While this was a sweet, pleasant type read, I just didn't love it like I was hoping. I think unrequited-love tropes just aren't for me. Charles has spent his whole life in love with Amelia, but has finally decided to move on and remain a bachelor for the rest of his days, when Amelia senses he is moving on she starts to see him in a new light. The ending also felt a tad rushed. Maybe I would have liked it more if Amelia had to actually win Charles over? Anyway, it was very well written, I liked the supporting cast quite a bit so I think its just falls into a "its not you, its me" type story. For those looking for a very clean, slow-burn romance set in the regency period.

Enjoyable and worth the read…

Happy news for both Charles and Amelia. I love me some HEA’s. And Andrew deserved a happy ending as well.

I love when I read a book and during those first couple of scenes become pulled in and invested completely in the characters. Amelia and Charles intrigued me. The first meeting in this story had my mind running in several directions as to how it would all play out and trying to think through what their history together might be. I haven't read any of the two previous books in this Ladies of Devon series. I have them and have been wanting to read them. Time to fit them into my reading schedule even sooner now. Without reading those previous books, I went into reading this book with a clean slate of not knowing any of these characters and their previous connections/relations/friendships. They were all charming and I found myself thinking they would be some fun friends to have, if they weren't fictional of course.

Amelia is called The Black Widow by society because of the death of her three husbands, especially since she is so young. The author wrote some flashbacks throughout the book for her and her past. I have to say that I loved those flashbacks. I couldn't wait for them to pop up while I was reading her current story. I loved seeing more about her and why she was so guarded, as well as watching her sorrows and healing happen. Her experiences were hard but I loved how she picked herself up with dignity and moved forward with some hope and was able to be empathetic to others in somewhat similar situations.

Charles was such a gentleman. I had to laugh at some of the descriptions of him when he was younger in his trying to get Amelia's attention. But I loved his maturity and love for her and realizing he had to step back if he truly wanted to be her friend. So good!!!! His thoughts and memories and plans for the future were some of my favorite parts to read. I thoroughly enjoyed his character. I thoroughly enjoyed both his and Amelia's character.

By the end of the book I loved seeing their thoughts even more and how their experiences had helped them to become who they were and be ready for each other in a greater way had they not experienced what life had handed them up to that point.

The secondary characters in this book were just as delightful. Hattie cracked me up, but I loved her personality and her determination to keep moving forward. I can't wait for her story and I need to go back and read the other two ladies' stories. They were such a fun group of friends and I loved how they lifted, supported and rallied around each other. One of my favorite parts of reading books is watching the friendships between characters and the friendships in this book were fabulous!

The love story was so gentle and sweet. It was very sweet to watch it develop and the learning and growth that came. Especially as they worked through misconceptions. The author did a great job of tying it all together and showing the power of love.

Content: Clean. There are a few sweet kisses in the book. A couple characters are pregnant and so there is talk of childbirth but nothing overly graphic.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I think this series is one to read in order to better appreciate the history of the characters. That being said, I know I can count on Kasey to deliver a character to root for (in this case, Charles) and the need to google "how do you pronounce Giulia".
I love a good unrequited love trope. I don't think I've read one from the "loved" POV as opposed to the "lover" and I appreciate this twist! It was a little hard for me to relate to Amelia and I was a little disgruntled with her. She is that girl that wants what she can't have and that makes me want to roll my eyes. I did love the "cursed bride" plot device though and how Amelia embraced her widowhood. Charles is, on the other hand, completely lovable and I just wanted to give him a hug. And watch his lake moment on repeat.
Kasey is a fun author to follow. She always makes me adore - or not - her characters and pulling those emotions out of me is what I look for.
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I read this book before the second book due to lack of availability. But I came back to write this review after I finished the second book because I feel like I enjoyed it better without the insight into Charles’ character in book 2 because his character didn’t match in the two books. It was disconcerting and frankly, I was disappointed at the discrepancy.

