West Coast Wolves #1

The Reluctant Alpha

Rate this book
“As much as I felt bad for this Elisha person—God, my heart was breaking for the young man and all he'd been through—I was also angry. I'd left that pack in my rearview ten years ago for a good reason.”

Matthias Longclaw is happy living his life on the back of his beloved Harley with his five best friends and brothers-in-arms at his side. The West Coast Wolves are a rare pack of alphas, made up of unwanted orphans and second-born sons. The packs they were born to may not have wanted them, but they’ve built a solid family of their own. They help where they can, doing random acts of kindness and expecting nothing in return, just helping to build a world they want to live in.

Then Matt gets a call from an old childhood buddy. He’s being called back—begged to return—to reclaim his birthright and save a life in the process. The problem is… to do it, he will have to take a mate. And if he refuses? The omega will die.

Torn between his duty to help others and his resentment of his old pack, Matt never expects for Elisha Whitetail to tilt his world and change everything. Can Matt and Elisha rebuild a broken pack while tending to a new love and a growing family while dealing with outside threats from neighboring packs?

They’re wolves. Strong, proud, and willing to do what it takes when their community needs them… whatever it takes.

This is the first in a new mpreg series about finding joy in a hard world, building family, and discovering that life can surprise a person when they least expect it. Although this world has harsher themes than my previous books, it still has the same heart you’d expect. Plus a dose of my irreverent humor and all the naughty, knotty heat that comes with true mates. It wouldn’t be a Susi Hawke book without it. Be sure to read the author's note at the beginning for possible trigger warnings.

I'm a total fan of M/PREG Paranormal Romances, first and foremost as a reader. I'm excited to share my own omegaverse(s) with you. What's not to love about adorable Omegas and the Alpha men who love them? If I'm not writing about men sporting baby bumps, I'm definitely reading about them!

I'm a native of Las Vegas, NV, so I'm pre-wired to love everything weird ~ although I don't find any kind of love to be weird. I'm a cis woman who's been happily married to the same lovable lug for 18 years. We have a 16yr old son, well, at least I think we do? Either that, or we have a ghost that eats all our food and uses up all wifi playing xbox while screaming into a headset.

As a new author, it's been amazing to find the amount of support that I've been given from readers and my fellow authors. Feel free to message me, I love to chat with fellow readers. Am I a reader? Heck yeah! In fact, I'm never certain that I can completely trust an author who isn't a fellow bibliophile.

I will try to update here when I'm doing promotional parties & chats. I usually do those on Facebook. If you haven't already signed up for my newsletter, you should totally do it! I only send out NL's to announce new releases or important announcements. I also like to note in my NL what I'm currently reading along with a cover shot and the link for anyone who is interested.

I look forward to interacting with everyone here!

This was insulting.
So the summary promised an Alpha Wolf MC and what I got was h/c mpreg with an abused Omega from an author who doesn't know the difference between rape and dubcon and can't write about either without ending up titilation territory.
I still don't know when or why the M/M Romance author community decided that the only reason to have a/b/o was to get a guy pregnant and to make Omegas second class citizens that need to be rescued by an alpha. It's a good trope, don't get me wrong, but it's not the only one out there and I wanted the story the summary suggested.
There's a huge infodump in the beginning to establish the "worldbuilding" and the further into the book you get the more you understand why all of that pesky info needed to get out of the way at the beginning. The "dialogue" between characters takes over infodumping duty for the rest of the book which unfortunately means that nobody ever comes close to sounding like an actual person.
That's ok though because the author seems to never have intended to write about actual people anyway. It's one thing to have your main characters be kind of ruled by instincts - it's actually the thing that makes a/b/o interesting! It's another to have them be nothing but walking tropes.
The insulting part  was the author trying to have her cake and eat it too when it came to the darker themes. I LOVE me some dark themes. The darker the better actually. So I'm absolutely the right reader for this content. It also means that I know when it is written by someone who has spent at least a minute thinking about the implications. Listen, either have your dubcon be dubcon or don't have it in there. It's actually worse to have your main character essentially be a rapist (remember dubcon does not exist outside of fic) and try to justify it to himself and thus the reader than just have him go through with it. And no having the "victim" give enthusiastic consent after the fact is even more stupid since you just finished establishing him as having been systematically raped and abused for the past six months.

