As Crown Princess, seventeen-year-old Caro knew she would be queen one day, but when her parents are assassinated, that role is suddenly thrust upon her. Unprepared, she struggles to adjust to her new responsibilities, but a plot is brewing in the shadows and a usurper stages a violent coup.
Betrayed by those closest and forced to flee for her life, she attempts to recruit an army to retake her throne, but loyalty is a rare commodity in such uncertain times. In the least likely of places she finds an ally — an enemy commander who wears a silver mask and whose motives are shrouded in mystery.
Who is he, and what connection does he have to the events which are unfolding? A hundred year old secret holds the clue, but to discover the truth may mean sacrificing everything she holds dear.
In order to restore peace to her shattered kingdom, Caro must confront the madman who stole her throne. But will she have the courage to face her parents' murderer?
A solid fantasy novel that follows a strong, yet at times vulnerable leading lady called Caro. After having her throne taken she is determined to get it back.
This story had a large cast of characters who each bought a unique flavour to the storyline and the author has shown how those actions or emotions then impacted Caro.
There was a little romance, though a slow-burn which is what I prefer.
DNF. Skimmed after first 20%. Too many perspectives, plot was frustrating to follow. I wanted to read all the way through, but it just didn't have an interesting enough flow.
The book was nicely written . It has a well rounded plot and interesting characters. Overall, it's a solid novel, appropriate and engaging for any young adult.