But without reading book 2, this book was my favorite so far. Romance is a slow burn with lots of connection, thinking and much more communication than in the past two books. Plus, I like the characters and found myself eagerly cheering for the main characters whenever they met. But seriously, who can not cheer for the good guy who’s been steadfastly in love with his lady for thirteen years? There was lots of cute scenes, action and even a dash of mystery. I throughly enjoyed this book.

Can She Finally See the Real Man?
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2021
Amelia Fawn's life did not go as she expected when she accepted the betrothal of her first husband. His death just a short time after their marriage left her a widow at a very young age. She was willing to try again after her mourning period was over, but when that husband died unexpectedly leaving her a widow again the Ton began to call her the Black Widow. When husband number three died she vowed never to marry again because she began to believe she was cursed. Amelia was an independent strong woman who hadn't let her life's circumstances break her. I enjoyed watching the interaction she had with her good friends from the previous books in this series.

Charles Fremont has loved Amelia Fawn his entire life but she wanted nothing to do with him romantically and actually looked down on him. After watching her marry three different men, he finally made a decision to stop pursuing her and to just try to be a friend to her.

When Charles and Amelia are thrown together to try to solve a mystery concerning both of them- Amelia began to see Charles for the good, kind gentleman he really was. She actually began to think that she could become friends with him. Would she be open to becoming more if she could stop believing she was cursed?

This was such a great story and a nice addition to the series. I am looking forward to the story of Hattie Green and the man that she believes she saw in a foreshadowed vision.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

I have been interested in Amelia's story from the beginning of the series. I was grateful to finally learn about her husbands, their relationships and deaths. I knew there had to be so much more to her and I was right. I really enjoyed reading her story. She is a wonderful person who has been through so much. I loved watching her get to know the real Charles. It was really sweet. Charles is wonderful and has been in love with Amelia as long as he can remember. He is so loving and patient. I felt for him as he tried to navigate being Amelia's friend. This was a sweet story. I enjoyed seeing the rest of the friends again too and how they are doing.

I really enjoyed this book. I have liked the other books in this series but I was glad to finally get Amelia's story because I was curious about how she became a widow three times over. I loved how Kasey gave us background into Amelia's past marriages throughout the book. I also loved seeing how Amelia's view of Charles changed as she saw him from a more mature light. I really thought this book was well written and had good character development. I'm excited for the next book in the series.

Unrequited love second chance or third or fourth

Another sweet book in the series. I was eager to learn more about Amelia’s story. And I already liked. Barked and grew to like him even more. Amelia took a while for me to warm to. Sweet regency romance.

I was excited to read this one, because the stage had really been set for this romance. We had learned about The Widow of Falbrooke Court (Amelia) since book 1 of the series. Her story was so intriguing. Widowed 3 times at such a young age! How did it happen! So I was really interested to learn more about her.

description

I may have hyped myself up a little too much, because this one let me down a little. I loved Charles! Charles Fremont had been in love with Amelia since they were children, but she never gave him the time of day. She rejected all of his advances. And he stood by and watched as she married three other men, while struggling to overcome his feelings for her.

In this book it just felt like Amelia was too cold. I understand that she has gone through a lot, but it bugs me the way she has treated Charles throughout the series. And it kind of bugged that he still loved her after all the rejections. It just made me feel bad for him.

Then all of a sudden she just decides that maybe he is a good guy. I mean it didn't even seem like she was civil to him. I mean, I get it, but it made me angry through most of the book. I did enjoy it, though. I think I just had really high expectations and ended up being mad at the main character for most of the book.

bookquote

The Widow of Falbrooke Court can be read as a standalone, but it also has some characters in it that have shown up earlier in the series. I love when books include characters we already love in them. It’s great to see more to their story than an epilogue can provide. The previous book in the series (The Lady of Larkspur Vale) was one of my favorite reads last year. I really think that readers will enjoy it more if they read the entire series.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t a fan of Amelia Fawn at the beginning of the story. She repeatedly thinks of the hero as idle and lazy. When she thinks he is no longer interested in her and likes someone else, she selfishly wishes he didn’t even though she isn’t interested in him. At least she recognized her selfishness though. She also didn’t notice him for his kindness and character, she only become interested in him due to his muscles and physical build.

