The war is remembered in hushed whispers and dread. Humanity creating its own demons in the form of the weapons it forged. Though the conflict has long ended, these dangers remain. Hong Kong is now one giant bazaar selling anything your heart desires. Encrypted black ice, tame plagues and multi-phase rifles are now sold alongside the flesh and crime of the old city. Those who look further still will find the true horrors hiding in the dark corners of the city and all have a price tag attached.
Only a select few walk this beat any more. One such soldier now works for the United Nations Weapon Inspection team, tasked with removing errant dangers from the public's possession.
Love the art, and was invested in the story. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan but I really like how everything was given to us and there were some pretty interesting concepts in it. Glad I finally got around to reading it.
Grenade is a dense, beautiful book by Will Kirby¹. Will's packs his characters with detailed outfits, gear, and baubles. It's a strong point of Will's designs, and I loved seeing so many on display.
The product-design-as-world-building - a lot beer and liquor brands - was another highlight. I found it easy to get lost in the background details, almost to a fault.
I enjoyed the conclusion. I wanted to see more development with the relationships. I didn't feel as much as an oomph as I felt I should. But! Your mileage may vary. The same goes for some of the cyber jargon. It felt like Will knew what the characters were talking about, but left me to fill in the blanks.
¹ For what it's worth, Will and I follow each other on twitter dot com. We've promoted each other's work. He's a nice and cool guy, but I tried to disregard how cool and nice he is when composing my thoughts.