The author herself states that she usually writes fluffier stuff and clearly decided to take a walk on the titilating dark side here. Well, she utterly failed and I don't think I'll be interested in anything more from her.

This was a good opener to this new series from Susi Hawke although I thought more would focus on the oddness of having a 'pack' of five alphas than happened.

That aside, it's a decent paced omegaverse shifter story with some really loveable characters who are seriously sweet, like Eli, and powerful and protective alphas like Matt.

I'm looking forward to finding out more about the other four alphas and seeing how the various packs all get on with their new leaders in place.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

What a treat!

It's been too long since I've done a Susi Hawke omegaverse romance. I love the way she sets up the first novels in her series for upcoming episodes. The introduction of Eli's two younger omega brothers, and knowing all Matt's Alpha buddies are going to get packs of their own, I am so looking forward to getting their stories.

Nick J. Russo narrates this one and his style is the perfect match for Susi Hawke's brand of romance. He makes the cutest voices for the young wolves, and I don't have to tell his fans how wonderfully he performs the romantic scenes.

100% pure enjoyment!

This was ok.

I mean it's not really anything special.
The dialogue was a bit stilted and weird at times.

I would have liked to see more of the alphas together first, because that would have been interesting. How alphas live and travel together. That and being best friends.

Maybe the next books are better? I'm intrigued about the other alphas and how they would find their omegas.

The Reluctant Alpha
By Susi Hawke

Rather than fight his father to the death to become Alpha of his pack Matthias leaves the pack and forms a MC called the West Coast Wolves with four other Alphas. When an old friend calls and asks him to come home to take over the pack and save the life of his Uncle's mate he arrives to discover the Omega his Uncle kidnapped and forced to mate and impregnate him is actually Matthias's true mate.

I very much enjoyed this book. All of the MC's are very likable and relatable. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.

The "victim" was raped for months, got pregnant, was scared for his life and his pup's, was abondaned by his father, was suffering for a long time, mentally and physically, traumatized!! Yet, he woke up, after being "raped", by another man, a stranger, because fu***ing someone while he's delirious, in so much pain and pregnant 😳 is rape, even if it's to save the victim's life, hell what premise is this !!! Anyway, he wakes up, the so called victim, all cutesy and flirty, and thinking about "heavenly sex" !! what!! No psychological devastation, no reprecussions, no anger, nothing!! The author just shrug it off... the victim was up and healthy after a few hours sleep,... how? and soooo freaking intimate with his so called perfect angelic "mate" : the raper!
The "rape" never was discussed, the victim psychology never tackled.. this book really rubbed me the wrong way...

Estuvo bien.
Algunas cosas pasaban muy rápido y otras muy lento. Me dió la sensación de que la autora se perdía cuando escribía😂

Elisha y Matt fueron interesantes pero lo que más llamó mi atención fue el grupo de alfas de Matt😅

