When a nuclear missile is launched from somewhere in the east—North Korea or China—communications from other parts of the earth, ceased. Thirty years later civilization still struggles to become redefined. A new society has formed with new rules. Those that follow the rules can hope for a few years of comfort. Those on the inside of the safety dome have it tough. Those on the outside don’t last long. As far as the eye can see, the earth outside is radioactive, primitive. Blue. These are the stories of the survivors, men and women that struggle to eke out a living in a world gone awry.

I thoroughly enjoy a well-written post-apocalyptic tale. In Blue Earth, author Dawn O Watson does not disappoint. With the lingering effects of radiation enveloping Earth, everything turns blue. The earth is scorched and animals are mutated. The people who remain have gathered together in domed cities where everyone has a job to perform. There are certain positions that are more revered than others. And if found guilty of a crime, the criminal is ostracized and must leave the dome to live in the Blue.

Outside the domes, small groups have banded together. Unlike their more civilized counterparts living under the dome, these outsiders have had to survive by their wits and cunning. It’s a horrible existence made worse by the effects of radiation poisoning. But even the best laid plans (for those beneath the domes) go awry and when that society collapses and all are faced with making a new life in the Blue, they bring with them their old prejudices and weaknesses. In the end, the reader will wonder if we aren’t indeed our own worst enemy.

Well written, multi-layered characters you will either love or hate populate the story. The setting is at once familiar yet terrifying. The storyline is gripping. Reminiscent of the classic Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell in many respects, it is written for today’s audience. I thoroughly enjoyed Blue Earth and give it a solid five stars.