Charles Fremont reminds me a little of a lost puppy who is trying to find his way. He is so loyal and caring about other people.

The characters that Stockton has created for the Ladies of Devon series feel like old friends, and I look forward to visiting with them again.

I love friends-to-lovers stories and this one is pretty sweet. It's nice to finally see a hero who's not dark-and-dangerous and is closer to an actual human being. It's very Austenesque, pure and gentle, and all characters are well-written.

Book 3 of the Ladies of Devon series was a bit easier to read than the first two. However, I felt the main female character to be a bit shallow. While the main male character had been in love with her his entire life, she had spurned him multiple times. Yet when it appeared his affections had turned to someone other than her? She wasn't happy. A touch of, "I don't want him, but no one else can have him either" came through loud and clear.
While Amelia had suffered greatly in her love life, she still remained a conceited, arrogant woman concerned with only her wants and desires and not about anyone else. She honestly believed that every man she spoke "amiably" with wanted to marry her. Amelia laid the blame on Charles' shoulders for how she had viewed him growing up. Her thoughts of, " It occurred to her that she hadn’t ever really known Charles the way others had, because he hadn’t given her the opportunity. By forcing her to constantly rebuff him, he had effectively placed a wall between them..." proved that to be a fact.
While the story had the usual HEA, I can't rightly say the main female character deserved one. The main male character, however, DID deserve one...but maybe with a different woman. While Amelia finally realized she loved him, as well as admitted the truth about other things along the way, she really put Charles through too many years of heartache. Because of her attitude, one couldn't really say there was true chemistry between them. There was more animosity and angst than chemistry or passion. Oh, but the drama? Yep, there was a great deal of that in this story, for certain.
As much as I'd like to include this with the Keeper for the Shelves books, I just can't justify doing so.

I have to say, I’m not usually one for giving spoilers in my reviews if I can help it but with this story, pretty much everything I either liked or didn’t like about this book is going to be a spoiler in someway or another. So if you don’t want spoilers I’ll just state here that this is a clean regency read with lovely characters and a sweet ending so that you need read no further 🙃

Now, as to the potential spoilers...
I really enjoyed the character development in this story. Charles is so patient throughout - I like how he decides to just be a friend to Amelia instead of relentlessly pursuing her, only to be rejected again. I also find it rather funny, and yet so realistic, that it’s only after this that Amelia actually starts to notice him - because of his lack of attentiveness to her. This is the sort of thing that makes the story realistic and relatable. Not every hero or heroine is going to fall in love at first sight or at least not reciprocate for those who do 😂
I also really like how caring and honest Amelia is. The acknowledgment of her own immaturity and stubbornness being a hinderance to her eventual happiness is something that I like appreciate seeing in any character. Again, I think because of the realistic nature of it. It makes it possible to actually imagine and relate to the characters as if they’re you’re own friends.
One other thing that I particularly appreciated and enjoyed is in connection to the authors note - I find historical aspects of regency novels in particular quite fascinating so I truly enjoy it when the author includes tidbits of their research. The effort to be historically accurate is always something to I appreciate and enjoy.
So finally now for the one thing I didn’t like, which was to do with the Cunning Woman and her incantations etc. Those sorts of things really make me feel uncomfortable and it affected my enjoyment of the story whenever it came into play or discussing. It’s something I personally stay well away from, so I’m really hoping that it is not going to be in the next story.
Overall though, as I said at the outset, this is a clean read with great characters.
It has a nice mixture of suspense and intrigue as well which I quite enjoyed, as well as plenty of sweet moments between quite a few of the characters, including ones from earlier in the series! So if you haven’t read the previous books in the series already, I do suggest you read them first so that 1) you understand all that’s implied/referred to in this story and 2) so that you don’t spoil those stories for yourself by reading their continuing stories in this one first. Of course... if you’ve read the whole of my review I’m guessing spoilers aren’t so much of a worry to you 😉 but still. Definitely worth reading the books in order if you can 😊
I received an ARC of this book from the author however this in no way influenced my opinion and I am under no obligation to leave this review.