Please be aware of the warning in the blurb. This story deals with physical abuse, rape, the selling of omegas and so much more.
This was a good start to this series. And while I loved these guys and the small pack they formed as alphas and family, I’m actually curious about Lucien. You’ll see what I mean. But this story is about Matt and Elisha.
Matt, being the true heir of the pack he left, wanted nothing to do with it ever again. Having to deal with the physical abuse at the hands of his father day in and out, when he hit 18, it was time to go. He happily ran with his pack now, the West Coast Wolves. Five alphas who had family issues of their own. All he knew is this was his family, his friends and he’d gladly do anything for them as they would him. And he’s about to need them. When he gets a call from the beta of his old pack, Matt realizes he’s missed a lot while being gone. Not only does he need to help the pack in it’s precarious situation, he needs to help an omega who is about to die and is with child. What Matt didn’t plan on was when he caught a whiff of this omega, it was his true mate, and even more changed. Once Elisha was safe and not dying, he filled Matt in on things that were truly going on as well as the rest of the pack committee. Matt knows he’s going to need help in fixing this and with the help of his 4 brothers, they do all they can to start making things right. The first being, Matt has to challenge and kill the alpha that’s now in charge. But Elisha knows the alpha, as it’s his father, and he’s scared. He doesn’t want to lose his mate as he’s just found him. It’s going to take all the dirty tricks they can come up with and a few prayers and hope that things are finally going to change.
I love Matt and his brothers. They are exactly what alphas should be. Not domineering or trying to take charge of everyone. They should be compassionate and rule and lead in a proper manner. And all of them believe in everyone’s opinion being taken in consideration and that omegas or their true mates, have equal rights in the relationship. Which is how it should be. But because of the domineering way other alphas have been, it’s going to take a lot to get others to trust that this is a real thing. And it breaks my heart. It broke me too, to see this punk alphas and how they treat omegas, and what they were willing to do to get their hands on some, no matter the age. It’s disgusting. So for me, yeah, Matt and his crew were perfect. Because they are real men, real beings. Refusing to be anything but good to those who deserve it, especially women, children and omegas. Heck, they’d even take in more alphas if they needed to. Their goal was to protect and care for those who needed it. Period. And I love it. It didn’t make life easy, but the trust they earned from those under them, was the most precious gift they could have ever gotten because of it. Because they earned it. They didn’t force it. They earned it. And that made all the difference.

In a word: Don’t read the thing. I really can’t recommend this one and honestly I almost DNF’d it a few times. This kinda seems like the author’s first foray into stories with darker themes and content, but she doesn’t pull it off right. The tone of this book is hard to pin down, and it made me uncomfortable at some of the darker moments in the story. The worldbuilding here isn’t totally fleshed out, but from what I can gather this is a harsher sort of omegaverse, with a lot of violence and aggression. Matty and Elisha are the alpha/omega pairing in this book, and even by omegaverse standards their relationship was pretty underdeveloped. Also there is literally no romance here. None. Sure, Matty and Elisha are in a relationship and they’re close and they tell each other ‘I love you’ frequently, but I wasn’t feeling any of it. Their relationship had very little depth. It feels like the author decided that they were true mates so neither of them had to put in any work on their relationship. And it gets even weirder considering that Elisha has been through some pretty traumatic shit – including kidnapping, abuse, and rape – and it’s all basically glossed over so that he and Matty can have a no-drama relationship. It was pretty off-putting. Frankly, the time spent building the relationship was instead spent on padding and info-dumping conversations. I liked some of the dialogue between Matty and his friends, and some of the lighter moments were somewhat amusing, and the world created here was fairly interesting (though not something I was personally into for the most part), but most of the book was a huge downer for me. I thought the premise was interesting, but the execution was terrible.

I can see Susi Hawke being some folks jam. She isnt mine.

The Reluctant Alpha:

* Hawke uses the dialogue to info dump. To an extreme. It makes the dialogue completely unnatural. Worse still, I didn’t feel respected as a reader.
* Hawke warns us that this series explores “darker themes” than her pervious books. The problem is that it wasn’t done well. The book ends up being an uncomfortable mix of dark content (including dubious consent) smothered in juvenile fluff and cheese. It doesn’t mix or flow well.
* The plot and the characters are incredibly weak and one dimensional. All conflicts were resolved too quickly, too easily, and too perfectly.
* I read shifter stories for the tropes, but these were taken to extreme, and beyond the tropes, the writing is riddled with cliches.

So yeah. I don’t see myself reading more by this author, but each to their own. If Susi Hawke is your jam, all the power to you.

This book is a little sappy and very sweet. Sometimes you just need something to make you feel warm and good. A little pick me up. This book delivers on that. I did get a little turned off at the continual reminder of the potential non-con but other than that this was a good set up a new shifter world with it's special omegas. Look forward to reading about the other band of brother alphas that had created their own set of rules.

I knew going into this book it was a mpreg book, but didn’t realize it was going to be right off the bat?? I thought it was going to be more towards the end, you know? Story sounds intriguing but the writing had a little too much info dumping for me. Like, just give me the characters! I don’t need pages and pages of backstory and characters explaining things to each other.

DNF @ 10%.

