty bland and opaque. Why do they skip class? Why doesn't Adachi have any friends?

That said, the story does do some things I appreciate! For one, I do like the art style. Adachi's arc of realizing she does indeed have a crush on Shimamura rang true for me, and so did the awkward gay flirting. The pacing of some of Adachi's "moves" did feel a little strange because she's weirdly bold before she's even realized she likes Shimamura, but whatever. Anime/manga tropes, I guess.

One thing that stuck out as weird and unnecessary is the little space alien girl. Like,,, why. I guess we'll see what that develops into, but right now it's adding nothing for me.

So far, this series really stands out for me among series like Sweet Blue Flowers and That Blue Sky Feeling just because the bar is so, so low. So far in Adachi and Shimamura, there are zero adult exes of teenage characters hovering around and no queer characters have had crushes on their cousins. And that's a very good thing.

I have been waiting a long time to finally read this.

I am currently volume 5 of the light novel series but I really wanted to read the manga.

So far it feels much like the novels, the author even stated that it was hard to do the manga because there was so many scenes that were not able to be included.

Adachi and Shimamura finds themselves skipping classes and meeting in the gym loft where they play ping pong. Eventually their tentative friendship grows beyond with that with Adachi visiting Shimamura at her house and meeting her sister. Adachi also finds herself maybe having romantic feelings toward her new friend after a dream of them kissing.

Adachi starts to want to become more special to Shimamura is not sure how to do that. Right now it seems like Shimamura sees Adachi like a little sister, which is how she acts on occasion whenever she is around the other girl.

Soon, Adachi shows more signs of her jealousy. Curious how that will look in the manga.

I really loved this first volume! It got right into the romance as it was suggested in the first few pages with actions. Adachi and Shimamura's connection is really cute and overall I just love the characters already.

(spoiler)
I would give this 5☆ but there was one thing that kinda confused me and that was when Adachi called Shimamura "Onee-chan" and she asked if she was Shimamura's little sister, I can understand the thought process as it's clear that Adachi just wants to be the most important person to Shimamura and probably sees Shimamura's little sister as a sort of competition but I still found it really odd.

Apart from that though I have no complaints, it's a wholesome story so far and it was a great read, I'm excited to buy volume 2.

This is good. I never got around to the LN series, now I'm going to have to.

Adachi and Shimamura. These two were made for each other. They just don't fully realize it yet. Adachi is starting to really grasp and identify how she feels about Shimamura, she just isn't sure what to do, and is scared to confess her feelings. Shimamura seems to still be in the "Naw, it couldn't be, could it?" Stage in relation to how things are progressing between the two. However, I suspect Shimamura herself is harboring hidden feelings for Adachi. I am very much excited to read the next volume. Such cute, pleasant girls. This looks to have the makings of a really fantastic series!

Incredibly fast and easy to read. There is a snippet of the light novel at the very end of the manga and you can tell that the light novel is better. The manga is random stories and snippets of life that don’t build character or flow well.

The story itself is really weird with characters we are told are friends but aren’t friends and that they have a crush on each other but not really. There’s really awkward interactions and a character who is an alien (?), it just doesn’t bode well.

No real stories stood out, nothing important happened. Black haired girl likes blonde and tries to do mildly couply stuff with her to make sure she feels the way she thinks she does.

Watching the mangaka get bored with their own plot and add in a random alien girl to compete in an attention triangle with the two main girls really felt like those tumblr posts where someone just adds "*a gnome runs by* Whoa did you see that?" in the middle of their sentence--

Truly, this was the definition of not trusting your audience to enjoy a slow burn, emotionally charged story and adding in an incredibly cheap gimmick just to jangle some keys in front of their face. Congratulations to them, because that ruined everything this manga had going for it!

Really loved this one. I came across this title when I was searching for yuri anime. Saw they had a manga and wanted to give it a go. I see it was originally just a light novel series and after reading this first volume of the manga I'm really interested in giving the light novels a go now also. I love the dynamic of the characters and this slow build through the first manga. Can't wait to get my hands on more of this story from all sources. :)

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. I am almost through my quest to find more LGBTQ+ manga for my library. This one was cute - two girls who skip class and hang out in the same spot grow close. The main character is kind of weirdly intense about her crush on the other girl, which turned me off, but I can also see middle school students absolutely relating to it. I’ll be adding this one to my library’s collection. Recommended for grades 7+.

I would have given this 3-3.5 as it had promise..... However I'm personally not a fan of an timetravelling alien girl bumping into the story almost out of nowhere. And yeah I did wikipedia it to be sure the kid was that and not just a poor lonely girl living in her own little world. But sadly it doesn't seem like that is the case. This story would have worked for me if it was either entirely sci-fi/fantasy or just slice of life without fantastical elements. For those reasons I'm out.

It’s raining outside, the power is off, and I’m surrounded by gay manga. Let’s gooooo!

This intro was very sweet, although I’m not sure where the story is going with the random alien plotline thrown in near the end? But otherwise, it really captures the insecurities and excitement of a new crush. Cute

Solid 3.5

I thought this was a cute concept and I think it really worked well. The one sided romantic relationship is interesting to see and I feel like in later volumes it will develope into mutal but even if it doesn't I think its nice to see WLW relationships especially in manga, just be causal pinning. Also the hint of internalized homophobia really makes it better.
