Dime a Demon [Dramatized Adaptation]

Approximate Running Time: 6 Hours
Content Rating: Ages 18+
Myra Reed’s life is going great. Being a cop is great. Guarding the library of arcane secrets is great. Even dealing with the monsters and gods vacationing in the little beach town of Ordinary, Oregon is great. Then the demon, Bathin, strolls into town and steals Myra’s sister’s soul. So much for great.

Luckily, Myra has a plan to evict the demon and save her sister’s soul. Step one: shut down the portals to hell popping up in town. Step two: get rid of the pink know-it-all unicorn. Step three: don’t die while teaching Death how to be a cop.

Oh, and there’s a step four. Absolutely, positively, no matter what, do not fall in love with the handsome, charming, jerk of a demon she’s trying to kick out of town. Logically, it’s a good plan. But when it comes to Bathin, Myra’s very illogical heart has some plans of its own.

This cozy urban fantasy didn’t live up to the first four books despite listening to it in the excellent Graphic Audio format.

Dime a Demon takes a step away from the main character thus far, Delaney Reed, to focus on her sister, Myra Reed (for this one book).

The problems are: I didn’t like Myra as a main character; didn’t like her love interest, Bathin the demon holding Delaney’s soul; didn’t like a prominent side character, Bathin’s mother who appears in Ordinary as a ridiculous unicorn; I didn’t like the mystery this time; and it didn’t add to the overall story arc.

Had it not been for the Graphic Audio format, I wouldn’t have finished it. But I am not holding this one hiccup against the series that I’ve been well entertained by so far. Glad to know the next book reverts to Delaney as the main.

Series: Ordinary Magic #5
Rating: 2 stars - It was ok

Myra Reed has spent the past year trying to find a way to free her sister's soul from the demon Bathin. Unfortunately she is running out of time to rescue her soul and now Ordinary is dealing with portals from Hell popping up all over town.

This is the first book from Myra’s POV and while I thought I would enjoy a different sister’s perspective for once, I found myself a bit annoyed by her. She is supposed to be the smart sister who has all the knowledge about magic and gods, but she is so reckless in this. She is constantly jumping from one half made plan to another in the hopes she can free her sister's soul. Also her thoughts are so repetitive, especially when it comes to Bathin, that it quickly got old and a bit annoying.

The relationship between Bathin and Myra was one I was interested in seeing more of but I found myself not really enjoying it. By the end of the book, I felt like these two didn’t have a healthy relationship because it was all built around manipulation on Bathin’s part. He basically is using Delaney’s soul just so he can have more time trying to win Myra’s trust, which isn’t a healthy start to a relationship. Basically, I ended up not loving these two.

The demon's attack on Ordinary was interesting. I wasn’t expecting a unicorn to come into play but I knew from the beginning that it was clearly not an innocent being. While the unicorn was very pompous and annoying at times, I also found it amusing. I also enjoyed seeing all the Gods and other supernatural beings playing their background roles in this hunt, especially Than, who has become my favorite God.

Overall, this was not my favorite of the series but I will give the next book a chance. I like this unique town of Ordinary a lot and really wonder what other things these sisters will have to deal with.

Dime a Demon Dramatized Adaptation (Ordinary Magic #5) by Devon Monk What a delightful way to start a new year of reading. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Graphic Audio multi-cast versions of this series. I've also enjoyed Devon Monk's creativity, humor, and storytelling. Ordinary, Oregon is soooo far from its name. In this installment, middle sister Myra must come to terms with what her heart wants. It can't possibly be the sexy demon Bathan. Can it? Add a dragon-pig that can sniff out demons, a pink unicorn that might be more than she seems, vortexes to hell, andl...well...I'll just leave the description there. There were times I wanted to Gibb's Slap™️Myra but that's okay. You'll understand when you read the book. A very solid 4.5 stars for starting my new year off with a smile and a bit of a sniffle, too. Yay!

☆☆ SPOILER ALERT ☆☆

I wanted to believe Myra Reed would be better than the other two sisters, but I was wrong.

She had fear and anger, possibly because one relationship didn't work.

Could that be her only reason? We were never told.

She uses magic but was never formally taught.

She believes she knows better because she is the bookish sister.

Delaney thinks she knows because she is the oldest and the Chief. BS.

Myra needed to repeat everything everyone said, like an anime character.

The lies, the secrets, the withholding of information, personal and otherwise.

Saddening and ridiculous. And I'm not talking about the demon.

Every time someone tried to give Myra some advice on the Bathum, she would reply, "Because he's a demon". Tiring for real̀!

I need a break

Basic Plot: Demon vortexes are opening in Ordinary and the Reed sisters have to figure out how to get rid of them.

Imagine a dragon shapeshifted into a pig staring down a small, pink unicorn. It also eats dishwashers. On top of this are other shenanigans involving frogs, demons, and a very scary pair of scissors. This was Myra's story, not Delaney's. Though Delaney's stolen soul was very key to the plot. Overall, the book moved well and the plot kept going. I did get frustrated by the lack of communication between characters- lots of asking the same questions, not really waiting for answers, and the askees not really volunteering any real information. That bit was frustrating.

This deals with Myra falling in love with the demon that had imprisoned her dad and only released him by taking Delaney’s soul in exchange for their dad’ soul. Along with the usual stuff happening in Ordinary they get a new resident a pink talking unicorn that isn’t happy that it has to hide out as a regular pony. There is more of Death and the pig-dragon in this one as well.

I love this continuing series with paranormal creatures going to a town to be like the humans. Sisters keep the peace in town and get involved with Gods and Demons trying to keep the peace with a lot of romance going through the story.

This installment was a little bit different. It was told in Myra's voice instead of Delaney's. I did like the ending.