Trigger warnings so far for mentions of abuse and mentions of murder.

4.25 Stars!

The Reluctant Alpha is book 1 in Susi Hawke's new series following the West Coast Alphas, a group of Alpha friends who formed a sort of MC and have been roaming the roads after being thrown from or leaving their previous packs.

First in line is Matt, who is called back home so he can save Elisha, his uncle's pregnant omega mate, who is in danger of dying after Elisha's father killed his Alpha and left his own son to die. Unable to refuse such a request, Matt returns home only to find out Elisha is his true mate. Once he saves Elisha and mates with him, they need to take the pack back from Monty, Elisha's father, and avenge what he tried to do to Elisha. Unfortunately, it's not only him that is after them.

I really liked Matt and Elisha, they were really well-suited for each other. Matt, strong and reliable, who unlike his own father and uncle was willing to do whatever it took to make his new pack thrive and to treat Elisha as his equal and not just a baby incubator. And Elisha, who despite being only 19, was very mature for his age and very competent in handling a lot of the things needed to help settle their new pack into their homes and rebuild the town. Them being true mates means this is very insta-love, yet Matt made sure to make Elisha know he had a say in everything in their relationship and always treated him with love and respect, which I loved. Of course, Elisha and Matt having so much chemistry helped a lot.

There's some action and some bad guys, although there's also a lot of world-building, which wasn't quite as exciting, but was to be expected since this is book 1 in the series. Still, it was lovely getting to know some of the shifters in their pack and Matt's Alpha friends, whose stories I can't wait to read, and I hope we'll get to catch up with Matt, Elisha and their family in future installments. Recomendable!

I really enjoyed how Susi has set up this new series. There are five alphas in the WCW and the first man we focus on is Matthias. Matt is called back to his home pack to save Elisha from death after his alpha is killed and to take over his birth right pack.
Matt and Elisha have such a sweet relationship. It doesn't start under the best circumstances but this is a couple that are fated to be together and that shines through in how they are with each other as well as interacting with other pack members.
There is such a great group of characters in this book! There are strong bonds of friendship between the WCW, guys that are ready to stand by each other through everything and definitely support that Matt is in need of when it comes to setting things right with his pack after his Uncle was so selfish and self absorbed, a fight against Elisha's father, as well as other alphas who are determined to come and take what they can. Lots of action and drama keep things moving throughout the story as well as the strong bonds that build between the MC's and the pack.
Definitely another recommended read from Susi Hawke. I'm excited to read more from this series and the other men from the WCW who had their own paths established in this book.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Let me start by saying that the author's note at the beginning helps to understand a lot.
Now, I read some reviews and comments about this book that made me doubt some things about it, but as I read it, I actually didn't see what the problem was: it's an omegaverse with more details than other similar books - like how omegas have some powers - and a venom that made the Alpha bite the omega since the beginning, just so he could save his life. The alternative was letting him die, so I get it had to be done - a plus is that they are actually true mates too, so, yeah.
Matt is a very caring alpha, and he works hard to right the wrongs made by his father and his uncle.
Eli is strong and has an intriguing character. His two brothers were well built too. I can't wait to see what they do with the town if we can see more of this pack from the next books.
I'm very interested in reading about the other alpha's stories too, as they all have different backgrounds and scars to face.

This book sounded really good and had a lot of potential but I felt like the opportunities were not really taken advantage of which made me feel disappointed. It isn't a bad book but it could have been great.

This series seems like it will follow each of the west coast wolves in finding their fated mates and likely saving them from awful treatment. This world building was mediocre at best. I wanted to understand this world but I felt like all I ever got were tiny pieces of the puzzle. I felt like this author struggled with finding the balance between plot and romance and because of that, in my opinion, the whole book suffered.

I think the "romance" was kind of doomed from the start. Beyond all the starting drama and such, I think the author didn't allow enough time to really believe this couple was in love. It felt like how I imagine an arranged marriage with mutual cooperation and respect but none of the feels. For me, this book evoked no emotion and I'm not really sure why... maybe it was just missing that magic that authors sew into their stories.