"He looked up, his eyebrows drawn, his eyes glittering. Water poured down around them as the rain intensified along with the warmth in her chest, beating steadily against the ground and the stone steps leading down to the lawn, encasing them in a curtain of torrential rain."

This quote is from my favorite scene in the book. Then there is a pond scene that is probably a close second...and there are so many other scenes that I really enjoyed. If you couldn't tell already, I loved this book. Amelia and Charles have a story full of heartache, loss, rejection and a love that is subtle for one party, and ever loyal from the other. It is a love that builds into something greater, that really can stand the storms life throws at them.

Amelia's character has had quite the journey to where she is at the beginning of the book. The subtle grows and gains a voice over the course of the book. Amelia has ALOT of growing to do in how she views and treats people, and even herself. Once she does that she can better allow her heart to heal and be opened to the idea of love again. And Charles is just the man to convince her heart of such things. I just adored Charles. Handsome, broad shoulders, kind, hardworking, trustworthy, loyal and VERY patient. His love is one that has existed for years, and I think that is why he is just the one to help Amelia see her worth and future with more hope and definitely some love.

Kasey Stockton did a beautiful job with this story in the Ladies of Devon series. Now this is book three, the first I have read in the series. I do wish I had read the first two in the series. Not having done so I don't think it ruined the story for me at all, there were just a few characters that appear in the friend group and I know their interactions would make a little more sense if I had started from the beginning. Having said that, I still LOVED the story of Amelia and Charles and hope they have appearances in future books of the series.

This story is my first experience with a work by Kasey Stocton. I enjoy clean romance and am a bit partial to stories set in the Regency period. I selected this novel because of the many four and five-star reviews awarded by other reviewers. Never before had read a story where the heroine had been widowed three times before she was twenty-five years old. Ms. Stocton did a credible job in making this set-up completely believable. Her technique of using brief flashbacks to explain each of Amelia’s previous marriages was particularly effective. I was also impressed with how Charles, who had loved Amelia since childhood and had suffered repeated rejections by Amelia over the years, had retained his feelings for Amelia. Lesser men would have given up once the object of their affection married someone else. The fact that he stayed true after Amelia married three times speaks loudly on his behalf.

After reading probably more than a hundred Regency period stories, I was somewhat surprised to learn that if a thief stole a horse, the horse’s owner could get into trouble with the law if he trespassed on the thief’s property to retrieve the stolen horse. Since this scenario is a key element of this story, I trust Ms. Stocton did her research. If she did not, then a major element of this story falls apart.

Unfortunately, the story seemed to drag to some degree and I had trouble maintaining my interest at times until I got to the winding-up scenes, at which point everything came together quickly for an outstanding conclusion. Four-Stars.

I am trying so very hard to get through this book. I am listening to the audible version. I am finding it so very tedious. I am perhaps half way through. The writer has focused all her attention on the relationship between the two main characters (Amelia and Charles). They meet constantly. They have known each other all their lives. He has loved her since they were young, but she has never reciprocated. She a widow thrice over is now back in his presence constantly. But all she does is look at his masculinity and continually finds herself attracted to him (his broad shoulders, his eyes, etc.), but with no feelings of loving care, only lust? Really? Is this the way most women react to a man. No, I don't think so who is constantly in their presence? But on and on it goes. He is trying to move on from her, but has constant thoughts of her. OVER AND OVER AND OVER. It is the same scene in different places, but the same result. There is no real story so far other than her first husband's horse is missing and another widow is pregnant and very ill. I find Amelia extremely selfish and think he should have chunked her long ago. I will update when I'm done with the book. Wish me luck!! UPDATE . . . I finished the book. Boy was it hard. My opinions have not changed. I did not enjoy this book and will likely not attempt another by this author. We will see.

