Gull's Landing #3

The Country Club

Rate this book
No membership fees. No tee times. And no HOA. Welcome to the Country Club, a countryside cottage for friends...

Meryl Preston is floating in the wake of her parents’ deaths. Left with little more than a ramshackle country house they rented out to vagrants, she has two choices: let her inheritance go into foreclosure or try to turn the boarding house into something with charm and style. But time is running out, and she needs fast cash to make a go of flipping the storied property…

Delia Astor had everything. Perfect husband. Perfect house. Perfect life. Until the morning she finds divorce paperwork waiting next to her espresso machine. Now Delia needs a place to stay while she figures out how she lost it all.

Lucy Spaur is sailing comfortably into her golden years… until her daughter wants to pull the plug on her independence. Nervous that Lucy isn’t capable of living alone any longer, Marcia tells her mother she has two choices: move into an assisted living home or find a roommate. Stubborn to the core, Lucy won’t settle for either. That’s when she discovers a quaint countryside room for rent.

The Country Club is a standalone women's fiction featuring three new friends, each in a different phase of life and each determined to make the most of it. With a dash of romance and hint of mystery, this story follows Meryl, Delia, and Lucy as they bring to life an old rental and turn it into something more than a place to a live, but also a place where they are proud to gather.

Readers can enjoy novels in the Gull's Landing series in any order.

We're back in Gull's landing with another wonderful story of people who become friends when they meet at a time of change in their lives. Meryl's dealing with the sudden death of her parents, Delia finds herself unexpectedly going through a divorce, and Lucy has to face the fact that she should no longer live alone. Circumstances bring these three women together and they become friends and move into the huge house Meryl has inherited, but which has been neglected for years.

Elizabeth Bromke brings us yet another story of strangers who are brought together by difficult circumstances who become more than friends--they become a family. We watch Meryl and Delia work together to make the neglected home liveable, while Lucy tries to find an option to moving into a care facility. You'll want to cry with these characters over their troubles and cheer with them on their successes. I liked how they worked together to turn a neglected house into a home. As a cat lover I totally understood how Lucy felt about having to leave her cat behind. I would've been heartbroken too. There is a bit of a mystery woven through the story which kept my interest.

This is part of the Gull's Landing series, but each book is a standalone. You don't have to read the others to enjoy this one.

I received a complimentary copy to review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.

Strangers Become Family
This is a warm story of strangers becoming family in the nicest way. I could certainly put myself into the shoes of any of the female characters. The story was well written and a bit haunting. Even though the epilogue tied up some loose ends nicely, it wasn't quite enough. The ending seemed rushed and incomplete. I would have enjoyed more pages of ending to make that epilogue totally satisfying. This book is the third in a series. Each book is complete to itself. I don't believe that they share any characters, just the same coastal town. I received this ARC book for free from the author and this is my honest review.

Three women, each facing a dramatic turning point in their lives, are forced to change their way of living. The financial effect to Meryl after the sudden deaths of her parents, Delia’s unexpected divorce and Lucy’s realisation that she should no longer live alone, all contrive in their decision to share Meryl's house. Each of the new friends will be available to offer support and help when needed.

Meryl’s initial plan was to spend the summer renovating her parent's old house to sell in the autumn. However the property has secrets concealed in a long history, secrets that draw the three women closer in their friendship. The house, renamed The Country Club, is saved from decades of abandonment and neglect, slowly becoming a much loved home.

A inspiring tale of hope and friendship.

With thanks to the author and BookFunnel who generously supplied this ARC, this review is my honest opinion and completely unbiased.

Well once again Bromke has written endearing, beautifully flawed characters that you can't help but become invested in from the start. As per all of her books I've read, I was instantly drawn into the story. It doesn't matter the age, or circumstance of her characters, whether their lifestyle, hobbies or even their story, itself, is something I can relate to, I'm instantly invested until the end. She gives you a whisper of mystery throughout this book. Just enough to fly through the words in an attempt to get to the heart of said mystery. The epilogue of this book is wonderful, and gives the perfect ending to the story of strangers turned family.

What a wonderful story of three women, Meryl, Delia and Lucy who each have their own issues and problems in life. There are happy times and sad times they each experience through their lives. A common thread to most of us is having friendships. Can three women finally come together, living under one roof in the house Meryl inherited from her parents and forge their dreams to become reality. They now had a "club" where they would be forever friends and never leave each other, no matter what. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. I highly recommend this book.

I received an ARC of this book from the author, Elizabeth Bromke, via Bookfunnel and this is my voluntary and honest review. I enjoyed this book about three women: Mery, Delia, and Lucy. They were strangers who became friends when they decided to live together in a mansion that Meryl's parents had put in her name before they were killed in an auto accident. It is a beautiful story of overcoming wrongs of the past and making new friends. I recommend this book.

I received an ARC to review: a true 'chic lit' story, where the threads of 3 vastly different women become woven together by their deep need for the mysterious, stigmatized house on the outskirts of town. A fun, honest read, with some quirky characters who cause us to reflect on our own relationships as we witness theirs. Some drama, romance, gossip, mystery and intrigue all add their unique flavour to the tale.

lovely Group of quirky characters

This was a delightful book of a woman trying to find her footing after a tragedy, and being drawn to the old family home instead of selling it. The cast of characters is varied and yet fits together, the house seems to have a mysterious past, and a dark and brooding school for troubled girls rounds it out. I loved the interactions between them as they build a family with each other, and it ends with a lovely sense of hope and continuation. 4 1/2 stars because the ending felt rushed and could have used more depth. It’s OK to have a longer book if the length is worthwhile, and more scenes instead of summary at the end would be good. I will read more of Elizabeth Bromke’s books! Recommended.

This was the first book I've read by the author, and I found it an enjoyable story with relatable characters. An inherited run-down home drew together three women from different paths and histories, and became the glue to help them maneuver the next stages of their lives. For me, personally, the jumping from character to character (chapter by chapter) seemed a tad disjointed, but I suppose the technique enabled development of each of the women. Regardless of that, I enjoyed my time at "the country club."

Over the last couple of weeks, I've started at least a half dozen books and would stop reading 30 or 40 percent through. They just weren't what I was looking for. Then I started this one.
It's a pretty easy read, able to complete in just a few hours. Well written with believable characters and a little mystery added to complete a satisfying afternoon with a really good book.

Such an interesting story focused on broken relationships and budding relationships. The pace was deliberate with layers of old secrets revealed while exploring the difference between deceptive appearances and the true worth of people and places.

Although it was my pleasure to receive this free book from the author, it was completely my choice to share my honest review.

Disappointed

I really liked the story as well as the characters, but then it ended abruptly with an epilogue. What was up with that? It was like the author decided to dump the project to write another . I probably will not read any more of her books.

This was a short read - actually I think the epilogue was longer than the book. I wish there had been more about fixing up the house and less "mystery" which kind of appeared near the end of the book out of nowhere. I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it :-(

The mystery house of friendships

Four siblings all very different, but came together when it counted! The oldest sister and youngest sister story line was a surprise twist in the story!

Dreams can come true

Dreams, tragedy, heartache and love are all covered in the story. And don't forget the many secrets that were revealed. I did not want to put it down.