Overall, I concluded that this author talked themselves into putting too much into this first story (introducing a new world, new MCs and their pasts, the main plot, the romance, the secondary plot, the set up for next story, ect.) And because of that this book suffered but I am intrigued enough to continue reading so bring on book 2!

Started off so well...

Really enjoyed the initial few chapters then it started to drag. My issues: just not gritty enough. Yeah we get that the alphas were all decent guys but they might as well have been the same character. They are meant to be badass shifter alphas with a tendency for violence and instead they were a bunch of tear welling teddy bears with never a harsh word or moment between them. It was all too nice and friendly not realistic in the slightest. I loved the omega character but a little bit of reservation between the Two of them would have been nice. True mates or not they were still virtual strangers in the begining so acting like they've been together forever was irritating. That and loving kids you've known for 5 minutes who strangely accept you back with no issues even though you just killed their father, abusive or not. Cherry on top, a car with 4 alphas in it gatecrash a PACK bbq in the middle of the day and actually expect to make off with 2 children omegas (they'd have to wait to become of age), WTF. Who would ever be that stupid!! Just annoying. Even the fight scene was cheesy, no one else injured in the slightest. Sorry, please try harder for the next one!

A great start to the series!

Matt and Eli were so sweet together and I enjoyed watching them interact, banter and laugh.

There was quite a lot of drama concerning the pack. Several interesting things went down and Matt’s brothers find themselves being given an opportunity too good to miss.

Lucian is next and I can’t wait to read his story and what’s in store for him.

*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*

Audio: 20/12/20

Eli and Matt didn’t come together under the best of circumstances. The intensity of their bond was breathtaking and I loved how they were perfectly in tune with each other.

Matt was sweet and gave Eli the time, patience and love he needed to make a fresh start.

Eli was sweet and he made me laugh with his fiery attitude.

Great start to the series!

The Reluctant Alpha by Susi Hawke is the first book in the new West Coast Wolves series. Heat, sweetness, humor... this book sets the bar high for this series. I immediately was drawn in and devoured this book. This is going into my must read multiple times list. The world building, character developing.. I can not wait for every single book to be release.

There is a bit to unpack with this book. First, I am a huge fan of Susi Hawke. I'll read and buy pretty much all of her works. I received this as an arc and this is my honest review.

I am a huge fan of MC romance. I've read so many I can recite different aspects of them. This being her first "MC Romance", I give it a solid A. Its more nomadic than motorcycle club, but you can see the brotherhood between the Alphas.

The world that this book is set in, is a bit common for a shifter novel, but there are quite a few differences. With the basic "Humans don't know we exist", there is still a shifter council that governs over all the packs with their own sub-government. Gammas are inner council, where as in other shifter books, the second in command is usually the one the pack Alpha goes to for advice. The Deltas are soldiers, where as in other books, those would be Betas. I like the addition of the Gammas and Deltas. It gives a more expansive pack dynamic.

The usual "Fated Mate" is common as wells as the broken bond that results in the death of the Omega. But the explanation of the Alpha's Venom is named and new. I liked that take on the bonding. As well as the venom that can kill another Alpha. Those are new. I don't think I have read anything like that before.

What I haven't read in other shifter books is that after a death challenge from another pack alpha, that the winner gets control over the losers property and pack. Although the fight(s) was shorter than expected, to see that the pack was growing and the decisions that were made was refreshing while at the same time setting up for future books.

Omegas being special with special gifts isn't new, but the gifts she gave them worked well for the story. Them being treated as second class or bartering chips is also not new but it worked out well for this story. To understand the "softer" alpha sides in this book, you have to realize that these four Alphas have created their own family when no one wanted them. so of course when they see things that hit them in the feels, they re going to show it.

I look forward to the next books. This was a great start to a Insta-love series featuring Bikers and MPreg. You can't really go wrong with those two things.

The Reluctant Alpha (audiobook)
MMy Thoughts and Confessions:

I am thrilled to bits with this new series, by Susi Hawke. I am such a huge fan of hers anyway, but this series is definitely what I have been needing.

The West Coast Wolves are a bunch of Alphas who have left or been ostracized from their packs. So, even though it goes against everything known in the shifter world, this group of alphas have become a pack on their own and are closer than most families.