4.5 stars The Widow of Falbrooke Court was a satisfying read in which fans of the Ladies of Devon series finally learn the backstory of Amelia Fawn's Black Widow nickname. I have been anxiously awaiting this story as a fan of the first two novels in this series and having developed a love for both Amelia and Charles before they finally got their story. While this is a standalone, I personally think readers will enjoy it more if they have read the other books in the series first, particularly The Lady of Larkspur Vale where Charles character is introduced.
What I really enjoyed and appreciated in this novel was the clever way in which the author revealed Amelia's past marriages and what happened. I like that Charles was ever faithful in his devotion, but ultimately Amelia had to change and realize what she failed to see all along. Her character growth fit very well with the set up the author created and made her change of heart toward Charles believable.
This book had the added bonus of a little bit of a mystery going on which kept me turning pages as I was eager to find out how things would all resolve.
A clean Regency read, I highly recommend this book and cannot wait for Hattie's story.

This was another wonderful book in this series. I am a fan of Kasey Stockton's writing, especially her regency romances. This one is no exception.

Amelia Fawn is a widow, three times over now, and she is determined to never marry again, believing that she is cursed. None of her husbands have lasted a year in marriage to her and she doesn't want to bring this curse to anyone else. She yearns to be a mother and to have children, though, but has resigned herself to this lot in life.

Charles Fremont has been in love with Amelia since they were children. He was nothing but an annoyance to Amelia and she couldn't wait to be rid of him. But, now, she begins to see him as a kind and generous man and begins to develop feelings for him. These feelings are foreign to her and she doesn't quite know what to do about them since she has determined to never marry again.

I enjoyed the progression of the story and the budding relationship between Charles and Amelia and how incredibly patient Charles was with her. There is, of course, a happy ending and the story is clean and sweet and has all those wonderful feels.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

I really enjoyed the other books in this series and so I was excited to read Amelia's story. Charles has been in love with her since childhood but Amelia has rejected his suit time and time again - she has even been married, and widowed, three times. I loved reading her backstory to find out more about her husbands and why she married them. It was difficult to like her at first because of the way she treated and talked about Charles, but as she grew and changed, so did my opinion of her.

I enjoyed the mystery storyline, the romance story for some side character, and the interactions with the Swans - what a great group of friends. The romance between Charles and Amelia was also very sweet and very satisfying for Amelia to finally see Charles for who he really is.

4.5 stars for this fun regency read! I highly recommend the whole series and am excited to read Hattie's story next.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but a positive review was not required.

Ugh. Just... Amelia is severe and joyless, Charles obviously can't leave her alone, and then all of the sudden she actually does love him? Just.. No. This is every worst thing about bad movies. If he hangs around long enough she will eventually love him? That's not how real life works.

And then Amelia thinks he loves someone else and spends the whole book pining. It's ridiculous. Then the plot itself was tedious too. Some horses are stolen, there's a baseball game that goes on and on for no reason..

I read the previous story in this romance and found it interesting, so continued on with this next book. This one drags on more than the previous one. It also lacks anything (steam or intrigue) that could otherwise keep me engaged.

*sigh* Guys, I just love Kasey’s books. When I finish reading, I am left so happy and cheered and this book was no exception. It was so beautifully written and absolutely delicious. My soul was happy.

Amelia is certain she is cursed. Three times she has married; three times her husband has died before a year of marriage is up. She has vowed to wear her mourning attire and adopt her Black Widow nickname for the remainder of her days, most certainly to remain single, and most definitely never to marry Charles.

Charles has loved Amelia since their childhood years and has not been shy about showing his affection, at times most ardently. But Amelia has rebuffed him every time and he’s given up. She still has his heart, but he’ll never ask for hers ever again.

I have read every book in this series and loved each one. I love getting more of the story for each member of the Literary Society, or Swans, and I was most anxious for this book. I am most pleased with how this story played out and sincerely loved the entire thing. Watching Amelia mature and her character develop was refreshing. In the other books I always thought she was a bit cold and condescending. I enjoyed seeing her inner thoughts and warm demeanor and watching her learn how to deeply love someone.