When one of the members, Matthias, gets a distress call from home he must decide to stay with his found family of brothers, or return to his birth pack and save a dying omega and the pack from destruction. Matt suffered so much abuse from his Alpha father growing up, while the rest of the pack stood by and did nothing. He is not so sure he wants to help these same people now, even though his father is no longer around, and years have passed. However, he is not sure he can let an innocent omega die for the sins of his diabolical uncle either. Matt and his West Coast Wolf Pack brothers have always taken pride in helping others in need. He can’t stop now…or can he?

I love Hawke’s storytelling because the characters are people you want to know and have in your life. The worlds she creates are places you want to visit and live in. I always find myself so immersed in these stories MY real-life must pause, so I don’t miss a single scene, one-liner, or character introduction.

I was also ecstatic to find Nick J. Russo was the narrator for this book. When I discovered Russo about a year and a half ago, he quickly became one of my top five favorite narrators. Whenever an audiobook crosses my desk and Russo’s name is attached to said audiobook, I know the story will move me. With, “The Reluctant Alpha,” Nick did a stupendous job bringing the book to life.

I can hardly wait for more of the series to come to audio. I hope it will be soon. I highly recommend this to anyone searching for a good shifter series with lots of heart, humor, and a sense of family and belonging.

Awesome Story & Narration🎧 Fascinating & Gripping!

The Reluctant Alpha
West Coast Wolves, Book 1
By: Susi Hawke
Narrated by: Nick J. Russo

This book is awesome and the perfect start to a new series. The story captured my attention right from the start and held it all the way to the end. Susi Hawke is a gifted author with a brilliant mind, the world and characters she creates are fascinating and imaginative. I enjoy her writing style, her descriptive details bring you in to her story and places you along side the characters giving your a bird’s eye view of what they are seeing, thinking and feeling. She does a great job explaining the world dynamics and the hierarchy of the pack. Which is awesome for those new to the genre. I adored the main characters in this book. Matthias “Matt” Longclaw is an Alpha living on the road with other Alphas. These Alphas bonded and formed a pack of their own called the West Coast Wolves, they are bikers and nomads. Each has their own reason why do not have their own pack, Matt’s reason was his no good father. When Matt gets an urgent call from a friend he grew up with he made the decision to return to Lucerne Valley to answer his call for help, to save an Omegas life. In order to save this Omega he must claim him as a mate. I loved how everything plays out in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, some angst, action, twists, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt and emotional moments and some hot romance. Susi Hawke built the foundation to her new series in this book and I am looking forward to what comes next for the other Alphas and to hear more about Matt and Elisha. Thank you for this awesome story!

I listened to the Audible edition, Nick J. Russo a fabulously talented narrator and voice artist. He brings the characters to life, gives each their own distinct voice which makes it easy to follow along and tell who is who. His portrayal of the characters is spot on, he takes each role and make it his own. He sets the perfect tone for the story, captures all of the characters emotions and projects them into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen🎧

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book and thought that it was a good start to the series. I’ve read this book a couple of times since I first purchased it back in 2020 but never gotten a chance at posting a review, so here goes. I’ve been a fan of Susi Hawke’s for a few year now and have enjoyed every book that I’ve read of hers. I did find that the book dragged a bit, and was more about world building than about the main characters as a couple, a lot of their interactions were off page. I also found that things went a bit too smoothly where their relationship was concerned but I suppose after being forced to mate with the previous alpha, Elisha could tell that Matty is a honest, kind, loving and protective person.

Elisha was initially a bit wary of Matt due to his past, even though he could tell that Matt was his true mate but after all the ab*se he suffered it’s totally understandable. Elisha was on deaths door, after his own father Monty killed Elisha’s mate Horace (Elisha was stolen and forced to mate with Horace) without lining up another alpha to save Elisha’s life, took all the men and boys of working age with him back to Newberry Springs knowing Elisha will follow Horace in death. Luckily the pack Beta Jared, called up his old friend Matt and told him about the situation. Matt was initially not interested but after hearing the full story from Jared, he came back to Lucerne Valley to not only save Elisha and his pup but the pack as well.

Even though he didn’t have very good memories of growing up there. Matt also has to challenge Monty for rights to the pack. Matt is extremely glad that he did since Elisha is his true mate. I enjoyed meeting Matt’s friends and other West Coast Wolves, Tucker, Devon, Lucian and Nick and I’m looking forward to reading their stories as the series continues. They’re totally friend and family goals. Elisha’s little brothers Saul and Noah were total sweethearts. I loved seeing them find a loving and supportive family with Elisha, Matt and the rest of the WCW’s as uncles. It was such a touching moment when Matt claimed them as his family by clawing over their father’s sire mark. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

Can love come from pain? (an audio review)

Elisha has known joy and pain. His papa was good to him and his younger brothers. When papa passed, though, his life changed. And when he’s kidnapped and used as a pawn in a political game, his father doesn’t come to his rescue. Instead he tries to see what he can make out of the situation. We don’t know all this when the book opens, though. The first scene is gut-churning as we realize Elisha is in big trouble. And it appears there’s no one to save him.

Matthias left home at eighteen, tired of being abused. As an alpha son, he was due to inherit, but he decided that wasn’t the path he wanted to take. He joined with other alphas in a motorcycle group that travel up and down the California highways. He loves his life – the lack of responsibility brings freedom and relief. He no longer has to think about his horrific past.

Except life doesn’t work that way, does it? He’s summoned home to save a life and then save a pack. As an alpha wolf shifter, he has a strong desire for pack. He’s just not sure he’s ready to go back to the people who turned a blind eye to the horrors he’d endured.

But an omega needs him to save his life and Matt isn’t so callous as to let the young man die. What he doesn’t expect is to find a brave young man who is determined to protect the pup growing inside him. He doesn’t expect to find his fated mate.

Now, Susi Hawke books tend to be on the shorter side and I like that about them – consumable in one sitting. This book was a bit longer and it continued even after the love story was pretty much wrapped up. There was a lot about politics and rebuilding a community – all of which was interesting, to be sure. Also, she’s spent a lot of time setting up future books and this one even ends with a cliffhanger for another character. So, needless to say, I’ll be snapping the next one up to find out what happens.

Nick J. Russo is narrating this series and since he’s talented and fun to listen to, I enjoyed the book. I can’t wait to see where the overall arc of these five West Coast alpha wolves goes.

This was a surprisingly sweet story. After reading The Assassin’s Claws series, I knew to expect some humor along with action. This story has all that, plus some really tender moments, with a few bordering on fluffy content, but just missing it by a smidge.

At the beginning of the book, we are introduced to a dying Elisha, an omega who’s Alpha mate has been killed, and has been left to meet a similar fate. We also meet Matthias, an Alpha who chose to leave his pack, when given the chance, because of his father’s abuse. He has since joined up with other homeless, unwanted, or second-born Alphas, and formed the West Coast Wolves motorcycle club. They have a history of helping when they can, so when Matt gets a call from an old friend, his sense of right and wrong won’t allow him to say no. Things in his hometown have drastically changed since he left, but nothing could’ve surprised him more than the sight he was met with when he got there. He was wrought with anger on the behalf of the pack. Once he crossed paths with the dying Omega, his anger only increased. Fate stepped in, and had one last surprise for Matt, upon his return home. The dying Omega—Elisha...is his Fated Mate. This kicks off a chain of events that set up the series.

I enjoyed Matt and Elisha’s interactions and growing relationship. I adored Matt’s nickname ‘Little Wolf’ for Elisha. It was stinkin’ cute! Seeing how they were fated mates, their instalove was absolutely understandable. Seeing Matt’s paternal sidekick in with Elisha’s little brothers was heartwarming. I hope we get to see more of the young Omega wolves later on.

This story was well written and easy to get lost in. The characters draw you in and make you like them without even trying hard. I cannot wait to dive into the next book. This book is already available in audiobook format. It’s brought to life by Nick J. Russo, who is super talented, and one of my favorite narrators. So, whether you read the book, listen to the audiobook, or both, I highly recommend this book.