I loved how Charles decided to deal with the problem of being in love with a woman who isn’t interested. He was so kindhearted and thoughtful and I think he was the perfect hero. It didn’t hurt to read about his superior physique—and the scene at the pond was pretty amazing. Thanks for that, Kasey!

I loved loved having more of Nick and Giulia in this book. I missed them in the last book! I love those two. It was fun to see Nick’s friendship with Charles and Giulia’s fiery personality. And also her uncle. I still just love him. Mrs. Halpert provided an interesting subplot and I empathized with her so much! I have never been so sick as hyperemisis gravidarum but I do get fairly sick during my pregnancies. I found myself feeling so grateful for modern medicine that can help to some degree with that sickness. Amelia’s brother is pretty cool. I liked his kindness and also his awkwardness. He’s cute.
I enjoyed this book so much and am really looking forward to the fourth. So well written, Kasey!

Kasey Stockton writes charming stories you can get lost in and “The Widow Of Falbrooke Court” is certainly no exception. Ms. Stockton is incredibly talented and has a wonderful way of pulling you into a the story. This is an entertaining and engaging book sure to make you smile.

This is book three in “The Ladies Of Devon” series and while a standalone I wholeheartedly recommend you read the all and in order if possible. The definitely build upon one another.

Poor Amelia, three times a widow is afraid of love and has sworn off marriage again. Who could blame her? The ton refers to her as The Black Widow. Amelia is strong and could have at one time been called resilient but after losing three husbands she had given up on love believing she has been cursed. At first I wasn’t sure if I found Amelia likable but the author did such a beautiful job of weaving glimpses of her past, the pain and heartache, into the story making it easy to understand her and and root for her happiness.

Of course there was Charles, he’d been there all along having fallen in love with her years ago. He was such a good man, always so sweet, kind and he was always there to help her. But the heart can only take so much rejection and Charles gave up hoping she’d fall in love with him. Though these two had much to go through Amelia finally realized Charles was there all along, she just couldn’t (as my grandmother would say) see the forest for the trees.

The characters are wonderfully written and the story is beautifully told. There are so many things happening in this delightful story and the author has woven charming characters from the previous books into the storyline enhancing it even more.

I loved the story! I enjoyed watching Amelia and Charles find their way past fears and misconceptions. I loved watching Amelia’s growth throughout the story. I also have to mention what a delight it was seeing things from Charles perspective and how through it all he loved her with an everlasting love. I enjoyed the mystery element of the story.

I can’t say enough good things about the story or even this talented author. Suffice to say her stories touch your heart and leave you feeling good inside.

Thank you so much Kasey for this delightful and charming story

Coniscent of the arduous struggles and challenging triumphs, as the perilous twists and dramatic turns unfold, secrets confessed, revelations unmasked and promises pledged, wrapping this jewel up sleek, shiny and tight. Mischief and shenanigans descend in a flurry of cunning strategy and brilliant maneuvers, sketchy lines and shattered perimeters solidify as limitations are amplified and tested, baring the soaring ups and agonizing downs, beautiful in it's simplicity and breathtaking in it's depth, catapulting this baby to life flawlessly. The characters, banter, dialogue, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits balance fluidly, adding depth and diversity, transforming into outstanding personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. Do not let the tragedies of your past keep you from choosing happiness for your present and future.

I really needed a book that was so good I couldn’t put it down, and this was it. I’ve read the other books in this series, and have always been most curious about the widow Amelia. This love story was different. They weren’t enemies or friends, but they still had a lot to overcome to see each other clearly. This is a story about devotion and giving someone space when they need it. I loved the idea that how we see people, isn’t always accurate. I think relationships after widowhood are complicated and different for everyone, but I loved the idea of realizing there is happiness after tragedy. Amelia had to learn not to let her tragedies keep her from moving forward with her dreams. I usually don’t like when books move back and forth between past and present, but I loved the short glimpses into Amelia’s past that helped the reader understand her better. It was well done and well timed. Very well written; a book I will be re-reading.

I received an ARC for my review. The opinions are my own.
